Children's Bureau is one of the largest private, non-profit adoption agencies in California and one of the few that is nationally accredited by the Child Welfare League of America. In Los Angeles County alone, the foster care population exceeds 33,000 children with 200 of those foster children waiting for an adoptive family. If you or someone you know may be interested in learning more, join us on November 17th from 4:00 – 5:00 P.M. for an online virtual orientation. A link to the meeting will be emailed to you. Children's Bureau partners with over 200 foster-adoptive families annually to help at-risk youth by giving them a home that is nearby and inclusive to their foster siblings. Lisa and Michael began their foster-adoptive journey by providing a stable home to a sibling set of three, two girls and a boy. They worked to keep the family together and have experienced a bond like no other. “If adoption is in your future, there is no need to look any further than our surrounding county. So many local children need a family. If you are wanting to “make a difference” with your life, consider adopting from foster care. You could be saving generations,” said Lisa. In the 1940's, Children's Bureau opened adoption services and found homes for refugee children orphans from World War II. The agency continues to meet the needs by offering a wide array of programs in areas related to adoption such as foster care, prevention, and mental health. Children's Bureau has multiple locations operating throughout Southern California. “Right now children who have experienced trauma and have been separated from their birth family need our help,” says Leslie Oropeza, Children's Bureau Director of Foster Care and Adoption. “We are looking for families who can open their homes and hearts to these children. Families who have extra space and the willingness to keep them together. Statistics show siblings kept together in foster care and adoption do better later in life. They heal quicker from their trauma, have better attachments, and develop healthy self-images,” she adds. Children's Bureau welcomes all individuals regardless of race, age, religion, disability, marital status, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression to become a resource for children. Qualifying families receive training and support throughout their journey. Foster Care and Adoption Programs are available in Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. Over the last several years, we've become more and more aware of the challenges and—let's face it—the inadequacies of the child welfare system. Disproportionality is real—the way in which families of color can be caught up in the system at rates that truly boggle the mind. And how about worker shortages, which are also real and tax those still on the front line. More than ever, child protective services has become the system of last resort for families failed by every other system. But what are we going to do about it? How do we address racial inequities within the system? How do we add youth voices and those with lived experience in a meaningful way into program planning? And how do we learn from the data what works and eliminate practices that clearly don't? We spoke with Christine James-Brown from the Child Welfare League of America about how we might reform and reimagine the child welfare system.Topics in this episode:Origin story (1:51)The problem with child welfare (3:07)Where to start (12:16)Neglect (16:52)Rebuild the system (19:05)Interesting strategies (24:56)Build trust (31:25)Child welfare workers (35:24)For more information (39:20)Links:Christine James-Brown, president and CEO, Child Welfare League of America, Inc.SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance ProgramBowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, by Robert D. Last month a Senior Fellow from the Child Welfare League of America, Paul DiLorenzo, wrote this response to a Farrah Mina article in The Imprint about interviewing children in front of their alleged abusers. For the first time that we know of, a child welfare opinion piece has challenged the decades-old Progressive oversimplification that child protection workers are typically racist and that child removals from their families are often unnecessary. Why respond after all this time? Join Rich for a full discussion and analysis on this in this week's podcast. =========== Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota's nonprofit mission is to strengthen the Minnesota child welfare system so children are safe and can reach their full potential. On January 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol seeking to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. While our attention has been consumed with things like the pandemic, vaccines, and America's withdrawal from Afghanistan, Scott MacFarlane reminds us that the investigations into the events of that day—and the prosecutions of those responsible—are just beginning. MacFarlane is an investigative reporter with the News4 I-Team and joined NBC after almost a decade of work as a Capitol Hill reporter for the Cox Media Group. He began his career as a reporter for CBS TV affiliates in Detroit, Cleveland, Grand Rapids and Syracuse. MacFarlane also once served as a congressional staffer in the U.S. House of Representatives. His work has led to the creation of five state laws, triggered federal prosecutions, and has been referenced in more than a dozen formal congressional hearings and floor speeches. MacFarlane has interviewed U.S. presidents, dozens of U.S. senators, governors and a Supreme Court justice, and he's questioned press secretaries in the White House press briefing room. He is the recipient of several awards for his work on behalf of