It's not just because the late Ted Lucas shared a hometown with Third Man Records co-founder and co-owner Ben Blackwell that the Detroit native became obsessed with reviving Lucas' music. But that surely sweetened the pot. The one and only solo LP by Lucas, self-titled and from 1975, is re-released on vinyl and with digital extra tracks on February 21. We learned more about the artist and these songs from Blackwell inside Third Man's Nashville HQ.

Welcome to this special edition of the TheoDisc podcast which was recorded live at the WTC residential in September 2024. Our Residential is a time when students from all of our Hubs around the UK and Northern Ireland gather together for a week of worship and learning, and we thought it would be fun to record an episode of TheoDisc with our student body as a live audience.  Our guest was Ben Blackwell who is our current Vice Principal. On the morning of the day we recorded the interview, we announced publicly that Ben would be taking over as Principal for WTC in January and Lucy Peppiatt, our current Principal would assume the role of President of the college. This conversation allowed us to explore Ben's journey in academic theology, his vision for WTC's future, and some of his own theological commitments including on the issue of justification. Sheer Mag - "All Lined Up," a 2023 single on Third Man Records Philadelphia-based punks Sheer Mag have been signed to Third Man Records, who will not only be reissuing their older albums, but their forthcoming full-length as well (no hard details yet, but stay tuned for a release date).  “Having been aware of Sheer Mag since their earliest 7-inch singles and keeping up with their self-released, independent, DIY take-no-prisoners ethos, I never envisioned a world where they would ever sign to a record label,” said Third Man's Ben Blackwell in a press statement. “So imagine how ecstatic we were at Third Man when the band reached out to us directly and asked if we'd be interested in partnering with them. Still doesn't seem real. We are beyond honored, humbled really, to receive their handshake and their trust. This is gonna be fun as shit.” Today's Song of the Day is a tease at what's to come. The band explain the track was inspired by "late nights at the bar playing pool. Last call has long come and gone, the gate is down, the ashtrays are out and your friend behind the bar is giving it all away. Despite the revelry, there's a looming sense of dread — a fear that no matter how far ahead you get, all it takes is one bad shot to lose the game.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With The White Stripes breakthrough masterpiece celebrating its 20th anniversary, and in advance of the corresponding commemorative vault release, the Third Men Podcast is finally tackling the only Stripes record remaining in its "album analysis & review" series -- and you'd better believe we're not cutting any corners in the process. Last episode we discussed the inception, recording, design and historical context of the release of this mammoth LP, delving into detail on how the sessions came about. We also poured over our own interviews through the years to paint an accurate portrait of the inception of one of our favorite records of all time - from Ben Blackwell to Pat Pantano to Bruce Brand and everyone in-between. In part 2 of this series we'll begin the track-by-track discussion, from the album's iconic lead-off cut right on through to the similarly iconic blues rocker that continues to wow audiences in a live setting to this day. So grab some peanuts and park your trunk - our love for this album is 10-fold, girl. We'll let you hear it if you want to before you go. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Watt Matters: The FORESIGHT energy transition podcast

The wind industry should be experiencing a golden age. As one of the world's cheapest forms of new generation, with a renewed global focus on energy security, and the need to decarbonise, wind energy is often the go-to technology of choice. But orders for new machinery were down in 2022, and western original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have issued warnings for a difficult 2023. A similar story is seen along the whole supply chain. Many fingers point to permitting, particularly in Europe, as the main bottleneck for the deployment of new wind capacity. But there are other issues the sector is facing that it must also overcome. In this week's Watt Matters, Ben Blackwell, CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), and Morten Dyrholm, Vice President and Global Head of Marketing and Public Affairs at Danish OEM Vestas Wind and chair of GWEC, discuss with the team why the wind manufacturing sector is struggling, what the solutions could be and why there is still cause for optimism. Ben Blackwell is back! With the calendar year 2022 freshly in the rear view mirror, we here at the Third Men Podcast are once again on a mission to look back at the music, art and output