This week was a landmark for the Brook Reading Podcast - my first interview with a comedian! I had the opportunity to chat with the hysterical, fantastically funny Kyndra Crump! Ken hails from Atlanta, Georgia, and has been performing in clubs in and around her area. She has also been featured on a YouTube show on the Rise Up Worldwide channel called “Laugh at Home” and hosts her own podcast, The Kyndra Crump Show. You can find her on Instagram @thekyndracrumpshow and check out her virtual show at the link below! This week you get the chance to listen to a pre-recorded episode that Gemma and James took part in with Melissa from the Brook Reading Podcast. We review Gemma's favourite film; 10 things I hate about you. We also review Not Another Teen Movie without planning to, typical #Codswallop haha! :) Movie Synopsis: Adapted from William Shakespeare's play "The Taming of the Shrew," 10 Things I Hate About You starts off with Cameron, new student at Padua High, sitting in the office of the quirky guidance counselor Ms. Perky. He is then shown around the school by Michael, who will become his best friend. During his tour is when Cameron first sees Bianca Stratford, a beautiful sophomore with one problem: she isn't allowed to date. And neither is her "shrew" sister, Katarina, a senior who loves indie rock and feminist prose and hates conformity. But Kat and Bianca's father alters his house rule: now, Bianca can date... as long as Kat has a date, too. Now, in order for Cameron to date Bianca, he has to find someone to date Kat. So Michael helps him enlist the help of pretty-boy/jerk/model Joey Donner, tricking him into thinking that *he* will get to take Bianca out if he pays someone to take out Kat. His choice: Patrick Verona, a bad-boy with a mysterious reputation--some say he ate a live duck once, others that he lit a state trooper on fire, and even more claim that he had a brief porn career. Will Patrick win Kat's heart? Will Cameron win Bianca's? Or will everything hit the fan...? IF this is your first time listening to Talking Codswallop, please can we ask you to follow Talking Codswallop on Facebook, Instagram + Twitter @CodswallopPod. REMEMBER TO CLICK SUBSCRIBE to the podcast to get all of the up to date episodes. We love our current audience, but we are always looking to grow. #IndiePodcastsNeedYourHelp!!!

Tonight's episode of the Brook Reading Podcast highlights the lives of three maverick women who have paved the way for the modern woman, Edith Clarke, Emma Willard, and Marie Severin. I also implore you to help in any way you can to the victims of Hurricane Ida in Louisiana and New Jersey. In the show notes this evening, I have included links for the Red Cross, Project Hope, as well as my cousin Sarah's GoFundMe (she and her family lost their home due to the storm). Tonight is a very special episode of the Brook Reading Podcast! I cover a book by an author I've never read, along with a guest who I've never met AND who's never been on the show! Dan from the Assorted Goods Podcast joins me to discuss Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel, “Slaughterhouse Five”. We get into time jumping, Vonnegut's tragic life, and the origins of reading and education in a myriad of ways. I was also successfully able to pronounce “Tralfamadorian”! Dan was such a wonderful guest, so eloquent and knowledgeable on the topic, and we also had so much fun! It was such a privilege to have him on the show, and I hope he returns to the Brook soon! You can find Dan's podcasts, Assorted Goods and Fuckin' Eh, on all the podcatchers, as well as on Twitter and Instagram (included below). Episode 87 is the first of a many-headed beast that, hopefully, everyone enjoys and learns from. I explore multiple pieces of media stemming from the tumultuous period of American History, the 1960s and 70s. I introduce to you the series entitled, “Important Women Who Did Important Stuff”! Tonight, along with my best friend and special guest host, Alison, we take a look at the Hulu Original Series, Mrs. America, and give you a glimpse into the lives of the key figures in the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment. We also cover an in-depth lesson on how to share memes with friends on Facebook, and rage over the childish reactions by adults over a young girl's entrepreneurial venture. In the following weeks, I will continue to explore the series, as well as cover the books, The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, and The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off by Gloria Steinem. I will also offer the research I found about our major players, Steinem, Friedan, Phyliss Schlafly, and Shirley Chisholm. Just in time for Women's History Month, I will be reviewing “Just As Long As We're Together” and the MasterClass Series, where you can learn creative skills with Ms. Blume herself! Episode 75 is a brand new take on Brook Reading, and I am so excited to share it with you! This week, I commiserate on some bad news regarding a periodical staple in my life, discuss the good and bad of “too many options”, and RAVE over my reaction (finally, I