Here are just a few of the quotes and resources featured in the article, “The Power of Podcasting,” in my alumni magazine, Macalester Today: https://www.macalester.edu/news/2022/04/the-power-of-podcasting.Podcasting officially became a thing when Adam Curry began sharing audio recordings of his everyday life in 2004. Many people consider his podcast, Daily Source Code, as the first podcast. But many listeners began seriously listening to podcasts ten years later when Serial, a true crime podcast, first became available in 2014.51% of Americans over the age of 12 listened to a podcast in 2021 (Edison Research).32% of Americans listen to at least one podcast every month. There are about a million podcasts being created and distributed daily, weekly, monthly, or for a limited series (10 to 12 episodes).Because podcasts are portable and many episodes are moving or informative, podcasts can create a real intimacy between the podcaster and the listeners.Podcasting has the power to deliver exceptionally good stories. Many of the most listened-to podcasts feature stories. That’s why podcasts of novels and works-in-progress can generate such large audiences and dedicated fan groups. If you are a novelist, you should be podcasting your stories as you write them (or podcast previous novels, one page or one chapter at a time).Audio communication fills a unique niche for people, with podcasting in particular lending itself to engaging and deeply investigative storytelling. — Curtis Gilbert, correspondent, American Public MediaStudents find podcasting fun, flexible, and interactive. Plus, it’s relatively easy to do. … Podcasting helps students build digital literacy skills while learning to communicate information to a broader, more general audience, rather than a strictly academic one. — Tamatha PerlmanPodcasting, especially audio drama, gives storytelling a different dimension than TV or books. It’s an engaging, immersive experience that’s intimate, close, and allows you to be an active listener. If it’s done well, you don’t want to miss a minute. — Davy Gardner, curator of audio storytelling at Tribeca EnterprisesPodcasting is a step toward helping Global Teck Worldwide up our branding. One of the most eye-opening explanations of the Great Reset Glenn has ever heard comes from a former MTV VJ known as “the Podfather.” Glenn sits down with Adam Curry, the man who introduced Joe Rogan to the ESG movement and its role in the Great Reset. “I take the elites at their word,” he tells Glenn, as they dive into the terrifying realities playing out around the world, including in Ukraine. They both agree that something's off about the global response to Russia's invasion, and Adam has a shocking theory as to why. But he's tackling the problem in an interesting way: with his voice. From his humble beginnings on pirate radio in Holland to starting the first podcast in 2004, “The Daily Source Code” (which caught the attention of Steve Jobs), Adam tells Glenn the amazing story of his decades of experience as a tech media innovator. Now, he's pioneering a game-changing new way of podcasting that not only puts content creators first, but, he argues, solves the censorship problem so many are now facing. Adam Curry was one of the VJs (video jockeys) of MTV back in the 1980s. In this position, he “interviewed” some of the most popular musicians of the time including Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Adam is an early tech adopter and pioneer because he embraced the web and podcasting long before other people. He helped make podcasting “a thing” by collaborating with Dave Winer on podcasting technology, and he created one of the first podcasts, the Daily Source Code. In 2005 Steve Jobs previewed Apple's podcasting efforts by playing the Daily Source Code on stage at D, the most exclusive tech conference. It is a huge deal when Steve used a product like this. Adam also started companies along the way that offered services such as web design, video-sharing, incubation, and podcasting. He currently co-hosts the No Agenda podcast with John Dvorak. Get ready for another great interview on Guy Kawasaki's Remarkable People podcast!

