Ep 538: The Grape Mini-Series - Cabernet Franc Refresh

Wine for Normal People

The Cabernet Sauvignon refresh was episode 535, so I thought that on the heels of that it was time to do a refresh Cab Sauv's parents. This week is the Cabernet Franc refresh and next week will be Sauvignon Blanc, so you can have the full picture of the parents and the offspring.  Cabernet Franc is an underrated grape and things seem to be changing rapidly with it these days. In the past, it has often been used purely as a blending grape, except in the Loire Valley, but today it's taking center stage. Producers and wine drinkers have realized that if the best wines of Château Cheval Blanc on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, have a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc, maybe there is something to this grape that should be explored.    Although Cab Franc still doesn't have widespread popular acclaim, it is extremely important in the wine world. Today –it  grows everywhere from France, Italy, the United States, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Hungary, Washington State, Croatia, Israel, South Africa, Turkey, Slovenia, Uruguay, and more. Plantings are growing and I see a bigger future for this grape.    In this show I cover: The origins and DNA of the grape Cab Franc in the vineyard Aromas and flavors Regions: France: Loire, Bordeaux, Southwest France Italy: Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Bolgheri Hungary: Villány Canada United States: Finger Lakes, Long Island, Virginia, and a little bit on Napa, Sonoma, and Washington South America: Argentina, Chile I cover food pairings and serving temperatures too.     Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Become a member today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople _______________________________________________________________   Check out my exclusive sponsor, Wine Access.  They have an amazing selection -- once you get hooked on their wines, they will be your go-to! What Does Cabernet Franc Mean? - Wes Hagen

Wes Hagen is a wine educator, a wine historian, a vineyard manager, a writer of AVA proposals, and a damn good winemaker. He is a Renaissance man in the world of wine, connected inextricably to Santa Barbara County, where his family brand Clos Pepe made some of the finest Pinot Noirs of the 1990s and 2000s. He is also a fan of Cabernet Franc. Below, he gives Wine Saves Lives! he answers the question: What Does Cabernet Franc Mean? The Cab Franc people are how Pinot Noir people used to be. Cab Franc is the, is the grape to me that's attracting the seekers. It's attracting the people that are searching for something outside the norm. And so, to me, it's weird — because when I'm in that room full of Cab Franc people, I kind of feel the same way that I feel now in a post Sideways world at World of Pinot Noir. These are my people. I feel like, like I mentioned, The Dead Show and one of my descriptions earlier… and I used to, follow the Grateful Dead quite a bit. And, um, when you're in the show, it feels like these, these are your people. And I feel like, I feel like Cab Franc people are my people.I feel like, uh, I feel like the same way about them, that they're the ones that are looking, they're just in front of the trend, but the trend is never going to happen the way that we imagine it's going to happen. It's not going to be a Cab Sauv. It's always going to be a little bit sort of edgy, and I think that's where Cab Franc would prefer to be. This is a public episode. Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

CheapWineFinder Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2021 7:18

The Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is sourced from vineyards in the Central Coast AVA of California. The Weed Cellars website only mentions Paso Robles as the contributing region, but the label says Central Coast (Paso Robles AVA is inside the Central Coast AVA. I would imagine most of the grapes came from Paso, but not enough of a percentage to show it on the label.Weed Cellars is a new wine, beer, and spirits company, and no, there is no cannabis or hemp in any of their products. They have a full and interesting line of wines. A $99 Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, a Chenin Blanc/ Viognier blend, and a Prosecco. They also offer Vodka, Texas Whiskey, and beer brewed in San Antonio. The wine, except for the Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, all list for $14.99. I found the Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 on-sale for $12.99. I have seen brands that offered a wide array of wine choices before, but I can not recall a wine brand that offered beer and spirits. The Weed Cellars website takes a unique approach to explain the wine selections. Instead of detailed technical notes, which I love, and most folks probably ignore, they offer a Youtube video of their in-house Sommelier giving her tasting notes, short and sweet but informative. The Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 