Welcome to the most excellent future, Void! We are here in our garage playing our guitars (plucking strings) to make the most bodacious music (cacophonous garbage). This week we watched the documentary film about public high school in San Dimas in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." Erin and Brennan discuss REAL history: the realities of plate armor, an extensive discussion on medieval torture, and Joan d'Arc not being Noah's wife (though she may have believed it). We talked about how this movie is the American version of Dr. Who, how charisma can really take you places, and why spelling matters (Wyld Stallyns is more of a Monty Python sketch than a rock band). Overall, we learned to be excellent to one another and to party on, dude! This podcast is in no way an actual review of the city of San Dimas, California or its educational system.

Not exactly an easy sell, right? But what started as a quirky stand-up routine from college pals Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon turned into a surprise hit. The film didn't just make money—it inspired a sequel, an animated series, a comic book, and even its own breakfast cereal! After a challenging production—complete with budget issues, a rewritten ending, and hundreds of auditions—Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure finally hit theaters. While initial reviews were most heinous, it steadily won over audiences, and the rest is, well, history. So, jump into the time-traveling phone booth, practice your air guitar skills, and don't forget to wind your watch as Nicholas Pepin, Chad Sheppard, Laramy Wells, and I discuss Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure from 1989 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Many of the historical figures that Bill and Ted brought back died in tragic ways. Several, including Socrates, Joan of Arc, Billy the Kid, and Abraham Lincoln, were either executed or assassinated. Sigmund Freud died by assisted suicide. Some people believe Napoleon Bonaparte's death under house arrest was the result of arsenic poisoning. Historically, Genghis Khan and Ludwig van Beethoven died of natural causes. Bill's "philosophy" to Socrates, "All we are is dust in the wind, dude," is a line from "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. Socrates' response is, "Like sands of the hourglass, such are the days of our lives." For example, one excellent movie that I once dismissed as "just a chick flick" is now one of my all time favorites.There are huge action stars like Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, and Mel Gibson represented here - but so are some future action leads, like Keanu Reeves & Christian Slater at an earlier stage of their careers.Vampires! On today's episode, we're heading over to the Battle of the Bands to try and save the world, but before that, we have to make a little pit stop over to both Heaven and Hell, while we revisit the absolutely excellent buddy comedy classic, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991). This movie was directed by Pete Hewitt and co-written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.This movie stars Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix), Alex Winter (Death Wish 3, Grand Piano), William Sadler (The Shawshank Redemption, Die Hard 2), Joss Ackland (Watership Down, Lethal Weapon 2), Pam Grier (Jawbreaker, Bones), and George Carlin (Carwash, Dogma).This movie is such a departure from the first film (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure), but I think it's a great sequel in its own right, and it has a certain visual style and edge to it, that really makes it set apart from movies in a similar vein. I recommend checking it out to see how warped this story gets and seeing these actors having such a fun time making the film.
