Stressful situations are a part of life, but doing nothing about it or using the wrong coping techniques could diminish our mental health. Without the right mindset and practices, we may find ourselves struggling with anxiety and other mental health challenges. My guest today, Dr. Caroline Leaf, emphasizes that it's not the stressful situations we face that are important but rather our reactions to them. She'll share insights into the root causes of our responses and techniques to foster healthy and lasting changes in our lives. Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist, audiologist, clinical and research neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in psychoneurobiology and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. In our conversation, Caroline explains why you have more power over our minds than you realize. She presents science-backed concepts and strategies to help you handle stressful, toxic, and intrusive thoughts, transforming them into positive thoughts that can lead to personal growth, self-awareness, and enriching experiences.

Still buzzing from getting to host Dr. Caroline Leaf on my podcast this week, and such an important, life-saving topic… mental health + our children. Dr. Leaf needs no introduction, but for the record - she is a communication pathologist, audiologist, clinical and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. Basically, when Dr. Leaf talks, we better be listening! It's not an easy truth to face, but according to Dr. Leaf and research, children are now worse off than adults regarding mental health. “The mental health crisis that we are sitting with now is actually a symptom of something much larger - and that much larger crisis is one I believe of mind management,” says Dr. Leaf. Dr. Leaf discusses everything from helping parents to help with our child mental health crisis, to the immune system of our minds. We discuss a shift from a more holistic approach over the decades to one of diagnosis, labeling, and suppression, and how diagnosis versus description masks resilience. “No child is trying to be difficult. They're trying to process life.” -Dr. Caroline Leaf. We also discuss neurocycles and Dr. Leaf's new book, Mentally Resilient Kids. “Your brain is always changing, your body is always changing, your mind is always changing because you are always changing… because life is always changing.” Well said, Dr. Leaf! Thanks listeners for your faithfulness in tuning in, rating, and sharing about Soul Purpose Leadership. It's because of YOU that we get to host renowned guests like Dr. Caroline Leaf! Dr. Caroline Leaf discusses the difference between the mind and the brain, shedding light on a commonly misunderstood concept regarding the difference between them: that the brain is a physical substrate, while the mind is the activator of the brain. The mind is our aliveness, our life force, that enables us to think, feel, and choose. Dr. Leaf also shares her insights on how to optimise the mind-body-spirit connection and provides practical tools for managing mental health and rewiring the brain. KEY TAKEAWAYS The mind and the brain are not the same thing. The brain is a physical substrate, while the mind is the activator of the brain. The mind is present in every cell of our body, not just in the head. It extends beyond our physical body and interacts with the environment. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety are not brain diseases or chemical imbalances. They are signals from the non-conscious mind that something needs attention and processing. We can rewire our brain and optimise our functioning through intentional and deliberate practices, such as the five-step process of the Neurocycle, which involves deconstructing and reconstructing thoughts and behaviours. Medication may provide temporary relief but does not address the root cause of mental health issues. BEST MOMENTS "Your brain is literally a physical substrate, very complex, obviously, it's often compared to a computer, but it's way more complex than a computer." "If we date our brain is disintegrating, our body's disintegrating, nothing's happening, that's logical. But we're alive and having this conversation and your viewers and your listeners are able to process and respond and think and feel and choose about this information that we're sharing. And that is because of their mind." "So our mind is our aliveness that activates the brain, and the brain and the body collectively together respond to the mind." "The subconscious is like a doorway or a portal between the conscious mind and the non-conscious mind. So when we go to sleep, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind pretty much go to sleep as well. And the brain goes into an unconscious state, but the non-conscious is still functioning, which is why we have dreams and why we do process stuff." In this episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Carolyn Leaf, who shared invaluable insights on how to support children in managing their mental well-being. The show highlighted the pressing issue of childhood suicide, which has reached epidemic proportions, with rates surpassing those of adults. Dr. Carolyn emphasized the importance of teaching children how to understand and handle their emotions effectively. She pointed out that negative emotions are temporary and not a permanent state. Using a powerful analogy, she likened children to pilots flying a plane without being taught how to navigate, land, or manage it properly. Parents play a vital role in guiding their children through emotional challenges. It is crucial to educate them about their emotions, equipping them with the tools to navigate through the complexities of our modern world, including the impact of social media and its potential to trigger negative emotions, depression, and self-loathing. During the episode, Dr. Carolyn introduced the concept of the "neuro cycle," which involves guiding children through the process of addressing and resolving negative feelings effectively. The show proved to be a treasure trove of valuable information and strategies for parents and guardians seeking to help their children develop emotional resilience and well-being in today's challenging environment. On today's podcast, you will learn: The alarming rise in childhood suicide rates, surpassing those of adults. How children are not being taught how to manage their emotions. The role of our current society, including social media on children's mental well-being. Valuable strategies and advice to help children develop emotional resilience. When it