has a good amount of age for a $13 to $15 California Cabernet Sauvignon. You can tell a good deal about a bottle of wine by its vintage date upon release. A 2020 or 2019 wine in March of 2021 will most likely be a young wine meant to be enjoyed right away and not cellared. A 2018 or 2017 vintage wine had extensive production techniques and needed additional time to find its balance.A 2017 Red wine in this price category is relatively rare. With value-priced wine, time is money, and the sooner the wine is ready for release, the better. The Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 goes against that principle, which is a good sign. A quality California Cabernet Sauvignon needs oak barrel aging and the extra time for the flavors to come together. The tasting video mentioned both French and American oak and offered a quick but useful description of the flavors each type of oak provides, so check it out. There are a couple of links to the Weed Cellars website sprinkled thru-out this write-up.I am looking forward to the tasting portion of this review. Weed Cellars is taking a new and modern approach to marketing its offerings, which I enjoy. Most wine marketing is stuck 20 years in the past; it will be interesting to see if this model is the way forward. The alcohol content is 14%.Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Tasting NotesThe color is clear, but dark black cherry red; there is as much black as there is red. The nose is ripe and juicy but also slightly dark and brooding. There is blackberry, molasses, mocha coffee, Altoid's candy spice, black pepper, blackberry, and mint. The Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a full-bodied, full-flavored Cab Sauv. It has excellent weight on the palate. It tastes like blackberry, oak spice, toasty vanilla, licorice, black pepper, and plum. The mid-palate brings a sharp slap of orange zest, raspberry, a slight tug from the tannins (a welcome and good thing), and blueberry. The tannins and the acidity are well-balanced, the flavors are strong and pleasurable. This is the first California Cabernet Sauvignon I have had since reviewing the Legende Bordeaux Rouge 2017. It is like tasting wine from two different worlds, 2 worlds that I love. The SummaryThe Weed Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 drinks above its price tag, especially my sale price.I was unsure what to expect; if a brand wine is targeted toward you, you are in for a good wine at a good price. But you don't know if you are in their focus group until your first sip.I am glad this is not a cannabis-infused wine; my motto is one high at a time. The Cabernet Sauvignon showed me enough that I will be on the look-out for ..

“No matter what you're preparing for thanksgiving, the number one ingredient is love.”Lori Taylor    Thanksgiving looks a little different this year for all of us, but one thing remains important: enjoying a delicious meal with those you love and finding gratitude for all you have.   This American holiday is such an important one to slow down, reflect on what we can appreciate in life, and the only thing we're expected to do is gather around a table and enjoy an incredible meal! We've brought together twelve of our Produce Moms' favorite guests, friends and partners to share with you what exciting, new and standby recipes you can embrace this holiday. We've got recipes from all around the country, spanning from drinks, sides, dessert, palette cleansers and of course ways to bring your turkey to life. Enjoy some of these recipes this Thanksgiving or save them for another upcoming holiday dinner! “Everybody should try to put an eight ounce package of Baby Bella mushrooms in their green bean casserole.” - Brian Jenny, Vice President of Sales for Monterey Mushrooms (6:09-6:12)   Did you know that mushrooms are one of the fastest growing categories in the produce industry and just eight ounces will give you your daily recommended requirement of Vitamin D? Brian Jenny, Vice President of Sales for Monterey Mushrooms is passionate about these superfoods which are a delicious, healthy item that can be added to breakfast, lunch or dinner.    If you're making green bean casserole this year, add an eight ounce pack of baby bella mushrooms to your fresh green beans for more nutrients and flavor. When it comes to washing, lightly rinse them in a colander for 10-15 seconds or wipe them off with a damp rag. Try not to add any more water to them otherwise they might get soggy.    “One of our most popular recipes year after year is our turkey brine recipe.” - Don Helms, Vice President of Marketing at Shenandoah Growers (12:55-12:58)   That's Tasty is a Shenandoah Growers brand that is a must when purchasing items for your Thanksgiving meal. Without fresh herbs, would your turkey and dishes truly be a successful, delicious delight at the dinner table? Don Helms, Vice President of Marketing at Shenandoah Growers wants everyone to get the absolute most flavor of their food around the holidays. They call this time the “EKG chart” because of the 400% increase in demand they see around the holidays.   