We're not ending the show!If you read the title, got freaked, and immediately checked the show notes, let us assure you that the announcement isn't the end of Muses of Mythology. Since you're here, we'll give you the short version: The first ten minutes is the start of what was meant to be our Einherjar episode. Then we went off-mic for about 30 minutes to have a serious conversation about some challenges we've experienced recently and the show's future. We're not ending the show. We're not abandoning our journey into Norse mythology. However, we'll only be dedicating one season to Norse myths. We're going to spend the next few episodes covering the rest of the Magnus Chase books. Then we will restructure our episode topics, combining elements of Norse mythology into single episodes that we feel will best result in a quality listening experience. That's the big announcement. After that, we dropped in a 2022 Patreon bonus episode about A24's The Green Knight because we didn't want to leave you without a proper episode. It's a weird one. The energy is all over the place. We haven't felt like ourselves recently, and it's been really hard. But we're excited about this decision and the direction we're taking this season. Thank you so much for your patience and support. We're reworking the show because of our listeners. We aren't ready to end this adventure with you just yet. We'll be back in your ears on Tuesday, April 2, to talk about Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor. Until then, don't be like Zeus! About UsMuses of Mythology was created and co-hosted by Darien and DJ Smartt. Our music is Athens Festival by Martin Haene. Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then list out all the companion books, short stories, and illustrated editions we have so far, as well as analyze chapters 5 and 6 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:15) Karen and Kristen are throwing responsibility out the window forever! Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel debuted at #1 on Amazon! Daughter of the Deep jumped to #1 on the NYT bestsellers list. Sarwat Chadda is working on the next draft of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. We get a fantastic update about the Solangelo book. We're really excited to check in with other characters too. Kristen and Karen think they're hilarious. The Percy Jackson Disney+ show's writers room is back at it again! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting sounds great. We take a quick moment to shout out In Every Generation by Kendare Blake. Companion books, short stories, illustrated editions, oh my! (00:07:43) The Demigod Files includes three short stories, all of which sound great! We've read most of these, but it's been a while, so we don't remember them as well as we'd like. But Clarisse and Percy together is bound to be a lot of fun. (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) Oh, hey there, Charles Beckendorf! We get a wild Festus sighting, and we're so happy. How much did the Lightning Thief movie pull from “Sword of Hades” for Persephone's character? Don't forget, you can check these out at your local library! The Ultimate Guide is so much fun and a great collector's item. It's also very practical and incredibly useful! There is a cursed picture of Karen dressed as a daughter of Hephaestus for Halloween. We go off on a Beanie Baby tangent. “Percy Jackson and the Singer Apollo” is full of chaos, and we love it. Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods and Greek Heroes are SO PRETTY. Who HASN'T read Percy Jackson? Camp Half-Blood Confidential is another good pocket guide to keep on hand. Plus, there's the coloring book, with art by Keith Robinson. We only have the Lightning Thief illustrated edition and it's a TRAVESTY. John Rocco says there are no current plans to do more. Nobody would complain about more John Rocco art. Not to get ahead of ourselves, but we need a Percy Jackson Land at Disney World. We might have to do a whole episode on that idea. Let's dive into the Heroes of Olympus series now! We kick off with The Demigod Diaries, and “The Diary of Luke Castellan.” We'll be talking about this one in-depth soon! Hera is always messing things up. Ever heard of the bacchanalia? “The Son of Magic” was written by Rick's son! It's a fan-favorite. The Demigods of Olympus app might be long-gone. Time for the Kane Chronicles books! The Survival Guide is another awesome book to have on hand. Justice for Magnus Chase! Kristen will have to read the Kane Chronicles soon! The crossover short stories were a VERY BIG DEAL back in the day. But where's our crossover SERIES? Where's the Riordan Literary Universe (RLU)? And then Karen brings us all down. MOVING ON. We love Magnus Chase so much, and luckily there are some great guides for it. Einherjar is a very difficult word to say. There's always time for new books down the line! Did we…do a good job!? Let's talk graphic novels and why WE NEED MORE. Shhh, we're not allowed to have other interests! Chapter Reviews (00:38:13) Let's talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 5! Karen's living for Kristen's recaps. Everyone knows that feeling when your mom cleans your room against your will. Camp Half-Blood isn't a safe space anymore. Goodbye FOR NOW. Despite being “immortal,” it's so interesting how gods must rely on mortal worship to keep them going. We are not fans of Tantalus. Is Mr. D trying to comfort Tantalus, or is he giving him false hope? Can everyone please stop being mean to Tyson!? Are the other campers jealous of Tyson? We shouldn't be so cavalier about death. We are very happy to meet Charles Beckendorf again. We go on a Sponge-Bob tangent but Karen had to prove she has a brain. Time for chapter 6! BRAIN WORKS. Karen is very mad at Percy. BUT this is a good lesson for kids to learn. Karen was the annoying little brother. Lowercase pegasus versus capital letter Pegasus. Team Percabeth breaks up very quickly. Tyson gets a stick! Karen does not want to talk about the birdnado. Rick did Dean Martin dirty. Prophecy Count: 7 A lot has already happened in these first six chapters. We were feeling a lot of emotions today. And we have some feedback to go through! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 15, in which we'll discuss Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee and “The Initiative” from Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities. Minute Fifty-Four: From Odin's Purpose to Thor's Response Joining us today to discuss Loki's reaction to Frigga's comment about Odin's purpose, as well as Jane and Thor starting to figure their plans out at the SHIELD Crater Base is Scott Carelli, founder of Dueling Genre Podcast Network and host of Franchisography. In the fifty-fourth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We have a final bit of Loki & Frigga in Odin's chamber discussing Odin's purpose in banishing Thor, as well an extended/deleted scene to discuss. It seems like Odin's purpose was to intentionally ban Thor to Midgard to make him a better person. Loki doesn't seem happy about any of this. We discuss the deleted/extended scene here in Odin's chambers. The conversation is longer and covers the same points so we don't need it, but it's nice. They certainly make the Odinsleep seem more like a coma though. Is that what we're meant to see it as? We debate about the Einherjar essentially crowning Loki as king. It's a great scene but does it fit with the rest of the films as they exist now? How does this play into the earlier scene when Loki was on the throne? They clearly aren't using the story about Gungnir only being usable by Odin here in the MCU as they are in the comics. Loki feels less scheme-y in this deleted scene. He actually seems like he might be a good leader. Except for that last look. Again, it really seems clear that Thor would've been a terrible leader. We've seen Party Thor in What If...? after all. We return to find Jane and Thor arriving at the SHIELD Crater Base. We find some interesting moments of symmetry we have found in the film. SHIELD's set-up here sadly looks like a hamster cage. It feels like something from Agents of SHIELD. Sure, it seems like something that could be assembled quickly, but for what purpose? Couldn't they just walk around? And why is the area over Mjølnir under open sky? We try to delineate between the SHIELD agents, techies, and scientists. Does Thor know when he hears thunder that he's close to Mjølnir? Or is it because he's the god of thunder? Jane doesn't buy into Thor's promises like the Warriors Three and Sif bought into him earlier. It plays well. What was Jane thinking would happen when she got here? Loki's rankled about Odin's purpose, and Thor's cocky about his plans to escape from the SHIELD Crater base. So much to discuss! Tune in! Valhalla, also known as the hall of the slain is believed to be the Norse afterlife for fallen heroes in Scandinavian Mythology. In Norse mythology, it is said that warriors who lost their lives defending a cause would go to Valhalla, where they will feast with other heroes and Odin himself until Ragnarok comes. Valhalla was believed to be located in the grove of Glasir in Asgard, the real of the Aesir gods. The Einherjar was the name given to these brave warriors who went to Valhalla. According to Norse mythology, it's believed that upon their death, the ancient Vikings were chosen by Odin's Valkyries to become an army that will combat the forces of chaos at Ragnarok. Each day, the warriors would practice the art of Combat, slaying and being slain, only to recover by the evening after which they could feast altogether in the hall, with meat and wine of honey which never ran out. Although being often considered as the main afterlife for the Vikings, Valhalla was one out of the five realms dedicated for the souls. Another realm for the souls of fallen heroes would wait was Folkvangr, a realm governed by the Vanir goddess Freya (Freyja). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/afro-emperor-myths/support

Thor 029: How Much Shakespeare Can We Cram Into This Minute?