comes to the big questions about what lives inside that scone of ours, this conversation with Dr. Caroline Leaf could very well be my all-time favourite! Exploring what lives at the intersection of mind, body and brain is a hell of a curious corner of the world to rummage around in. There's neuroscience, physiology and medicine. There's energy, spirituality and belief. And pending who you speak to, there are all shades of grey in-between. Among a long list of credentials, Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. I throw some curly questions her way, seeking clarity around what and where is the mind and what is the nature of it's relationship with the brain? When we refer to 'I' where is that part of me and where does my identity live. Because if I have a brain and I have a mind... where is the I? Dr. Leaf speaks with such clarity and simplicity around an incredibly complex topic... Making it digestible, applicable and easy to implement. I hope you love it too. REBROADCAST: This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm excited to talk with Dr. Caroline Leaf about her new book Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess. She is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and Ph.D. in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s, she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. Dr. Leaf is also the bestselling author of Switch on Your Brain, Think Learn Succeed, Think and Eat Yourself Smart, and many more. She teaches at academic, medical, and neuroscience conferences, churches, and to various audiences around the world. Dr. Leaf is also involved in the global ECHO movement, which trains physicians worldwide on the mind-brain-body connection, mental health, and how to avoid physician burnout. Dr. Leaf is currently conducting clinical trials using the 5-step program she developed while in private practice to further demonstrate the effectiveness of mind-directed techniques to help relieve mental ill-health problems such as anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts. The primary aim of these trials is to make mental health care more affordable, applicable, and accessible worldwide, and to reduce the stigma around mental health. Key Points from Our Conversation: The benefit we get from exercise is determined by our minds. The book was inspired by the research Dr. Leaf did to determine what can actually change when we renew our minds, as well as how that impacts the brain, body, and how we function in life. Mind and brain are separate. Your brain is physical; your mind is your thinking, feeling, and choosing. Your mind produces thoughts in your brain. A neurocycle helps allow you to track thoughts and behaviors. Once we connect with wisdom, we can better observe our behavior and then analyze it. Like a tree has branches, thoughts have memories. If you want to find the root, look for warning signals like frustration, irritation, depression, and anger. Don't push them aside – inspect them. Suppressing warning signals causes physical damage to the brain. Analyze your physical symptoms like stomach problems, tension, and rushing adrenaline. Also, check behaviors like non-verbal communication. Mental health is not a disease. The label is leading is mismanagement of health. Misery has become medicalized and treatment is typically symptom-focused, which is great for the body, but not the mind. The quick-fix mentality of symptom treatment has led to suppression. We are wired for love. Negative thoughts physically vibrate incorrectly in the brain and cause inflammation that affects the immune system and how we function. Jesus modeled pushing through and digging into the difficult. There is not a quick fix. The only way out is through. Embrace, process, and reconceptualize. Don't be scared of depression and anxiety. Instead, see them as helpful messengers. Renewing your mind is a lifestyle. Switch - 21-Day Brain Detox App Dr. Leaf's 5 Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking: Gather awareness - become aware of emotional and physical warning signals Reflect - ask, answer, and discuss. Get to the core. Write it down. It helps you get into the depths of why you think this, what you're doing, and how you feel. Recheck Activate mental reach - bringing order out of the chaos Let's Get Real Practical: Let's get practical by addressing one area of your life that you know God is calling you to take your thoughts captive. Action steps for this week: Identify what area of your life in which you feel stuck. Ask if your thinking in that area is toxic. Then write down the thought and replace it with the truth. Welcome Back Coachable Fam! You are in for a treat today! Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input.[5:00] Brain Vs Mind“The Mind is us, a likeness or a humanness, being able to think, feel, and choose all the experiences of life.”“The mind is like gravitational fields. It can't be seen, but we know it's there, because of the evidence, which is that we are not floating.”“The brain is a physical part. The thoughts come in the mind, which makes the experience into a physical thought.”[15:41] Power of Choice“The non-conscious mind is the biggest part of who you are. It's the most intelligent part of who you are.”“You can never change your story of what happened in childhood, adolescence, early adulthood and whatever stage of your life, because your stories happened. But what you can do is change what it looks like inside of you. And then therefore you can change how it plays out into the future.”“We spend way too much time ignoring the cause. And then once we do face the course, we then try and spend a lot of time trying to find why someone did that?”[25:08] Subconscious“The Subconscious is the bridge”“No emotions are bad, and no emotion should be suppressed because they are incredible messages.”“The non-conscious sends signals through the subconscious, into the conscious mind. So depression, that's an emotion. It's one of four signals, not an illness. It's a warning signal, embrace it.”“Energy is never lost. It's transferred. So as I did this, I'm starting to build a little replacement thought.”[34:00] Neurocycle“It's a systematic ordered mind management system that drives the neuroplasticity of your brain, therefore changing right down to the level of your DNA of every cell of your body.”“It's an embraced process to reconceptualize over time, to break these established patterns.”