Instead, we can embrace them and implement strategies that allow us to better direct ourselves. Dr. Leaf shows us how to make sense of the messy mind and the scientific research behind those steps. REBROADCAST: This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm excited to talk with Dr. Caroline Leaf about her new book Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess. She is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and Ph.D. in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s, she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. Dr. Leaf is also the bestselling author of Switch on Your Brain, Think Learn Succeed, Think and Eat Yourself Smart, and many more. She teaches at academic, medical, and neuroscience conferences, churches, and to various audiences around the world. Dr. Leaf is also involved in the global ECHO movement, which trains physicians worldwide on the mind-brain-body connection, mental health, and how to avoid physician burnout. Dr. Leaf is currently conducting clinical trials using the 5-step program she developed while in private practice to further demonstrate the effectiveness of mind-directed techniques to help relieve mental ill-health problems such as anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts. The primary aim of these trials is to make mental health care more affordable, applicable, and accessible worldwide, and to reduce the stigma around mental health. Key Points from Our Conversation: The benefit we get from exercise is determined by our minds. The book was inspired by the research Dr. Leaf did to determine what can actually change when we renew our minds, as well as how that impacts the brain, body, and how we function in life. Mind and brain are separate. Your brain is physical; your mind is your thinking, feeling, and choosing. Your mind produces thoughts in your brain. A neurocycle helps allow you to track thoughts and behaviors. Once we connect with wisdom, we can better observe our behavior and then analyze it. Like a tree has branches, thoughts have memories. If you want to find the root, look for warning signals like frustration, irritation, depression, and anger. Don't push them aside – inspect them. Suppressing warning signals causes physical damage to the brain. Analyze your physical symptoms like stomach problems, tension, and rushing adrenaline. Also, check behaviors like non-verbal communication. Mental health is not a disease. The label is leading is mismanagement of health. Misery has become medicalized and treatment is typically symptom-focused, which is great for the body, but not the mind. The quick-fix mentality of symptom treatment has led to suppression. We are wired for love. Negative thoughts physically vibrate incorrectly in the brain and cause inflammation that affects the immune system and how we function. Jesus modeled pushing through and digging into the difficult. There is not a quick fix. The only way out is through. Embrace, process, and reconceptualize. Don't be scared of depression and anxiety. Instead, see them as helpful messengers. Renewing your mind is a lifestyle. Switch - 21-Day Brain Detox App Dr. Leaf's 5 Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking: Gather awareness - become aware of emotional and physical warning signals Reflect - ask, answer, and discuss. Get to the core. Write it down. It helps you get into the depths of why you think this, what you're doing, and how you feel. Recheck Activate mental reach - bringing order out of the chaos Let's Get Real Practical: Let's get practical by addressing one area of your life that you know God is calling you to take your thoughts captive. Action steps for this week: Identify what area of your life in which you feel stuck. Ask if your thinking in that area is toxic. Then write down the thought and replace it with the truth. The brain is not the mind. You are not your brain. You are your mind and you use your brain and that's a very distinctive difference.5:27 Your mind, on a psychological level, can be understood as how you think, feel and choose. Those three go together. You can't think without feeling. You can't think and feel without choosing. 7:11 So in other words, it's agency. So this, you choosing is you with your wise mind having agency over your decisions, over how you think, how you feel and how you choose. And that agency is something that we need to be empowered to develop and understand. And if you don't understand this connection, you kind of just bamboozle through life, sometimes making a mess and sometimes fixing up the mess, and lot of times, staying in the mess. And the messier you are, the more extreme the state becomes. And then you end up with quite extreme mental health challenges, like severe depression and all the things that go along with that.9:04 So mind-brain-body is kind of all of this and we can actually, with our mind, look at our behaviors, look at our emotions and everything, look at the signals, become thought detectors and deconstruct down to this, and find this thought and all its memories and be constructed and reconstructed.10:15 The first thing is to accept that mess is inevitable and mess is okay. So that's the first thing: you're human, you're alive, you're a mess. And that's just part of it. And it's actually normal.10:37 In other words life, life is just circumstances and events that are not things that we can control. So the only thing we actually have agency over is our reactions to the uncertainties of life.11:41 We've got to stop beating ourselves up about being messy. It is so part of our psycho neurobiology. We are wired and designed, whatever you want to say, for mess.11:52 The messiness is part of this experimentation that our mind/brain/body's doing all the time. What we're meant to do is observe how we are doing it. We're meant to stand back and self-regulate, so there's self-regulation is the second part of the answer. The first part is that it's okay to be a mess...And the second part is self-regulation.14:02 You know, so it's become about this, there's something wrong with you at your core and you're not supposed to be a mess. Actually, that's completely wrong. You are supposed to be a mess. That's how you can grow, repair, and grow. You cannot grow if you cannot repair. And if you don't miss, you can't repeat. You have to miss, to repeat, to grow. And that's the philosophy that helps mental health. 24:51 But if your brain and body are not functioning well, if they physically, the material, the substance is not healthy, then that's going to impact how well your mind can actually use your brain and your body, because your mind uses your brain and your body. And so that's why nutrition is important. 26:05 Nutrition for your brain is important. If you're going to put a lot of processed chemicals in your brain, you are going to have a problem. 