Born and raised in Pennsylvania, the 97-year-old Pittsburgh-based artist and sculptor Thaddeus Mosley has a deep and enduring obsession with wood. In his late 20s, he began to use the material for art, carving sculptures in his basement studio, and with his sculpture-making now spanning 70 years, his enduring dedication to his craft is practically unparalleled. Represented by Karma gallery since 2019, Mosley has only now, in the past decade or so, begun to receive the international recognition and attention he has long deserved. In his hands, wood sings; he shapes and carves trees into striking abstract forms that often appear as if they're levitating while honoring and preserving their organic, natural character. As with the work of his two main influences, Constantin Brâncuși and Isamu Noguchi, Mosley, too, strives to make sculptures that, in his words, beyond today, “will be interesting in a hundred tomorrows.”On the episode, he talks about the language that poetry, music, and sculpture all share; his early years as a sports writer for a local newspaper; and his life-transforming relationship with the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Thaddeus Mosley[4:13] Sam Gilliam[17:24] Carnegie Museum[21:08] Carnegie International[21:08] Leon Arkus[21:08] “Thaddeus Mosley: Forest”[21:08] “Inheritance”[24:20] Isamu Noguchi[27:53] Constantin Brâncuși[28:28] University of Pittsburgh[28:28] Martha Graham[46:15] Floyd Bennett Field[46:23] Ebony magazine[46:23] Sepia magazine[46:23] Jet magazine[46:23] Pittsburgh Courier[54:34] John Coltrane[51:37] Li Bo[51:37] Dylan Thomas[56:21] Bernard Leach[57:45] Langston Hughes[57:45] Countee Cullen[57:45] Harriet Tubman[57:45] Fannie Lou Hamer[57:45] “The Long-Legged Bait”[57:45] “Air Step - for Fayard and Harold Nicholas”[57:45] The Nicholas Brothers

As a DJ, I play tracks and music from others. It's what we DJ's do. We play tracks we haven't created ourselves for people to dance to and appreciate. In essence, we are the ambassadors for the artists and producers of said tracks. We're the vectors that get their music viral, that get their music heard and distributed. Without us, without the parties, this wouldn't happen. I mixed a special set this month, a Valentine's Day set from the confines of my pandemic-free haven, my bedside. I also went on YouTube and found some classic dance movies to sync the beats up with for my chasing synchronicity impetus that has driven me for so long. I wish I had the bandwidth to choreograph, but one lifetime is just too darned short to do everything we love with the dedication they deserve. So, I repurposed the look and feel of Fred Astair, Eleanor Powell, Ginger Rogers, Anne Miller, Mitzi Gainer, The Nicholas Brothers and other greats of their time, destined to be forgotten by the next generations, and mixed them in with modern-day electronica, with house music, deep house music, and dance. I'm not going to make any money for doing so, since YouTube frowns on that sort of thing, and perhaps Spotify might ding me for spinning other artists' tracks I didn't produce myself. However, for the sake of the Art, I must at least try. To see the video, visit YouTube. To listen to the mix without commentary, music only, visit SoundCloud. As a boy, I would watch PBS and their ballets. I would turn the music down and replace their music (though enjoyable in its own right) with a cassette tape containing my favorite dance music that I recorded from the radio. Basically, it's all I'm doing now, just with better equipment. Here's to the spirit of the dance, the deep appreciation of existential synchronicity, and the heart of every DJ in the world. Directed by Andrew Stone and starring an array of top talent including, Lena Horne, Bill Robinson, Cab Callaway, Katherine Dunham, Fats Waller, The Nicholas Brothers, Ada Brown, Dooley Wilson, and so many more, it’s an incredible film from a music and dance perspective and a troubling film from the perspective of accurate portrayals of the characters in the film, not to mention almost zero character development. There’s a lot to cover in this film and we do our best.