“It's not a mental health pandemic. It is a mismanagement of the mind. That's the real issue. We've got to reteach people how to manage their minds.”Connect With Dr.Caroline:drleaf.comhttps://www.instagram.com/drcarolineleaf/Be confident that you're getting all your necessary nutrients! The brain is not the mind. You are not your brain. You are your mind and you use your brain and that's a very distinctive difference.5:27 Your mind, on a psychological level, can be understood as how you think, feel and choose. Those three go together. You can't think without feeling. You can't think and feel without choosing. 7:11 So in other words, it's agency. So this, you choosing is you with your wise mind having agency over your decisions, over how you think, how you feel and how you choose. And that agency is something that we need to be empowered to develop and understand. And if you don't understand this connection, you kind of just bamboozle through life, sometimes making a mess and sometimes fixing up the mess, and lot of times, staying in the mess. And the messier you are, the more extreme the state becomes. And then you end up with quite extreme mental health challenges, like severe depression and all the things that go along with that.9:04 So mind-brain-body is kind of all of this and we can actually, with our mind, look at our behaviors, look at our emotions and everything, look at the signals, become thought detectors and deconstruct down to this, and find this thought and all its memories and be constructed and reconstructed.10:15 The first thing is to accept that mess is inevitable and mess is okay. So that's the first thing: you're human, you're alive, you're a mess. And that's just part of it. And it's actually normal.10:37 In other words life, life is just circumstances and events that are not things that we can control. So the only thing we actually have agency over is our reactions to the uncertainties of life.11:41 We've got to stop beating ourselves up about being messy. It is so part of our psycho neurobiology. We are wired and designed, whatever you want to say, for mess.11:52 The messiness is part of this experimentation that our mind/brain/body's doing all the time. What we're meant to do is observe how we are doing it. We're meant to stand back and self-regulate, so there's self-regulation is the second part of the answer. The first part is that it's okay to be a mess...And the second part is self-regulation.14:02 You know, so it's become about this, there's something wrong with you at your core and you're not supposed to be a mess. Actually, that's completely wrong. You are supposed to be a mess. That's how you can grow, repair, and grow. You cannot grow if you cannot repair. And if you don't miss, you can't repeat. You have to miss, to repeat, to grow. And that's the philosophy that helps mental health. 24:51 But if your brain and body are not functioning well, if they physically, the material, the substance is not healthy, then that's going to impact how well your mind can actually use your brain and your body, because your mind uses your brain and your body. And so that's why nutrition is important. 26:05 Nutrition for your brain is important. If you're going to put a lot of processed chemicals in your brain, you are going to have a problem. 26:56 The nervous system in the gut is made from the same material as the brain, [they] come from the same fetal tissue. It has as many neurons. There are many neurons in the gut as there are in the spinal cord, and even a few more.27:38 Everything in your body is vulnerable to toxic thoughts, and to life, everything in your body's vulnerable to life. Therefore if you, cumulatively over time, are living a very unmanaged life, your body is weakening daily and increasing your vulnerability to disease. So over time, the vulnerability is there, so that's why mind management is an absolutely critical factor when it comes to day-to-day living. 28:56 So we see over time, stress that is not dealt with, toxic stress, in other words, stress that has an effect, stuff that's not dealt with, will put you into a chronic state of toxic stress and toxic stress manifests with all these signals32:57 We see that the brain and body are literally wired for love and where we regulate our mind. If you're operating in love, we actually drive a healthy regulation on our mind. And when you have a healthy, a person who's managing their mess in this love way, they become a human that's contributing to society in a healthy, loving way. And it's core to humanity. Instead of feeling ashamed of your symptoms, Dr. Caroline Leaf recommends you become a “though detector.” Find out what's led you to feel the way you do, be gentle with yourself, and be patient in the process of rewiring your brain. We might sometimes think that the pursuit of wisdom is a purely intellectual objective, but in reality it's so much more. Wisdom transcends knowledge. It's a level of understanding which cannot be put into words, a connection between your heart, your soul, and the universe all around you. Achieving that state takes dedication to yourself and your goals, through a process that Dr. Caroline Leaf calls 'mind management.' She's spent years teaching people to awaken a sense of mindfulness in everything they do, across every aspect of their lives, and allow it to empower their actions for maximum benefit. Whether you're meditating, working out or just getting a bite to eat, presence of mind will unlock the power of your inner potential. This 'wise mind' holds the key to understanding our emotions, where they come from and where they are likely to lead us, until we discover for ourselves that the real wisdom is found in kindness and respect for others. Through developing this state we can identify, process, and deconstruct the layers of conditioning which keep so many of us stuck in negative cycles with roots in our childhood experiences. Imagine the impact on future generations if they were taught from a young age how to center their hearts on love and their minds on wisdom, where would that take us as a society? Discovering your inner self is not an easy journey for anyone, and no one can walk the path for us, but the destination is an incomparable state of alignment between the world around us and the universe within us. Give yourself a chance, put faith in the wisdom of your mind, and achieve the incredible every day. These are some of the tips that Dr. Caroline Leaf leaves us in this episode of The Resilient Minds Podcast. Danielle talks with Dr. Caroline Leaf today! Hear from Dr. Leaf herself about her newest amazing book 'Cleaning up your Mental Mess!' Thoughts are real physical “things” that occupy mental real estate, and they have a tremendous amount of influence on your physical body and brain. In my clinical trials we saw how the mind influenced biomarkers through blood testing. Those who had better mind-management had younger inner ages and healthier biomarkers! So bottom line: invest in your mind & mental health because no diet, exercise plan, wellness retreat etc will work unless you get your thinking right. In my new book Cleaning up Your Mental Mess I teach you how to do correct and effective mind-management: https://www.cleaningupyourmentalmess.com Meet Dr. Caroline Leaf! Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm excited to talk with Dr. The primary aim of these trials is to make mental health care more affordable, applicable, and accessible worldwide, and to reduce the stigma around mental health. Key Points from Our Conversation: The benefit we get from exercise is determined by our mind. The book was inspired by the research Dr. Leaf did to determine out what can actually change when we renew our minds, as well as how that impacts the brain, body, and how we function in life. Mind and brain are separate. Your brain is physical; your mind is your thinking, feeling, and choosing. Your mind produces thoughts in your brain. A neurocycle helps allow you to track thoughts and behaviors. Once we connect with wisdom, we can better observe our behavior then analyze it. Like a tree has branches, thoughts have memories. If you want to find the root, look for warning signals like frustration, irritation, depression, anger. Don’t push them aside – inspect them. Don’t be scared of depression and anxiety. Instead, see them as helpful messengers. Renewing your mind is a lifestyle. Our world today has certainly become far more chaotic than we had anticipated. As such, it becomes challenging to avoid toxic threatening thoughts and downstream manifestations like depression or anxiety. As our guest today makes clear, we don’t have to settle into this mental mess as if it is just our “new normal.” There is hope and there is help available to us, and the road to healthier thoughts and more happiness may actually be shorter than we think. Today we have a special BONUS episode on the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast with a very insightful backstory for how we came to meet our next guest. But first, if you are new here, my name is Andrea Samadi, and I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field, with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are an educator, or in the corporate space, to take your results to the next level. If we want to improve our social, emotional and cognitive abilities, it all starts with an understanding of our brain. You can watch this interview on YouTube here. ----------------BACKSTORY----------------- I first heard our next guest on Dr. Daniel and Tana Amen’s Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast[i] right at the start of the Pandemic last May 2020 where I learned about a “Step 5 Process to Managing Trauma.” At the time of this interview, many people around me were just beginning to feel the stressors and pressure that this global pandemic was having on the world, and I began to pay attention to what this speaker was saying. I usually listen to my podcasts early morning and takes notes on my phone, and I began quickly writing what I was learning on this podcast. This speaker caught my attention because she mentioned that she had spent 25 years in the in South Africa in the worst areas—working with local schools, and community centers where she would teach them about their brain and their mind, and her work had such an incredible impact on those around her, they would fill these rooms, with standing room only. I know what it takes to fill a room, coming from my work in the speaking industry, working closely with Bob Proctor Seminars, so I knew she had to be doing something outstanding to draw this much interest. This podcast episode ended and I went back to my usual work life and interviewing new speakers. At that time, I was referred to a publisher and was working with many of authors connected to this polisher (Corwin Press), and my interview schedule filled up through the summer, and I wasn’t looking for new guests, I was just trying to keep up with the demand to interview the ones I had in cue. Then I had an email from one of my LinkedIn contacts, John Prucha[ii], from Atlanta, GA, who I heard from occasionally as he was enjoying the podcast episodes and often would send me his thoughts and feedback. One day he sent me a private message asking if I had considered reaching out to Dr. Carolyn Leaf[iii] for the podcast. At the time he sent me the message, I was swamped with the line-up of guests, but I do take all referrals seriously, and wrote down Dr. Leaf’s name on my desk. And went back to work as usual. A couple of weeks later I was working on a Character Book that I am creating, and this time, I am doing the interior design of the book, instead of sending it to a publisher, and I was looking for some headings to go along with the lessons I was creating. For each Character Trait, like Attentiveness, I have created ways to learn this attribute, and had the heading THINK (with some tips on what to think about before studying how to become more attentive), LEARN (the actual lesson on attentiveness), TAKE ACTION (with an activity to implement attentiveness into your daily life) and I was searching for the last heading. What happens to people after they learn a new skill? When I don’t know the answer to something, I usually type it into Google and see what comes up. I typed in THINK, LEARN, and the FIRST thing to come up was a book called Think, Learn, Succeed: Understanding and Using Your Mind to Thrive at School, the Workplace and Life[iv] by Dr. Caroline Leaf! If you had been in my office, you would have seen me glance at the note on my desk as my brain processed, “Hey, wasn’t that the same person who John Prucha from LinkedIn asked me to contact?” Then I typed Dr. Leaf’s name into my notes, and there she was, on the Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast, so I put down what I was doing, and emailed her offices to request her as a guest on the podcast. I don’t believe in accidents, or that things happen by chance or luck. I believe that when there is an opportunity that we can easily miss it if we are not aware. I really should have reached out to Dr. Leaf the minute I knew of her background with education and the brain, which is the whole entire theme of this podcast, for those who have been following us. I did hear back from her offices, from someone named Jessica, who