In this Episode, number 96, we had a chance to talk with the new Managing Director of woom USA, the US arm of what I believe is the best children's bike manufacturer in the world. Full disclosure here, I am a part-time employee of woom, working with families to provide a powerful experience for children as they start a wonderful journey by bicycle. I was introduced to woom when a friend asked if I wanted to help at an outdoor event where we would be letting children ride bikes. I fell in love with the brand after seeing how it made the learning and riding experience so much better. So, yes, I'm biased but hopefully that didn't keep us from having a good interview. Episode 89 | Tracy and Peter have been doing the good work in bicycle and pedestrian safety for a long time. It is good that they can take the time to ride the long trips. The first on was from West to East across the country and that one is the subject of Episode 55 of Celebrating Differences. 2026 is the 100 anniversary of the opening of Route 66 from Chicago to the West Coast so it is appropriate that Tracy and Peter rode and wrote about it.Please subscribe and we'll let you know when we talk with someone else interesting. In this episode, I chat with Robert Martin, Head of Mobility at Jaja Architects in Copenhagen, DK, about the Mobility Pyramid - Its creation and application as a paradigm shift for thinking about city design and personal choice. We also explore how he, as an architect, got into mobility work, the relationship between architects, planners, and transportation engineers in building places that promote a culture of activity, as well as some of the projects Jaja is working on. He also reflects on the active mobility differences between where he grew up in a small town in Australia, then in Sydney for school, in Saudi Arabia for a 6-month work assignment, and then finally moving permanently to Copenhagen.Helpful Links (note that some may include affiliate links to help me support the channel):- Jaja Architects- Mobility Pyramid - Mobility diet video by UrbanNext- Robert's PhD Document (pdf download)If you are a fan of the Active Towns Channel, please consider supporting the effort as an Active Towns Ambassador in the following ways: 1. As per her website, brendacooper.com, Brenda guides women on how to easily elevate their confidence and self-esteem; which, ultimately transforms their relationships with themselves and others. One of the eight dimensions or pillars of wellness that I ascribe to is environmental wellness. “Environmental wellness is having good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being. It promotes interaction with nature and also creating an enjoyable personal environment (both in and out of your workspace).” (https://www.nnva.gov/2585/Environmental-Wellness#:~:text=Definition%20of%20Environmental%20Wellness,and%20out%20of%20your%20workspace). “When our personal surroundings are well cared for, clean and organized, we experience a greater sense of comfort and less anxiety. Being environmentally well enhances your personal health, and helps ensure the future health of our communities and the world.” (https://iwellness.uwo.ca/environmental/index.html) Rebekah Love-Bashorun is an environmental wellness warrior. She is the founder of Organize for Love, a wellness and lifestyle brand offering products and services that feel like therapy for your home. From Rebekah's perspective, organizing your home to declutter it—is akin to freedom. Her holistic solutions are intended to create a sense of well-being. Her work will elevate not only your space, but also your mood. Rebekah believes that “The biggest culprit that keeps us distracted & disconnected from ourselves and our families is clutter.” Through her services, she helps to re-create connection. Rebekah also believes that “Our past and present environment greatly influences our sense of self and overall well-being. Clutter is a culmination of culture, history, and family affairs to be released and organized lovingly.” Organize for Love aims to assist you with that release, in the hopes of creating a new legacy of clarity and improved overall health. She intends to transform not only your physical space but also your mental space. As an undergraduate, she majored in American & Ethnic Studies. She later pursued a Master of Arts in Cultural Studies, giving her a unique lens through which to evaluate the tech industry's progress on diversity, equity, and inclusivity. For new music, the latest Tiny Desk (home) concerts and more, sign up for the NPR Music newsletter, sent weekly: npr.org/nprmusicnewsletter Stephen Thompson | Sept. 21, 2020 We've been trying to make a BTS Tiny Desk concert happen for years now — even gaming out ways we might move Bob Boilen's desk far enough forward to accommodate the superstar Korean boy band's dance moves. In the end, it took a global pandemic — and the launch of Tiny Desk (home) concerts back in March — to make something happen. With BTS cooped up in Seoul, the group held true to the series's spirit by convening a live band for its Tiny Desk debut, and even arranged to perform in a workspace with a music-friendly backdrop: the record store VINYL & PLASTIC by Hyundai Card in BTS's hometown. Opening with this summer's inescapable "Dynamite" — the group's first single to hit No. 1 in the U.S., as well as its first song to be fully recorded in English — BTS leaned hard into the new track's celebratory, "Uptown Funk"-adjacent vibes. From there, the group dipped into its back catalog, seizing on the opportunity to showcase its quieter side while (mostly) staying uncharacteristically seated. The breezily propulsive "Save ME," from 2016, ultimately gave way to a full-on power ballad in 2017's reflective "Spring Day." The latter track seemed especially true to BTS's hopeful nature: Introduced with a few optimistic words from rapper and singer RM ("It's been the roughest summer ever, but we know that spring will come"), the song reflects on a need to wait out hard times, even as the weight of present-day pain feels oppressive. BTS had intended to spend 2020 delighting the BTS Army in arenas around the world, only to spend these last few months performing in isolation. Released on the last day of a grim season, "Spring Day" provides a nice reminder of what awaits us on the other side. We just have to get through fall and winter first. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Bobby Carter | June 16, 2021 From a rustic and retro-looking cabin on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, the band Men I Trust seized the essence of the Tiny Desk almost to a tee. The controlled, yet layered four-song set, bookended by tracks from 2019's Oncle Jazz would almost certainly make for a plug-and-play situation had it been behind Bob Boilen's desk. Men I Trust was initially the duo of high school friends Dragos Chiriac and Jessy Caron, before adding vocalist Emma Proulx in 2015 and recording the group's debut album, Headroom. (They expanded to a quintet for this performance, with Cedric Martel handling bass and Eric Maillet on drums.) The song "Humming Man," performed here, was its first official single as a trio and they never looked back from there. The band's style sways between rubbery upbeat electro-pop and the muddy pace evident on last year's "Lucky Sue," but generally hits that sweet spot for anybody looking to be cradled and carried by a vibe-y groove. The overdubs and reverb on Emma's vocals are stripped away here, leaving a deceptively endearing quality to her voice. The band told NPR that this set was one of its first times playing together after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 lockdown. "We reunited at the cabin, jammed and recorded our session," the members said via email. "We strived to capture the intimacy and coziness on sound and image. We hope you'll enjoy it!" Their "home," in this case, is The Foundry, a neighboring studio in North London. Declan is decked out with glitter, channeling a more flamboyant side of rock than I've seen from him before. He's still immersed in complex storytelling with characters on the fringes, alienated for reasons of class and politics. Three of the songs are from Zeros, his brand new album recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce. It's been a wild three-year ride since the release of his teenage smash debut What Do You Think About the Car? He's now 21 and leads a fiery, honed band that developed serious chops after a few years of touring; Isabel Torres (guitar), Nathan Cox (keyboards), William Bishop (bass), and Gabrielle Marie King (drums) all propel the songs of Declan McKenna. For his Tiny Desk (home) concert finale, Declan performs his best-known song, "Brazil," a tune steeped in politics and sports, and the enthusiasm has him atop a tiny desk in the end. Neil Koenig TV Producer and Journalist interviews David Roche, Founder of Independent Strategy. Neil Koenig comments: The great financial crisis that began in 2007 mostly took the world by surprise. And the main reason why so few experts saw it coming, says the global investment strategist David Roche, is that most of our existing tools for analysing how economies work are “useless”. He argues that fresh ideas are needed, building on insights drawn from other fields of study, such as quantum physics. He is well placed to make such a case, having forecast some of the major turning points that have affected global markets, such as the demise of the Soviet Bloc and the subsequent fall of the Berlin Wall, and the financial crisis that swept Asia in the late 1990s. David Roche grew up in County Kildare in Ireland. He holds an MA from Trinity College, Dublin and an MBA with the highest distinction from INSEAD. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and has a diploma in accounting and finance from the UK’s Association of Certified Accountants. In his youth he spent time in various countries, including a period in what was then known as the USSR. He says he fell into a career in investment strategy “by accident”. After a spell working for JP Morgan, he joined the multinational financial services enterprise Morgan Stanley, where he was Head of Research and Global Strategist. In 1994, after leaving Morgan Stanley, he founded Independent Strategy, an investment research firm which provides advice to institutional investors and governments. He often contributes to many top financial publications and is also a regular commentator on the BBC, Bloomberg TV and CNBC television networks. He is also the author of several books, including “New Monetarism”, “Sovereign DisCredit!” And “DemoCrisis”. For David Roche, “the first thing that's wrong with [conventional] economics is consensus thinking”. The traditional view, he explains, is that human behaviour is consistent, stable and predictable - whereas in fact it is “disruptive”. In this interview he explains why getting to grips with the baffling worlds of quantum physics and mechanics may help economists and forecasters to build models that better reflect the incoherence of today’s economic scene. Bob Boilen | March 25, 2021 The back of a van on a sunny day holding an acoustic guitar is a far cry from the usual setting where I'd see Buck Meek. More likely, I'd be in a dark club; Buck's intense electric guitar and backing vocals are a part of what makes up my favorite rock band these days, Big Thief. But here, home is Buck's Toyota Land Cruiser in Topanga Canyon, Calif.; Buck Meek is singing about the clouds and his favorite new word, pareidolia, which also happens to be the opening track to his 2021 album, Two Saviors. Pareidolia is, as Buck Meek explains, "this human instinct to put symbol to stimulus." He says, "I've been spending this time of solitude in the canyon here spending a lot of time observing the clouds and things" — in other words, finding shapes and objects in clouds and objects where none intended to exist and perhaps turning them into stories or songs or just letting your mind wander. The Texas native has a tender voice with a bit of a yodel and a resplendent way with words. After three songs from Two Saviors, Buck treats us to a new song written in quarantine titled "The Undae Dunes," once again drawing pictures in the sky, this time of rockets and perhaps an astronaut and a love, all from the back of a Cruiser.