What are the staples Don says you need? Basil, sage, rosemary and thyme! One of That's Tasty's most popular recipes year after year is their turkey brine recipe. “The best way to do that is put all the flavor you can into it because it's such a blank canvas and it will absorb a lot of flavor,” says Don.   Their recipe is extremely easy and by allowing your turkey to marinate in the juices, the meat of the turkey will absorb those incredible flavors. His recipe includes salt, peppercorns, brown sugar, and That's Tasty garlic puree, organic bay leaves, fresh thyme, fresh sage and fresh rosemary leaves. Add some citrus to bring a tremendous amount of acid and make those flavors pop! “Potatoes during Thanksgiving are a nostalgic, must have dish!” - Eric Beck, Director of Marketing at Wada Farms (23:20-23:25)   If you think you're a fan of potatoes, you surely need to meet Eric Beck aka “Spud Love”. The Director of Marketing at Wada Farms in Idaho has earned this reputation around the industry and rightfully so. When asked about what type of potato to use in Thanksgiving mashed potatoes, he could've gone on for hours!   Eric suggests using a russet potato (which there are hundreds of different varieties of) if you want light and fluffy mashed potatoes. If you want a ruch and creamy consistency, use a yellow or red potato.    What's Eric's favorite way to enjoy mashed potatoes? His mother-in-law makes an incredible dish where she adds butter, sour cream, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and chives and mixes them altogether, rather than adding as a topping. Eric's also impressed with the amount of  culinary, artistic creativity happening with potatoes and the power of social media, which is allowing people to share and find new, interesting ways to prepare them.  “Fresh juice, especially  fresh squeezed juice… there's nothing else like it. To be able to incorporate that into some kind of holiday beverage is great.” - Kim Flores, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Pro Citrus Network (39:58-40:08)   Thanksgiving is Kim Flores, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Pro Citrus Network, absolute favorite holiday, hands down. Why? Kim loves the meaning of Thanksgiving, which is to share gratitude, spend time with family, and of course enjoy the food. It's a time when, no matter what, we get to reconnect with those that mean the most to us in life and enjoy the spirit of gratitude with those you love around you.    What's on Kim's Thanksgiving table? Turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, sweet potato pie and green bean casserole all are a must! Her three favorite dishes are her mom's sweet potato souffle made with fresh sweet potatoes and marshmallows on top, fresh cranberry pear crisp made with fresh pears, cranberries and oats on top, and her family's favorite, pumpkin roll.   Kim reminds us that citrus is such a versatile thing to incorporate in any meal. For example, one time her family cut oranges in half and put sweet potato souffle in the orange skin ‘bowl'. You can add oranges to cranberry relish, sangria, any cocktail or punch for Thanksgiving too! “It all of a sudden became an instant Thanksgiving tradition where people are asking if I'm bringing the delicata squash fries again.” - Mason Arnold, founder of Cece's Veggie Company  (43:42-43:48)   That makes two votes for delicata squash fries at the Thanksgiving table with Mason Arnold! Mason is the founder of Cece's Veggie Company, who makes the organic vegetable noodles, riced vegetables and veggie-based meal kits you've come to know and love.    Before starting Cece's, Mason used to run a grocery delivery company that partnered with local farmers in central Texas to slaughter fresh turkeys the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and deliver them to families the day before, giving them fresh, Heritage breed, never frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving. How delicious is that!?    Although Mason's mom loves cooking big, major meals, Mason contributes his healthy treats to the Thanksgiving dinner table too. Last year he brought delicata squash fries and they've become a major hit! Mason loves the delicious nutty flavor of delicatas and the texture they have when you roast them with the skin on, creating a crispy, crunchy outside.   “Everywhere I brought it, it got cleaned out way before the sweet potato dishes did,” Mason says. Try bringing the sweet potatoes some competition this year with delicata fries on your Thanksgiving table!   “Everyone has the cranberry ice, it's a core expectation.” - Megan Mitchell, Brand and Business Manager at Fielding Hills Winery (51:05-51:07)   Megan Mitchell is the Brand and Business Manager at Fielding Hills Winery, a winery that originally served as a red delicious apple orchard, until 2000 when the market for red delicious started to go down hill. That's when the orchard turned into a winery, planting 24 acres (now 30) of red wine grapes in the Columbia basin in Washington.    