know) to “Captain Marvel”. I also join my fellow sailor-type, potty-mouthed podcasters, The Countdown Movie and TV Reviews Podcast, in doing in a little good for society and raising money for charity. Episode 74 FINALLY reviews the ending, Parts 2 & 3, of Stephen and Owen King's exciting and super twisty novel, “Sleeping Beauties”. I try my best to refresh everyone's memories of ALL the characters involved in this massive tome, relish in the creative manner in which the King men take on the battle of the sexes and create these scenarios that thematically represent them, and dedicate this show to every woman I know, all of whom have had to find her own version of “Our Place”. Episode 72 of Brook Reading falls during our massive podcasting and arts event celebrating all things ghoulish and gory, All the Horror! I sit down with Victoria, the host of TWO - yes, count them - TWO Horror themed shows on YouTube, indie/cult/horror, and The Horror Academic (on which I recently appeared). Tonight, we continue our conversation of the John Carpenter (AND Debra Hill - see what I did there?) classic, “Halloween” (1978). This film is a classic for so many reasons, including the many scenes discussing rampant teenage ass… (you'll just have to listen). We also discuss the role of women in horror, get Vic's expertise on the final girl and slasher movies, gush the amazing, instantly recognizable score of “Halloween”, as well as all of the talented people involved in an undertaking that would take on a life of its own. During this October, take a moment and follow #Allthehorror or follow @allthehorror18 on Twitter to continue receiving updates on the daily content provided by some of the most talented podcasters and creatives I have had the privilege to work with. Episode 71 covers part 2 of our massive review of “IT: Chapter Two”. Alison from the four parts of “IT” on Brook Reading, Victoria of Pocket Change Productions and the Horror Academic, and our good friend and fellow King fanatic, Crissa, discuss FURTHER our opinions on the recent iteration of the Stephen King masterpiece. As we are wont to do, we litter our conversation with Family Guy soundbites, some inner child therapy, the debate about the worth of C.S. Lewis versus J.R.R. Tolkien, and rants from all of us - INCLUDING an extra special one from Sean, from the What Does It Matter? Podcast! He tells us his experience seeing the movie and some of his thoughts on plot, characterization, and oh yeah...how he knew how I felt BEFORE we got a chance to talk! THANK YOU SO MUCH, BROOKWORMS, FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT! Love, Peace, and ClownFace! “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real, too. Episode 70 is my first film review! My friends (and former co-hosts of Brook Reading) and I dissect each nuance of “IT: Chapter Two” after a Stephen King themed weekend together! Alison from the four parts of “IT” on Brook Reading, Victoria of Pocket Change Productions and the Horror Academic, and our good friend and fellow King fanatic, Crissa, discuss minority stereotypes and how they were butchered within this storyline. We look at the myriad of differences from the book and the movie and how the movie did not do the book justice. Other topics include creepy fetishes, bratty youngins, Blumhouse, SPOILER ALERT!, “Pinhead's my sexy monster!”, and so on. We fit this story into the horror genre of today versus when we grew up. Does this fit as a horror movie today, independent from the book? Yes. Did we think that choices were made based on the generation of people that will seek this movie out? Absolutely. Did we enjoy it? Well...you'll have to listen and find out! “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real, too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.” - Stephen King Shoutouts: The Circle Opens Podcast Promos: ALL THE HORROR Promo featuring 2 Girls on a Bench ALL THE HORROR Promo featuring Brook Reading! :) What Does It Matter? Welcome to another adventure within the multiverse and Happy Friday the 13th! It seems like so long since we've taken a trip to the Voorhees Universe to discuss Friday the 13th! However, the wait is now over! Last year, we started an adventure to cover every single JASON VOORHEES movie but only on Friday the 13th. Back your bags for Camp Crystal Lake for another round with the slasher icon because Friday the 13th is upon us. The original Friday the 13th is such a beloved classic. Though, how does fare against its' predecessor. In this episode, we're discussing everything from the humanizing factor of Jason Voorhees, mythology building, the film's use of grief and more. Plus, as an added bonus, we're sitting down with special effects studio, Amos SFX. Plus a very special shout out to A Brook Reading Podcast for one of our recreation elements within the episode. And more importantly, if you or someone you know is struggling with suicide, addiction, self-harm or depression - please free feel to reach out. Remember when The Fabulous Steve was here? Well, we chatted with him about the days of personal ads, and how low-tech things were