let me know that Dr. Leaf was currently swamped, but for me to reach back to her in January. Of course I put a note up on my calendar on my wall to contact Dr. Leaf then, and circled it so I wouldn’t forget. And went on with my work and life, until I was contacted by Podbean, who hosts this podcast, to see if I could be interested in moderating an event that was coming up in November of 2020, called Wellness Week. I wrote back that I would love to do this and asked to learn more about the session I would be moderating. I received an email back that I would be running the session about Neuroscience, Mental Health and Coaching with John Kim, and….Dr. Caroline Leaf! Of course I did a deep dive into Dr. Leaf’s work prior to that session, and loved every minute of speaking with her, learning more, taking more notes, and knowing that it would be so much fun to one day interview her face to face on The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast. And today is that day. World-renowned neuroscientist and best-selling author Dr. Caroline Leaf, is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. During her years in clinical practice and her work with thousands of underprivileged teachers and students in her home country of South Africa and in the USA, she developed her theory (called the Geodesic Information Processing theory) of how we think, build memory, and learn, into tools and processes that have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD), autism, dementias and mental ill-health issues like anxiety and depression. She has helped hundreds of thousands of students and adults learn how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain to succeed in every area of their lives, including school, university, and the workplace. Dr. Leaf is about to release her NEW book, Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress and Toxic Thinking (March 2, 2021) where the solution is offered in five action-oriented steps called the Neurocycle, where she shares practical application and strategies for readers. Backed by clinical research and illustrated with compelling case studies, Dr. Leaf provides a scientifically supported plan to find and eliminate the root of anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts in reader’s lives so they can build a healthy new and automated neural network in 63 days, the length of time to properly build a new habit. “I truly believe that mental mess is something we all experience often,” writes Dr. Leaf, “and that it isn’t something we should be ashamed of. This is my profession, and I still have to clean up my mind daily. The events and circumstances of life aren’t going anywhere; people make a lot of decisions every day that affect us all, suffering of some sort for you and your loved ones is inevitable. That said, I wholeheartedly believe that although the events and circumstances can’t be controlled, we can control our reactions to these events and circumstances. This is mind-management in action!” Dr. Leaf leverages the strategies she has developed working with patients over the last 38 years to teach readers how to foster and cultivate the power of their own thinking and direct their own brain changes. Mind-management, when done correctly, helps facilitate talk between the conscious, the subconscious, and the nonconscious mind. This, in turn, gets brainwaves flowing in a healthy way, optimizing brain function. This is done by implementing the Neurocycle, a simple, clinically researched mind-management tool for personal use to address and ameliorate such warning signals as anxiety, depression, toxic thinking, inability to concentrate, irritability, exhaustion and burnout before they take over someone’s mind. In CLEANING UP YOUR MENTAL MESS, you will learn: What happens when we don’t use our minds properly Mind-management and why we need it How the 5 steps can help reduce anxiety and depression by up to 81% according to clinical studies Why mind-management is the solution to cleaning up your mental mess How the science can help us transition from being aware of toxic thoughts, to catching and managing them in their early stages How our thoughts physically affect ourselves and others How to capitalize on directed neuroplasticity using the Neurocycle To apply mind-management to unwire toxic habits and trauma How to leverage the lessons in the book for their daily lifestyle, including connection, brain-building, sleep, diet, exercise, people-pleasing, toxic perfectionism, overthinking, toxic emails and texts Why mindfulness is not enough and how strategic mind-management through the 5 steps can take a reader beyond mindfulness You can order your copy of Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess[v] starting March 2nd (and pre-order your copy if you are listening to this podcast on March 1st). Welcome Dr. Leaf, it’s such a pleasure to meet you face to face after working with you during Podbean’s Wellness Week for our session back in November last year. Intro: Dr. Leaf, before we get to the questions I have for you, I wanted to ask if you could give us a quick history of how you came to study the brain and how did you come to believe that if “we direct our mind, we can change our brain.” How did you set out to prove those 2 professors wrong who told you this concept was ridiculous? My Thoughts: I first heard about the importance of studying the mind with Bob Proctor, who I worked for through his seminars for 6 years. I learned about the mind, the importance of positive thinking, and how we could change our conditions, circumstances, environment and results with the power of our thoughts. Schools/educators were not ready for this, so when I began working with schools, I had to change the word “mind” to “brain” to make what I was saying science based. Like you, I believe that with the right strategy, we can learn anything. PART 1 of the BOOK “The Why and the How” Q1: When we release this podcast episode, it will be the day before you NEW book, Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress and Toxic Thinking comes out. This book takes the research you have done over the past 38 years and teaches us exactly how we can make the most of our mind and brain, taking us to new heights. Can you explain what our mind is, and what happens to it if we don’t keep our thoughts clean? What is the interconnected mind? What’s the difference between the mind and brain? Can we measure or see what “mind” is? My Thoughts: On episode 23[vi], we take a close look at “Understanding the Difference Between the Mind and the Brain” with Dr. Daniel Siegel’s definition