James Harper was the host of "Two Cents Worth" and Angel Sandoval was the host of the "Sales Rehab" show. The two shows focused on sales and personal development and actually competed against each other in a productive way. James invited Angel to be a guest on his show and a friendship was formed. Today on the show, Strategy + Action = Cultivating Happiness as an Entrepreneur Robert Peterson is on the show today and we have a phenomenal conversation around the idea of happiness and what it means to really have that in your life as an entrepreneur. If you're working for someone else, all of these same things apply, but we find that as an entrepreneur, it's even harder to cultivate at times because there doesn't ever seem to be a time to "switch off". Especially if you haven't established those boundaries yet and structured your business in a way that allows you to have that "off" time away from the business. Robert and his wife, Noelle have built a coaching practice around this idea of finding that core element of why you started your business in the first place and making sure that you bring that front and center and use that as a filter to make some structural changes around everything that you do in your life and business. And we're not talking about making the business the core thing in your life above family or other relationships. Quite the opposite. So often we start a business for the freedom it can provide and to be in control of when we spend time with those close to us, and then that's the last thing we end up being able to do. What Robert is helping entrepreneurs do is define that core reason, set that as the primary goal, and build their business and life around it so that it's protected and they're moving towards that on a consistent basis. In this episode we discuss how happiness happens clinically in the brain. We explain that the mind thrives on order. And everything that comes in your consciousness is evaluated relative to your goals. Things that support your goals make you happy. Things that go against your goals make you unhappy. Most things are neutral as to your goals. When something comes into your consciousness that is against your goals, it creates disorder. And the only way to restore happiness is to restore order in your mind. We give an example of how to do this. Additionally in this episode we talk about the legendary book "Psycho Cybernetics". It has a whole chapter on creating happiness. Which comes down to living in the now, not the past or the future. Happiness is a mental habit. People are about as happy as they make their mind up to be. Happiness is just thinking pleasing thoughts most the time and ignoring stuff that irritates you. You can't let outward events cause you to be unhappy. Having strong self-esteem and self-worth is the key to happiness. If you think about the past, only reflect on the good stuff. Transcript: Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life. I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and a Margin Maker in our monthly membership said this recently and it struck me. She realized she was creating margins for happiness. For what was fulfilling and purposeful to her. In turn, she said she's happier. If you have these Intentional Margins®, whether it's a buffer of time between appointments and obligations to take a deep breath and be intentional about how you want to show up, or a longer Intentional Margin to spend some time doing something that lights your hair on fire or feeds you. If you have Intentional Margin® it's a lot harder to be stressed out when we are running from thing to thing. I truly believe we can be busy and balanced, if we are focusing our time on the right things, our priorities, in this season. And, with the awareness that we can always pivot. I encourage you, like we do in the membership, to write down your Intentional Margin® for the day. It can be a walk with your dog, 30-minutes to gather your thoughts and journal or sit quietly. It can be 2 minutes to just reframe your mindset before jumping on a call or picking up your kid from school. All of these margins matter. Over time and combined, they make us happier. The last thing any of us want is to get to the end of the week, the end of the year, or god forbid the end of life and wonder what it was all for. Checking off the todo list of other people's priorities is going to feel really crappy if that's what we see when we look back. Psychologist Skip Rizzo conducts research on the design, development and evaluation of virtual reality (VR) systems targeting the areas of clinical assessment, treatment rehabilitation and resilience. This work spans the domains of psychological, cognitive and motor functioning in both healthy and clinical populations. Rizzo, whose work using virtual reality-based exposure therapy to treat PTSD received the American Psychological Association's 2010 Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Treatment of Trauma, is the associate director for medical virtual reality at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. He also holds research professor appointments with the USC Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and at the USC Davis School of Gerontology. Rizzo is working with a team that is creating artificially intelligent virtual patients that clinicians can use to practice skills required for challenging clinical interviews and diagnostic assessments. His cognitive work has addressed the use of VR applications to test and train attention, memory, visuospatial abilities and executive function. In the motor domain, he has developed VR game systems to address physical rehabilitation post stroke and traumatic brain injury and for prosthetic use training. He is currently designing VR scenarios to address social and vocational interaction in persons with autistic spectrum disorder. Rizzo is currently examining the use of VR applications for training emotional coping skills with the aim of preparing service members for the stresses of combat. He is senior editor of the MIT Press journal, Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments. He also sits on a number of editorial boards for journals in the areas of cognition and computer technology (Cognitive Technology; Journal of Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds; Media Psychology) and is the creator of the Virtual Reality Mental Health Email Listserve (VRPSYCH).
