Dr. Morgan Cutlip is back—and this episode might just change everything about how you see your relationship. In one of Ginny's favorite conversations ever on the podcast, Morgan dives into the real reasons marriage shifts so dramatically after kids. Her new book The Better Share brilliantly names what so many couples experience but can't quite articulate: the invisible weight of the mental, emotional, and physical labor that moms often carry alone. From party balloons to Costco water bottles, Morgan and Ginny unpack everyday moments that represent something much deeper—why moms are overwhelmed, why resentment creeps in, and why it feels like everything has changed. But this isn't a book—or an episode—about blame. It's about breakthroughs. Morgan shares practical language, frameworks, and scripts to help couples finally get on the same team again. If you've ever wondered why you're carrying so much or how to get real help (without another argument), this episode is for you. It's laugh-out-loud relatable, deeply validating, and packed with hope. "The mental load" is a big term getting a lot of attention these days because it's an important component to healthy, happy relationships. Clutter can feel like one big "to-do" list, and if we shoulder the responsibility for dealing with it by ourselves, it's recipe for resentment and disconnection in our relationship. Feeling buried under the invisible weight of family life? You're not alone. Dr. Morgan Cutlip joins us for a raw, honest conversation about the unspoken reality of marriage after children. This conversation tackles the infamous "mental load" – that seemingly endless running to-do list. Dr. Cutlip brilliantly breaks it down into three overlapping domains: physical tasks, mental planning, and emotional labor. The "triple threat" tasks requiring all three simultaneously explain why parenthood can feel so depleting. And yes, she confirms, this directly impacts desire and intimacy in ways other mental load discussions rarely address. What sets this discussion apart is the practical hope it offers. Rather than falling into what Dr. Cutlip calls the "hardship Olympics" where partners compete over who has it worse, she offers tools to break cycles of resentment that trap many couples.Dr. Cutlip's upcoming book "A Better Share" promises a refreshing approach that views couples as teammates against the impossible standards of modern parenting rather than opponents. For anyone feeling lost in the fog of early parenthood or wondering if their relationship struggles are normal – this conversation offers validation, practical tools, and most importantly, the assurance that you can find your way back to connection.Pre-order Dr. Morgan Cutlip's book "A Better Share: How Couples Can Tackle the Mental Load for More Fun, Less Resentment and Great Sex" available April 8th, 2025, wherever books are sold.Follow Morgan @drmorgancutlip --------This episode is sponsored by Feast and Fettle Use code GATHER25 for $25 your first week of professional chef meals delivered straight to your door!

We are in for such a fun conversation today with Dr. Morgan Cutlip, author of A Better Share: How Couples Can Tackle the Mental Load for More Fun, Less Resentment, and Great Sex, which is out April 8. In today's episode, Morgan teaches us why understanding the mental load is so important to a successful partnership. She teaches us that the mental load is comprised of three parts—physical, cognitive, and emotional, and we talk about that, as well as the cycle of unmet needs, the PAR acronym and what it means for both men and women, and what the death spiral is in a relationship. We also talk about what the default partner versus the non-default partner means as far as ownership of a task, and so much more from this great book. Morgan calls herself a “lifelong lover of all things relationship,” and she has worked in the field of relationship education for over 15 years alongside her dad, Dr. John Van Epp, who is the founder of Love Thinks and the developer of multiple relationship education courses that have been taught to over one million people worldwide. Morgan is also the author of the 2023 book Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself: 5 Steps to Banish Guilt and Beat Burnout When You Already Have Too Much to Do, and she earned a master's degree in human development and family science and a doctorate in counseling psychology. She's also just so easy to talk to and so much fun. Let's talk about that feeling. The one where you're managing doctor's appointments, school events, birthday gifts, grocery lists, carpool logistics—and yet somehow, it still looks like you're "just" staying on top of life. But under the surface? It's heavy. It's exhausting. It's invisible. In today's conversation, I sat down with Dr. Morgan Cutlip (yes, again—and you'll see why!) to talk about her brand-new book A Better Share and how we can finally name, understand, and redistribute the mental load many of us carry. We dive deep into what the mental load actually is (spoiler: it's more than just remembering appointments), how it shows up in your everyday life, and how to finally start conversations with your partner that don't end in frustration or tears. Even if you feel like you've already "tried talking about it," this episode offers powerful reframes, practical scripts, and gentle encouragement to keep going—because you deserve a life that doesn't constantly feel like one giant to-do list. In this episode, we chat about: Why "just tell me what to do" misses the mark in partnerships The 3 overlapping types of tasks that make up the mental load (and why they're so hard to delegate) The hidden cost of emotional labor in motherhood What to say when your partner gets defensive (and how to prep for the convo so you don't spiral) How to ask for appreciation (and why that's not needy—it's necessary!) If you've ever felt like you're carrying too much—and no one quite sees it—this episode is a must-listen.

