“Naked Girl is a story of the enduring power of love in a family of lunatics,” says Janna Brooke Wallack of her debut novel, a poignant piece of literary fiction. Though not autobiographical, it reads like a memoir. Wallack's enduring voice and fresh vision evoke the storytelling of masterful novelists like Ann Patchett, Kristin Hannah, and Zadie Smith. Naked Girl is a captivating and moving story that explores the dysfunction of a family, the struggles of 'fitting in' and the power of hope, humor, and imperfect love. Growing up motherless in 1980's Miami Beach, Sienna and her little brother Siddhartha get by with their charismatic and capricious father, Jackson Jones. When a small windfall relocates them to a condemned mansion on the water, the siblings are forbidden traditional schooling and left to live off the land. As Jackson uses their new home to create a communal cult, the siblings are forced to raise themselves in a carefree, chaotic oasis. Living amidst the vagrant seekers who take up residence in Jackson's utopia, Sienna and Siddhartha strive to protect their unconventional family.Janna Brooke Wallack writes with warmth, compassion and comic brilliance in Naked Girl, an enthralling debut novel brimming with the adventure, resilience, humor and heartbreak of growing up on the fringe of decency and longing for the unattainable comfort of home.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Guest Kyle Wallack is an artist-entrepreneur and the founder of Refined Graffiti, and you can learn more about his work at his digital gallery The KW Gallery. After graduating from Endicott College in Beverly, MA, he lived in New York City for several years where his career took off before recently relocating to the Tampa Bay, Florida area. Wallack, inspired by the likes of Banksy and Basquiat among others, has now done work for global phenoms Missy Elliot and Cardi B. His work has inspired millions across the world. Before becoming the esteemed American contemporary artist we know today, Wallack's journey was struck with hardship. In 2018, and at just 23 years old, Wallack was diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland, which required intensive surgery to remove the cancer from his face. After a successful surgery leaving him with more than 600 stitches, Wallack was walking to his apartment when he stumbled across an easel. Wallack of course picked it up, brought it back to his apartment, and the rest was history. Due to the nature of his surgery, Wallack was informed by his doctors that the blue light produced by phones and TVs were extremely harmful to his health. With no access to electronics for more than a year, and a newfound easel and paint, Wallack's journey as an artist began. Once Wallack picked up his newly found paintbrush and graffiti can, he never put them down. Painting became Wallack's outlet, and as a wide-eyed, young, 23 year-old trying to figure it all out, painting allowed him to produce positively during this time of adversity. Before Wallack had his surgery, he had never dabbled in art in an international way. Afterwards, everywhere he looked inspired him to create. Fast forward to the present day, Wallack has now dedicated his full-time career to being an artist. Through years of repetition, hard work, and grinding, Wallack is now represented by Quidley & Co, a well-respected, full-service gallery that has been representing artists for 30+ years. In this episode, we explore Wallack's impact that transcends the graffiti and traditional fine art communities, how he perseveres through all the hardships life throws at him, what he's creating now, and what he wants his legacy to be.

This week on On Story we'll hear from screenwriter Craig Borten on writing the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club which starred Matthew McConaughey. Borten is best known for his Oscar-nominated script for the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club. After hearing about Ron Woodroof, the original founder of the "Dallas Buyers Club" for the distribution of unapproved HIV medications, in the early 1990s, and interviewing Woodroof in 1992, Borten decided to write a screenplay about Woodroof and his buyer's club. He successfully sold the script in 1996, but shortly afterward the production company that had bought it dissolved. In 2001, he rewrote the script with Melisa Wallack and in 2009, Borten and Wallack were able to cast Matthew McConaughey and secure funding for the film's production. The film was released in 2013, more than two decades after Borten met Woodroof, and more than 15 years after selling his first version of the script. Dallas Buyers Club received numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Moderator Fred Strype spoke with Borten at the Austin Film Festival. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we've been asking each of our guests to describe their personal and professional pandemic experiences. Today's guest, Shari Wallack sums it up in the title of her new book, “From Hell To Challah”. As the founder of Buy The Sea, the largest and most decorated cruise and all-inclusive brokerage company in the industry, Shari experienced a mind-numbing professional crash in one day when cruise ships stopped sailings & her days became filled with arranging refunds for her clients rather than bookings. Her adult children came home to roost & with increasing anxiety, depression and despair Shari just wanted to run away from home. Unfortunately, the first stop on her journey was an involuntary commitment to a mental hospital. The rest of the story—3 months of travel & cooking in far-flung kitchens-- is far more uplifting.