Megan suggests starting your Thanksgiving meal off with a bottle of white (she recommends their Roussan, aka “the red wine drinker's white”) and then moving into a bottle of red as dinner goes on. Her winery's bold, fruit forward Cab Sauv is the family's go-to.    You'd think wine would be Megan's favorite Thanksgiving treat (who wouldn't!), but instead, it's her great grandmother's recipe called cranberry ice. They use it as a palette cleanser between bites of turkey or after you've finished dinner and are waiting for dessert. You can make the cranberry ice yourself with cranberries, ginger ale, a fair amount of sugar, and ice to make the consistency of a sorbet.    “Everyone has the cranberry ice, it's a core expectation,” Megan says. “We've even made it for people who are friends or family members, but aren't in town, and send it to them!” “That onion and celery smell on Thanksgiving morning of starting your stuffing recipe... that's the start of the big day!” - Nicholl Towell Senior Director of Marketing at Duda Farm Fresh Foods (55:17-55:23)   “Everyone loves celery in their stuffing.”   You'll probably enjoy at least one of  the fresh, delicious vegetables that Duda Farms grows on Thanksgiving. Duda's the exceptional grower behind Dandy Brands celery, cauliflower, sweet corn, radishes and many other fresh produce items. Speaking of celery, we asked Nicholl why celery has those strings we love to hate in them and her response was so eloquent that you'll certainly have more respect for how this plant provides your body with nutrition!   The strings in celery are “like veins in your body. That's how nature feeds the plant and the veins are needed to feed itself or hydrate itself. If we took them out completely, we wouldn't have a plant,” shares Nicholl.    As much as Dandy is known for their celery (and who doesn't love celery in their stuffing), Nicholl's family is famous for enjoying her husband Ralph's cream style sweet corn at Thanksgiving. Ralph, a Florida native, brings a little of his southern style cooking to their family in California. It's one of the Thanksgiving dishes that goes fast and everyone loves. “The veggie I've been obsessed with these past several Thanksgivings is delicata squash” - Stefani Sassos, RN and Nutritionist with Good Housekeeping Institute (1:00:56-1:01:02)   We knew Stefani Sassos, RN and nutritionist with Good Housekeeping Institute would have a healthy, delicious favorite for Thanksgiving. Stefani has been obsessed with delicata squash because it's easier to cut than a butternut squash or other squashes for prep, and you can eat the skin of it, which is chock full of nutrients.   How does Stefani prepare her delicata squash for Thanksgiving (or any other family meal)? She chops it in half (length-wise) and scoops out the seeds to make little half moons. Next, Stefani adds a little olive oil, salt and pepper and has a trick if you have children. To get the squash to absorb wonderful flavors like rosemary and thyme without having little specks on the squash that can often be a “deal breaker” for kids, she'll just add a sprig of rosemary and thyme on the baking sheet instead. The flavors will naturally infuse into the squash and roasting brings out such a beautiful flavor.   Plus, it's a low calorie option that looks gorgeous alongside your Thanksgiving table spread!  “My two favorite dishes are the sweet potato casserole and our noodle kugel.” - Stefanie Katzman, Executive Vice President of S. Katzman Produce (1:08:28-1:08:33)   Stefanie Katzman of S. Katzman Produce is part of the fourth generation in the family-owned, New York City wholesale distributor. This is one of the busiest times of year for Stefanie and the rest of the team and it's important to note the role her company plays in delivering our Thanksgiving feast. “Everything that hits your Thanksgiving table is going to come through our market,” Stefanie reminds us.    She also loves Thanksgiving, which is the one guaranteed holiday her entire family celebrates together. Her favorite recipes? It's between the sweet potato casserole, which her family makes with pineapple, mandarin and maple syrup. An interesting twist on the timeless classic, the secret to the Katzman sweet potato casserole is adding marshmallows on top and sticking it back underneath the broiler to get that gooey, s'mores-like consistency.   Her family also makes two noodle kugels each year, one for dinner with spinach and one around dessert time with cheese, milk, cream, brown sugar and bread crumbs on top.  “Eat like an Italian!” - Tiffany Rose, founder of Wink Sprout (1:17:47-1:17:48)   Listening to Tiffany's accent you might wonder what she's doing on a podcast about Thanksgiving! Well, this Scottish-born, UK-raised, US transplant has happily taken on our American tradition of celebrating family and food. Tiffany recalls growing up in London where they “would only ever see Thanksgiving on Home Alone or American movies and wonder, ‘why do they have two Christmas dinners!?'”.   