Portmanteau

This one has to be done if not for anything, the meta aspect of things. Podcast - "iPod" and "Broadcast"... Or is it? Ben Hammersley original accidentally coined the term podcasting in an article as he explains on the BBC program Radio Four in 4.   So where do we get the portmanteau of iPod and Broadcasting from a made up word? It is a backronym - another portmanteau - and the meaning is under some dispute.   A little history. In 2000 Dave Winer drafted the Real Simple Syndication (RSS) standard to .92 and added the "enclosure" element that passes along a path to a media file. This ultimately led to different podcasts but most credit Adam Curry of putting together all of the elements needed - RSS, scripting, and actual audio content for his show Daily Source Code. He is commonly referred to as the "Podfather" - another portmanteau. Adam Curry also created RSS-to-iPod in 2003 which enabled transfer of MP3 files from Userland Radio - a blogging platform - to iTunes. Then in June 2005 iTunes 4.9 included podcast subscription support bringing them mainstream. But the name and the meaning. What is that? The common accepted definition is iPod + broadcasting.   However, there is another option given by Tee Morris and Evo Terra in their 2005 book, Podcasting for Dummies. This is Personal-On-Demand Narrowcasting. Evo added "because I don't even own an iPod, yet am quite obviously a podcaster, I see no reason for the association to continue to be made."   The controversy seems especially fitting for podcasting as they are all about creativity and can be anything to anyone, so why not the word itself? Whatever you think Podcasting means, I think it is here to stay and I hope you continue to enjoy this one.   Resources https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast https://create.blubrry.com/manual/about-podcasting/history-of-podcasting-new/technical-history-of-podcasting/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p038m811 https://www.theguardian.com/media/2004/feb/12/broadcasting.digitalmedia https://books.google.com/books?id=6YOV4I-hslYC&pg=PA13&lpg=PA13&dq=Ben+Hammersley+evo+terra&source=bl&ots=dWMGw5cxNQ&sig=ACfU3U1FQmfqTQvVLHCMZz2O_Rw9c0Jr-Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiPoI6P4NrjAhVlUt8KHYw8BIgQ6AEwDnoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=Ben%20Hammersley%20evo%20terra&f=false

In 2015, the Electronic Frontier Foundation successfully petitioned the US Patent and Trademark Office to invalidate parts of Personal Audio, LLC’s patent, arguing that they were not the first to invent a “system for disseminating media content representing episodes in a serialized sequence.”-For example, in 2011, a jury awarded Personal Audio $8 million from Apple over a patent on downloadable playlists. But the podcasting patent itself became particularly notorious after Personal Audio sued comedian and radio show host Adam Carolla over his podcast The Adam Carolla Show in 2013. “How could a patent issued in 2012 cover podcasting, a technology that's been around since 2001?” asked Dave Winer, who is sometimes billed as the co-creator of podcasting technology.-Carolla raised nearly half a million dollars from outraged fans for legal representation, only to reach a settlement with the patent holder about a year later. Since the settlement could not stop Personal Audio from suing other podcasters in the future, the EFF went to the patent office itself to invalidate the patent.-The Federal Circuit upheld the patent office’s decision to invalidate five key claims in the podcasting patent. The court agreed that earlier academic publications describing online broadcasting by CNN and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation not only “anticipated” the claims being made in the patent, but also showed that the claimed invention was too “obvious” to warrant protection.https://www.eff.org/press/releases/eff-wins-court-ruling-upholding-invalidation-bad-patent-threatened-podcasters We discuss “Show Promotion Strategies”-Building reputation in related online discussion / social media communities-Communities exist all over the Internet: Facebook Groups, Reddit Subreddits, Google+ Communities, and more. Jason Heath is a freelance double bass player who started his Contrabass Conversations podcast way back in 2007, nearly 10 years ago. Now with well over a million downloads, Jason's incredibly popular podcast is the Internet's most comprehensive resource on all people and topics related to life and music around the double bass. This month, we're going to be exploring the world of music podcasters and entrepreneurs, starting with Jason Heath, who has I believe the longest running classical music podcast show around, nearly 10 years running, with over 250 episodes and well over a million and a half downloads at the time of this broadcast. An interesting historical sidenote: former MTV VJ Adam Curry is credited with being one of the initial pioneers of podcasting, and launched what many believe to be the first podcast show produced on a regular basis, Daily Source Code, back in 2004. Podcasts are essentially “radio shows” that you can listen to either directly on a web page or on a smartphone or MP3 player. The beauty of podcasts is the fact that anyone can produce and distribute their own shows. This can be an inexpensive, yet powerful way to get your name out, reach a worldwide audience, and connect with the movers and shakers of whatever musical niche you're passionate about. For Jason Heath, podcasting has been a way for him to do all of those things and more, enabling him to extend his freelance double bass career far beyond what's normally possible. On this week's podcast we've got News, Crosstalk, a Gear Review, Viewer Mail and we tweak The Stupid Knob! This week Mike is relaxing in Cabo and Slau is sitting in as guest host. Slau is a New York City-based singer/songwriter and producer. During his teenage years, he developed his performance skills as a multi-instrumentalist while performing with various folk ensembles and dance bands. His reputation as a versatile musician led to an early career as a session musician for television scores as well as commercial jingles and underscores. Slau's songwriting has been recognized by Musician Magazine where he was a semi-finalist in the Best Unsigned Band Contest and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Songwriters Workshop. He's been a featured performer at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Showcase and has been a regular contributor to the New York City Songwriters Circle and The Bitter End. In 2005, the new media world of podcasting rallied behind one of Slau's tunes entitled If Every Day Were Christmas, a song co-written with Orlando Pagan. Former MTV VJ, Adam Curry, heard the song, played it on his podcast, The Daily Source Code and came up with the idea of a We Are the World-type benefit. Over 50 artists from 9 countries took part in Podsafe for Peace, a benefit song for UNICEF produced by Slau. It remains in the Top 10 most played songs in the podcasting world and has been played on satellite and terrestrial radio including Sirius, XM, BBC, CBC and Westwood One. Currently, Slau is working on a follow up to The Weight of Words, his 2001 debut album. The new album is scheduled for release in the spring of 2008. People have asked me "Should I write down what to say on a podcast?" When they ask this they mean every word. This is NOT the way to go. I talk about a podcast that is the EXACT content I'm looking for and I CAN'T LISTEN as the podcaster is reading a book. Most podcasts are one side of a two-way, time-shifted, conversation. Do you read what you are going to say when you call your Mom? Instead, map out your ideas on note cards, or use software like Microsoft Word, or notepad, to make bullet points. This enables you to create the free flowing, natural sounding conversation based on the bullet point. We recorded Live From the Formosa Tea House: Session Five this afternoon over lunch. The focus of this episode was on Zap Your PRAM 3, the next incarnation of the Zap Your PRAM conference we organized in the fall of 2003. Zap3 is running February 16 to 19, 2006 in Cavendish, PEI; details forthcoming shortly on the new Zap3site. There is, alas, an annoying bit of electrical interference that runs throughout the episode — it’s most noticeable at the beginning. I tried various methods for filtering it out, but they all made Dan, Steven and I sound like drunken fish. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll hear: 00:00 — The intro and extro stingers are from Royalty Free Music. 00:15 — We start off with a somewhat dorky and stilted introduction to Zap Your PRAM (early-episode dorkitude seems to stike us every time). ...My cup of tea...

