A new report says racist abuse is too often "tolerated or even normalised" in the English countryside, with many incidents going unreported by victims. Researchers from the University of Leicester spoke to 115 people and 20 community groups over two years, for their Rural Racism Project. They found that it wasn't just visitors to the countryside who suffered abuse, but those who are living within rural communities as well. The UK dairy sector has had a pretty successful year. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, which works with farmers and food producers on international trade, says that European demand for UK dairy exports reached a record 1.1 billion pounds in the first half of 2025, that's a 20 percent jump from last year. Exports to the USA and Asia also rose. How sustainable is this trend, especially with the impact of drought on dairy producers in some parts of the country? All this week we're looking at the business of livestock feed. What's grown to feed animals and how it's produced, can have a big impact on carbon emissions. Farmers are being encouraged to grow pulses to replace imported soya which can lead to deforestation. We visit a livestock farmer who's been trialling it as part of a nationwide project.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney
Are Untrained Letting Agents Damaging Our Industry? Too many letting agents are being “trained” by people who don't really know what they're doing, and it's causing real problems. In this interview, Nicol Nightingale, former Propertymark regional exec and now an asset manager in Leicester, shares her first hand experiences of unqualified agents passing on bad habits and misinformation. With over 170 pieces of legislation to navigate, the property industry isn't one where you can just pick things up as you go along. Nicol explains how even basic legal checks like Right to Rent are being mishandled, not out of laziness, but because no one ever showed agents the correct way to do it. She makes a strong case for mandatory qualifications and proper regulation, arguing that without it, the gap between good agents and bad ones will only get wider. Listen now, then jump into the comments, do you agree with Nicol? Is it time for real change?

What will remain of us hundreds of millions of years from now? And how can we be so certain that we are the first technologically advanced species on Earth? These unsettling questions have been haunting listener Steve. If fossils can be lost to deep time through erosion and subduction into the Earth's mantle, how would anyone — or anything — ever know that we had been here? And if an earlier species had built a civilization that rose and fell, would we even be able to find traces of it?To investigate, CrowdScience presenter Caroline Steel speaks to the scientists trying to answer these questions, while producer Sam Baker goes fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast in the UK. Caroline speaks with astrophysicist Adam Frank at the University of Rochester in the US, who along with NASA scientist Gavin Schmidt developed the Silurian hypothesis – the idea that if an advanced species had existed deep in Earth's past, they might have vanished without leaving a trace. But palaeontologists Jan Zalasiewicz and Sarah Gabbott from the University of Leicester in the UK argue that humans are already leaving an indelible mark in the form the chemical and material fingerprints we're pressing into Earth's crust. They contend that the ‘technofossils' we are producing will last a very long time indeed.Along the way, Caroline and producer Sam discover just how rare fossils really are, how even the tiniest particles of pollution will give us away to far-future explorers, and why car parks might be our ultimate legacy. What they find is at once unsettling and oddly comforting: humanity could be fleeting, but our impact probably won't be.Could we really have missed evidence of an ancient civilization? And what strange clues will we leave behind for whoever, or whatever, comes next? We explore Earth's geological memory to find out.Presenter: Caroline Steel Producer: Sam Baker Editor: Ben Motley(Photo: Old phone embedded in concrete layer with defocused landscape background Credit: Petra Richli Via Getty Images)

Today's rubbish may well be the fossils of tomorrow. Plastic bags, old pens, cheap clothing, or even chicken bones are all examples of possible “technofossils”, rapidly accumulating debris and detritus that may come to represent the story of humanity in the geological record long after we're gone. But it doesn't have to be this way. Host Dr Russell Moul speaks to Professors Sarah Gabbott and Jan Zalasiewicz of the University of Leicester, authors of Discarded: How Technofossils Will be Our Ultimate Legacy, about the fascinating processes involved in turning our trash into fossils, but also how interest in these processes may help us change them.

