Hiii everybody. This week on the show we are flipping things on it's head a little bit. I'm often asked about my story, my journey, my advice...so I figured it could be a fun opportunity to have my associate producer, Sarah Bockian, take the reins as interviewer and put me in the hot seat. Sarah joined the team six months ago at the start of the writers' strike, and has been working behind the scenes with me to help bring these episodes to life. She comes from the world of development and writers' room support staff, having worked on comedies and dramas for both broadcast and streaming. As this is her formal introduction on the show, she'd like the listeners to know two things: 1) she's available for staffing (and also Showrunners' Assistant and Writers' Assistant positions), and 2) she was super congested during the recording of this episode, and she's 90% sure her voice normally sounds less annoying. In this episode, we cover everything from my immigration to America, to egos at work, and the one set experience that still haunts me to this day. Key Takeaways: -Make your own opportunities, don't wait for them to find you -The most valuable business relationships are about depth, not quantity -The importance of holding on to your spark Thanks for doing this life thing with me! -C

“Horseshoe Crabs: How 350-Million-Year-Old Sea Creatures are Vital to Human Survival” is a award winning short film that played at the Science & Nature Film Festival. With the worldwide race to develop and manufacture vaccines came renewed interest in horseshoe crabs. These sea creatures are over 350 million years old and their blue blood has been critical to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Their epicenter is here in the northeast and they descend on our beaches every spring in the thousands. Although the bright blue blood played a vital role in helping to end the pandemic, their numbers are in decline. We spoke with some "local heroes" who have been protecting them, and went out into the waters of Brooklyn with elementary students to monitor and tag them. Numerous species, including humans, depend on horseshoe crabs and it's up to us to help ensure their survival. Playing on the Film Festival Streaming service later this month. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS). There is a DAILY film festival to watch, plus a selection of award winning films on the platform. Then it's only $3.99 per month. The playwright turned screenwriter talks about what it's like to write material based on real people for the FX TV series. "My job was to adopt 20-something Monica [Lewinsky]'s point of view… and so I wrote based on Monica's story, and then I had the incredible asset of Monica Lewinsky herself reading my scripts and giving me feedback, so I basically trusted that in the writing of it, the scripts would reflect on how Monica experienced it." Sarah talks about her beginnings as a writer and how it doesn't matter where you're from. "You need something that's good on the page; that's all you need. You can live in Idaho, you can live in Ottawa, you don't have to live in The East Village or Santa Monica… if you are in any position to be able to write, I do think that having faith in what you put on the page is really what matters." School is out; summer is here! On this episode of the WeCrochet Podcast, the team flashes back to some nostalgic memories of high school. Heather and Katelyn reminisce about who they were in high school and wistfully chat about that feelings of fun and silliness intrinsically tied to more youthful days of their pasts. Katelyn sits down to talk to Selin Kocalar of Woolly Wishes, a non-profit organization founded by a high schooler, dedicated to using handicrafts to heal Syrian refugee communities affected by war. The activism of Gen Z is an inspiration and, as Selin points out, there is no need to feel limited by youth. A true student-led organization, Selin details how Woolly Wishes began, accomplishments to date, and ideas for continued outreach in the future. By keeping their donation parameters accessible, Woolly Wishes is able to collect usable goods from a multitude of categories. From hats and scarves to toys and bobbles, they're set to put to use just about everything. While the focus is primarily on providing support to children in refugee communities, Woolly Wishes wont turn away those in need and will gladly provide supplies available to families as well. Selin and Katelyn discuss the best ways to donate, the most sought-after items, and how those interested can offer support. An all too familiar knitting crossroad - does one I knit a sweater or not. While sweaters can seem intimidating if you've never done one before chances are, once you've made one, it's likely you'll make another. On today's episode of the Knit Picks Podcast, Lee and Stacey do a deep dive into sweater construction. Whether you're new to sweaters or have been making them for years, you'll likely enjoy this "nerdy" sweater conversation. First they catch up by discussing what's on their needles. Both Lee and Stacey are making patterns for our latest Knit Picks Collections. Lee even shares her latest yarn substitution and talks about color selection. From pullover and cardigans, to seamed vs seamless, Stacey and Lee review the various styles and constructions of sweaters. Stacey asks the question - what does the word "sweater" mean to you? Is a cardigan a sweater? Together, the two ponder fashion philosophy and ask you to weigh in. In the second half, the two ruminate different sweater collars, sleeves, and shapes. Cowl neck vs. turtle necks, boat vs crew, and more, they define some terms to help clarify what you might see in a pattern. Stacey loves a good scoop neck where Lee prefers to adapt necklines for varying situations. Happy Knitting! Color plays a big part of any craft project. Whether you love picking out the color of your yarns but aren't sure how to use them or you struggle with finding the right color combination for your project, know that you are not alone. First up Producer Sarah and Heather reminisce about the old days when Producer Sarah and her mom would walk around craft stores getting inspired. Heather loves thinking about what's possible. Sara and Heather dive deep into colorwork. Sara explains Intarsia vs. Tapestry crochet - What they are and how to do them. Tapestry crochet is the more traditional word people use when they talk about colorwork in crochet. Specifically, it's when someone is using more than one color stitches per row. Some people refer to tapestry crochet as jacquard crochet or fair isle crochet; and Sara helps clarify more about these terms as well as what people mean when they say "float". Intarsia used when you're working in big blocks of color. So rather than carrying the yarn with you, for intarsia you'll work one ball of yarn for one blocked part of the pattern. Intarsia is used when say, you're working a big heart on a project. Sara also shares the secret