Marvel Movie Minute

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2021 37:32

Minute 29: From Old Man to Unworthy We have a special Shakespearean expert joining us for this minute of royal family drama. Dr. Jeff Wilson from the Harvard College Writing Program talks with us about Thor's Shakespearean connections and why it makes so much sense for Branagh to be directing. In the twenty-ninth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We dig into the Shakespearean elements that Branagh saw in this story that drew him in, notably the story of Prince Hal in the first part of Henry IV. That totally makes sense as his draw to this, not to mention some of the people he cast like Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston. Dr. Wilson felt that Branagh pulled it off and also heard that the actors and director walked around talking in Shakespearean shorthand on the set (which surely frustrated anyone not as familiar with the Bard and his stories). We discuss comparisons with Shakespeare's Prince Hal. Dr. Wilson also breaks down the story of Prince Hal, part of one of Shakespeare's two tetralogies, and explains the similarities for us in it. And apparently, Branagh gave Chris Hemsworth at one point the St. Crispin's Day speech and told him to come to set with it prepared to read. How amazing would that be to watch? When Hopkins and Hemsworth deliver their biting comments at one another, the Shakespearean training shines through as the lines are full of heightened and grand language. It's like verbal acid they're throwing at one another. What's amazing here, however, is how Hopkins pivots when Thor calls him old and foolish. The way he drops the anger and becomes almost pensive and thoughtful reflects the wisdom that comes with age. And isn't it funny that so many superhero films boil down to the Spider-Man theme – with great power comes great responsibility. Dr. Wilson schools us on the Mirrors for Magistrates as a genre in which leaders (usually princes) learn how to lead responsibly. And to that end, it also fits Screenwriting 101 as a character has to learn and grow over the course of a film. We discuss comparisons with Shakespeare's King Lear. We find out that Hopkins had approached the moment when he realizes his errors in raising Thor as a King Lear moment. So far, two Shakespeare references playing out in this scene! Loki's attempt at interrupting the fight brings up more Shakespearean references. Hiddleston's just so good in this role as he clearly is gaming things right now. We also find out that Hiddleston actually thinned down for this part to look more lean and hungry-looking, taking cues from Cassius in Shakespeare's stories. We even bring up Shakespeare's Iago. There's also references to Iago. Seriously, this is a very Shakespearean minute. This really isn't so much a battle between the old ways and the new ways as it is between wisdom and youthful eagerness. Thor may see it as the old and the new, but that's the view from youth. Thor finally pushes Odin to the brink and Odin begins stripping Thor of his ranks, telling him he's unworthy. This is a big minute. Odin calls Thor vain, greedy, and cruel. He'll call him arrogant and stupid. It seems Odin really has let things build up a bit too much, eh? Look at that! We bring up the film The Life of Emile Zola, definitely not Shakespeare. Branagh referenced the Dreyfus Affair from the film The Life of Emile Zola as a point of how a soldier gets stripped of his ranks. It's quite a ritual in that film. Not so much here, but certainly still involving a lot for Odin to have to take from Thor. To that end, it really seems more like an emotional beat (and to that end Shakespearean?) to have Odin make his decision and take action right here instead of bringing Thor back to Valaskjalf to strip him of his ranks in front of all the Asgardians, the Einherjar and more. It also is more Shakespearean to have this scene set on this threshold here as a key point between worlds. Inevitably, we bring it back around to Prince Hal. Dr. Wilson does point out how it's interesting how this story flips Hal's story on its head – here, it's Asgard where Thor goes to get his education. In Shakespeare's play, it's the reverse as he returns to the palace for his own education. And that comparison of Asgard as a pub kinda makes sense, right? The first thing Odin removes from Thor's armor are the top two discs of the six on Thor's chest plate. It's interesting to learn from this that these discs are actually part of the rankings, and now we want to keep our eyes out for other armor designs to see what sort of rankings we may be able to pinpoint. Dr. Wilson points out sumptuary laws that had existed in England at one point (as well as other parts of the world) that kept certain classes from wearing clothing or outfits from other classes. He also points out the fun that Joss Whedon was having with Branagh by throwing his ‘Shakespeare in the Park' reference in The Avengers that Tony uses to insult Thor. So great. And, of course, since it is Thorsday, we ask Dr. Wilson what his favorite moment is with Thor in all the films. It may involve essentially a play within a play. It's an intense minute of Shakespearean family drama, and Dr. Jeff Wilson's here to walk us through all of it. Tune in! Minute Twelve: From Odin's Destroyer to Odin's Truce Ashley Coffin from the MCU Podcast is joining us this week to take on the Destroyer. