In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I sit down with John Wetmore to unpack his philosophy of Do More Now, Get Better Later. Together, we explore how focusing on action, rather than perfection, can unlock transformative growth in both your personal and professional life. Whether you're stuck in analysis paralysis or just waiting for the “perfect” time to start, this conversation will challenge you to stop overthinking and start moving.John Wetmore is one of the most driven individuals I've had the pleasure of meeting. He's built an incredible career in the insurance industry by embracing a mindset that prioritizes consistent effort over perfect execution. John is a $200 million insurance agency owner, professional business coach and speaker, best-selling author and host of insurance insiders podcast. From overcoming financial struggles and negativity to becoming a leader who inspires others, John's journey is proof that change starts with taking action—even when it feels messy. When I first met John, I was immediately drawn to his authenticity and the way he spoke about his journey. He's someone who doesn't shy away from sharing the raw truth about where he's been and what it took to get where he is today. John grew up broke, had his first child at 16, and faced countless challenges along the way. But what stands out most is his relentless drive to create a better life for himself and his family.Overcoming Negativity and Embracing MentorshipJohn shared how he used to wake up wired for negativity—it was just his default setting. But through honest feedback from mentors and support from his wife, he began to see that he was the problem. More importantly, he realized that because he was the problem, he could also be the solution. That mindset shift, paired with guidance from people who cared about him, helped him start transforming his life. The Alimony Letter: A Turning PointOne of the most powerful moments John shared was receiving a letter about overdue alimony payments. That letter could have crushed him, but instead, it became a turning point. It made him realize he was letting small frustrations control his life. In that moment, he made the decision to let go of perfectionism and focus on activity. That single decision changed everything. The Do More PhilosophyJohn's philosophy of Do More Now, Get Better Later resonated deeply with me. It's such a simple idea: start where you are, do the work, and worry about refining the process later. For John, this mindset led to a breakthrough year in which he tripled his effort, stopped overthinking, and finally saw the results he wanted.Lessons from Baseball: Swing the BatJohn shared a story about his son's baseball practice that perfectly illustrates his philosophy. The coach told the kids to swing the bat as hard as they could, without worrying about whether they hit the ball. The goal was to build strength, not perfection. That's exactly what John preaches: focus on the effort, not the outcome. If you're not swinging, you're not even in the game.Key TakeawaysStop Waiting for Perfect: You don't need all the answers to start. Take the first step, and the clarity will come.Embrace Mistakes: Failure is part of the process. Every mistake teaches you something.Own Your Mindset: Recognize when your thinking is holding you back, and commit to changing it.Take Action Now: Activity leads to momentum. The more you do, the more progress you'll make.Key Quotes"You can't perfect the activity unless you're willing to begin it.""I decided I was done worrying about getting everything perfect—I just went to work.""Stop worrying about the results; swing the bat. You'll never hit the ball if you don't take the swing.""Progress doesn't happen in your comfort zone—it starts when you take action, no matter how small."John's story reminds us that success isn't about being perfect—it's about being willing to take the first step, even when it feels messy or uncertain. Whether you're trying to grow your business, improve your relationships, or simply get unstuck, the key is to do more now. Don't wait. Don't overthink. Just swing the bat and trust that you'll get better along the way.Key Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Meeting at 8 Percent01:33 My First Impressions of John and His Background02:34 John's Journey to Overcome Negativity04:52 How Mentorship Helped John Grow13:00 John's Career in Insurance and Early Challenges16:54 The Alimony Letter That Changed Everything18:15 Embracing Action Over Perfection20:09 The Power of Doing More Now21:49 Why Perfectionism Keeps You Stuck24:07 Taking the First Step: Lessons from Baseball27:18 Final Reflections and Key LessonsTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