to how to change colors smoothly and what tools could be used to help make your colorwork more successful. WeCrochet Magazine Issue 3 is out! Get your copy today. Heather and Kerry chat about their strategies to pick out colors for their projects. Choosing colors for a project can be intimating for some people but Kerry suggests staying away from whatever you have around, right in front of you, and instead make color choices that you'll be happy with later. From getting inspiration and Pinning them on Pinterest, to using a Color app, to utilizing contrast, to Kerry's favorite tone-on-tone method, there's something for everyone in their shared experience and advice. Heather and Toni from TL Yarn Craft extend the color conversation with some extra useful advice. With Mother's Day around the corner we thought we'd do a special episode of the WeCrochet Podcast and devote our whole episode to the celebration of moms, step-moms, grandmas, mother-figures, mentors, teachers, and all the strong people that have had an impact in our lives in some way! We're sharing stories from our moms, stories about your moms, projects for moms, and more. First up, Sara talks to her mom, Kay, the lady that got her started on her crochet journey. Grandma Anne taught Mama Kay to crochet when she was kid. Her first project was an endless granny square. Kay has continued to be crafty throughout the years and has even ventured into combining crocheting and needle felting. Next up, Heather chats with her mom, Kathy, about all things crochet, specifically patterns and projects that have inspired. Having come from a long line of pioneer families, crafts have always been a big part of Kathy's life. Some of Kathy's Crocheted Greatest Hits according to Heather are crocheted Christmas ornament snowflakes, crocheted angel tree topper, and a crocheted vest. We love our crochet community. We're so happy to hear about all of your moms, step-moms, aunts, grandmas and mother-figures. Our listeners called in to leave a voicemail with stories. Enjoy these great "Mom" stories from our listeners. I'm not crying, you're crying! Lastly Producer Sarah talks to her mom about her love for crochet! As a left-handed crocheter, Cathy likes to work on projects that are kind of mindless and fun and is a big fan of plant fibers. "Crochet has always been a friend." She recalls. We close with a word from Sara. One bright part of the weird period we're in has been having the chance to video conference with all of you and meet some of your kids. Many of you have been working hard at WeCrochet, while taking on childcare AND teaching, too. Watching all of you support your kids during these stressful times and handle everything with such grace and determination and kindness has been so inspiring. We're very lucky to work on a team of dedicated, thoughtful, and hard-working women. Happy Mother's Day to our team and to all of you! You are all doing a great job and you are so loved. Keep crocheting, and we will too! Because WeCrochet! Today on the Podcast: Sarah Heyward. If you've ever had an unexpected chance conversation, which truly changed the trajectory of your life and career (maybe you fell upon a creative project or a new community or a business mentor, agent, or coach), then you know it wasn't simply about being in the right place at the right time. Yes, there may have been some initial serendipity that fell in your favor. But for you to have experienced sustained success and satisfaction? A true transformation? Where your present and future look and feel nothing like your past? That was ... Luck Meets Preparation: And this, my friends, is what inner and outer Creative Direction is all about — both for your beliefs and your creative business or brand. Because here's the truth: Every one of us has experienced some stroke of luck (or grace) at one time or another. However big or small, there's not a person on the planet who hasn't had some moment of blessed happenstance. The question is not, "Why doesn't that kind of synchronicity happen to me?" The questions are ... "Why don't I notice it when it does? What's draining and distracting me? How do I make myself more available next time? Who do I need to be? Where do I need to go? What do I need to think, feel, and do? When an opportunity opens, how willing am I to put myself 'out there' and simply start where I am? When the going gets tough, who will I turn to? How will I keep going? What stories will I tell myself about what it all means?" A writer of Television, Features, and Fiction: Sarah's creative chops turned a chance conversation into a seat at one of the most coveted writer's rooms in Hollywood. Her work has earned not only six seasons of writing and producing credits on HBO's hit GIRLS, but also garnered a Writer's Guild of America award and the ability to pick and choose next projects. And while she's gotten to work with Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow, Tina Fey — to name only a few — she's just getting started. Even better? She takes nothing for granted and she's having a really good time in the process. Turns out it's not fame or fortune that's made the success so worthwhile. Listen in and find out what has. BRITISH SHORT ‘THE ADVENTURES OF WOOLLYFOOT & FRIENDS’TO WORLD PREMIERE AT DANCES WITH KIDZ Stop Motion Animation short for pre-schoolers making festival debut in Hollywood Los Angeles, May 22 - The British multi-award winning animation company Woolly Vision will present their new stop-motion animated short film “The Adventures of Woollyfoot & Friends”, an Official Selection in the 4th annual Dances with Kidz Festival, sponsored by the prestigious Dances With Films, on Saturday, June 10th at 3PM. Written and produced by Sarah Simi and Ed Hartwell and directed by Ed Hartwell the film tells the story of Woollyfoot, a loveable monster living in the wilderness who explores his environment and makes friends through music, dance and the discarded objects he finds in the forest. As follow up to their hugely successful comedy (stop motion animation) adult comedy series “nudinits”, the duo decided to take their unique product into the realm of children’s programming. Both projects are the brainchild of writer and designer Sarah Simi, who explains: "I came up with the idea of an entirely knitted world and thought it would make a great animation. So I collaborated with animator Ed Hartwell and together we have made these films.” Now in its 4th year, Dances With Kidz, part of Dances With Films, highlights films both made for kids and made by kids, presenting the most creatively inspired kid and family focused films on the indie circuit. “The Adventures of Woollyfoot & Friends” will screen on Saturday, June 10 at 3PM, at the Chinese 6 Theater, 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028. Tickets can be purchased online at www.danceswithfilms.com/kidz. Woollyfoot.com For more information contact Deborah Gilels, LA Media Consultants at 818-758-6509, email toddgilels@prodigy.net.