Music: On A Podcast / Cruisebox SUMMERTIME / Brother Love 曲はまたpodsafe music networkから紹介。 "On A Podcast"といういかにも狙った曲名を前に発見していて、かける予定でしたがアダム・カリーがDaily Source Codeの中で、すでにバシバシかけてしまいました。まあ、アダム・カリーも歌詞に出てくるくらいですからね。 でも、同じ曲がいろんなポッドキャストでかかったほうが面白いと思うのでかけました。 そして、最後の曲もDaily Source Codeでかかっていた曲、"SUMMERTIME"をかけています。

Hello Again! Survivor moved to a new night and it was certainly a show full of surprises. The only thing we weren't suprised by this week was that Ulong managed to lose another challenge. :) There are a couple of operational changes to mention on our show this week too. First, I've been experimenting with the audio settings quite a bit lately, but I'm going to forgo the quest to eliminate the noise for now and just learn to live with that hissing sound in the background. I tried to remove it last week and didn't realize until I had already posted the show that it had some strange affect and created echos and some other audible oddities. We're going to switch the text portion of the update over to a slightly different format too. We aren't really getting any participation on the show :(, so I decided that I'll use this section to post the show notes, a brief guide to what we're saying when in the podcast. From what I understand while listening to Adam Curry on his Daily Source Code podcast, it'll be important to have this data because at some point in the future we'll be able to combine this information with the audio and be able to jump to specific sections that we want to listen to or just to support simple searching. Guess I need to go back and do this for the first few shows too.