of the mind and brain. It’s a topic I’ve been interested in learning more about since learning of the importance of positive thinking from Bob Proctor in the late 1990s. I know that our thoughts control our conditions, circumstances, environment and results. I just never had the science to prove it, other than one person I met, Dr. Joesph Guan (Clinical Director at the Brain Enhancement Center in Singapore) who studied with Dr. Bruce Lipton[vii] said he saw machines (called SQUID machines) that could measure a positive and/or negative thought and prove how negative thinking caused poor results. Q2: I know I heard you mention on your podcast with Dr. Amen that if we are anxious while eating, that our pancreas will not secrete the peptides needed to digest our food, just like the importance of our thinking on our telomeres/aging. What happens when we don’t use our minds correctly and have doubts and worries occupying our mind, like most of us do on a daily basis? Q3: Listeners of this podcast all know of the importance of self-regulation with regards to our results, but these days, we seem to get hit with something new every week that makes positive thinking really difficult. Can you explain what your research suggests to be the best way to manage our minds during stressful times? PART 2 of the Book, The Practical Application of the Neurocycle Q4: I heard you speaking about this concept of using your brain to change negative thinking a few times before I really understood it. I heard it first on the Brain Warrior Way Podcast, then again on Ed Mylett’s podcast, and you went into detail about this strategy during our session on Wellness Week and I was furiously writing notes to understand this concept. I will link all of these episodes in the show notes for people to find, so you don’t have to go into detail, but can you explain the metaphor that you use of how our worries are like branches on a tree, with the goal of identifying FIRST what we are worrying about, pick one worry to fix, get a new perspective of this worry, and then actually get to the root cause or origin of our worry to eliminate it? My thoughts: I downloaded the SWITCH app after watching the Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast again and have just started to work on one thing I worry about. After just one day, I am learning so much about why I think I worry about this one thing, and even just thinking/analyzing it, has helped. (Name it to tame it idea). Q5: It seems that every day we have a new challenge to overcome and many of us our experiencing some sort of anxiety that can lead to depression which is completely normal. How can we use neurocycling to build mental toughness, resiliency, or even emotional toughness to overcome how difficult times are these days? Q6: How can we use these 5 steps to break bad habits and build good lifestyle habits? Q7: How can we use these steps to detox from trauma or memories that we habitually play over in our minds—those Automatic Negative Thoughts? Thank you very much Dr. Leaf for the years of research you have done in this field, for the books and resources you have created, and your Switch app where anyone can go and begin to immediately implement these ideas. For people who want to learn more about your work, is the best place https://www.cleaningupyourmentalmess.com/ If someone wants to purchase your book, out March 2nd 2021, I will put the links in the show notes. Also, you have an incredible podcast, Cleaning Up the Mental Mess[viii] where you go into detail on using the neurocycle in specific areas of your life (most recently for reclaiming the loss of self and your identity). Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology.
On this episode, I had the pleasure to sit down with Dr. Caroline Leaf, a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. Dr. Leaf is also a bestselling author of several books, a teacher at academic and medical conferences and is currently conducting clinical trials to demonstrate the effectiveness of mind-directed techniques to help relieve mental ill-health problems such as anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts.
Do you believe in the mind-brain connection? Research is showing us this is true, and one of the experts in the field is here to explain more, Dr. Caroline Leaf. Dr. Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Dr. Leaf is also the bestselling author of Switch on Your Brain, Think, Learn, Succeed, Think and Eat Yourself Smart, and many more. All of that means she has studied the mind and the mind-brain connection, and researched the science of thoughts. She's been in this field for 25 years and today she travels the globe teaching and helping people understand how to control their thoughts, tapping into humans' innate resilience, and giving a new narrative to mental illness and mental health. More Awesome Health With Dr. Caroline Leaf Clearly there are many subjects we can talk about, the first one is what she thinks are the biggest issues we are dealing with today. Is it Alzheimer's, dementia and society's cognitive health? Dr. Leaf says it's not so much the labels of dementia and mental health, but mind management. About 60 years ago there was a complete shift in how we perceived humans. A person's story was considered important when dealing with whatever they were facing. Then things shifted and the focus became the person's symptoms (and not their stories) and their diagnoses based on the symptoms they were showing. So the physical aspect became dominant and the hunt began to find the genetic cause or neurological correlates of mental illness. Everything then shifted and centered on symptoms, diagnoses and medication to treat the diagnoses. Therapy became adjunct or even outright ignored, and medications are dominant. Dr. Leaf explains the particular class of drugs she is talking about are neurotropics and they act as analgesics (they numb the brain). They were discovered in the '50s by accident, and began being used when it was found they calmed people who were acting "crazy". That gave birth to the movement to medicate mental illness. By the mid 80s Prozac was released, and the push for medicating mental illness hasn't stopped. It's a problem because we are no longer in communities, forming meaningful relationships, being allowed to feel sad or anxious or depressed, and the self-help industry telling us we need to be happy all the time. (And if you aren't happy and the things self-help teaches you don't work then you are the problem). There's been an increase in suicides, mass shootings and other terrible things