children's safety. He won the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism from the Child Welfare League of America in 2018. His series of investigations on public school security has yielded several honors from the Associated Press and a series of Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards. His reporting on thoroughbred horse racing deaths in West Virginia triggered a series of new safety state regulations for the sport and earned an award from the Humane Society of the U.S. His series of investigations on the U.S. State Department was honored in 2020 by the National Press Club. MacFarlane's investigations of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs inspired a congressional review by the U.S. House Oversight Committee, which played and cited his news reports in a June 2019 hearing. Jayne Amelia interviews former foster youth, Venus Manuel, a shining example of how nurture does not always triumph over nature. From an early childhood rampant with sexual and physical abuse followed by a string of nine foster care homes, the development of another disillusioned dysfunctional youth seemed tragically imminent. However, the strength, passion and individuality inherent in Venus provided her with the abilities to not only rise above her beginnings, but stand as a true pillar of society. After graduating from Palmdale High School in 1996, Venus was emancipated from foster care and rapidly found herself in a state of destitution. Quickly responding to her circumstances, she forged an opportunity with the US Air Force and served an eight-year commitment to her country as a combat photographer. Those eight years were incredibly fruitful. Venus Manuel accomplished what most people would not be able to do with twice the time. The main bulk of her energy was directed towards bettering the lives of transitional foster care youth. As a motivational speaker requested by organizations such as the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Child Welfare League of America and America Works, Venus has raised over half a million dollars specifically for disenfranchised youth, and continues to fight for the welfare of foster care youth. At the same time, and carrying with her the platform “The Successful Transition of Foster Youth” at age 21, she began competing in and winning high profile beauty pageants. Her titles include Miss High Desert 2000, Miss Central California 2001, Miss Los Angeles County 2002, Miss Black California 2003, and Miss Black United States 2004. Venus has also won the Miss America Interview and Community Service Award, and was chosen as one of Glamour magazine’s “Top Ten College Women in America.” Venus has an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts from Antelope Valley College and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from California State University Dominguez Hills where she graduated in the top 10% of her class and was nominated by her peers as Outstanding Graduate. She has a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Master’s degree in Counseling Education. She was also invited by the late director Penny Marshall and producer Kenadie Cobbin to be the opening act of their immensely popular Vagina Monologues at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Venus is married with two children. After the birth of her son she took up pole dancing as a hobby that turned into a 12-year passion of movement exploration, performing, teaching (women, men, and LGBTQ) and competing all over the world in Vertical Theater. She is also an Independent Living Coordinator with the Los Angeles County Probation Department continuing her work with foster youth and says, “I will continue to champion this cause by being a voice for those too afraid to speak and for those who are not being heard.”Venus Manuel - Pole Theatre USA 2017 Semi-Pro Pole Drama Championhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbXOn9c9s54National Juvenile Justice Networkhttp://www.njjn.org/our-work/juvenile-justice-reform-advances-california?phpMyAdmin=14730ab3483c51c94ca868bccffa06efNational Center Youth Lawhttps://youthlaw.org/publication/legislative-push-juvenile-justice-reform-california/CA Division of Juvenile Justicehttps://www.cdcr.ca.gov/juvenile-justice/

| Today’s we’ll be speaking with George Miller My name is George Miller; I am a Child Advocacy Artist. I have devoted the past 20 years of my life to creating artwork that advocates for the education and well-being of children. All my artwork is hand drawn and hand painted. I am a self-taught artist. I have been commissioned to create works of art by numerous child advocacy organizations across the country. The Child Welfare League of America, The National Youth at Risk Association, The American Association of School Social Workers, The Federation of Families, The Utah Comprehensive Counseling Association, The Florida Coalition for Children and the Florida Network of Child Advocacy Centers to name a few. Almost every piece of artwork on this website has been commissioned by an agency or organization working in support of children. I love to create artwork that is meaningful and helpful. My artwork addresses issues such as literacy, dropout prevention, child abuse prevention, mental health and autism. I wish to inspire teachers, social workers, parents and grandparents, mentors and politicians. If a piece of my artwork encourages someone to share even one extra moment with a child that otherwise may have been overlooked, then my artwork has served its purpose. I hope that other artists around the country will be inspired to use their talents to help people. Positive visual images help us to become tolerant of other people and conditions we don’t quite understand. They provide a