What if every health issue is actually part of the same underlying problem? In this powerful episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz — world-renowned gastroenterologist, gut health expert, and author of Plant Powered Plus — explains why your gut health is a story of your brain-gut connection. He shares why filling the ‘God-shaped hole' is a biological requirement to reduce inflammation and start to heal. Skin issues, bloating, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, and even bloating may all be hidden symptoms of inflammation, driven by modern life, chronic stress, poor sleep, trauma, disconnection, and most importantly, a lack of spiritual connection. Dr. B shares a startling personal story of his own spiritual awakening that he had previously been too self-conscious to share. Dr. Bulsiewicz also breaks down: - Why modern convenience keeps us stuck in fight-or-flight instead of rest & digest - Practical, science-backed ways to reduce inflammation - Why health protocols help, but are never one-size-fits-all - Why the colon is your first line of defense against inflammation - Top 3 ways we're destroying our gut microbiome - How GLP-1 drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy) are changing gut health, and their potential long-term risks - Importance of fiber, protein quality, diet variety, and why the Western diet fuels inflammation We also explore the powerful link between science, faith, and healing — why spirituality, purpose, and human connection measurably improve physical health, and how loneliness, trauma, and individualism damage the gut and immune system. Backed by science, we unpack how trauma causes digestive disease and why forgiveness can literally heal the body. Dr. Bulsiewicz shares his personal journey into spirituality, his emotional reconciliation with his father, and the remarkable experiences that followed his passing. If you've been struggling with unexplained symptoms, chronic inflammation, gut issues, fatigue, or are searching for a more whole-person approach to health, this episode may completely change how you think about healing. Inflammation is at the center of many of today's most common chronic diseases — but what if the real starting point isn't where most people think? In this episode of The Exam Room Podcast, host Chuck Carroll is joined by gastroenterologist and best-selling author Dr. Will Bulsiewicz for a wide-ranging and deeply human conversation about gut health, chronic inflammation, and the hidden role that stress, loneliness, and modern lifestyle play in making us sick. Drawing from his new book Plant-Powered Plus, Dr. Bulsiewicz explains why the gut is a central command center for the immune system and the brain, and how dysfunction in the microbiome can drive everything from digestive distress to depression, anxiety, and long-term disease. He also opens up about his own personal health journey — including burnout, weight gain, and metabolic illness — and how healing his gut transformed both his life and his medical practice. This episode goes beyond food to explore the science of the brain-gut-immune connection, the impact of chronic stress and isolation on inflammation, and why true healing requires more than just changing what's on your plate. If you've ever felt successful on the outside but unwell on the inside, this conversation offers clarity, compassion, and hope.

This episode is brought to you by Joi & Blokes, Fatty15, and Strong Coffee Company. In this powerful conversation, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, MD joins Ever Forward Radio to explore why true healing goes far beyond food, supplements, and exercise—and into the nervous system, emotional health, and human connection. Drawing from his new book Plant Powered Plus, Will explains how inflammation is driven by an inseparable triad of gut microbiome imbalance, immune dysfunction, and a compromised gut barrier, while also revealing how chronic stress, unresolved trauma, loneliness, and circadian disruption can prevent the body from ever feeling safe enough to heal. This episode clearly explains the gut–brain–immune axis, the role of parasympathetic "safety" states, why PTSD and trauma leave measurable signatures in the gut, and how practices like sunlight exposure, breathwork, meaningful relationships, and spiritual purpose are not "woo"—but biology. So, can we change the way we approach food and help curb this epidemic of waste? I'm joined by Carleigh Bodrug and Dr. Will Bulsiewicz to show us how a few simple changes can lead to a greener home, better health, and even a lower grocery bill.

They also discuss the various natural sources of probiotics beyond pills and powders, and how to use them effectively in a clinical setting. And the number is 30 - 30 different plants per week." - Dr. Will BulsiewiczDr. Will Bulsiewicz reveals the startling truth about our modern diet - 75% of supermarket calories come from just wheat, corn, and soy. Drawing from groundbreaking research in the American Gut Project, he explains why plant diversity is the single most important factor for gut health, with 30 different plant foods weekly being the magic number. From smoothies packed with varied seeds and berries to reimagined pasta sauces filled with herbs and vegetables, Dr. Bulsiewicz offers practical ways to transform your nutrition beyond the standard American diet where only 10% of calories come from plants.Beyond simply adding more fiber, Dr. Bulsiewicz explains the fascinating science behind why diversity matters - each plant feeds different families of gut microbes, which have unique "taste buds" and food preferences. By expanding your plant repertoire, you'll not only nourish more beneficial gut bacteria but also experience greater satiety, reducing hunger and cravings. This revolutionary approach to eating challenges us to be intentional about our food choices, prioritizing variety alongside whole, unprocessed ingredients for optimal gut health and overall wellbeing.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter

What is the best diet for someone with diabetes? Dr. Thomas Campbell shares his research comparing the DASH Diet and a whole food plant-based diet. Their effects on insulin resistance and blood sugar levels are then examined. Although both diets showed improvement, the participants experienced superior results while eating the WFPB diet. Dr. Campbell explains why when he joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast. In the Interview: Plant-Based Diet for Diabetes Management: The interview emphasizes the effectiveness of a whole food plant-based diet in managing diabetes, contrasting it with other dietary approaches like the keto diet, which merely suppresses symptoms rather than addressing underlying issues. Influence of Family Legacy: Dr. Campbell reflects on the profound influence of his father, Dr. T. Colin Campbell who co-authored The China Study, on his career choice in medicine, emphasizing that his motivation stemmed from passion rather than pressure. Challenges in Medical Nutrition Education: He highlights a significant gap in knowledge among medical professionals regarding diet and its effects on health, particularly in treating conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Social Norms and Health: Dr. Campbell discusses how social norms contribute to unhealthy eating habits, making it difficult for individuals to change their diets despite knowing the health risks associated with poor nutrition. Patient Education and Openness: Dr. Campbell stresses the importance of patient openness to dietary changes and the need for healthcare providers to engage in meaningful conversations rather than overwhelming patients with information. Dr. Barnard is the author of The Power Foods Diet. Topics discussed: Microbiome and Antivirals: New evidence suggests that the brain's microbiome may play a role in Alzheimer's. Vaccinations: There is a correlation between receiving certain vaccines and a lower risk of Alzheimer's, although vaccines can have risks. Dietary impact: A Mediterranean diet, which avoids saturated fats, has been linked to a reduced risk of Alzheimer's. Exercise: Regular brisk walking can help regenerate the hippocampus, which is crucial for memory. Antioxidants: Antioxidants, particularly vitamin E, may also play a role in reducing Alzheimer's risk. Omega-3 fatty acids: While omega-3 supplements are popular, there are concerns about their link to prostate cancer, suggesting a focus on natural sources instead. Berries and anthocyanins: Foods rich in anthocyanins, like berries, are beneficial for brain health. This episode is sponsored by The Gregory J. A serious addiction was sending Michelle Oberg to an early grave. But it wasn't an addiction to drugs or alcohol. Even though she was substantially overweight, Michelle just could not stop eating pizza. It may seem puzzling to mention pizza in the same breath as cocaine or whiskey, but for Michelle Oberg the addiction had it hooks in as deep as any that would traditionally send a person to rehab. The result of her out of control eating was a heinously inflamed body that was struggling to function. Her triglycerides and c-peptide levels were incomprehensibly high. Meanwhile, migraine headaches had become all too common along with painful gout flareups. At the same time her weight was spiraling out of control. Despite growing sicker and heavier every day she still couldn't say no to pizza. Then she finally hit rock bottom and began to climb out of a dark hole and began breaking the chains of addiction and shedding the pounds that had been holding her back. In an extraordinary story of what is possible, Michelle shares her journey of resilience with fellow food addict Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast. She found strength and success after she began to eat a plant-based diet. And today she is thriving. Her goal is to inspire others struggling with demons to dig deep and make the change as well. Key points discussed include: Personal journey: Michelle recounts her history with food addiction and how it intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. She discusses her initial struggles with giving up pizza and the support she found in an online group for food addiction. Transition to a vegan diet: As she worked on her food addiction, Michelle began to explore veganism and whole food plant-based diets. She describes how she replaced pizza with healthier options like chickpea curry and salads. Compassion and self-love: Michelle reflects on how she finds it easier to have compassion for others than for herself, and how this realization has been part of her healing journey. Motivations: Michelle shares her family history of health issues, including heart disease and Alzheimer's, which motivates her to continue making healthier choices. She wants to break the cycle of diseases in her family. Ongoing journey: Michelle acknowledges that she still has about 30 pounds to lose and emphasizes the importance of making informed dietary choices. She discusses her favorite foods and healthy habits that she has adopted, such as preparing a specific salad dressing regularly. — — SHOW LINKS — — Michelle Oberg IG: https://www.instagram.com/pizza_addict_to_vegan Website: https://pizzaaddicttovegan.blog — — EVENTS — — Dr. Bulsiewicz and Chuck in Miami Where: Dr. Barnard's Bon Voyage Bash Date: March 7, 2025 https://www.pcrm.org/events/bon-voyage-party-2025 — — — Free Athlete Nutrition E-Book https://www.pcrm.org/athlete — — BECOME AN EXAM ROOM VIP — — https://www.pcrm.org/examroomvip — — THIS IS US — — The Exam Room Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theexamroompodcast — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook X: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC — — — Physicians Committee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/physicianscommittee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PCRM.org X: https://www.twitter.com/pcrm YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/PCRM Jobs: https://www.pcrm.org/careers — — SUBSCRIBE & SHARE — — 5-Star Success: Share Your Story Apple: https://apple.co/2JXBkpy Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2pMLoY3 Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers.
