In the sixth episode, Linda McQuaig and Ian Thomson discuss the rising fortunes of the billionaire class amid shrinking incomes and opportunities for the vast majority before and during the pandemic. In speaking about the impacts of billionaires on our democratic systems, McQuaig says, “this accumulation of wealth in the hands of billionaires... It's not just that it's tremendously unfair, which of course it is, it's that it gives them so much political power that they get to effectively control the world… The wealthy corporate elite now has so much power that it can effectively block any kind of collective action. And that's exactly what they're doing. The reason that there isn't progress on climate change isn't that the public is resistant. The public would actually like there to be action on climate change. It's the immensely powerful interests in the fossil fuel industries that are single-handedly blocking that.... it's not just unfair they have all that money; it's detrimental to the survival of the human race… So when I talk about a wealth tax, I'm not just talking about it so we can get money from them. I'm talking about a wealth tax that will curb their political power, economic and political power. So they can't control things and prevent us from taking the collective action we need to take.” According to Thomson, and the most recent Oxfam International report Inequality Kills “Whether it's from the climate disasters that are taking lives. Whether it's the vaccine inequality that means that COVID-19 is taking more lives - these are deaths that could be easily prevented if we had a more equitable vaccine distribution. And people are also being pushed to the brink of extreme hunger and actually are dying of starvation. These are the sorts of real-life impacts of this extreme wealth inequality, largely in the lowest income countries, but also lower income people in all countries are suffering from. And when you take the numbers, you just see that actually people are dying every four minutes due to inequality. The numbers are so staggering that it is hard to wrap your head around what kind of suffering this is bringing about.” About today's guests: Award-winning journalist and activist Linda McQuaig is also the author of best-selling books, including: Shooting the Hippo: Death by Deficit and Other Canadian Myths; It's the Crude, Dude: War, Big Oil and the Fight for the Planet; The Trouble with Billionaires (co-authored with Neil Brooks) and most recently The Sport and Prey of Capitalists: How the Rich Are Stealing Canada's Public Wealth. A long-time and powerful voice of dissent against economic injustice and extremes of wealth, Linda has been described as “an indispensable public intellectual” and “an irritant to Canada's 1%” one of whom, Conrad Black, even suggested that she be “horse-Whipped”. Ian Thomson leads Oxfam Canada's work on government relations, corporate engagement and feminist policy influencing in Canada and internationally. Prior to joining Oxfam, he coordinated the human rights and natural resources program of a national ecumenical coalition and chaired the Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability. He is a board member of MiningWatch Canada and the Maquila Solidarity Network, and holds engineering degrees from Queen's University and the University of Toronto. Ian Thomson is the head of RSPB Scotlands Investigations team investigating wildlife crime against birds. This is no easy task given the on going battles with some land uses in Scotland and the persecution of several raptor species. An hour probably isn't long enough to discuss this issue but it was great to get an insight from someone who is on the very front line of raptor persecution. https://www.rspb.org.uk/about-the-rspb/at-home-and-abroad/scotland/

Ian Thomson speaks with Gabriel Gbadamosi about the writer’s need for selfishness, the use of not being comfortable in one’s own skin, subverting Englishness with JG Ballard and writing about Jamaica, Primo Levi and Haiti. The post Ian Thomson appeared first on The Royal Literary Fund.