Experiencing a significant loss or trauma often leads to an identity crisis, a sensation comparable to losing footing on solid ground. You may suddenly feel untethered, as if the person you once knew as "you" has evaporated, replaced by an unfamiliar stranger. Your faith may seem hollow, your relationships distant. It's like you're lost in your own life, and you don't know how to get back.  Our guests this week share how they coped with grief and hardship, and how they found their way back from feeling disoriented and disconnected from themselves. Dr. Morgan Cutlip looked forward to motherhood, but was quickly faced with the real struggles that come alongside it, and made it her life's work to help mothers cope with that loss of self, and show them how to remember who they are again.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Dr. Lee Warren Upcoming interview: Herman Mendoza Operation Christmas Child Jesus Listens for Advent & Christmas Reba McEntire Not That Fancy   Ed Young Lisa Young Fellowship Church AA [Alcoholics Anonymous] COVID A Path Through Pain   Dr. Morgan Cutlip Philippians 4:8 NIV Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself   Interview Quotes “Through that pain [of losing our daughter], God just surrounded us with His indescribable love. It seems distant at times, but it's ever-present because of His Presence in my life.” - Lisa Young  “I think that we're in a society right now that is like, ‘Feelings are facts,' and they're just not. We put a lot of emphasis on feelings, but feelings are signals. Feelings are a warning bell that are calling you to tune in to you and say, ‘What's going on with me?'” - Dr. Morgan Cutlip “I just stay in conversation with God all day. I feel like it's a running dialog, and this really is what helps me in so many ways of feeling like I'm never really alone. I am in a relationship with Someone who knows me deeply, who loves me, who doesn't give me more than I can handle; who I can turn things over to.” - Dr. Morgan Cutlip ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Today's guest is Dr. Morgan Cutlip. She holds a PhD in Psychology and is a highly sought after relationship expert, content creator and writer whose most recent book Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself helps women to mother themselves the way they mother their kids and reclaim their own voice.  I wanted to bring Morgan on because, to reiterate, I think we've set up a system that isn't putting Moms in a position to succeed. They are expected to be everything to everyone--of course there's burnout and a feeling of failure in all areas. Morgan provides a path to see that motherhood isn't a restriction to your life and creativity, but rather, can be an expansion. From this conversation you'll learn: How to navigate the journey of motherhood without losing yourself  How to go from dream to releasing your creative project Why it's important to mother yourself as you would mother your children How to let go of the dream of balance and STILL find a way to have a full life Why it's possible AND Probable for moms to still have their great creative renaissance and unleash after birth How to regain your creative juice, post-baby How to deal with kids protesting your creative time What is required of a mother's partner in order to make mothering not feel impossible Why Motherhood is an expansion not a restriction  And Much More! -Remember to subscribe/follow the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. This episode is for moms who are drowning in this season. After years of rarely talking about parenthood on this show, this topic suddenly continues to find me. I'm not sure if this because of my kids' ages (11 & 13) or just the season I'm in, but motherhood is something I want to talk about more now than I did when the kids were young.  My guest today is Dr. Morgan Cutlip, a highly sought after relationship expert, who has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Dr. Morgan has been a featured relationship expert with Good Morning America, Teen Vogue, and The New York Times. Her new book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, is out now. Dr. Morgan and I talk about motherhood as an identity and the mental load of parenting that so often falls more heavily on women. We also discuss how that affects our mood, our partnerships and sex drive. I even share a real life example of this dynamic happening in my home right now. If you've been carrying the mental load in your family, I hope this conversation resonates with you and that you'll know you're not alone.  LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. MORGAN CUTLIP HERE FOLLOW DR. Dr. Morgan Cutlip is back on the show today. She first joined us for episode 162. Today we are focusing on how we take care of ourselves as mothers; how do we feel good inside motherhood? So many of her answers spoke directly to both of us.In her upcoming book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, Dr. Morgan explains three core concepts moms face. She chats with us about these concepts including what we can do to help ourselves with the conflict of sacrificing our own identities in motherhood. We also discuss the core concept of idealization of motherhood and how intense our standards are on ourselves as parents. Ever feel like your needs aren't being met by your partner when it comes to sharing the load? Do you ask them for help but it never seems to go anywhere? Dr. Morgan shares actionable steps we can take when our own needs are not being met. She talks about how we can best manage all of our commitments and why that means we can't be 100 percent committed to everything at once. If the HERself podcast has made an impact on your life we would love it if you could help us in return.