Now that she lives here, she truly understands what Thanksgiving is all about and enjoys the night before where you think about what you're going to eat the next day (and sneak double servings of).   Tiffany isn't a turkey fan, so she always roasts a chicken to go alongside American dishes like sweet potato casserole and green bean casserole. Tiffany is a huge proponent of eating healthy, just like we are at The Produce Moms, and she suggests something she learned from the Italians when working as a model and actress in Italy. They always eat a small, green salad before starting every meal! Tiffany suggests starting your dinner off this way because the fiber will help you get fuller fast and will aid in digesting the delicious carbs and sugary treats we love on Thanksgiving Day.  “We experimented and made stuffing with mango and jalapeno in it to add that unexpected spin.” - Tricia Bramley, Director of Marketing and Communications at National Mango Board (1:22:51-1:23:08)   You might be thinking, mangos and Thanksgiving don't mix, but did you know mangos are the most popular produce item in the world? Tricia Bramley, the Director of Marketing and Communications at the National Mango Board is working hard to help the US understand just how delicious and versatile mangos truly are!    Tricia loves to make the traditional foods her family has always enjoyed eating around Thanksgiving, and her family's tradition starts with a turkey noodle soup made by grandma for breakfast. Her mom's stuffing is legendary and a must have on her Thanksgiving table, but Tricia loves to add dishes that are unique and different to the traditional spread, too.    This year Tricia and the National Mango Board put together a stuffing made with mango and jalapeno that adds a touch of sweet, a dash of spice and an unexpected spin on a Thanksgiving favorite.    How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! The StoryThe Bear Bros Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is an ALDI $8.99 exclusive sourced from vineyards in California. That is about all the information on the production of this Cab that is available. And that is ok because this is a lockdown wine, if you take a chance and head out to ALDI is grab some provisions can you also pick up a decent wine to help make watching Netflix for the 3rd week a row more palatable. ALDI does not have the most attractively displayed wines around, but there are some wines that are well worth drinking. So what do we know or at least guess about the Bear Bros Cabernet Sauvignon 2017? First, a 9 buck store-brand wine is usually equivalent to an $11 or $12 wine at a retail wine shop. There are many variables with that assessment, but that is a ballpark guess. This Cabernet Sauvignon is a 2017 vintage, which gives this wine about two years of aging. That is respectable for a sub-$10 drink-it-now wine, they are frequently produced with methods that allow the wine to come together quickly. That is fine, but you do not want shortcuts and two years of aging is a proper length for this style of wine. The notes on the back label mention vanilla as part of the flavor profile and that is something that comes from some sort of oak aging. I would think that some if not all of this Cab Sauv some barrel aging. With a California Cabernet Sauvignon, we have come to expect oak flavoring in the wine, an un-oaked cabernet can seem a little weird.I do not know for certain, but the actual winery that produced this wine (Bear Bros is an ALDI name) is also responsible for several other ALDI wines that I thought delivered some decent bang-for-the_buck. So on to the tasting notes to see if my quick store run purchase was a wise one. The alcohol content is 13.5%.Bear Bros Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Tasting NotesThe color is cherry jelly red with black highlights. The nose ripe jammy red berries, extracted blackberry, mint, vanilla, light spice, and just a hint of dark chocolate. This 9 buck Cabernet Sauvignon has a medium body and chewy sweet tannins. It starts with blackberry, milk chocolate, tart cranberry, and black pepper. The mid-palate adds vanilla creme, plum, and soft spice. The aforementioned chewy tannins added some unexpected character, but do not interfere with the flavor profile. The acidity allows this cabernet to be bright and fresh.I am going to skip writing about a wines finish unless it just happens to be extraordinarily good. For the most part, I do not particularly care about what happens after I quit drinking the wine. If it is really good I am constantly taking another sip, so the finish rarely comes into play. The SummayThe Bear Bros Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a worthy lock-down Netflix binging wine.I tend to prefer the style of Cabernet Sauvignon that they make that sells closer to twenty dollars than ten dollars. The more complex winemaking production gives the wine a little more oomph, which I prefer in my Cabernet. But with that said, this is very drinkable wine that delivers beyond its modest price tag.