This week, we go back to where it all started – for this podcast that is. Kaitlyn’s season was the first one that Here to Make Friends recapped, all the way back in 2015.By then, The Bachelor was more consistently casting people of color on the show – but they didn’t often get far or have very positive portrayals on the show. Of Kaitlyn’s contestants of color, only Ian Thomson – who had a very rough exit – got any real screen time during Monday’s recap. Once again, the supercut approach made the show even whiter. But Ian wasn’t the only Black man to have a very unflattering storyline on the show. Kupah James left at the beginning of episode four, after a painful conversation with Kaitlyn about their lack of connection and a dramatic exit interview. Jonathan Holloway, a soft-spoken single dad, made it a bit further despite being #TeamBritt. To find out more about that messy exit and what it was like in Kaitlyn’s Bachelorette mansion, we talked to Kupah and Jonathan about their time on the show. It may seem like the protests are simmering down, or at least like they’re out of the news cycle or your Twitter feed. But people are still in the streets, fighting for a better world, and it’s incumbent on us to stay tuned in and to keep doing what we can. As promised, we are going to give our community calls to action each week:(1) The Okra Project – “The Okra Project is a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever we can reach them.”https://www.theokraproject.com/(2) Native Women’s Association of Canada – Canada is having its own difficult conversations about racism and police brutality, and many of these dialogues center around police violence against First Nations peoples https://www.nwac.ca/(3) Subscribe to 2 Black Girls 1, support their Patreon https://www.patreon.com/2blackgirls1rose See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's LDS General Conference week, and in this episode Ian Thomson and Stephanie Dix join Latter-day Faith host Dan Wotherspoon in discussing the ways each of them prepare for it. As God- and Church-wrestlers, these semi-annual gatherings (and this time virtually only!) sometimes are greeted with less-than-enthusiastic attitudes, perhaps fear of the possibility of hurtful or tone-deaf messages, perhaps confusion as we recognize internal shifts that cast conference and the speakers and messages differently than the way we held them before. Each and every member approaches conference weekends with anticipations unique to them. Ian, Stephanie, and Dan's conversation centers around the panelists own journeys with conference, how they thought of it at earlier times in their lives, what has shifted in them through the years as their journey took them into new perspectives, and more. Each of them also speaks of framings they hold today as they approach conference. Where do they, if they do, find optimism about possibly wonderfully delivered and inspired messages and announcements? How do they temper tendencies toward cynicism and dismissing entire talks or sessions as being ruined or tainted by poorly thought out or insular speech and/or declarative stances? They share experiences in which they felt their hearts and minds shift more toward gratitude and appreciation rather than critique. All in all, it is just a terrific exchange that works toward ways to "get the most out of" conference, whether it is through particular spiritual practices, not engaging with it live but only later in print, or whatever it may be. Listen in as you ready yourself for this most unusual conference to come!
Ian Thomson reads Dante's Divine Comedy as a spiritual journey that resonates with his own experience of addiction. The post Ian Thomson appeared first on The Royal Literary Fund.
Diving off the Great Barrier Reef, Ian helped pull out a dead sea turtle. Looking into its eyes he knew it was trying to tell him something. When they opened it up they found a plastic bag, bottle caps, etc. That turtle changed his life in an amazing way. Thurs Ocean Crusaders was born.
To mark the centenary of the birth of Primo Levi, the British writers join Eleanor Wachtel to reflect on the late Italian author's exceptional writing about the Holocaust, science and humanity.
Dan talks with Ian Thomson about his older boyfriend, getting through a day in New York, and the role age doesn't play in a relationship.