This is a special episode for Alaska Tracy Podcast, Episode #50, and, with my dear friend and mentor Tandy Wallack! Tandy shares her amazing journey as a successful business owner and how spirituality plays a part in every aspect of her life including her business. I met Tandy almost 22 years ago and she offered me the gift of mentorship. I had no idea at the time of our meeting how instrumental Tandy would become in all areas of my life. The very first thing I learned from her was how to trust another and ask for help. Tandy guided me with Grace to take actions that would lead me to leave a career-making oodles of money to start my first business. I was single and had just purchased my very first home at the time. Trust, work, and love helped me take this leap of faith into the world of entrepreneurship 20+ years ago. Tandy has been instrumental in all of the businesses and in my life throughout the years. Her story is one of service to others, meditation, prayer, and allowing the Universe, God, whomever Power outside of yourself you choose to believe in to guide and direct all decisions. This trust often allows one to end up in an area you never would have even considered going with amazing miracles. May you be inspired, awed, and moved to take courageous actions by listening to Tandy's story. To connect with her you can visit Circumpolar Expeditions This episode sponsored by Virtual Women's Vision Mapping Workshop on August 12, 2020. In this episode, Cody has a conversation with professional stuntman Peter Wallack. Peter jokes that he just kinda fell into being a stuntman. After pursuing a number of different majors in college, he eventually decided to focus on technical theatre at the University of Alaska Anchorage. There, a mentor suggested that he become a stuntman. Not giving it too much thought, Peter went on with his life. It wasn’t until he was almost hit by a truck while biking to work did he really start to consider it. He realized that despite falling face-first into a curb, he innately knew how to fall in a way that protected his body. Today, working as a professional stuntman, Peter believes that you have to fully commit to an action. He says that you can’t do half a flip, you can only do a whole flip, or no flip at all. Peter grew up in a family of explorers who pushed the limits of what it means to adventure. His mom Tandy founded Circumpolar Expeditions, a business that curates and leads personalized adventures in the Arctic. Peter’s first tour was at 8 years old. He walked a group of Russian dancers all over downtown Anchorage and set them up with a Russian translator. A more recent adventure that Peter points to happened in 2016 and involved reuniting a family that had been separated since the Cold War. Thank you to Carrie Hambach and Whitney Branshaw for help with questions.

Using software to answer the key question when doing agroforestry on a watershed level, which tree to plant where and why? Welcome to Investing in Regenerative Agriculture. Where I interview key players in the field of regenerative agriculture, people who are scaling up the sector by bringing in new money or scaling up the practises on the ground. Especially in agroforestry systems this is key, as trees can’t walk to a more optimal spot. - The need for perennial based agriculture systems is huge! - Perennials, especially trees crops have huge value in watersheds - There really aren’t watersheds without perennials - Chestnuts and hazelnuts can play a role as stable crops - Chestnuts are known in French and Italian culture as the bread trees - There is a temperate band wrapping the world where cultures have been using chestnuts as staple crops for thousands of years - What is a GIS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_information_system - Chestnuts start only producing revenues after 5-10 years, so you better be sure where to plant them - Still recovering from student debt, Russell said out to find the optimum places to plant chestnuts - Russell started looking at the Connecticut river watershed (which is 700k hectares) and start removing the pieces of land not suited for chestnut production - Because of scale they removed all parcel sizes of less than 5 acres - Because of the need for machines they only looked at parcels with high slopes - Regenerative agriculture and agroforestry makes a lot more sense when you look at scale - What questions should you ask to understand of a farm is really contributing to the regeneration of a watershed? - What is the role of elderberries in the coevolution of the Connecticut river watershed, and how can we support that? - Human capacity to think at a watershed level is more limiting than computer power - Most of the support for agroforestry is either at a global level (Drawdown) or at a farm level (farm support), why not look at a bioregional level? - It would be way more valuable for the planet if people wanting to be creating regeneration instead of being ‘regenerative’ Fundamental question to ask as an impact investor interested in Watershed level agroforestry: What are you regenerating? Or what are you investing in to regenerate? Mark Sisson chats with Jacques DeVore about his book Bicycling Maximum Overload for Cyclists - a radical strength-based training program aimed at increasing cycling speed, athletic longevity, and overall health in half the training time. Rather than improving endurance by riding longer distances, you'll learn how to do it by reducing your riding time and adding heavy strength and power training. Traditionally cyclists and endurance athletes have avoided strength and power training, believing that the extra muscle weight will slow them down, but authors Jacques DeVore and Roy M. Wallack show that exactly the opposite is true. The Maximum Overload program uses weightlifting to create sustainable power and improved speed while drastically reducing training time and eliminating the dreaded deterioration that often occurs during the second half of a ride. A 40-minute Maximum Overload workout, done once or twice a week, can replace a long day in the saddle and lead to even better results. This comprehensive program includes unique takes on diet, interval training, hard and easy training, and sustainable power. Backed by the most trusted authority in the sport, Bicycling Maximum Overload for Cyclists is a book that no cyclist should be without. Jacques DeVore is the founder of the Sirens & Titans Fitness Training Centers in West Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, and licensed as an expert USA Cycling Coach. DeVore is the creator of the Maximum Overload training plan. DeVore has successfully trained hundreds of cyclists and triathletes with this program, including pro rider Dave Zabriskie. He lives in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, CA. Roy M. Wallack is a fitness columnist at the Los Angeles Times, has freelanced for Outside, Men's Journal, Bicycling, Runner's World, and Competitor, among other publications. He the author of seven books including Bike for Life, The Traveling Cyclist, and Barefoot Running Step-by-Step.
