In this week's episode of Visual Intonation, we dive into the world of Christopher Emanuel Smith, a filmmaker whose journey from Florida to the bright lights of New York City is as compelling as the stories he tells. A former Floridian with a knack for avoiding "Florida Man" infamy, Christopher swapped gators for a camera and pursued an MFA from NYU Tisch. With a career that blends screenwriting, directing, and videography, he has earned his place in the industry, crafting visuals that captivate and stories that resonate. His current gig as a Senior Director at Condé Nast Entertainment has only sharpened his unique cinematic voice, a voice that has already captured the attention of major publications like Vanity Fair and GQ. But Christopher isn't just a director; he's a storyteller at heart. His goal? To create coming-of-age narratives that seamlessly weave together comedy and drama, stories that capture the awkwardness, beauty, and struggle of growing up. From his work on music videos and documentaries to his upcoming episodic series, Christopher's ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments places him in a class of his own. The silent storytelling technique he mastered with a 16mm Bolex camera continues to inform his work today, ensuring that every frame he shoots is packed with meaning. We also explore Christopher's ideal projects—shows like 'Atlanta' and 'Dave', which mix razor-sharp wit with emotional depth, and action-comedy films like 'Tropic Thunder', where humor and adventure collide. His blend of sharp social commentary and visual storytelling makes him a standout in an industry often overcrowded with cookie-cutter projects. Whether it's through the lens of a camera or the page of a script, Christopher remains steadfast in his mission to tell stories that matter, stories that go beyond the bizarre encounters of a life lived in Florida. Don't miss this episode of Visual Intonation, where we talk about Christopher's experiences, creative processes, and his exciting future projects. We'll also discuss his latest short film, 'Male Pattern Boredness', which follows a self-sabotaging musician on a hilariously rocky path toward self-discovery. Tune in to hear how one filmmaker is pushing boundaries and creating headlines that don't involve any alligators. Launched in 2011, Condé Nast Entertainment is an award-winning production and distribution studio that creates programming across film, television, social and digital video and virtual reality. Key Takeaways:Measuring DE&I with the “inclusion index” What Conde Nast is doing to promote inclusive leadershipOrganizational transformation vs talent managementThe importance of lateral agility Quote:“One of the big focus areas is what we're calling “lateral agility”. Because what we found is we've certainly moved the needle in terms of the improvement of leadership and management in terms of what would be called vertical leadership in terms of the leadership of their teams and really focusing on elements such as the quality of feedback and career development and how they're supporting their teams. And we've seen major improvement in that regard. But the area where we see the opportunity is that the most successful leaders are spending just as much time collaborating in a highly effective manner with their cross-functional peers.” - Kevin StapSponsorThe Talent Blueprint is brought to you by Beamery. Condé Nast Entertainment is not a new player in the TV and film industry. Formed in 2011, the magazine publisher's entertainment division has had a hand in adapting Condé Nast's content into shows and movies, including an article by GQ that was made into Netflix documentary series “Last Chance U” and a short story from The New Yorker into Robert Redford-starring film “The Old Man and the Gun.” But now CNE is looking to play an even bigger role in Hollywood. “What we're doing in film and television is a real, deliberate and intentional lean into our brands in a way that we haven't done before,” said Agnes Chu, the former Disney+ executive who took the reins of CNE as president in September 2020. Under Chu, CNE has hired a roster of experienced Hollywood heads to help raise the magazine publisher's profile in Tinseltown. That includes Helen Estabrook, an Oscar-nominated producer who joined CNE in March 2021 as global head of film and TV and joined Chu on the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast. Estabrook's charge has been to have Condé Nast's entertainment arm working more closely with its publications to identify articles, short stories as well as podcasts that can be developed and adapted into film and TV projects. “We're creating new systems of working so that we can work with them in the ways that they have all individual systems for how they work, for how they find stories or how they tell those stories,” said Estabrook. “It is one great production company, but in some ways, it's several different production companies because it's GQ Studios and The New Yorker Studios and Vanity Fair Studios.”