Ephesians 6:16 urges us to take up the shield of faith to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. But what does it really mean to raise that shield in the heat of spiritual battle? In this week's episode, Angie and Susie dive deep into what faith looks like when fear, insecurity, and doubt come rushing in. They unpack how our trust in God becomes a powerful defense against the enemy's lies, and why even mustard-seed faith is more than enough to hold our ground.Through word studies, commentary insights, and honest conversation, we explore how faith isn't just belief, it's surrender. And when we choose to believe God is who He says He is, we don't just deflect the enemy's attacks… we extinguish them.Ephesians 6:16 (NIV)In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.https://livesteadyon.com/https://susiecrosby.com/Free Resource: Armor of God Quick Reference GuideWant a simple, powerful way to keep the truths of Ephesians 6 close at hand? A chunk of the planet Mars - the largest ever found on Earth - recently sold for $4.3 million at Sotheby's auction house in New York City. A meteorite hunter first discovered the massive rock in the Sahara desert in Niger in 2023. So how did the meteorite end up at an auction in New York City and why would anyone pay millions of dollars for it? BBC reporter Damian Zane walks us through the rock's mysterious journey — from Mars to New York, via Niger and Italy. He also shares the concerns that Niger's government has about the sale and how Sotheby's has responded. We also hear from Julia Cartwright from the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester. She explains how the market surrounding meteorites can lead to even more discoveries. In this episode, we're joined by Nicol Nightingale, a seasoned letting agent in Leicester, to unpack what's really going on behind the headlines. Nicol shares her experience managing a large portfolio of electric only properties, why the current EPC system has been a long standing frustration, and how upcoming changes could turn everything on its head. Filmed in May 2025, this is your chance to get ahead of the curve before the rules change. Listen now and let us know what you think in the comments, are you ready for the EPC overhaul?

Send us a textIn this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Tim Van Hasselt, who is now a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Neonatal Subspeciality Registrar (fellow-equivalent) at the University of Leicester, UK.. Tim describes his training in the UK, his pathway to doing his PhD in investigating the impact of preterm birth on readmissions to the PICU. We talk about how he went about finding his mentor and how the project came about. He used two national databases and investigated his research question, where he ultimately found that the odds of unplanned admissions to PICU were greater in the most preterm and those with significant neonatal morbidity. With this data, he, along with his team were able to create infographics that could help educate parents of NICU graduates. (https://timms.le.ac.uk/preterm-birth-and-paediatric-intensive-care/)He also describes his experience interacting with parents who provided valuable feedback for the infographics and for his project. Dr Van Hasselt has successfully published his data in the Archives of Disease in Childhood. Dive deep into a mega-magmatic mineral system — the Bushveld Complex with host Maxwell Porter. Max is joined by Professor Wolfgang Maier and Dr. Erin Thompson who share their insights on the geological setting, economic significance, and evolving scientific understanding of this world-class mineral province.Wolfgang Maier discusses the Bushveld Complex's geological framework, its importance in today's resource landscape, and the controversies surrounding models for its genesis — and how these models have shifted over time. Wolfgang Maier completed his PhD on the Bushveld at Rhodes University, South Africa in 1992. He taught igneous petrology and economic geology at the Universities of Port Elizabeth, Pretoria (South Africa), Chicoutimi (Canada), UWA (Perth, Australia) and Oulu (Finland). He is now Professor for Ore Geology at Cardiff University, UK. Wolf's research deals with petrological and geochemical processes in mafic-ultramafic igneous systems that contribute to our understanding of continental magmatism, mantle evolution, plate tectonics and the formation of magmatic ore deposits including PGE, Ni-Cu, Cr, and V-Ti-Fe deposits. Erin Thompson shares what drew her to study the northern limb, why it holds both geological and economic importance, and how magmatic architecture and mineralisation controls shape exploration strategies. She explains the once-overlooked yet powerful tool of Niggli numbers, and how geochemistry and isotope studies inform exploration and the future of the Northern Limb. Dr Erin Thompson has recently completed her PhD at the University of Leicester, which focused on constraining the magmatic controls on Ni-Cu-PGE mineralisation in the world-class Platreef deposit, northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Her research was funded by Anglo American as part of the Northern Limb in 4D (NL4D) research consortium, which included researchers from across the UK at the University of Leicester, Cardiff University and Camborne School of Mines. She is now applying her background in magmatic processes and geochemistry in her new role as an exploration geologist.Theme music is Confluence by Eastwindseastwindsmusic.com