In this episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Carolyn Leaf, who shared invaluable insights on how to support children in managing their mental well-being. The show highlighted the pressing issue of childhood suicide, which has reached epidemic proportions, with rates surpassing those of adults. Dr. Carolyn emphasized the importance of teaching children how to understand and handle their emotions effectively. She pointed out that negative emotions are temporary and not a permanent state. Using a powerful analogy, she likened children to pilots flying a plane without being taught how to navigate, land, or manage it properly. Parents play a vital role in guiding their children through emotional challenges. It is crucial to educate them about their emotions, equipping them with the tools to navigate through the complexities of our modern world, including the impact of social media and its potential to trigger negative emotions, depression, and self-loathing. During the episode, Dr. Carolyn introduced the concept of the "neuro cycle," which involves guiding children through the process of addressing and resolving negative feelings effectively. The show proved to be a treasure trove of valuable information and strategies for parents and guardians seeking to help their children develop emotional resilience and well-being in today's challenging environment. On today's podcast, you will learn: The alarming rise in childhood suicide rates, surpassing those of adults. How children are not being taught how to manage their emotions. The role of our current society, including social media on children's mental well-being. Valuable strategies and advice to help children develop emotional resilience. The importance of teaching children that emotions are temporary. The "neuro cycle" method to help children process and resolve negative emotions effectively. STRONG- The Iron Will Way- The official podcast of the Iron Legion Strength Co.
In this episode we'll discuss “The Perfect Day” exercise and how to use it as a roadmap for your life and also “The Perfect You” and how to use that to set your goals and daily actions. The things that we want to achieve, our goals, are typically things that may be slightly out of reach for who we are today. We need to become the person who can achieve those goals. An evolved version of our current self. The “Perfect You” exercise can help you determine what that evolved version of you looks like and how to become that person. LFG!
I want you to think about your dreams and goals right now. Do you struggle with perfectionism, which keeps you from putting yourself out there? Are you afraid to step out because you don't have the entire plan figured out yet? If you don't, something could go wrong, right?! Let me ask you; are you still in research mode, and it's been 6 or 12 months? Or you've been saying you're going to do this for three years and haven't started yet? Challenges come when we pursue our dreams. We need some pick-me-ups to keep us going when the going gets tough. Today is for you if… If you're tired of being in constant planning mode. If you feel paralyzed by the need to be perfect. If you're ready to shift from research mode to go mode so you can actually reach those dreams you've had for years. When we're growing, there's so much we need to learn, but there is also something we need to let go of to achieve our dreams and do what God put in our hearts to do. So here are three things we need to let go of to fulfill our God-given purpose: 1. You don't need to be PERFECT…You just need to be CONSISTENT We will never be perfect. It's impossible. And if you're waiting to put yourself or your work out into the world until it's perfect, you'll be waiting a long time. Only God is perfect, and He doesn't expect us to be perfect either…p.s. that scripture that says, “Be perfect as I am perfect,” means to grow in stages. If God doesn't expect us to be perfect, why do we put that on ourselves? Ask yourself, why do I really need to be perfect? Am I afraid of failure? Will I be seen as incompetent? I'm not good enough if it's not perfect. Will I be rejected? Just show up, be consistent, and keep moving forward. I promise you'll make progress. 2. You don't need to HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT…You just need to TAKE THE NEXT STEP If you're a planner, this one may be your Achilles' heel. Plans don't always go as you planned. Don't let the need to have a plan all figured out hold you captive from moving forward. Just take the next step. 3. You don't need to KNOW EVERYTHING…You just need to USE WHAT YOU DO KNOW If you're stuck in research mode, you might feel like people will think you're incompetent if you don't know enough. We really get stuck in research mode because of fear. Remember the little boy in the Bible that gave Jesus his five loaves of bread and two fishes? That little boy gave what he had, and Jesus turned it. We don't have to know everything to fulfill our God-given purpose. All of these things we don't need are forms of fear. They're keeping us stuck and preventing us from fulfilling our God-given purpose. God has a beautiful, special plan for you. But it's not going to just drop in our lap. God gives us the tools, wisdom, legs, mouth and hands to make things happen. We don't have to make it happen alone. God's with us. He also brings people on our path to guide and support us. Do you have someone to come aside you to help you fulfill your God-given purpose? That's why I'm offering the Courageous Club. It's opening up tomorrow…Friday, January 13th! It's for you if you're like I was, and you're a bird in a cage with the door open but are too afraid to fly out. But, you're tired of living that way…Courageous Club just might be for you. You've got this, and Father's got you! Thanks a Bunch for listening! Until Next Time, Live Fearlessly Free!