26:56 The nervous system in the gut is made from the same material as the brain, [they] come from the same fetal tissue. It has as many neurons. There are many neurons in the gut as there are in the spinal cord, and even a few more.27:38 Everything in your body is vulnerable to toxic thoughts, and to life, everything in your body's vulnerable to life. Therefore if you, cumulatively over time, are living a very unmanaged life, your body is weakening daily and increasing your vulnerability to disease. So over time, the vulnerability is there, so that's why mind management is an absolutely critical factor when it comes to day-to-day living. 28:56 So we see over time, stress that is not dealt with, toxic stress, in other words, stress that has an effect, stuff that's not dealt with, will put you into a chronic state of toxic stress and toxic stress manifests with all these signals32:57 We see that the brain and body are literally wired for love and where we regulate our mind. If you're operating in love, we actually drive a healthy regulation on our mind. And when you have a healthy, a person who's managing their mess in this love way, they become a human that's contributing to society in a healthy, loving way. And it's core to humanity. We are celebrating The Thought Vault Podcast's FIRST YEAR BIRTHDAY! In this series we are sharing "The Best Of" in preparation for new episodes coming soon! This is a great time to catch up on crowd favorites! We all hear that forgiveness is healing. That we heal ourselves from forgiving others and that it's a gift when forgiveness is offered to us. From a biblical sense, this is precisely what we are taught as Christians; we should forgive the same way Christ forgave us. I do believe that healing comes from forgiveness, but there is a real struggle in the midst of this action. Sometimes we can't forget. Sometimes, forgiveness doesn't seem fair or warranted. The process of forgiveness can be arduous and painful or easy and light. There's a lot that is involved in forgiveness, and your faith in Christ will play a HUGE role in it. This is what we're going to talk about today, the mess of forgiveness.Forgiveness broke my family and in this episode, I dive into that hurt, & how we've learned to cope with this circumstance that has forever shaped each of us. Forgiving oneself can sometimes feel impossible, and can be the hardest to give. Shame, and guilt can destroy anyone. Forgiving ourselves, is taking care of ourselves in a way that helps us for our present and for our future. But The Enemy will make our minds turn against who we are, and who we know we are in Christ. It's easy to go dark, and can be very hard to stay in the light. But that's where forgiveness takes us, back to the light. Back to Christ.Dr Caroline Leaf cited in her book, Think Learn Succeed that Scientific research shows that forgiveness and love are good for your mind, brain, and body health! Ongoing results of the “Forgiveness Study” carried out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that people who develop an ability to forgive have greater control over their emotions; are significantly less angry, upset, and hurt; and are much healthier. It's easier to move forward into a purposeful future when you have truly forgiven.Forgiveness = freedom. Think about that for a moment. What does that mean for you? With this episode, it seemed fitting to end with an exercise that I learned from Professor Ronald Siegal, of Harvard Medical School, to help handle the emotions and feelings of forgiveness and hurts.Let's give this exercise aptly called the Soften Soothe, Allow Method, listen to this episode to practice this highly effective exercise that will give you the mindset to walk through deep hurts, and quite possibly get you to the point of forgiveness. Forgiveness is something we all must face in life, and the choice to forgive can radically change the rest of our lives, and if we aren't intentional, it can dictate the health of our bodies and heart. How do you want to live? Sometimes, forgiveness is the one thing holding us back. And isn't it wonderful that Jesus didn't hold it back from us? Thank you for listening to this episode. Key Points from Our Conversation: The benefit we get from exercise is determined by our mind. The book was inspired by the research Dr. Leaf did to determine out what can actually change when we renew our minds, as well as how that impacts the brain, body, and how we function in life. Mind and brain are separate. Your brain is physical; your mind is your thinking, feeling, and choosing. Your mind produces thoughts in your brain. A neurocycle helps allow you to track thoughts and behaviors. Once we connect with wisdom, we can better observe our behavior then analyze it. Like a tree has branches, thoughts have memories. If you want to find the root, look for warning signals like frustration, irritation, depression, anger. Don’t push them aside – inspect them. Don’t be scared of depression and anxiety. Instead, see them as helpful messengers. Renewing your mind is a lifestyle. Switch - 21 Day Brain Detox App Dr. Leaf's 5 Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking: Gather awareness - become aware of emotional and physical warning signals Reflect - ask, answer, and discuss. Get to the core. Write it down. It helps you get into the depths of why you think this, what you’re doing, and how you feel. How much do you care about the home you live in? Does it matter a little or a lot if it’s clean and safe with nice amenities? Of course. Likewise every day we wake up to live inside our brain. Like your home, you have control over the quality and state of your brain. Much more control than you have over your outside circumstances, actually, yet we don’t tend to function from this perspective, but instead tend to live as if our brain is concrete and hardwired. Dr. Caroline Leaf has made it her life’s work to debunk and disprove this and show us how our brain can be our servant instead of the other way around. As a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology she has worked since the early 1980s researching the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input. Dr. Leaf is the bestselling author of Switch on Your Brain, Think Learn Succeed, and coming soon, Cleaning Up The Mental Mess, which is the title of her top ranked health and wellness podcast. In this show we go through what led her into the field, how her faith overlaps with her vocational mission, and key aspects of the control we actually have and can employ regarding our brain. An overwhelming majority fear and avoid change, yet change is one of the best things for mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical development. Even if we are one of those rare people who like change, it is often becuase we are more in love with the idea of change than the process itself. If it is so good why do we hate change? In this episode I discuss why we avoid change, how to train your brain to embrace and love change, and how to know when change is good and worth the effort.