The StoryThe Technique Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a wine that sells for $6.99 at Trader Joe's. Is it a Trader Joe's exclusive? I don't know since this wine does not conform to the typical Trader Joe's exclusive wine brands. The Technique label is owned by the Precision Wine Company which has 9 different labels and specializes in Napa Valley wines. This bottling is not shown on their website, but there is a Technique Chardonnay from the Knights Valley AVA.The Alexander Valley AVA in Sonoma is about 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean but is a warmer climate growing region since it is blocked from the Ocean by mountains. The Russian River runs through the middle of the Alexander Valley and the river gives the AVA the cool mornings and the even cooler nights to offset the warm summer days. The Russian River AVA, which is known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, is south of Alexander Valley. The Alexander Valley is THE Sonoma AVA for Cabernet Sauvignon. The Precision Wine Company produces wines that sell in the $20 to $65 range and generally speaking Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon does not sell for $6.99. A typical Trader Joe's exclusive wine is contracted from a winery who along with Trader Joe's creates a dummy wine company and a unique wine label. The dummy wine company is used to hide the original source since Trader Joe's wines usually sell for less than the producing wineries line of wines. The details involving the production of the wine are hidden, to hide the original winery and to keep costs down. But with the Technique Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon we know who made the wine, cellared and bottled by does not mean too much, but we don't know why it is $6.99. Is this a wine they made especially for Trader Joe's and just didn't bother to hide the origin? Is this a Cabernet Sauvignon leftover from their wine club offerings? Is this a wine produced to sell for seven bucks or is it a wine that fits into the Precision Wine Companies portfolio and should list for $20 plus?Since Sonoma County Alexander Valley Sauvignon Cabernet doesn't sell for $6.99 in retail shops it probably does not fall into the first category, but what is what with this Cab Sauv remains a mystery. Maybe tasting will shed some light on just what is in the bottle. The alcohol content is 14.5%.The Tasting NotesThe color is a very nice shade of purple. The nose is subtle, the aromas are soft and integrated, there is ripe blackberry, black pepper, plum, oak spice, and a little vanilla. This is a balanced, dry Cabernet Sauvignon. It starts with blackberry, black licorice (Iknow licorice is supposed to be black, but I grew up on Twizzlers and they were red), black pepper, and soft, slightly sharp spice. The mid-palate brings raspberry, tart cranberry, none of these berries are super ripe and juicy, a little cream and a late slap of orange zest. The tannins are soft and sweet, you barely know they are there. The acidity is balanced and the finish is subtle and light but does linger. The Summary * If this were a twenty-dollar Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, I wouldn't be too impressed. It was nice to try, I liked it, but I would probably never revisit this wine at a later date. * But $6.99 makes all the difference. It has subtlety and balance that are rare in inexpensive Red wines. * So this is a Cab Sauv that is too good for 7 bucks and not so good for 20 dollars. But then again nobody but me mentioned $20 when talking about this wine so that comparison isn't fair. * But at $6.

Stick Figure Red Blend 2016

CheapWineFinder Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2019 8:14

The StoryThe Stick Figure Red Blend 2016 is a Trader Joe's $8.99 exclusive sourced from a selection of cool climate and warm weather vineyards in the Central Coast AVA of California. As per usual, Trader Joe's does not offer technical information for the Stick Figure Red, so let's see what we can figure out on our own. Trader Joe features a Pinot Noir in November to pair with turkey and according to the Fearless Flyer, this blend is intended to pair with baked ham. It is a fruit-forward, generously oaked (their description), that is moderately dry. This is the 2016 vintage which is a fair bit of bottle age (and oak barrel age, too?) for an $8.99 wine. Generally speaking a wine with plenty of oak and a fairly long aging period is made differently than your typical $8 to $10 red wines. Most sub-ten buck wines are made to come together quickly, they do do not need much aging by design, the Stick Figure Red does not seem to follow this profile. The packaging is excellent, the bottle has some weight to it and the label features drawings of the various types of grapevine pruning. Nothing about this bottle says cheap and inexpensive. We do not learn which grapes are in the blend and since the Central Coast does well with almost all of the popular grapes, guess will be nothing more than a guess. Though the Fearless Flyer write-up suggests Bordeaux grapes, Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petite Verdot, with maybe Petit Sirah and Zinfandel. One of the great things about value-priced Red blends is the winemaker can accentuate the positive with the grapes, the blend can offer greater rewards than the individual grapes could on their own. The alcohol content is 14.5%.The Tasting NotesThe color is dark, barely see-thru, cranberry red with black highlights. The nose is cherry, toasty oak