Lasting effects from the worst economic downturn in our lifetime are having a staggering effect on financial health. In fact, a recent survey from Frost Bank shows current financial health as a result of the pandemic is low, with two in five (40%) Americans citing their financial situation as fair or poor.   In a time when much is out of our control, we can control our thoughts and actions which are proven to make a difference. Frost's research found that people who talk about their finances are 2x more likely to have better financial health. And, the people talking about money have something in common – optimism.   Michelle Gielan had a dream job at CBS News—and quit. As an anchor of two national news programs, she was disturbed by the amount of negativity in the news. She didn't want a child walking through the room while she was doing her job, hearing her continually telling negative stories about the world. But her time at CBS News also showed her the incredible power we have to create positive change by broadcasting a worldview that is more empowered, optimistic, and solution-focused.   Michelle left her job as a broadcaster at CBS News to study positive psychology—the science of happiness and human potential—under Dr. Martin Seligman (known as the founder of positive psychology) at the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center.   Michelle's research shows how your optimistic, empowered mindset is the most valuable resource in creating happiness and forward progress. Today, she runs the Institute for Applied Positive Research, investigating how mindset fuels happiness and success at organizations including Google, Boston Children's Hospital, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Pepsi Co.—and the results have been remarkable.  Michelle has a regular series in Harvard Business Review on happiness at work and was named one of top 10 authors on resilience by HBR.  She is the author of Broadcasting Happiness: The Science of Igniting and Sustaining Positive Change.   Michelle has a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Tufts University and a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. These days, when we open the news, all we see are the negative things happening around. We are exposed to these things every single minute that it becomes harder to find happiness. Will there be a way to look at these challenges in our lives that leaves us feeling empowered, ready to take action, and overcome them? Bestselling author and founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research, Michelle Gielan, knows the answer. Through her book, Broadcasting Happiness, she talks about how we can continually transmit information that influences other people, highlighting the importance on our part to be a positive influence on others. Michelle also defines rational optimism while stating some great research on how we can harness the feel-good hormones in our body. Chris Majer, CEO of the Human Potential Project, shares the beauty of consistency and resilience to continue to persevere in life. When the world seems like a repetition of the same failures and disappointments, it takes that desire to start again that will eventually lead us to winning on top of finding our true potential. Chris gets down into the type of learning we should aim for with the understanding that competence is produced not in mere motivation alone, but in practice. He sheds some light into what we can learn from athletes as well as how we can carry ourselves throughout the entire process of being learners. Love the show? Today’s mindful moments episode is all about setting your morning right with a quiet continuous breathing meditation. Whether you have 30 seconds or 30 minutes a morning, this will help get you clued into your own body every morning, and set you throughout your day with more positive self-talk and intention.   I recommend this meditation both before and after you take your basal body temperature. Nothing fancy, just quiet continuous breathing and some visualization to start your day out with a connection to yourself and your calmest potential. To share your own fertility story, please email me at hillary@ladypotions.com. I look forward to connecting with you, as you are what this podcast is all about.   Takeaway: [1:11] Today’s Mindful Moments Meditation focuses on the quiet and continuous breath. [2:31] Watching bad news early in the day had long-lasting effects and set the tone for a negative day. Shawn Achor and his wife Michelle Gielan, as originally reported in Harvard Business Review, found when you’re exposed to just three minutes of negative news first thing in the morning, you have a 27 percent higher likelihood of reporting that you had a bad day six to eight hours later, compared to a group exposed to positive, solutions-focused news. [4:18] If you like these meditations and want to sign up for my free 29-day meditation challenge I’ll be offering in April, go to the show notes — click here — and click the link to sign up so you’ll know as soon as it is live. If you are listening to this past April 2018 you can still click the link and you’ll be able to purchase the challenge to do on your own. [6:09] The