unique opportunity for us to see what could and often should be. Visual images inspire people into action and help us to remember what our hearts already know. Allow me to paint a picture for you of a world where artist of all mediums create works of art that address the issues that plague our society. Giant, bright and colorful murals adorn all our nation’s cities, encouraging unity and diversity. Our buildings are adorned in murals that salute our educators, doctors and nurses, police and firemen, social workers and psychologists. Schools and Universities are filled with art that inspires the spirit of learning. Statues around all major cities give hope to the homeless, raise the spirits of the poor and foster environments of love and peace. As an artist I feel I have the power to change the world! If you are an artist consider creating a work of art that helps lift the spirit of a child or encourages those who work tirelessly to advocate for our children. www.gemartstudio.com This show is sponsored in part by: Learning Ally: www.learningally.org Impact Dyslexia: www.Impactdyslexia.org 3 Dudes Design: https://3dudesdesign.com/ Learning Ally Demo https://learningally.org/Solutions-for-School/Schedule-Demo Texas Education Association Partnership https://learningally.org/Solutions-for-School/school-grants/Texas Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Empowerdyslexia)

For generations, American politicians have promised reducing—or even eliminating—poverty as one of their goals. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson went so far as to declare an “unconditional war” on poverty. Lenette Azzi-Lessing warns, however, that the rhetoric of fighting poverty has become a war on the poor with devastating consequences for America’s most vulnerable children. Azzi-Lessing is Clinical Professor of Social Work at Boston University and author of “Behind from the Start: How America’s War on the Poor is Harming Our Most Vulnerable Children.” She founded the nationally recognized Rhode Island Center for Children At-Risk, now named Children’s Friend, in 1989 to address the social service and behavioral health needs of highly vulnerable young children and their families. Azzi-Lessing is a member of the Child Welfare League of America’s National Joint Commission, she has co-chaired the League’s Committee on Prevention, Protection, and Family Preservation, and has been an expert witness in federal court on behalf of children abused and neglected in the child protective system. In 2017, Azzi-Lessing was named a Fulbright Specialist focused on higher education and training in nations across the globe. She also helped develop Graduate Certificate Programs in Early Childhood Development and Family Support in South Africa with colleagues from the University of Fort Hare, East London, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

EPISODE 34: HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR AUTISM With guest State Lobbyist Bart Baldwin INTRODUCTION: Hi, everyone! Thanks for joining me today. Bart Baldwin is joining us today. He has over two decades of experience in public policy, lobbying and executive level management in the health care and human services fields, and he’s going to provide some insight for us on public policy decisions, state funding, and how he is providing support to those in the autism community. It’s not the most fun topic, I know, but his experience, I believe, will open your eyes. And as always, if you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us wherever you listen to podcasts, and share with a friend. That’s how we make our voice stronger. Thanks for listening! SEGMENT: As we all know far too well, at least for our listeners in the United States, health insurance can be really complicated. Many of us have spent so many hours trying to connect the dots with insurance coverage; it is absolutely so stressful, and I personally have cried so many times to strangers on the other end of the phone just trying to make sense of it all. The insurance landscape has changed drastically over the years, and the good news is (as hard as it may seem some days), we have made some progress. As an example, at least 200 million people now have health insurance coverage for ABA because of the tireless efforts and dedication of advocates across the country. One of these advocates is Bart Baldwin. He is a long-time state lobbyist in the state of Kentucky, and his efforts and advocacy have protected the rights, services, and supports of our autism community. Previously, Bart served as the President of the Children’s Alliance, representing child welfare agencies in Kentucky, and was also the National Director of Regional Public Policy for the Washington D.C. based Child Welfare League of America. Again, I understand this is not the most interesting or fun topic (Bart’s gonna love this lead-in), but I can assure you, in my conversations with Bart, he has opened my eyes to just how much hard work is being done behind the scenes that most of us are completely unaware of. Let’s welcome Bart Baldwin. CONCLUSION: I’ve had many people reach out to me to ask “which health insurance provides the best coverage”? Whew! There are so many things that can affect coverage based on the specific type of insurance your employer carries, to what state you live in, and the list literally goes on and on. Just know there are people there that can assist you in the navigation of it all, AND they are fighting to protect your family. I always say, “Keep the hustle”, and don’t take “no” for an answer. Progress has been made because of the people that didn’t stop, that didn’t accept no as an answer. We’re all in it together! Thanks for being a part of My Autism Tribe, I’ll see ya next week!