vanilla, and spice (I would say this Red same some sort of extended oak conditioning), blackberry, molasses, licorice, light smoke, and baking spice. This is a medium to full-bodied wine, with bold flavors and a smooth mouth-feel. It tastes of black cherry, toasted vanilla, dark chocolate, black pepper, and ripe plum. The mid-palate is strong, there is blueberry, tart cranberry, exotic, slightly sharp spice, orange zest, and raspberry jam. The tannins are sweet and do not bite and the acidity allows the flavors to unfold. The finish starts off strong, fades before too long, but never completely fades away. The Summary * There is nothing about the Stick Figure Red Blend 2016 that says sub-$10 wine, from the packaging to what is in the bottle all hit higher than the $8.99 price tag. * Trader Joe's is positioning the Red to pair with a baked ham dinner and, yes, it can pair well, but I think this is more of any after the feast wine. More of a sit by the fire with family and friends Red wine, maybe talk about old times or watch the game. A nice, big, soothing Red blend to kick back and relax with. Check out the companion Podcast below

"If anyone orders a Merlot, I AM NOT **** DRINKING MERLOT." - Sideways (movie from 2004) Sideways the movie gave Merlot sales such a bad wrap for many years, but Merlot is a really a high-quality grape and wine throughout the world. At Kiepersol, we especially love our Merlot and what the East Texas Terrior expresses in our wine! Kiepersol Merlot is not as bold as Cab Sauv, but has very fruit-forward characteristics. This makes for a bottle of very delicious wine and it pairs so well with a nice dinner meal. Kiepersol Wines are made to be very comfortable wines and highlight fruit-forward characteristics. Since we've had such success with our Merlot, we've embraced it by taking our Kiepersol Bourbon Barrels, which aged Jimmy's Bourbon and started aging our Kiepersol Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in those barrels! This allows for the marriage between the Kiepersol Merlot and the bourbon soaked barrels which add flavor to the wine in a wonderful way. With the Holidays coming up, this wine pairs really well with those smokey meats and hearty meals. Come visit us or purchase this wine online: shop.kiepersol.com

The Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (Target) is a $9.99 Target exclusive sourced from vineyards in California. Target also offers their California Roots  line of $5.00 wines, which I thought were "ok" but not anything special. It is hard to be too critical of a decent five buck wine. Should we expect a wine twice as good for ten dollars? Target doesn't give a great deal of information on The Collection, so lets see what we can figure out from the bottle. The back label shows a winery from Manteca, California (Lodi), the winery name was created just for these particular wines. There is a large and very good, family owned vineyards and winery in Manteca, they have produced custom wines for Trader Joe's and I think, ALDIs. They also produce many retail wine labels on their own that are excellent value wines. I can't be completely sure that they produced The Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, but if they did that is a good sign. This is a 2016 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives a wine released in March of 2019 some decent bottle age. Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that takes some time to come together, you expect some sort of oak conditioning to be well-integrated into the flavor profile and the tannins to reasonably smooth. That takes some aging to complete and The Collection Cab doesn't skimp. The alcohol content is a very California, 14.5%. Tasting Notes The color is a dark, but still see-thru black cherry red. The nose is blackberries, a touch of herbs, a little spice, a little chocolate and a little vanilla. This wine has medium + body, with balanced flavors and decent structure. It tastes of blackberries, French vanilla, tart cranberry, and black pepper. The mid-palate adds a little Altoids spice, raspberry, and a touch of milk chocolate. The tannins do not bite, but provide solid structure, many value-priced Red wines try to hide their tannins, not here. The acidity is balanced, this can be a food wine, steaks on the grill anyone? The finish starts off strong, but is a little short. Summary * The Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is very competitive with Cabs in the value price category * Exclusive store brands have price advantages over regular retail wines, this $9.99 Cab Sauv is equal to Cabs in the $13 to $14 range * The Collection Cabernet Sauvignon is $9.99 and, yes, it is twice as good as the $5.00 Target California Roots Cab Sauvignon