The Nicholas Brothers
Ali Smith discusses her Brexit-era novel, Autumn, with Samira Ahmed. It's the first of a quartet which very much reflects the issues of today.Osmo Vänskä is about to conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing all the symphonies of Sibelius. He speaks about the composer and Sibelius' place in Finnish national identity. In 1943 two African American brothers from Philadelphia performed a dance routine in the film Stormy Weather, which Fred Astaire would come to refer to as the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen. For Fayard and Harold Nicholas - otherwise known as The Nicholas Brothers - entering the Hollywood arena this was no small feat in the 1940's America, a time when racial prejudice was commonplace. Choreographer Stuart Thomas reflects on the achievement of the brothers who were regulars at Harlem's Cotton Club - working with the orchestras of Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington - and one of whom taught Michael Jackson to dance. There are old saws that depicting figures is prohibited in Islam and that the religion, apart from devotion to the one God, has no truck with the supernatural. Francesca Leoni, curator of a new exhibition at the the Ashmolean Museum, and Professor Tariq Ramadan, discuss with Samira Ahmed how things are a good deal more complicated than that. And, on the day a spacecraft lands on Mars to send messages back about the planaet, we hear part of a poem that reverses that process.
In honor of National Tap Dance Day (May 25), Movie Addict Headquarters revisits a lively discussion with avid dance fan Fausta Rodriguez, co-host Jazz Shaw, producer Nikki Starr -- and host Betty Jo Tucker, a former happy tapper. This encore presentation is dedicated to Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, the great tap dancer whose birthday on May 25 is celebrated every year as NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY, having been signed into law by President George W. Bush back in 1989 to celebrate tap dancing as an American art form. This episode features a conversation about favorite dancing in the movies, so tap dancing is included, of course. But you will also hear opinions about other forms of dance such as tango, ballroom and ballet. Which dancers will be named the best by the show’s diverse panel? Among the contenders are: Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Gregory Hines, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire, the Nicholas Brothers, Ginger Rogers, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, Leslie Caron, Ruby Keeler, Vera Ellen, Christopher Walken. Some of the films under consideration during this episode include: Footloose, Assassination Tango, The Bandwagon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Singin’ in the Rain, Shall We Dance, Billy Elliott, West Side Story, Saturday Night Fever, Dirty Dancing, Take the Lead, Flashdance, Hairspray, Easter Parade and Tap.
EPISODE 204The Cotton Club, Harlem's most prominent nightclub during the Prohibiton era, delivered some of the greatest music legends of the Jazz Age -- Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Ethel Waters, the Nicolas Brothers. Some of the most iconic songs in the American songbook made their debut at the Cotton Club or were popularized in performances here. But the story of gangster Owney Madden's notorious supper club is hardly one to be celebrated. That the Cotton Club was owned by Prohibition's most ruthless mob boss was just the beginning. The club enshrined the segregationist policies of the day, placing black talent on the stage for the pleasure of white patrons alone. Even the club's flamboyant décor -- by Ziegfeld's scenic designer, no less -- made sure to remind people of these ugly admission practices. This is the tale of Harlem late night -- of hot jazz and illegal booze, of great music and very bad mobsters. Featuring some of the greatest tunes of the day by Ellington, Calloway, Waters, King Oliver and more. THIS PODCAST FEATURED MUSICAL SNIPPETS FROM THE FOLLOWING SONGS: Black and Tan Fantasy - Duke Ellington Drop Me Off In Harlem - Duke Ellington Speak Easy Blues - King Oliver Jazz Band Charleston - Paul Whiteman Mood Indigo - Duke Ellington Swing Session - Duke Ellington If You Were In My Place - Duke Ellington Minnie the Moocher - Cab Calloway I've Got The World On A String - Duke Ellington Stormy Weather - Ethel Waters On The Sunny Side of the Street - Duke Ellington NOTES ON THIS SHOW: -- A couple amusing flubs in this show 1) Duke Ellington's nickname is probably inspired by the Duke of Wellington, not (obviously) the Duke of Ellington, 2) the name of the movie with Lena Horne and the Nicholas Brothers is obviously named Stormy Weather, not Stormy Weathers (which must be the name of a drag queen somewhere) -- Jack Johnson's story is so much more complex and I wish I had more time to talk about him. For more information, check out the incredible documentary (and the book it's based on by Geoffrey C Ward) called Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. Support the show.