Condé Nast is on a journey to remake itself from a magazine company -- home to Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and more titles -- and into what new CEO Roger Lynch calls "a 21st century media company." The exact contours of what that looks like remain a work in progress. One aspect that isn't in doubt: video and the establishment of franchises is absolutely part of that vision. Condé Nast Entertainment now creates more than 4,000 videos a year, garnering on average more than 1 billion views a month (mostly from YouTube, Katzeff said). Now, the challenge is turning those views into franchises. "We haven't done a great job yet in taking that IP and giving it legs beyond print," said Condé Nast Entertainment president Oren Katzeff on this week's episode of the Digiday Podcast. "And that's no big surprise and that's no knock on anybody. For so long the magazine was the be all end all for IP. A lot of consolidation in the media space, it's about a lot of things but one of them is the opportunity to garner IP and monetize IP in long-form content. You look at Disney, HBO Max and Netflix who are spending $100 billion this year on long-form content, and we've only scratched the surface of that."
Apple's big week of announcements included some bargain prices on its new TV+ and Arcade video- and game-streaming services. In turn, I suggest that may be a source of headaches for competitors such as HBO Max and Quibi.. As well, last week I moderated a panel of executives from several smaller online video services (Condé Nast Entertainment, Whistle, Ellation, and College Humor's Dropout). We talked about what companies such as theirs need to do to thrive amid all the new big-name competitors. One big hint: be everywhere. And I talk about how. The next few months will see the business of online video move to a very different new level. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/davidlbloom/support

At his wit’s end and Ken’s insistence, he sees a doctor who’s stumped andrefers the couple to a specialist. To everyone’s amazement, Greg is pregnant.Shock, stress, and fear settle in, and Greg’s relationship gets put to theultimate test.Co-starring Chris Salvatore (Eating Out: All You Can Eat, Drama Camp, TheOpen Weekend), Paternity Leave poses a modern answer to the age oldquestion: “Are we ready to be parents?”About the Production“What Paternity Leave does,” co-writer Dustin Tittle explains, “is co-opt thetraditional family and some of its roles. There’s a total blurring of the linesand it’s easy to forget it’s about two men – it’s about two people.”“When I first read the script, I laughed so much,” actor Charlie David recalls.“It’s such a wild and fun concept… Obviously, we live in a world where theidea of having babies isn’t out of the norm – but two dudes doing it is veryout of the norm. And yet, it also largely mirrors the reality of where we are…looking at gay marriage and adoption and surrogacy. It’s very relevant.”Shot in seven days, principal photography of the film began on September 1,2014 – Labor Day – in Nashville, TN. A Taste of Armageddon. According to Elaine Benes, Tolstoy once said “War, what is it good for?” And while she may have been wrong about the source, apparently Kirk shared the sentiment. When the Enterprise was dispatched to establish diplomatic relations with a planet that apparently wanted no part of the Federation, Kirk and his crew found themselves casualties of a war fought through computers. The damage-free conflict—if you don't count the deaths from willing disintegration—didn't sit right with Kirk, and so he took the future of two worlds into his own hands by forcing them into choosing between full conflict or reconciliation. The outcome remains unknown. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Drew Stewart, and Eric Brasure to discuss "A Taste of Armageddon," the antisceptic nature of the war between Eminiar VII and Vendikar, whether civilization is worth saving if the people no longer see the value of life, and debate if Kirk has the right to make the decision for an alien society. We also discuss Vulcan wall-telepathy, the new Eminiar line at Uniqlo, and uncover the real origins of General Order 24. In our news segment, we discuss Robert Picardo's newly available house, TMZ accosting Brannon Braga to get the answer to a question the rest of us left behind in 1991, and take a behind the scenes look at Star Trek Continues with the help of Condé Nast Entertainment and WIRED. Obsessed: Star Trek Continues and the Mirror Universe. Star Trek Continues recently released their third episode "Fairest of Them All," which is a direct follow-up to the Original Series episode "Mirror, Mirror." It tells the story of what happened when the mirror landing party returned to the ISS Enterprise. The attention to detail in set design, costumes, lighting, and even framing of shots is so meticulous that it is easy to forget that you're watching something shot in 2014, not 1967. While the onscreen story is intriguing, what is equally fascinating is everything that happened offscreen to make "Fairest of Them All" possible. As fans watching from home, it isn't easy to get a feel for what goes into making an episode like this. But thanks to Condé Nast Entertainment and WIRED, now you can. Obsessed: Star Trek Continues is a five-part behind-the-scenes look at our return to the Mirror Universe. In this episode of Continuing Mission we're by Captain Kirk himself, Vic Mignogna, along with director James Kerwin and, from Condé Nast, Michael Prenez-Isbell for a first-hand account of the documentary project, the creation of the Mirror Universe story, impressions of the set, and why Star Trek is an obsession for the cast and crew of STC.