Vineyard Riesling 2017 Hanna Sauvignon Blanc 2016 Paradise Ridge Pinot Noir 2017 Paradise Ridge Sauvignon Blanc Steve asks how the harvest is going. Jeff says you don’t really know until after it’s over. You can only look into the crystal ball so much, and you only know how well you’ve done afterwards. 2011 was the most difficult small harvest and 1989 was the most difficult ever. The weather has been perfect for ripening for the last week, but it was hot earlier. This has been an unpredictable year, with no consistency in terms of yield. So far they have been picking Sauvignon Blanc so far and it’s keeping him busy. Jeff found his way to UC Davis and worked as an enologist even if he had dreams of producing beer, not wine. He was a beer guy and went to school to become a brewer. His professor told him there was no future in microbreweries. He started at Christian Brothers in 1983 and discovered wine after he tasted a Dry Creek 1979 Sauvignon Blanc. After a while he met Chris Hanna, President of Hanna Winery, and he started a 20-plus year relationship. They are a small independent family-owned winery. Hanna was started in 1985. Chris’ dad is a retired heart surgeon. They are a small, nimble company that can react quickly to new ideas. Today they grow most of their own Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Dan says Hanna is a major producer in terms of quality, even with a smaller volume of production. They taste two Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blancs of 2017, from Hanna and Paradise Ridge. They won three gold medals for their Sauvignon Blanc at the Harvest Fair. Jeff refers to growing Sauvignon Blanc as “taming the green monster.” He grows his grapes in shade, which lets more aromas and flavors develop. He prefers to create the conditions that make his wine special in the vineyard, rather than in the winery. Rene Byck says they lost their 2017 Sauvignon Blanc in the fire, and this vintage is made from acquired grapes, not their own from the estate. They compare the flavors of both wines. They are tasting a Riesling. Steve detects pear in the nose, Dan Berger gets kiwi. Not floral, not honey. It has good minerality that holds the wine for a couple of years. He knows that in a couple of years those flavors will open up and it will be superb. Jeff says he has many vintages that are "really tightly wound" at first that benefit from some years of cellaring. This is a 2017 Riesling, and they have some grapes including some Riesling grapes that Jeff picked today. All they use to make their Sauvignon Blanc are the grapes. The Cab are the small grapes, the St. Vicaire are a rare Bordeaux variety. They will pick their Sauvignon Blanc on Friday. The red varieties, the Malbec, St. Vicaire and Cab Sauv are several weeks away from harvest. Dan says this Riesling is one that you could put away. Not all of them are like that but this one is. Last week he opened a 2002 Riesling from Michigan that was astounding! Rene Byck talks about a party being held on Sept. 22, a fund raising auction for the revival of the county after the fires. They end up tasting a Hanna 2015 Malbec with Alexander Valley fruit. Dan says this is also a polished wine, pure fruit, blueberries and chocolate. It's a very sophisticated wine, says Dan. Jeff notes that there is very little Malbec grown here and lots in Argentina. He went there to learn about it and everyone had a different secret. Malbec is easy to make, not easy to grow but it's forgiving to make.

Rosé is so popular now that the market is flooded. So the question now is not just do you want rosé, but what kind? How do you figure it out? There are some ways to choose the kind of pink for you! This podcast gives you heuristics to get a perfect bottle! Here are the show notes:    The four ways to make rosé: LIMITED SKIN MACERATION Crush the grapes Leave them in contact with the skins like a red wine   Soak them for a little while – like 2 hours to 2 days or so (red wines are weeks or months) Longer maceration, the darker the wine, the more tannin, the more red wine character   DIRECT PRESSING Similar to limited skin maceration, direct pressing -- contact with the skins for an extremely short period of time. No maceration, press and get skins away, make it like a white wine Some color in the juice, lightest rose of all   SAIGNÉE METHOD The saignée, or “bleeding,” method makes rosé AND red wine Started as a way to concentrate reds. Early in the maceration process, remove or “bleed” some of the juice from the tank. Vinified separately as a rosé   BLENDING White + red = rosé Prohibited for quality wines in Europe except Champagne Style varies from light to heavy depending on the amount and type of red wine used in the blend   Grapes/areas and flavors: French styles: Provence – salmon colored, Grenache lead with Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre: fruity, berry, cherry, with orange, saline, hay/dried grass or meadow, stony, floral, berry notes, bone dry, acidic, strawberry, fresh-cut watermelon, and rose petal, finishing with a distinctive, salty minerality on the palate Rhone: Tavel: only 100% rose appellation. Lots of structure and character – Grenache and Cinsault, 9 grapes authorized, ages well Sancerre, Burgundy, Alsace, Germany Pinot Noir: acidity and soft, subtle aromas of watermelon, raspberries, cherry, strawberries, and stream. Earthy, elegant, Bone dry Bandog from Provence: Mourvedre. Full bodied, richer, darker Loire: Cab Franc/Cab Sauv/Grolleau/Gamay Rose –  can be dark red, bone dry, floral, herbal   Spain: Tempranillo lead: Savory, heavy color – herbal, peppery, watermelon, strawberry, heavier, earthy, floral Basque Txakolina Rosado: berries, spritzy, salinity, low alcohol   Italy:   Red fruit, flowers/roses, citrus, savory AKA – Rosato, Cerasuolo, Ramato     New World: Syrah lead: bolder, more like a light red – strawberry, pepper, cherry, peach Cab Sauv: deep ruby red color with typical Cab notes: green bell pepper, cherry, black currant and black pepper White Zin: 85% of Zin production. Off-dry, sticky sweet. Carignan lead – common in CA: red berries, citrus Malbec: In Argentina Any combo possible, as well as sugar and blending white and red   Remember, it's ok to drink rosé once fall begins!    Thanks to our sponsor The Great Courses! www.thegreatcoursesplus.com/wine