from Third Man Records over what turned out to be a joyful and creatively robust 12 months. Not one, but TWO Jack White solo records were released, heralding a massive worldwide tour from the Third Man himself for the first time in several years. Not only that, but a parade of varied vault releases, legendary collaborations and unforgettable stunts followed in what is sure to go down in TMR history as a watershed moment of copious and successful output. In this special retrospective, 6-time-returning guest Ben Blackwell (co-founder and co-owner of Third Man Records) joins us to shed light on these events…and teases a glimpse of what's in store for 2023. Does Tropical Gothclub signal a Dead Weather reunion? Can The Paranoyds pierce the zeitgeist in the same way TMR finds such as Margo Price have done so in the past? Can James find it in him to successfully pronounce each member of the Bobby Weir band's names correctly? The answers to these questions and much more await you in this special 2022 retrospective, and we'd like to extend a huge thanks to Mr. Blackwell for not only appearing once more on the show but for all the wonderful art he helped bring into the world this year. Cheers to Third Man, and cheers to 2023 — Happy New Year, everybody! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Too many people have been hurt by a church in their past, because church has become something that it was never meant to be: an event or building that we attend. So, WellHouse has returned to a New Testament expression of our faith by meeting in homes and dedicating ourselves to: the teaching of the scriptures, the fellowship of the believers, the breaking of bread together, and praying together for one another. We are focused on being a genuine expression of Christian hospitality and service to our community and the people of our community. At WellHouse we want to be a place where people can Be Real, Be Relational, and Be Restored. As our leadership was dreaming up this vision, we looked at Scripture and saw that the earliest expressions of the church met in homes and it was rare that all of the believers were together. Today, most churches have found themselves spending a large portion of their budget on buildings that they rarely use. Not WellHouse. We want to keep our overhead low so we can spend our money on the things that matter, being the hands and feet of Jesus. So, we meet in the homes of our members for the majority of our meetings. Too many people have been hurt by a church in their past, because church has become something that it was never meant to be: an event or building that we attend. At WellHouse, we believe that the people of God are the church and that the love of God should be experienced through the people of God. Once per month, we all come together at a rented facility to devote our selves together as the whole church for the purpose of worshipping God together.

With all of this talk about the kingdom of God and heaven, people can't help but wonder about the final culmination of the kingdom of God? What will the afterlife and the ultimate realization of the kingdom of God look like? Well, Dr. Ben Blackwell is back with Pastor Cullen to help us answer this question. Happy Listening! Too many people have been hurt by a church in their past, because church has become something that it was never meant to be: an event or building that we attend. At WellHouse, we believe that the people of God are the church and that the love of God should be experienced through the people of God. Once per month, we all come together at a rented facility to devote our selves together as the whole church for the purpose of worshipping God together.

Ben Blackwell is back! As the calendar year 2020 draws to a close, we here at the Third Men Podcast are once again on a quest to look back at the music, art and output from Third Man Records over what turned out to be a challenging but prolific 12 months. True, this year was a heap of scalding trash, but TMR was a beacon of joy and music in an otherwise dismal affair - and damn it, we're going to celebrate that! To help us out, TMR co-founder, co-owner and resident psychedelic warlock Ben Blackwell joins us to elaborate on the big events going on in the world of Third Man - and BOY are there some highlights this year! From releases with legendary artists like Prince, Johnny Cash and Paul McCartney (!!!) to the amazing series of Vault packages released, to a new canonical mass-market White Stripes album (the group's first-ever Greatest Hits collection), Jack, the Bens and co. have been up to their usual masterful tricks despite everything else that this year threw at them. In this episode you'll hear what album Ben was most excited about, which song Jack White cocked an eyebrow at on the Greatest Hits, and which episode of the Third Men Podcast Ben didn't think we got all-the-way wrong! All that and much more await you in this special 2020 retrospective, and we'd like to extend a huge thanks to Mr. Blackwell for not only appearing once more on the show (his third time!) but for all the wonderful art he helped bring into the world this year. Cheers to Third Man, and cheers to 2021 -- Happy New Year, everybody! