Welcome to the Areni Global podcast. Today's episode is part of our Insight Series, and it is called, “Can You Scale Up Fine Wine? In Conversation with Vianney Gravereaux, Ivan Massonnat, Dan Petroski & Joao Silva”. This discussion tackles how to drive profitability and achieve financial sustainability within the realm of fine wine. Let's talk about the problems and reasons behind the necessity to scale up in the fine wine industry, and secondly, determine the ideal scale for fine wine production while addressing the challenges, obstacles, and steps to reach that optimal size. Fine wine has always relied on rarity and scarcity to establish its appeal. Fine wine thrives on the idea (real or perceived) of small scale, artisanal, never-changing production. First, if you haven't checked out my new site – shout out to Polly Hammond, my dear friend and a complete rockstar at www.5forests.com!   This time, we decided to do this show as a good set up for next week's show with Stefania Fuselli, one of the sisters who runs Le Vigne di Silvia, an outstanding family winery that the Patrons and I visited while in Bolgheri. I am so excited to share that winery with you, but I felt it would be a better experience if we first explained what Bolgheri is, since as MC Ice points out, it's still a little obscure to many people.   Map: Wikipedia The bottom line: Bolgheri is the birthplace of the ‘Super Tuscan' movement   Bolgheri is a small DOC on the Tuscan coast in the province of Livorno, where the hills taper off to the sea. Bolgheri itself is a tiny village (blink and you may miss it!), famed for a cypress-lined avenue that is one of the most photographed sites in Italy! Bolgheri is home to the OG “Super Tuscan” wine – Sassicaia (Tenuta San Guido), which now has its own DOC – Bolgheri Sassicaia (the only monopole in Italy). Photo: Bolgheri Mountains.

Welcome to Episode 984 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Maya Dalla Valle, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today's guest: Maya was destined to be a winemaker. In 1986, the year she was conceived, her parents, Naoko and Gustav, made their first vintage of estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. The following year—the year she was born—they planted Maya's Vineyard, a 5-acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon that has become one of the most revered winegrowing sites in America. In 1992, this remarkable vineyard yielded a wine that would go on to earn Dalla Valle's first perfect 100-point score from legendary critic Robert Parker. Growing up at Dalla Valle in the company of winemakers like Heidi Barrett, Tony Soter and Mia Klein infused Maya's formative years with a sense of place and purpose that has come to define her adult life. In 2017, Dalla Valle became a true multigenerational winery, when Maya joined the winery as director. Committed to earning her place in the family business before coming to Dalla Valle, Maya holds a master's degree in viticulture and enology from Cornell University, and a master's of business and science degree in vineyard and winery management from France's prestigious Bordeaux Science Agro. Equally important, Maya gained invaluable hands-on winemaking experience at Ornellaia e Masseto, Bodegas Rolland, Pétrus and Château Latour. “Dalla Valle is my home. It is also my family's legacy,” says Maya. “I am so excited to be working alongside my mom. Dalla Valle is her life's work, and what she has created is remarkable. I also know that the greatest wineries are judged in terms of decades and generations, and that our story is still being written. I am honored to be carrying our family's legacy into a second generation.” To learn more about today's guest visit: https://www.dallavallevineyards.com/people/maya-dalla-valle/ info@DallaValleVineyards.com About today's Host: Cynthia Chaplin is a Vinitaly International Academy certified Italian Wine Ambassador, a professional sommelier with Fondazione Italiana Sommelier, a member of Le Donne del Vino, and a Professor of Italian wine and culture. Born in the USA, Cynthia moved to Europe in 1990 where she has lived in Spain, Belgium, England and Italy. She chose to center her career in Rome and immerse herself in the Italian wine sector, which is her passion. She has taught university students and expats, works with embassies, corporations and private clients, creating and presenting tastings, events, seminars and in-depth courses. Cynthia is a wine writer, translator, and a judge at international wine and sake competitions. She consults with restaurants and enotecas assisting in the development of comprehensive wine lists and excellent food pairings, as well as advising private clients who want to develop a comprehensive Italian wine collection. They're both such high-quality vintages, but I would say six months ago I would have said '18. I've been really loving the '18s and the depth that those wines have, and I feel like they're very philosophical wines that can continue to draw you back and are very intriguing and really make you think."She continued: "But I love the charm of the 19s as well. 'Friendly' is not the right word to use for it, but they have this aromatic intensity that I feel very drawn to between the florality and the fruit. It's very appealing. So it's a tough call between the two, I would say, but today I think the '19's are drawing me in a little more.""That's a nice problem to have," James wryly replies.