Today I had the privilege of sitting down with Chinazom Nwabueze, a Nigerian-born performance psychologist whose journey from Lagos to London to the US reads like a masterclass in resilience and reinvention. We traced his remarkable path from those brutal boarding school days in eastern Nigeria—where he learned survival skills that would serve him for life—through his economics studies at Leicester, a successful banking career, and his bold pivot into performance psychology at 39. What struck me most was Chinazom's raw honesty about that pivotal moment when he looked in the mirror and refused to let fear of failure trap him in a career that was slowly killing his spirit. His insights on men's mental fitness are profound, particularly his concept of "real talk"—both with ourselves and others—and how most of us reach our forties having mastered spreadsheets but knowing nothing about our own inner workings. The conversation kept circling back to self-love under pressure, which Chinazom identified as the deceptively simple answer to the complicated question of high performance. His hiking group of Nigerian men and the transformative power of "banter" reminded me that healing happens in community, not isolation. Sometimes the most radical act isn't positive thinking—it's simply getting curious about what we're actually grateful for when life feels overwhelming.Bio:Chinazom (pronounced 'Chee-Nah-Zuhm') Nwabueze is a strategic and innovative C-level coach, consultant, advisor, trainer and facilitator, Chinazom delivers solutions at the intersection of business, people, and coaching strategy. As the founder of Dreamcatchers Performance LLC, he has dedicated his career to integrating high performance with mental fitness to unlock resilience, adaptability, innovation and sustained change. Through deep discovery, Chinazom creates innovative solutions that bridge the gap between business transformation and human capital, driving business outcomes, breakthrough performance, and best-in-class working environments.

Are Tenancy Agreements Still Being Written on the Back of a Packet? In this candid interview, Leicester letting agent Nicol Nightingale calls out a major flaw in the UK rental sector, the complete lack of a standard, legally required tenancy agreement format. If you've ever had to deal with a handwritten or outdated agreement, you'll know exactly what she's talking about... Nicol doesn't hold back as she explains why it's unacceptable for landlords to cobble together legally binding documents without any formal training or professional oversight. While estate agents are expected to meet professional standards, landlords are still free to use decades old templates pulled from the internet. This isn't just frustrating, it's risky, for tenants and professionals alike. Nicol makes a strong case for why the government should mandate qualified individuals to draft tenancy agreements, and why this would actually protect everyone involved. Listen now and let us know, do you agree with Nicol's take? Leave a comment and join the conversation.

Leicester win and Leicester lose. Knocked out of the cup on penalties by Huddersfield but, and most importantly, beating Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday. Pete, James & Sam discuss City's start, who needs to play (winks) and in a quick fire style, who stays and who goes.
Jerry Douglas is never not entertaining. On stage, on record, or in conversation, Flux, as Bela Fleck famously dubbed him, is full of wit, joy and inventiveness. His talents have garnered him 16 Grammy Awards, 28 IBMA Awards, 3 Country Music Association Awards, 3 Americana Music Association Awards, an NEA National Heritage Fellowship, and an artist residency at the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Museum. I heard once that his style playing Dobro was so popular that practically every other player emulated it, to the point that he had to reinvent his own style to distinguish himself from the rest of the pack. This story could very well be apocryphal, but it points to the fact that his influence is everywhere in bluegrass and bluegrass-adjacent acoustic music. And Jerry Douglas has stories. Ask him about anyone in bluegrass, or even a ton of artists outside the genre, and chances are that he knows them and can spin a yarn or two about playing with them or being in their orbit. Get him going, and he may even tell you about his ancestor David Douglas, of Douglas fir fame, and the spectacular and mysterious way he met his end in Hawaii. Here, we bring Jerry Douglas back to Southern Songs and Stories for a second time, following his 2021 episode “It's Always Roots Music 12 O'Clock With Jerry Douglas”. Since then, Jerry has been inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Fame; he has served as festival host and solo performer as well as in his tribute band The Earls Of Leicester for the Earl Scruggs Music Festival, with frequent guest appearances for a number of other artists and bands there; he also fell right back in with Alison Krauss & Union Station for their first album since 2011, Arcadia. Jerry Douglas will be the host once again at the Earl Scruggs Music Festival in late August 2025, where he will perform with the Earls of Leicester as well as Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and who knows how many artists as their on stage guest. Recently, he spoke with me on a video call while on tour with AKUS, where he gives us a preview of Scruggs Fest, plus he details a lot of what went into Arcadia. We also find out what he believes is the best key for playing bluegrass music, and learn how he approaches his instrument in Union Station differently than on his own.