Each one of us has a unique story to share—and within each of these complex stories many of us have experienced loss, heartache, shame, and tragedy which profoundly affect our lives. But once we begin to face our heartaches and realize their effect on our lives, we can see the slow steady pursuit of a God who only desires our healing and wholeness. This week we'll be discussing the way that God cares about each of our stories and is there to walk us through our trauma with Dr. Dan Allender and Cathy Loerzel—founders of the Allender Center, and how we can act out of the new heart He so lovingly restores to us with Pastor Andrew Farley. And so then we've got an in and out and in and out of fellowship. Naomi was raised in one of those JW families that didn’t have a tv and that limited books because they were reflective of Satan’s world. Their lives, even their limited traveling, revolved around the Kingdom work. You’re going to see how even in such a controlled environment a child still has their own mind and thoughts, and how that plays out. It was really interesting what woke Naomi up, and you’re even going to find out how a Buzzfeed quiz can get a JW reprimanded. She chose two songs to represent her journey. The first is Cigarettes by Illy and the second is Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. The resources mentioned included the books Crisis of Conscience and I’m Perfect You’re Doomed. Chloe’s family was in the circuit work as Jehovah's Witnesses, but her family also had a lot of pressure in the house, pressure that she’ll describe in a way that will put you right there, pressure that perhaps you felt in your home if you too had a particularly volatile parent. Chloe, like so many, lived a double life and ended up getting married young to another JW. Today she shares custody of her daughter with that JW and at my request she provides some really amazing advice for others in that situation. There are a lot of things here that I’m sure you’ll relate to on some level. Special music by Secret Cigarettes and Cats To Whip. Resources mentioned include the book “I’m Perfect You’re Doomed”, the exjw reddit, and the podcast called This JW Life (particularly the episode about the FOG and cult tactics). BIOGRAPHY Dr. Caroline Leaf is a neuroscientist, mental health & mind expert, bestselling author, and speaker with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics. Her work goes beyond mindfulness and the ‘quick fixes’ of the current mental health system; since the early 1980’s, she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. Dr. Leaf teaches at academic, medical, and neuroscience conferences to various audiences around the world. She was selected as an advisor on a mental health initiative committee for the White House. She is the author of Think, Learn, Succeed, Switch On Your Brain, Think and Eat Yourself Smart, and The Perfect You, among many other books and journal articles. She has helped hundreds of thousands of students and adults learn how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain to succeed in every area of their lives, including school, university and the workplace. Her podcast, Dr. Caroline Leaf Podcast, has been rated #31 on iTunes’ top Health podcasts. SHOWNOTES Welcome to this week’s episode’s featuring Dr Caroline Leaf: Caroline has had a fascination since she was a young girl to understand how the brain works with respect to the mind-body connection. Her work has taken her to work in Africa and war-torn areas. She has written several books and now uses her time in her clinical practice. Is mis-management of mental health on the rise or mental health on the rise? Here, Caroline discusses. She talks about the issue of creating a safe space to talk about mental health Caroline talks about forming, analysing, re-conceptualising habits over a course of 63 days rather than the 21 day habit-forming paradigm Caroline talks about how affirmations can used for a positive change and discusses how it can be classed as a band-aid too. Multi-tasking vs single tasking is discussed and Caroline says the science says we’re built to tackle one thing at a time and then that in itself creates a habit. Caroline talks about the impact of social media and mental health and it’s not a case of just limiting use in children but leading by example as parents, elders etc to limit their time on smartphones “Mind-wandering” can help with creative thoughts so having a break for 15 minutes through the day can help “We can be so connected that we disconnect” – spending that quality