He studied Economics at the University of Florence and entered the wine business in Italy in the early 1970s, eventually becoming CEO of Rémy Cointreau's Italian company. After 12 years as CEO of Antinori, he took on the challenge of reorganizing the worldwide distribution for the Remy Cointreau Group. At the same time, he started consulting for Frescobaldi on their joint venture project called “Luce della Vite,” with the Robert Mondavi Corporation. In 1996, Giovanni became CEO of Frescobaldi and in 1999 became CEO of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, which produces Ornellaia and Masseto. About Ornellaia ORNELLAIA is synonymous with Tuscany. The estate encompasses 115 hectares under vine along the Tuscan coastline. Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore is the estate's top wine, followed by Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia and Le Volte dell'Ornellaia, and the whites Ornellaia Bianco and Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia. In little over thirty years (the first vintage of Ornellaia was in 1985). The wines here are famous and coveted all over the world. About Masseto Masseto, since 1986 is one wine, from one vineyard, and one estate. The potential of the acclivity where the Masseto vineyard stands along the Tuscan coast was glimpsed at the beginning of the Eighties. The blue clay, refreshing coastal breezes and the superlative refraction of the light guaranteed by the Mediterranean Sea all contribute to the intriguing blend of power, elegance and complexity that distinguishes the wine from the estate. Since the 2017 vintage, Masseto has been accompanied by the second wine Massetino. Both begin their journey on the Masseto hillslope in 11 hectares densely planted under vine and progress from prized grapes to coveted bottles of wine that refine in the estate's cellar, designed by architectural firm Zito Mori, which was inaugurated in April 2019. This marks the point of departure for both wines around the world, every autumn, through Place de Bordeaux. INTERVIEW AND TASTINGInternational wine critic and Masterclass.com Instructor James Suckling recently released his Napa and Sonoma report focusing on the 2018 vintage. As part of his research, he spoke to two big-name wineries together to find out more about their "secret" project they have been working on together. DVO is a new joint venture between Napa winery Dalla Valle and Tuscan winery Ornellaia, and their first wine will be released in 2021. Tuscany's Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a jewel of the Frescobaldi family estates, making wines that are not only among the best of Italy, but also some of the most collectible and sought after in the world. In turn, Dalla Valle Vineyards is one of Napa Valley's most admired family-run wineries. These two 'first growths' of Tuscany and Napa Valley are now combining their skills to create a new wine, that James described as "a beautiful first release, refined and with a beautiful sensibility". In this exclusive podcast, you can hear James speak to Axel Heinz, winemaker at Ornellaia, and Naoko Dalla Valle and Maya Dalla Valle, founder and director respectively (and mother and daughter) at Dalla Valle. Listen in to hear how this collaboration came about and to hear details of this first wine (tasting note below) and of the 2018 vintage.  DVO Napa Valley Rutherford 2018Read the full Napa report here: NEW NAPA VALLEY WINES HIGHLIGHT HARMONY AND REFINEMENT WITH 2018 VINTAGE (1,093 WINES RATED)

INTERVIEW AND TASTINGInternational wine critic and Masterclass.com Instructor James Suckling had a tasting and conversation with the team from Tenuta Argentiera. Located in the Bolgheri district on Tuscany's coastline, the estate of Tenuta Argentiera has vineyards positioned on a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean toward Corsica. It is neighbored by some of Italy's most famous wineries: Guado al Tasso, Ornellaia and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia). The prime location is complemented by a world-class team led by Federico Zileri, CEO, as well as the owner of the estate, Stanislaus Turnauer, winemaker Nicolo Carrara and General Manager Leonardo Raspini. In 2018, their Argentiera Bolgheri Superiore 2015 took the second spot on our list of top 100 Italian wines. On July 13, James tasted with them and tried the Ventaglio 2015 and 2016 wines. These two new single-vineyard reds, based on cabernet franc, represent the best of Tenuta Argentiera's production in terms of location, pedoclimatic conditions and grape quality. The grapes come from the most beautiful and best of the estate's vineyards, where the sun's rays reach unhindered throughout the days, leading to perfect ripening conditions. Both wines had good balance and precision, and James commented that the wines had “superb” tannin quality which was beautifully integrated into the wines. You can hear more of what they thought about the wines in this podcast.

The Vincast - a wine podcast with The Intrepid Wino

Anna Martens began her wine career just outside of her home town of Adelaide, working with one of Australia's foremost authorities on winemaking, Brian Croser. After spending almost ten years at Petaluma, she wanted to spread her wine-wings. She spent some time in New Zealand studying for the Master of Wine, but soon ended up working at the prestigious Super-Tuscan estate of Ornellaia. This was where she met her eventual husband Eric Nairoo, and through his own business importing into the UK, she was introduced to natural wines. Eventually they decided to find somewhere she could produce her own wine, and they chose the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna, where she now produces Vino di Anna.