'Becoming Colleen: Finding the Shoe that Fits' is a documentary about an 85 year old transgender woman, transitioning from male to female in the coastal community of Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast. Having lived most of her life as Colin – a husband, father, policeman, film-projectionist and self-declared shoe fetishist, Colleen has had to negotiate her gender transition later in life. More than a documentary about the transitioning of an elderly transgender woman: this is a story of Col and her wife Heather: two people whose love transcended their gender roles; a small community that comes together to support a woman in pursuit of her greatest dream; and how finding exactly the right pair of shoes can be a perfect fit. On today’s show, my close friend Craig Mack and I interview writer, producer & director, Ian Thomson, who with the support of Queer Screen, Acon, STC and Documentary Australia Foundation, has pulled together this most beautiful and evocative journey that touches on so many important social issues of our time. Not only does it shine a light on the world and life of a transgender lady growing up in rural Australia and the challenges that she faces along the way, this is story of inclusiveness, being true to yourself, spending time with and cherishing the elderly, evolving interpersonal relationships with friends, family and strangers, demonstrating the need forunderstanding, striving to learn from and showing empathy for people in the world around us, especially if they view the world a little bit differently to or approach life from a slightly different perspective to us. It makes me proud to share this work of art and I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do! The 'Becoming Colleen’ Sydney premiere is on Sunday 24th February thanks to Queer Screen as part of the Mardi Gras Film Festival. We all have different temperaments, and there are many combinations of elements that affect our spiritual journeys—including how recently we’ve entered into a time of questioning our original assumptions about life, church, and our souls. Because of this, a fairly common theme that arises in Mormon discussions is how it seems to some as if those who are making peace with Mormon life and its teachings and various elements of LDS culture that want to limit spiritual exploration must be doing everything possible to force new ideas into old containers, to redefine words and concepts in a way that almost completely changes their meaning. In short, the critique is that those who claim there is roominess in Mormonism for active, engaged, and fulfilling spiritual lives must be doing mental and spiritual gymnastics, must be contorting themselves and jamming their ideas into very small spaces. And this is often coupled with a suggestion (most often implied but sometimes explicit) that they are deceiving themselves or are spending the energy they do in this way because of fear or some other motive that is less than fully transparent. But is this accurate? In some cases, sure. And in many, this may be a fairly accurate description of an early stage in their journey. For most who have God- and Mormon-wrestled and emerged from the efforts expended in that kind of soul work, however, it has felt like anything but spiritual gymnastics/contortionism. It has felt like natural growth, very much akin to the other aspects of life in which they have moved from one place of understanding to another. In order to illustrate this (and as an attempt to go in depth in order to illustrate this more complete reordering that has felt to them like very worthy efforts), this episode features two wonderful and insightful panelists, Ian Thomson and Chris Kimball, in conversation with Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon about these claims of forcing a fit into a strict gospel message and culture or nuancing “truth” and certain concepts so completely that they now actually don’t mean much of anything. All three share elements of their own journey toward peace within the religion that nurtured them, even as it certainly still tests their patience and forces them to learn things about love and relationships and goodness and compassion that aren’t always enjoyable in the short-term. The challenge this episode presents is for listeners to hear for themselves and decide if, indeed, these discussants are deceived about the reasons for their continued engagement and stand on very insubstantial ground in their thought and practices, or if they represent an attractive, a-bit-down-the-pathway position that has its own integrity and ability to create a fulfilled life and peace of soul.

In short, the critique is that those who claim there is roominess in Mormonism for active, engaged, and fulfilling spiritual lives must be engaged in mental and spiritual gymnastics, must be contorting themselves and jamming their ideas into very small spaces in order to stay in fellowship with the Church and its members. In addition, this critique is often coupled with a suggestion (most often implied but sometimes explicit) that they are deceiving themselves or are spending the energy they do to find a good fit out of fear or some other motive that is less than fully transparent to them. Edmund de Waal chooses a writer he believes is one of the greatest of the modern age - Primo Levi, author of the Periodic Table. Born in 1919 in Turin, Levi was an Italian Jew, one of the few deported to Auschwitz who would escape alive. Primo Levi's account of his time in the camp, If This Is a Man, made him one of the first writers to document the Holocaust and it established his name around the world. But Levi was not just a writer. He was a chemist, which gave him the skills that helped save his life in Auschwitz. It was also a day job he never gave up, and his passion for science remained a life-long pursuit. After the War, Levi returned to Turin, married, had a family and wrote books in his spare time. He also became an enthusiastic letter-writer, corresponding with a new generation of Germans, to help them better understand the effects of the Nazi regime. Yet from his youth, Levi suffered from depression. In 1987 he took his own life, throwing himself down the stairwell in the house where he'd been born. Ceramicist and author Edmund de Waal joins Matthew Parris to discuss how Levi's work inspired The Hare With Amber Eyes - his own memoir of his family's history as Jews in 19th and 20th century Europe. And biographer Ian Thomson, one of the last to interview Levi, explains why we shouldn't confuse Levi the writer with Levi the man. Producer: Lizz Pearson First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.
