The long running Whakaari White Island trial against companies and individuals accused of health and safety failings is now down to one lone defendant. Two booking agents accused of health and safety failings in the Whakaari/White Island trial have had the charges against them dismissed, leaving Whakaari Management Limited as the only defendant. It comes just a week after charges against the three owners of the Island, the Buttle brothers, were dismissed. Our reporter Lucy Xia has more.
Profits ahead of employee and tourist safety. Lawyers have opened Worksafe's case against the owners of Whakaari White Island today, saying the Buttle brothers had not done enough to inform visitors of the risks. It's three and a half years since the eruption, which killed 22 people and injured 25 others. Lawyers say inadequate infrastructure on the island made survival and recovery of some more difficult. A warning, some parts of this story may be distressing. Emma Stanford has been at the Auckland District Court.
Three commercial helicopter tour operators have pleaded guilty and will no longer face trial over health and safety failings in the lead-up to the deadly Whakaari eruption in 2019. A judge alone trial is due to start next week, at Auckland District Court. Today's guilty pleas takes the number of defendants down to six, including the island's owners and three members of the Buttle family. The last minute guilty plea means the start of the trial will be delayed by one day. Judge Evangelos Thomas told the court WorkSafe will need time to adjust its case. Amy Williams has been at the court hearing and joined Lisa Owen in studio. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6330721572112

1966 kom hennes åttonde bok, "Jag bor i Sverige".

A year and half on from the Whakaari/White Island tragedy there is still confusion about the government's responsibility for public safety on the island. Forty-seven people were on the island in December 2019 when it erupted and 22 died. The Buttle family hold the rights to restrict, or prevent, access to the island, while the Local Government Minister, Nanaia Mahuta has territorial authority for 11 offshore islands - responsibilities include resource consents and emergency management. Sam Olley has the story.

The Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood is confident that WorkSafe is adequately resourced to prosecute people and organisations in relation to last year's deadly eruption at Whakaari/White Island. WorkSafe says the Whakaari explosion was a tragedy that was unexpected but not unforseeable. The health and safety authority has charged 10 organisations and three individuals over the eruption in December 2019. The owners of Whakaari have confirmed they are among those charged in relation to last year's deadly eruption. The island is owned by the Buttle family, through Whakaari Management Limited and its three directors, James, Peter and Andrew Buttle, who have confirmed they are the three individuals charged. Two government agencies, GNS Science and the National Emergency Management Agency, have also been charged. White Island Tours and Volcanic Air Safaris also both say they're facing charges. There were 47 people on the island when the volcano erupted, and 22 of them were killed or later died of their injuries. Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood speaks to Corin Dann.

This week on the PRmoment Podcast, in the latest of our life stories series, I’m pleased to welcome co-owner and managing director of Chameleon Tom ButtleChameleon is an independent tech PR firm in London with a fee income of £2.1m and 20 people. The business was originally owned by Helen Holland before Tom Butttle and Tom Berry (what are the chances!) completed an MBO of the business in April 2017.Here’s a summary of what Tom and I discussed:[00:01:08] How Tom was a late starter in PR, having previously worked in HR, but has since had a pretty accelerated career path. [3.8s] [00:03:35] Tom talks about the advantages of moving into PR from a different sector. [0.9s] [00:05:04] Why Tom took a pay cut to move into PR. [0.4s] [00:07:15] Tom tells us how, and I quote, " he fell in love with content and storytelling".[00:09:21] How Tom has benefited from having a mentor in his career.[00:12:56] Tom worked for Flieshman Hillard before moving to Chameleon – he talks us through why this was an important stage of his career. Tom also compares the differences of working in a large agency with a smaller one. [00:16:58] How Tom, when he joined Chameleon, went about updating the content services of the agency.[00:19:21] How Tom and Tom Berry restructured, repackaged and modernised the business.[00:20:10] How Chameleon went about reducing the number of clients their teams worked on.[00:20:21] Why Chameleon resigned a number of accounts whilst they were modernising the business. [00:20:43] How Chameleon managed to win some big-name clients that supported their new strategy. [00:21:28] Why, having initially been bought into the business to prepare it for a trade sale, Tom and his colleague Tom Berry decided that they wanted to take the business on themselves.[00:27:38] When you need a broker, when you need an accountant and when you need a lawyer in the process of buying or selling a business.[00:32:14] Tom talks about achieving a balance between personal investments, loans and borrowing on the future income of a business when raising the finance to purchase a business.[00:34:01] Why it works that Tom and his business partner Tom Berry are "not best mates but just good friends." [00:36:41] Why Tom believes that PR people say "yes" to much.[00:37:45] Why overservicing stops PR firms from being able to nurture your team because you can't promote, reward and train people if you're not making any money. [00:38:57] How the bridge from a client-service mindset as a junior member of staff to the consultative/advisory approach of a director can be difficult in public relations firms.