in countries that have adopted this philosophy. We Can Change Our Genes and Our Brains But since the early 2000s we now understand the brain can change and our genes can change. It means we are not hard-wired robots. It means we aren't born with a bad genetic hand or a bad brain, we can change our genes and our brain. We've also come to know our minds and our brains (and the rest of our physical body) are separate: our mind works through our brains and our bodies, and our minds are how we respond to life. Our brains and our bodies will be affected by whatever signal we put it into it because our brains and our bodies and our genes are responders, our mind is the generator. In that sense, if we are experiencing trauma or abuse or are engaged in a toxic habit that we haven't controlled and we aren't dealing with "our stuff" because society has us numbing our feelings with medications, then we can cause brain damage. Our brains are actually built to process, not to be numbed. The numbing of our brains keeps us stuck and injures our brains. Dr. Leaf shared so many profound insights, and I asked her to tell us more about the separation between our brains and our minds. How has she come to that conclusion based on her background and her studies and all the work she is doing? It's an ancient concept actually. If you look at the history of medicine and the philosophies of medicine and science, and you track back a few thousand years this concept wasn't even questioned. It was understood: the brain and the mind are separate from each other. Even though they are separate from each other they are interlinked and you cannot have one without the other. There's scientific evidence to back this: a significant amount of research, including research from Nobel Prize winners, shows as we think there is a physical response inside the brain. The philosophy we discussed earlier and the one that dominates now believes that everything is based in biology: your brain fires and produces your mind as an artifact; you have no free will and are a pre-programmed robot. But that goes counter to our natural instinct, we automatically know about our uniqueness and our ability to choose. The focus on the physical that began some 60 years ago has taken away the emphasis on that ability to choose, on the story each of us has to tell and on us as individuals. Her research has been on the history of science as well as quantum physics, neuroscience, epigenetics, etc. Those fields confirm without a doubt that there is an interactive separation. She defines the mind as the way you think, the way you feel, and the way you choose. You are always thinking and your thinking is unique to you. Thinking always goes with feelings and as you think so you feel and so you choose. Consciously you experience this every 10 seconds, but unconsciously this happens at 400 billion actions per second! That's just a taste of the mind-opening knowledge Dr. Leaf shares today. She also tell us why we should daydream for a few minutes every day and our mind management system as a whole. We finish with a few of her daily practices, all of which you will hear when you tune in to this episode of Awesome Health with Dr. Caroline Leaf. She has helped hundreds of thousands of students and adults learn how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain to succeed in every area of their lives, including school, university, and the workplace.Dr. Leaf is also the bestselling author of Switch on Your Brain, Think Learn Succeed, Think and Eat Yourself Smart, and many more. She teaches at academic, medical and neuroscience conferences, churches, and to various audiences around the world. Dr. Leaf is also involved in the global ECHO movement, which trains physicians worldwide on the mind-brain-body connection, mental health and how to avoid physician burnout. She runs the “Integrated Mind Network”, which is a panel of top neurosurgeons, neurologists, MD's, OBGYN's, endocrinologists, MD's, and neuroscientists with whom she consults with, and does research and clinical trials. She is also part of a mental health initiative in Washington, DC. Dr. Leaf is currently conducting clinical trials using the 5-step program she developed while in private practice to further demonstrate the effectiveness of mind-directed techniques to help relieve mental ill-health problems such as anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts. The primary aim of these trials is to make mental health care more affordable, applicable, and accessible worldwide, and to reduce the stigma around mental health.- https://drleaf.com/Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn, Instagram, or via email mark@vudream.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

Her podcast, Dr. Caroline Leaf Podcast, has been rated #31 on iTunes’ top Health podcasts. SHOWNOTES Welcome to this week’s episode’s featuring Dr Caroline Leaf: Caroline has had a fascination since she was a young girl to understand how the brain works with respect to the mind-body connection. Her work has taken her to work in Africa and war-torn areas. She has written several books and now uses her time in her clinical practice. Is mis-management of mental health on the rise or mental health on the rise? Here, Caroline discusses. She talks about the issue of creating a safe space to talk about mental health Caroline talks about forming, analysing, re-conceptualising habits over a course of 63 days rather than the 21 day habit-forming paradigm Caroline talks about how affirmations can used for a positive change and discusses how it can be classed as a band-aid too. Multi-tasking vs single tasking is discussed and Caroline says the science says we’re built to tackle one thing at a time and then that in itself creates a habit. Caroline talks about the impact of social media and mental health and it’s not a case of just limiting use in children but leading by example as parents, elders etc to limit their time on smartphones “Mind-wandering” can help with creative thoughts so having a break for 15 minutes through the day can help “We can be so connected that we disconnect” – spending that quality time with someone is so meaningful because loneliness is the biggest killer in world because we are not designed to be alone. Caroline believes happiness comes from a sense of identity and purpose. Caroline’s routine involves a strong black coffee, detoxing and brain-building activities Caroline’s top things that bring her joy is her work which is happily satisfying and her family Her favourite last meal would be an organic kale salad. Her non-negotiable thing she couldn’t do without is enjoying her infra-red sauna or winding down with some TV to relax the mind. Controlling the mind is the biggest thing Caroline believes people can do for their health because ultimately the mind controls the body. Understanding the power of the mind and choice is a way of dealing with challenging times especially if you can make it work for you. Caroline’s fantasy dinner party guests include a quantum physicist, a mathematician, and a philosopher/theologian who she has been in admiration of in her academic field. Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On would be Caroline’s theme song. The things that make Carline laugh include her family – kids and the dogs. Gratitude is a practice is part of optimism bias and is Caroline’s awareness helps her with her gratitude mindset. Reaching out to others is the thing listeners can do because changing what you think can ultimately change humanity and change the world. Last week I was listening to Jonathan Van Ness’ podcast, Getting Curious (whom many of you might know from the Netflix show, Queer Eye). The episode, What is Toxic Stress & Why is She So Bad?, featured Dr. Caroline Leaf who’s a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc in Logopedics and Audiology, specializing in metacognitive and cognitive neuropsychology.Where Does Toxic Stress Come From?Leaf describes how negative thinking – especially the same negative thought repeated over time – creates a toxic stress. For example, if you always criticize and judge your body every time you see it in the mirror, that negative thought creates “bad wiring” in your brain that affects the health of your body. What about the Toxic Stress of Homophobia? As an example, last year I began to feel physically tired and almost ill whenever I received a homophobia or hateful comment on my Medium publication, Th-Ink Queerly. The anger began to negatively affect my health and my relationship. In my emotionally frustrated state my creativity was completely blocked, which is the essence of my livelihood. I knew I had to change, because the situation itself wasn’t going to changeThe Importance of Being the Witness. How to observe your behaviour by “standing back” and learning how to change what you're feeling. Things that help with this process include regular meditation, becoming aware of your triggers, and practicing noticing. You can take this to another level by asking for help in the form of an “awareness buddy” or working with a coach. How can we think in ways that make for a physiologically healthy brain? You Think, You Feel, You Choose. You can't suppress an emotion like grief or anger. It doesn't go away. Instead, you need to acknowledge and express the emotion to deal with it over time. Yet you can re-wire your brain, even if you’ve been stuck in a pattern of negative thinking for a long time. Your brain and your thoughts are not who you are, and just like a habit, it takes time and consistency of practice to create new and healthier ways of thinking.Leaf’s 5-Step Process to “Switch on your Brain”AwarenessDeep analytical thinking.Write it downEditActionReferencesHow to Let Go of Being Right to Be Who You Are – LOP018Why the Stories of Your Past Are Not Who You Are – LOP020How Journaling Helps You Create What You Want in Life – LOP023Is Forgiveness of Homophobia a Gay Male Gift? It is becoming more and more evident that the same parenting principles that have been taught in Scripture for centuries are now being supported with modern science. Not only has the Bible always been a wonderful training manual for raising kids, it also has been around a whole lot longer than modern psychology; its veracity is time tested. When it comes to parenting, maybe it's time we learn the science behind heeding the Word. Our guest, Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc in Logopedics and Audiology, specializing in metacognitive and cognitive neuropsychology. She is a bestselling author and TV show host who helps her audience discover their God-wired uniqueness. There are a lot of personality and intelligence tests designed to label people and put them in a particular box, but Dr. Caroline Leaf says there is much more to a person than a personality profile can capture. In her new book, The Perfect You: A Blueprint for Identity, Dr. Leaf tackles this concept from theological, philosophical, and scientific angles, challenging readers to think deeply about their identity and enabling them to apply these insights to their daily lives. How Scientific Parenting Principles Often Confirm Biblical Ones Way back in the infancy of Shepherds Hill Academy, we actually did not know a lot about the science behind what we were doing. I'm not sure many people did. All we knew is that when we interacted with these kids, according to their own particular bent, using the principles of Scripture, free from the toxic influences of our de-civilizing culture in a safe, authoritative, community environment, incredible things happened. Though I hesitate to throw around the word “miracle” too cavalierly, the parents of most of these kids certainly would not. The results started making more sense when we started seeing scientific support for what God said we should simply take by faith in Scripture. We know that even a lot of Christian parents these days seem to put more stock in science than they do in the Bible. Doctors, rather than grandparents or pastors, are the new “go to” sages for parenting advice and assistance—many of whom have never even had kids of their own! But really: “How's it been working for us?” While doctors are too often too quick to medicate kids, kids who come to Shepherds Hill Academy on a pharmacy's worth of medications are most often leaving medication-free—about 70% of the time to be exact. Of course, this doesn't happen overnight, but it is still valid evidence for much of what today's guest is going to share with us today. I'm really looking forward to hearing more of the science behind God's Word with her in the course of our discussion today. Dr. Caroline Leaf and I discuss science, Scripture, and parenting as we cover the following topics: How do we correctly use science? Are false premises a root problem in parenting today's kids? The power of our thought process. Understanding the truth about medications. How to appropriately challenge your doctor if he/she is quick to suggest medications. Why nondigital interaction with your teen is vital. Is negativity affecting the brain? Why you should avoid saying, “Because I said so. I'm the parent.” Picture provided by: mnplatypus