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Third Man Books has slowly but surely made a name for itself within the broader pantheon of TMR output these past few years, but the most ambitious effort for the imprint to date has undoubtedly been Ben Blackwell's THE BLUE SERIES: THE STORY BEHIND THE COLOR. Chronicling ten years of releases in Third Man's fabled Blue Series, this epic tome of information offers the story of how these records came to be from the people who made them happen. Going through each release in meticulous detail, TMR co-founder, co-owner and famed inventor of disco Ben Blackwell contributes interviews with the musicians involved, an extensive conversation with Jack White, and detail down to the nitty gritty on the most imaginative series of singles in modern music history. This week we review the book, discuss some of our favorites from the Blue Series, and take you the listener on a trip between the pages of one of our absolute favorite TMR releases to date. Living in the shadows of New Orleans, one of the great tourist destinations of the country, if not the world, Baton Rouge isn't typically thought of as a hot spot for the leisure traveler. But that has started to change in recent years, as the city and industry associations have begun marketing the Baton Rouge more aggressively as a place not to only to come do business at the state capitol or watch LSU football, but to come play. Paul Arrigo is the longtime President of Visit Baton Rouge, the city's convention and visitor's bureau. Visit Baton Rouge is funded by the city's 6% hotel motel tax. The organization gets 4 cents of that. The other 2 cents goes to the Raising Cane's River Center. With that money, Visit Baton Rouge promotes and markets Baton Rouge as a destination for both the leisure and business traveler and convention groups. Ben Blackwell is General Manager of the Courtyard Marriott, one of the newest hotels located right in the heart of downtown. When the Courtyard opened in September 2018, it brought the number of downtown hotel rooms to more than 1,000, which was a key goal of downtown and tourism industry leaders alike. Ben served in management roles in several other local hotels before moving over to the Courtyard Marriott. He also serves as President of the premier industry association in his field, the Baton Rouge Lodging Association. Photos over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard by Karry Hosford. While music propelled him forward, Ben was also keen to keep one eye on the past in his role as archivist for The White Stripes, preserving performances and historical documentation for the band that had changed so much of the face of popular music. Ben's solo LP I Remember When All This Was Trees, released on his very own Cass Records, stands tall on its own - pushing boundaries and digging deep for unforgettable Detroit-inspired grooves. We're beyond thrilled to have Ben on the show and hope you all enjoy this interview as much as we did! We know -- we can't believe it, either! The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with a Rock'n'Roll legend, the one and only Mick Collins! Jack White fans know Mick for many things, but first and foremost as a founding member of one of the most influential rock bands to ever tear up a stage, The Gories. Every major movement stands on the shoulders of the giants who came before, and the Detroit rock revival that catapulted Jack White to stardom was a culmination of decades of visionary artistry from acts like The Stooges, MC5 and the high energy, blues/punk-infused sound that Mick Collins, Dan Kroha and Peggy O'Neill created. It's a tough act to follow, but follow it Mick did with the foundation of a new art project that would evolve into White Stripes contemporaries The Dirtbombs. With such members as TMR co-founder Ben Blackwell, Raconteur Patrick Keeler and former White Stripes producer Jim Diamond, this new band's connections to the Third Man Records universe run deep, and the group stands amongst the most prominent and successful acts to emerge from the era. Mick's other groups are no slouch either, from The Voltaire Brothers to The Screws to Blacktop and beyond, he continues to weave one of richest tapestries in modern music. And then he called-in to our show! We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Mick for joining us – it was a pleasure interviewing him and one of the most spontaneous, lively and fun interviews we've ever had the pleasure of conducting! If for nothing else, stay for the bowling tips! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Enter: The Dirtbombs - a revolving cast of quintessential voices in the rock revival and home base for such Third Man staples as Ben Blackwell, Jim Diamond, Patrick Keeler, E Wolf and many, many more.