Rockmusikern och sångerskan Kajsa Grytt tog sig an just Åkessons Självbiografi. Love can strike in the most unlikely of circumstances, and so it was for Wathnail Rovers acting club chairman Brian Buttle when on a recent business trip to the Italian Dolomites. Brian went to Italy with the sole intention of securing the return of former club manager Luigi Lambrini, little did he expect that what he’d actually find was love.....amoure. A chance overnight stay in the Hotel Pirlo situated adjacent to the town piazza is where he met her, Isadora, a woman who was to re-light the flame within him, a flame he’d imagined long extinguished. Brian returned home completely smitten and with a steely determination that he and his new love should start a new life together. However there was one major obstacle to his dream in the formidable shape of Mrs Buttle. A divorce would be messy and ultimately he knew very costly for him, but he had to do something, he couldn’t just let her go. Lambrini Returns! Good cheer for all Wathnail fans, OK so it’s not actually Luigi who is coming back to Rovers as club manager but his twin brother Carlo. We here at Wathnail are all convinced that Carlo can emulate the success that his brother enjoyed at his short stint at the club when we actually made the League Two play offs. Carlo’s immediate aim is to go one better and to guide the club to automatic promotion in his first year, we of course all wish him well in his quest and here’s hoping Carlo! 2015 may have just started but the guys on BOP are still deep in the process of knocking out last year's backlog. On this episode, Jon, Jonny, and Stan discuss a huge amount of 2014 releases. Whether it's Selma, Foxcatcher, Inherent Vice, or The Hobbit, all of them (even Stan!) have seen a bunch of new movies. Then in our second segment we tear into a new batch of your listener mail with reaction to our discussion of Do The Right Thing from Episode 97, Bollywood, and a two part question from our friend Buttle. Be sure to send in your listener mail for our fast approaching 100th episode to crosstawk@gmail.com and to get at us on Twitter (@crosstawk). We'll see you in two weeks when we go over our Top 5 of 2014 and discuss Karl's Movie of the Month, Blues Brothers!
Movies which attain cult status are rare, and there is no surefire formula for creating one. Clue (1985) is the perfect example here! The cast has a list of stars that could put a modern blockbuster to shame, and yet this film did rather poorly at the box office in 1985. Featuring a special guest commentator, Brandon, Clay and Jarod dissect the film, explore some trivia, and try to figure out what it is about Clue that made it such a cult phenomenon!
Well we're back for another week in Full Distort cast (Because we shout into the microphones). We Browse Reddit, Discuss how crappy the 90's were and Dave tells us about his sexual awakening that was growing up in England. Turn down your volume and turn up your enjoyment! We start things off with Iron Man 3 before getting to such films as Upstream Color, Kumare, Limitless and The Best of Both Worlds. Then, in the second segment, it's time for another Post Office Poison wherein Zach talks about dinosaurs (surprise!), Buttle asks us about bad endings, Oswald asks about our favorite documentaries, Terry wants to know our favorite countries for foreign film output and we wrap up with Gillian probing for our thoughts on film criticism.