compared to the hookup apps of today. Pitney said he'd never used any of those apps and was pretty adamant about it. Then suddenly, his inner sex monster awakened and his phone was burning up with Grindr and Scruff! I know you want to hear why he says Grindr is the "armpit of the gay world." Hear the story of one especially trashy hookup he had to send packing, as well as some icky blind dates Amelia had back in the day. And there's a bedbug outbreak in San Antonio that originates in the seediest of places! This week's Year of the Vagina lesson is all about the "husband stitch." You're gonna get mad. This week for Episode 67, I review the novella, “The Body” by Stephen King and the film adaptation, “Stand by Me”. I butcher Kiefer Sutherland's name a LOT, confuse the race of Vern because of my childish television habits, and inadvertently plug the IMDB Journey podcast! I do also talk about my opinion on this wonderful story and look forward to continuing the Summer of King! Quote from Chapter 1: “The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them - words shrink things that seemed limitless when they're were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for want of an understanding ear.” *citation below* [King, Stephen. “Different Seasons”. It saddens me to say that this massive undertaking is complete, but I hope that you enjoy it as much as we did, and I can't wait to hear your comments! This episode is the beginning of a very important set of episodes for Brook Reading, and for me personally. My favorite book of all time - outside of genres, authors, eras, etc. - is Stephen King's “IT”. King is one of the authors that brought my friends and I together, and “IT” specifically is one of the special experiences shared by myself and my best friend, Alison. She joins me on this journey to talk about friendship, coming of age during trying times, feminism, and the importance of having someone on your side who understands you, even when you doubt yourself. We also tie some loose ends from my BUST Extravaganza episode, learn about an amazing new podcast, and I tell Alison about the magic of bullet journaling! This episode includes: Movie discussions of “IT” TV Miniseries (1990) and “IT: Chapter One” (2017), as well as Part One of the novel from Chapters 1 - 3. It's our strangest Christmas Special yet! Which, let's be honest, is saying something. The Martian Choir sings, Sean Faust of What Does It Matter Podcast sings, Tricia's (2 Girls on a Bench) kids sing, plus special greetings from Melissa of The Brook Reading Podcast and Gerald & Natalie from the Conspeared Podcast who don't sing but drop by to spread some holiday cheer. Also a sneak peak at our New Year's special Cult Movie Trailer A-Go-Go! and some classic Christmas ads. Someone spiked our eggnog and we're okay with that. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Episode 35 of the Brook Reading Podcast is all about singling out those who stand up for others. Perfect timing what with Veterans' Day a week behind us. This week, I briefly discuss and prepare the novel “Fever 1793” for a more in-depth discussion next time. I also pay respect to the following: Laurie Halse Anderson, an author that speaks for those who cannot Stan Lee, a creator who illuminates the light within us, even when we are still in the dark And, Tricia & Siana from the 2 Girls on a Bench podcast, 2 friends who, through their actions, rebuild their damaged community with food, laughter, and love. Swears, Spoilers and Kids with Guns Melissa and Morgan both read Rage. Then we both had a bit of a rage. What is it about this terrifyingly suburban gothic and thoroughly unrealistic novel that inspires real teenagers to do some very real and horrific acts? How much of these acts can really be attributed to King's juvenalia? And what would it take for you to kill your own creation? We also discuss gun control, cultural violence and King's status as a gothic author. This week, we swim the dark waters of film noir as we review the master of all detective novels, "The Maltese Falcon" by Dashiell Hammett. We talk communists, femme fatales, fall guys, and rant a little about the recent movie, "I feel pretty". (Warning: 5 Minute Rant includes SPOILERS!) Our promo break includes the promos from the We Watched a Thing Podcast and, my fellow murder mystery aficionado, the St. Paul Filmcast. Check both these shows out! You can find the Brook Reading Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Libsyn via direct download. Any reviews on Apple would be greatly appreciated! Contact us on Twitter @brookreadingpod, or via email at: brookreading@gmail.com. Thanks!
This week, on a shorter than usual episode of the Brook Reading Podcast, I let Tim Curry and the cast of the cult classic "Clue" help me explain the plot twists and "red herrings" of the children's novel, "The Westing Game".
This is our first episode of the Brook Reading Podcast! We hope you can join us on this virtual tour of all things literary! In this episode, we square away all logistics, fangirl over John Hurt, and listen to the magical sounds of running water!