time with someone is so meaningful because loneliness is the biggest killer in world because we are not designed to be alone. Caroline believes happiness comes from a sense of identity and purpose. Caroline’s routine involves a strong black coffee, detoxing and brain-building activities Caroline’s top things that bring her joy is her work which is happily satisfying and her family Her favourite last meal would be an organic kale salad. Her non-negotiable thing she couldn’t do without is enjoying her infra-red sauna or winding down with some TV to relax the mind. Controlling the mind is the biggest thing Caroline believes people can do for their health because ultimately the mind controls the body. Understanding the power of the mind and choice is a way of dealing with challenging times especially if you can make it work for you. Caroline’s fantasy dinner party guests include a quantum physicist, a mathematician, and a philosopher/theologian who she has been in admiration of in her academic field. Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On would be Caroline’s theme song. The things that make Carline laugh include her family – kids and the dogs. Gratitude is a practice is part of optimism bias and is Caroline’s awareness helps her with her gratitude mindset. Reaching out to others is the thing listeners can do because changing what you think can ultimately change humanity and change the world. In a world filled with distraction, sin and trauma, how many “things” a day would you say you think on that are excellent and praiseworthy? If you are anything like Sara, focusing on the negative is so much easier than on the positive. But in her studies this week, she was reminded of a small scene in Peter Pan that is so appropriate: Peter is in the children's bedroom; they have seen him fly; and they wish to fly too. They have tried it from the floor and they have tried it from the beds and the result is failure. "How do you do it?" John asked. And Peter answered: "You just think lovely, wonderful thoughts and they lift you up in the air."That sentiment is a little sappy but it also contains a measure of truth. The only way to defeat evil thoughts is to learn to think differently.BE IN THE WORD:"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things." (Philippians 4:8)BE EDUCATED:1. Think On These Things An article that breaks down each of the words Paul instructs us to think on. 2. The Perfect You author Dr. Caroline Leaf. We have incredible minds that are truly worth celebrating. We must also remember, however, that with the incredible power in our minds come responsibility for how we use it: we cannot escape the consequences of our choices.3. Bigger Than I Thought You Were by Passion Music. This is the song Monica talks about. BE DOERS, NOT JUST HEARERS:“You are special. You are unique. You have a particular way of thinking, feeling, and choosing that acts like a filter through which you experience reality. It shapes the worldview you build into your mind, which in turn shapes your future thoughts, feelings, words and behavior. If this filter is broken, your perception of reality can become distorted. If you are bitter or have low self-esteem, for example, your world view can become clouded by toxic thinking, which in turn shapes your mindset and actions…trauma and sin can interrupt your design.” (Dr. Caroline Leaf)Do you know you? How well do you know yourself? Your personality? Your natural tendencies? Is your filter broken? What has happened to you that you might be hanging onto aware or unaware that is distorting your reality? “It is important to remember that thoughts are made into habits through deliberate, repeated, and conscious cognitive thinking. This type of thinking has to occur for a minimum of 3 cycles of 21 days in order for the true understanding to take place.”Are you trying to develop new ways of thinking? What deliberate strategies have you put into place in order to change your way of thinking? “To ensure that we stay in our Perfect You and correctly respond to the circumstances of everyday life, we need to train ourselves to consult with the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us renew our mindsets and teach us how to react and behave. The Holy Spirit will guide us, if we choose to listen to him, and show us the correct way to ‘consciously veto’ our thinking, feeling and choosing. In this way, we fulfill the requirements of Scripture to constantly pray.”Do you call upon the Lord, upon the Holy Spirit to help you grow and change the areas of your life you know is
