(S5, EP 1) As we wrap up #AAPIMonth and begin #PrideMonth Longtime dancer, artist and model Kevin Stea kicks things off as my 1st guest for this Season 5's "Our Becoming: An Asian LGBTQ experience" on The Banh Mi Chronicles Podcast. This interview was recorded in mid March right after the Atlanta shooting. Kevin is of biracial, mixed Chinese American descent who danced for Madonna's worldwide hit tour, "The Blond Ambition" in 1990. He would go on to perform as an actor, model, and choreographed for many other icons, and still dancing today. We talked about the disconnect he felt in not being able to connect to his Chinese heritage, and his father, also of Chinese descent, who was largely absent during his childhood. We discussed about what it meant being queer during the volatile AIDS / HIV crisis during the 80s and early 90s which wreaked havoc on the LGBTQ commmunity. I got Kevin to talk about his experience working with some of the biggest icons as a dancer / choreographer, and being in a white-led entertainment industry that was not very welcoming to Asian Americans. Check out Kevin on his IG @kevinstea or his FB at Kevin Stea /// Bio: After only 18 months of training, Kevin was hired as associate choreographer to legendary choreographer Vincent Paterson for Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour. He quickly became dance captain and dancer for the World Tour, for which both the movie “Madonna: Truth or Dare” and the video for “Vogue” were made, and performed in Madonna's iconic performance on the 1990 MTV Music Video Awards. Soon after, he was working with Gloria Estefan, Prince, and Michael Jackson, among others, as associate choreographer/dancer, and won the Grand Prize on the television show “Star Search.” He modeled for major designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Tommy Hilfiger, Romeo Gigli and Exté, and worked with celebrity photographers David Lachapelle, Matthew Rolston, Peggy Sirota, Herb Ritts and Santo D'Orazio, at a time when Asians were not accepted in the industry. He has choreographed for other artists such as Britney Spears, Cher, David Bowie, Rihanna, Beyonce, Ricky Martin, among others. Kevin performed in movies such as Sister Act 2, as Daryl in Showgirls, as Swifty the Rake in Newsies and as Goldman Girl Yum Mee in The Birdcage, for which he won a SAG award. In 2016, he reunited with his fellow dancers from Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour for the critically-acclaimed documentary, "Strike A Pose." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/banhmichronicles/support

A few random thoughts:   1) So AoS is now Prime-era Legends of Tomorrow? That's fine with me. 2) I have only rewatched a couple episodes of AoS. I understood several of the references to past events that they dropped, but it was a stretch for me to remember them. I felt like I fell victim to the odd schedule of the last few years. 3) For me, it missed the mark. It was close, but not where I'd have liked to have seen it. The plot was predictable in several places and just felt a bit thin for the season opener of the finale season. Did it make me want to watch more? Yes. But it also felt a little "because of plot" a few times. Two examples of this include Coulson basically having no real care at all about being an LMD / being in the game after about 2 seconds, and also Yo-Yo's forced-resistance to the arms for again, about 2 seconds. Additionally, the fact they weren't targeting Roosevelt was called by the fact that their theory of who was the target was determined in again, about 2 seconds. I was pretty sure the bait and switch was going to happen. But like I said, it just felt a little thin for me, I'm not hating on it. There were some great qualities too. For example, with that last part the reason behind the switch was really cool, and the result of who they then have to save (it's a great throwback to the franchise). I really enjoyed most Simmons scenes, and think this version of her character is probably my favorite, and I think they've got the dynamic of the crew back to the one we loved in the earlier days.   E-MAIL   SHIELD 702 feedback!!!   Oh8four   Another great episode!  Loved all of the internal and teammate conflict, classic change-time vs allow-terrible-events-to-happen tropes, and character study.  And I'm still curious if they're going with loops or not.  The stinger definitely suggests that the Koenigs were only interested in robotics because their Grandpa met our team and Enoch, or maybe this would have just made them get even more into robotics in a separate timeline.  Regardless, there are a LOT of ripples being made.  Enoch could just sit and wait to meet back up with the team whenever they travel to next, but being the bartender at a future SHIELD speakeasy sounds like he has the opportunity to change a whole lot.  And I'm wondering if Malick would still have shot Koenig if Deke hadn't just insisted he was a killer.  It was surprisingly fascinating to delve into a character only briefly referenced in one past episode.    I'm curious what they're doing with May.  Surely Izel isn't inside of her, right?  I can't imagine they want to keep that storyline going, but it's the only thing that makes any sense right now.  Hopefully it's something better than that.    Very excited to see when we're heading to next!  I don't watch the "next time on" so I'll be in the dark until next week.  Hope you guys are safe and healthy wherever you're at.   Until next time true believers.  Excelsior!   OUTRO [49:48]   Haley, Lauren, Michelle and Stargate Pioneer love to hear back from you about how you would rate the episode we just discussed, your top 5 Marvel character lists, your science of Marvel questions, who would you pick in an all-female Avenger team, or which Marvel male you would like to see shirtless. "I recently had dinner with my birth parents together for the first time.  Sitting between them i realized how little time I had left to really know my now 78-year old father Andrew, having grown up with my caucasian mother and barely a word spoken about him until i tracked him down at 18.  26 years later we’ve still never spoken of his childhood in China, escaping war into Korea or his missionary immigration to the US.  Only a few years ago did i discover his seven marriages and splintered relationships with his eight brothers and sisters.  12 years ago my father and I made a plan to go together and he cancelled. We never spoke of it again, but now he is the only one of the family who remembers our home in China.   Thirty years ago my grandfather returned to Antung and was accused of being a spy because he received money from the government, so though the world has marched forward, our distant family still lives in the same house there and in much the same way. I’ve never spent more than one night with Andrew, so it is a unique opportunity to actually document these first moments of sharing, of traveling, of healing, of becoming related.  From staying in our ancestral home, learning my father’s technique in stretching noodles by hand from scratch and walking the Great Wall to studying the language and history, we’ll be discovering each other anew and making up for a childhood apart, while Andrew confronts the death of his mother and his youth spent supporting his siblings and the realities of war. We cannot move forward powerfully without understanding our past, which begins with our family.  We are the architects of our future and the biggest most fulfilling journeys can begin with the simplest of questions that we never seem to ask those who we’ve known all our lives, such as ‘Who are you?”.