key is to pay attention and observe the breath. This meditation does 4 x 4 breaths, with observing on the inhale and exhale. This is a technique that I just practiced with my teacher davidji and I absolutely love. I have a hard time following my breath, but this practice had me in a trance in a  matter of minutes. [9:02] It is recommended to do this meditation, take your basal body temperature and then practice the meditation again. Even as little as 5 minutes can be key to setting the tone for the day. [10:45] You will hear a bell at the 5, 10, 15 and 20-minute mark. This will remind us to gently move our focus back on the breath. [11:21] Meditation begins and offers a sweet spot of quiet and quickness. [35:59] Meditation ends and we focus on our physical surroundings and the peacefulness we cultivated.   References: Fertile Minds on LibSyn Fertile Minds on iTunes American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine   Continue Your Journey: Link to sign up for free 29-day meditation challenge fp306.isrefer.com/go/dreamlifea/hillary/ coupon code for $150 discount “dreamlife2018”   @ladypotions4u on Twitter @ladypotions4u on Instagram   My Website: Ladypotions.com Special Thanks to Christopher Lloyd Clarke for music

Our guest Michelle Gielan is a former national news anchor at CBS. After getting tired of telling negative news stories, she began studying how to deliver negative news in a way that empowers people and helps them see a path forward. What she discovered is that the messages we choose to talk about can transform how people view their world. Dealing with Negative News Maintaining a positive and optimistic mindset in the face of negative news or people is important. If someone is being negative around you, engage in a strategic retreat. For example, if you are in an office environment and the person sitting next to you is engaging in a negative phone conversation, you could put on noise canceling headphones or reorient your desk. Small changes like these can really transform your day at the office. The less negative and useless information you're exposed to, the less you're going to retransmit negativity to other people. Transforming Negative Interactions with Other People While as a society we tend to believe that we can't change people, this isn't quite true. You can transform your interactions with negative people by creating a string of positive experiences with them. As a result, you are effectively rewriting the narrative between yourself and them. For example, if someone is constantly complaining about the boss, you are blessing the situation by engaging with them. If you steer them in the positive direction instead, this will foster less negative water cooler talk and more solutions-focused discussions. Changing Your Mindset with Positive Habits When we engage in positive habits, we can change our levels of happiness, optimism, and wellbeing. Simple gratitude exercises can change how you view the world. The key is to establish these habits and maintain them in the long term. To do this, keep exercises new and different to help establish a routine. Eventually these positive habits will transform your mindset and help you build new neural pathways. Where our Happiness Comes From 10% of our long term happiness come from our external circumstances 40%-50% comes from our baseline level of happiness 40%-50% comes from how we process the world. More and more, studies are showing that how you think can influence how you experience the world. Influencing Your Environment People often wonder whether a negative or positive person has more influence in an environment. Studies show that it is neither – the most expressive person is the one who wins the battle for culture. In a business environment, you can increase your chances of success by encouraging expressions of positivity in the office or in meetings. The key is to maintain a healthy ratio between positivity and negativity. Start Your Day on a Positive Note A recent study showed that watching just 3 minutes of negative news each day increases the likelihood of a person reporting their day as “bad” 6 to 8 hours later by 27%. Don't start your day with negative news Instead, seek out for transformative news stories. These are solutions-focused stories that will help you start your day off on a positive note. If you have a commute, craft this time into something that is fueling – listen to podcasts or audiobooks that help your brain get in the right state of mind for the day. Fact Checking Michelle has a technique called Fact Checking that she uses to deal with stressful situations. 1. Write the stress down2. Write down the reasons why you feel this way3. Write down some positive aspects of the situation This short process calms the brain down and helps it transition from a default of stress to a default of thriving. Top Lifestyle Tips to Create More Positivity Power Lead: Start conversations, emails, phone calls, and meetings with something positive and meaningful to set a positive tone. E-mailing Positivity: Before you look at your inbox, open up a new message and write a 2-minute email from your social support network and tell them why they're meaningful to you.
