We're thrilled to have Dr. Mark Sinyor join us, a leading figure in the field, known for his extensive work on this very issue. In this episode, we explore the complex realities of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, emphasizing the importance of promoting life, hope, and recovery rather than focusing solely on suicide itself. From historical stigmas to current crises response strategies, you'll learn about the transformative potential of open conversations and humane interventions.Tune in as Dr. Bonta and Dr. Sinyor tackle the urgent need for population-wide interventions and more accessible mental health care, aiming to create lives worth living and a society where everyone feels they belong. Author and survivor of csa Shannon Molloy joins Madeleine to talk about his new book 'You Made Me This Way' and the story's and stars aligning that led to this being created. Part memoir, part self-help, part investigative journalism deep-dive in the taboo topic of male child sexual abuse, You Made Me This Way is driven by Shannon revealing his own experience of having been sexually abused as a young child, and his grappling to understand how this has shaped him. And in doing so, gives voice to a shared trauma of sexually abused men in an attempt to understand the traumatic long-term effects of male child abuse and the way in which society supports (or doesn't support) survivors. The majority of men sexually abused as children never speak about their past and hide their shame and trauma away, forever carrying an enormous burden on their own, often with terrible consequences. I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity to speak with Shannon, and to read this amazing book. Jess has created an online platform to remove shame and stigma from discussions of sex and intimacy for all. Her platform provides amazing information and education on sexual education. What even is our definition of sex?! Jess details an abuse she was subjected to as a child, and we really dive into the societal norms around this in the environments we were in as growing youth. Jess and Madi also go into what moving into sex, intimacy and pleasure may look like moving past trauma. Whether that be self pleasure, options for sex with a partner and the services available for those who still find sex and pleasure as a barrier post abuse and trauma.Connect with Jess Instagram Linktree Dispea - Short and Sexy Audio Stories Connect with Reclaim Me / Madeleine HeatherReclaim Me LinktreeVia the above link you will find the Survivor Support Network & MERCH!! Content warning: This series includes graphic descriptions of sexual violence. If you or anyone you know is experiencing sexual violence and abuse, help is available. Please see resources below.Victoria, British Columbia[Part 1 of 2] In this two-part series, we explore Kelly Favro's harrowing journey from surviving a two-hour sexual assault to becoming the first person in British Columbia to have a publication ban removed from her name - by herself.Publication bans are routinely ordered to protect the privacy of vulnerable participants in the criminal justice system. But in the case of sexual assault complainants, what if they didn't actually consent to the publication ban? What if they don't want it?What happens when publication bans backfire?Along the way, Kelly met many other sexual assault survivors and learned that she was not alone. You'll also hear the stories of Jade Neilson and Samantha Geiger, two survivors who discovered publication bans had been put on their names without their consent, and how it impacted them in completely separate but negative ways.It all culminated in a trip to Parliament Hill in Ottawa to fight for changes.--------------------------------Special thanks to Kelly Favro. Please help sexual assault survivors Sign the petition now to give victim-complainants more agency and choice when it comes to publication bans on their names.Eligibility: Citizens and residents of Canada are eligible to sign the petitionDeadline: 9am EST on March 10th, 2023Follow on twitter: @AmendPubBanLaws More information:See the page for this episode at www.canadiantruecrime.ca/episodesResources for Sexual Violence and Abuse:REES Community - Canada Sexual Assault Centres by province or postal codeEnding Violence Canada - Sexual Assault Centres, Crisis Lines and Support ServicesListen ad-free and early:CTC premium feeds are available on Amazon Music - included with Prime, Apple Podcasts, Patreon and Supercast. The message that needs to go viral. After mentioning being a victim of childhood sexual abuse in Episode one, Jayna received far too many messages from women who shared similar experiences. Today, Jayna finally takes the microphone to share the full story. This story is her own but isn't just about her, it's so much bigger. it's time to open the doors and let some light shine on the girls who have been hidden alone in the darkness. With 80% of women experiencing sexual assault before the age of 25, this issue is far too common. It's heavy and hard to talk about and will be equally as hard to hear, but the silence isn't helping anyone except the abusers. If you or someone you love has survived sexual abuse we encourage you to talk to someone. You are not alone, we believe you and we support you. We are not healthcare professionals and are not authorized to offer professional advice, but we are happy to listen and offer resources to help support you in your healing journey. Max is a speaker passionate about instilling self-respect in young men through thoughtful romantic interactions and personal development. He draws on more than 20 years' experience and witnessing the mistakes repeatedly made by young men when interacting with women. Over the years, Max realised that young women frequently discuss these issues between themselves, but they were rarely talked about among young men. Given this divide in education and peer learning, it became clear to him that simply telling young men “no means no” is insufficient in the real-world. Max believes that avoidance of difficult topics and the premise of a well-raised boy “figuring things out” is inadequate. 10 Ways to Cope with Holiday Grief*Note: Because grief is intensely personal and unique, you may or may not experience any of these. If you feel that your grief is manifesting in a different way or that you need to talk to someone, then don't delay.1. Be prepared for some sad moments or memories. You don't need to be looking for them, but when and if they show up, give them the time you need to process them.2. If you are worried about having too much time to overthink your losses, fill some of your empty holiday holes with good things.3. Honor and celebrate old traditions and memories.4 Be intentional about creating new traditions and memories.5. Identify and expand your best coping skills.6. The sixth and final episode in the first series of our podcast A World Where LivingWorks is “Behind Crisis Lines”. This episode takes a look at the people and practices behind crisis lines and suicide intervention support services. Who are the voices at the other end of the line? What training and support do they receive to be there for people in distress? And how have these organisations put processes in place to take care of themselves and each other? Host Kim Borrowdale talks to Joe Ball, CEO of Switchboard Victoria, Australia, and Shari Sinwelski, Vice President of National Networks, Vibrant Emotional Health and Deputy Director, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the United States. Switchboard is a suicide prevention organization that provides peer-driven support services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, intersex, queer, and asexual LGBTIQA+ people, their families, allies, and communities. Vibrant Emotional Health administers the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the US with funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The aim is to provide 24/7 support to anyone in emotional distress or suicidal crisis in the US through a network of crisis centres across the country.