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the twelfth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Odin unleashes the Destroyer from behind his magical bars in the vault. He does it by again striking gungnir on the floor of the throne room. Why does this striking of gungnir release the Destroyer whereas before it just was something to silence the crowd? Doesn't matter because the Destroyer is awesome. The way it looks is so cool and pulls so perfectly from the comics. Plus, that hellfire that comes from its face? Intense. We talk about its comic origins and how Loki first used it against Thor. The Destroyer burns each of the frost giants to bits. Like literal bits of char floating in the air. Damn. Oh, and while it's doing that, we get a glimpse of the infinity gauntlet, which we later learn to be fake. And what is that in the nook opposite the gauntlet? Some sort of sword? Possibly Odinsword? The Destroyer sets everything right... for now. With a fade to white, the Destroyer retreats. It must've put the casket back on its pedestal because there certainly wasn't a cleaning crew coming through before Odin, Thor, and Loki arrive. But how much time does it take to get from the throne room to the vault? They arrive helmetless. Should they have kept them on just, you know, in case there were still frost giants? Or is the Destroyer that reliable? Or perhaps the production team just wanted to see more of their beautiful faces. They survey the damage. It's a bit confusing. Two dead Einherjar guards. But whose arm is frozen in the ice? Or is that a piece of a frost giant? Yuck. Thor says the Jotuns must pay for what they've done, and Odin reminds him they did pay with their lives. But Thor wants to know why they broke in and Odin reminds him they have a truce with Laufey. Loki just watches. It's kinda delicious how Hiddleston just plays it so silently. Great parallel to the first time we see Odin with Young Thor and Young Loki in here. It's a busy minute with the Destroyer's introduction and family conflict. Minute Eleven: From a Warlock's Eye to a Frost Giant's Fists Ashley Coffin from the MCU Podcast is joining us this week to talk about Loki and Thor (if we can just get past his eyebrows). Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the eleventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The Einherjar guards should be suspicious in Odin's vault. After all, the Warlock's Eye is watching them, Branagh is throwing them into another dutch angle shot, and there's a frost giant freezing the wall behind them. What's the sword opposite the Eye? Is it the Space Traveling Sword? Odin's ravens! We haven't talked about them yet but they've been in the film since minute eight. They're sitting ever so pleasantly on each arm of Odin's throne. We touch on their histories. It's time for Odin's oath, and clearly he's in a hurry because he's only just started but is almost done with the coronation ceremony. Maybe he just wants to get to the banquet? Odin runs through three questions for Thor, who gets more and more convinced of his own awesomeness as he says “I swear!” in reply. It's almost a surprise he doesn't throw moljnir in the air on that third one. Thor's wig. It's tough. So are his eyebrows. Which are worse? But Chris Hemsworth, amiright? Why did they do that to him? At least they learn how to make him look in later films. Does Loki enjoy what seems like Odin taunting Thor? Or is he thinking about what's going on downstairs? Loki's watching. In hindsight, we know why but it's interesting to look at what Hiddleston is bringing to his performance that's so subtle. Meanwhile, Odin once again seems to hint at his terrible parenting by stopping just as he's about to announce Thor as king. Is he taunting Thor by dragging the moment on even longer? Or is he seeing frost appear on the banners as was originally scripted? The frost giants don't care. They kill the Einherjar guards by freezing water, slicing them with ice swords they make on their arms, and just good ol' throttling them to death. What's with Odin's ability to sense danger? And is Loki worried? Okay, so Odin wasn't just taunting Thor. Turns out he's got Odin-sense with things happening in the royal palace (lest we forget, it's called Valaskjalf) and realizes frost giants are here. We never see a shot of frost in the throne room, so assume it's just his awesome connection to Valaskjalf. But why didn't his radar turn on when the frost giants first entered Asgard? Or Valaskjalf? They had to make it all the way into the dark cave where the vault is hanging from the ceiling and kill the guards before his radar went off? That doesn't seem like great radar. Doesn't matter than much anyway because the frost giants have honed in on what they want, and it's the casket of ancient winters. The three of them dash to it and pick it up. It's an oath- and action-filled minute today! We have a great time covering all of these elements and more. Tune in! Minute Ten: From One King's Speech to Two Guards' Patrol We have our first guest! We're joined by Ryanne Bennett from the Black Girl Nerds podcast joining us in the throne room to hear Odin's speech this week. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the tenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Odin continues his speech and Loki doesn't look too happy about it. What's up with that? Should we be reading into that more than we are? Odin seems like he's about to cry as he calls Thor his first born. Is he just overtaken with emotion or should we think that Kevin Feige was planning so far ahead that he knew the subject of Hela would come up later in the MCU? Odin has a nice little chat about mjolnir. Again, could anyone pick it up now? It doesn't have Odin's knot on it. Is there a reason Sif is giving Loki a bit of a dirty look here? Yeesh... those eyebrows... Meanwhile, in Odin's vault... Odin has what seems to be a typical royal speech. The cameraman's so bored he flies outside and down through a vent into the basement. Turns out, their basement is a giant spherical cave. But hark! What's with the funky architecture? A room hanging from the ceiling? I guess this is Odin's vault. Total comic book location that defies all logic. But yeah, it looks pretty cool. Inside, two Einherjar guards are on patrol. They pass several iconic Marvel relics – the Tuning Fork and the Tablet of Life and Time. Interesting that a lot of people initially thought the Tuning Fork was the Orb of Agamotto. Little did they know that it does, in fact, say ‘TUNING FORK' in runes on the wall behind it. Too bad you can only read it in a production still! More dutch angles leading us back to the casket of ancient winters. These shots paired with rather foreboding music could only mean one thing... trouble. But that's all we get in this minute! We'll have to wait until next week to see what's in store for these guards! For now, enjoy this minute of Odin's speech and the mysterious vault! Tune in! Minute Six: From Ice Attack to Asgard We have our first guest! We're joined by Ryanne Bennett from the Black Girl Nerds podcast this week. Check her and her shows out at the links below. In the sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Laufey smashes one of the Einherjar soldiers that he just froze. Not a fun way to go. Meanwhile, the battle rages on. Branagh continues putting us in the middle of it in close shots which feel chaotic and makes it feel like we're actually there. Unfortunately, it makes it hard to tell what's going on. But it's pretty easy to see Laufey form a spiked ball of ice in his lowered palm. He then hurls it at Odin, nailing him in his right eye. So this is different from the Norse mythology just a bit. Why the change? Well, it puts it in the action. Also, by keeping Odin in the battle instead of on a hill or something watching the battle play out, we do at least get a better sense of the type of king that Odin is. And Laufey for that matter. We definitely appreciate that they're willing to join the fray. So Odin can shoot fire from Gungnir. Who knew? The Asgard-Jotunheim war clearly is waged for a long time and Laufey and Odin are always in the frey. Meanwhile, the battle rages on from Midgard back to Jotunheim. It actually looks like a decent place. A tad cold, but the cities aren't crumbling. That being said, we do see bodies strewn on the distant streets. And who's that on the landing between the two towers? Turns out it's Laufey, Odin, and two Einherjar guards. Looks like Odin's won. He has Laufey on the ground at the end of Gungnir. Odin's about to kill him but seems to hold his spear for some reason. Considering the myths about Odin losing his eye were in relation to him wanting to gain wisdom, does this moment perhaps tie to the myths and show that Odin gains wisdom when it comes to war and see value in not being a bloodthirsty tyrant? Should we read into this as the change from the Odin who warred with Hela in Thor Ragnarok? The war is over. Odin takes the Casket of Ancient Winters from Laufey. So Odin doesn't kill Laufey. That being said, he does have his Einherjar soldier take the casket of ancient winters. But why does it look like it was plugged in? Does the planet start shutting down now? Did we need it to be so visually obvious? Meanwhile, Odin and his troops hop into the bifrost for a trip back to Asgard. Our second trip so far in the bifrost and it already is far less... atmospheric. They're heading back to Asgard. We assume it was the crystalline peaks but turns out, this is the bottom. Why did they decide to construct the film this way? It kinda throws you initially, but it looks cool. Especially when we flip over and move through the water to reveal the actual city. We don't get to see much of it other than the canyon patterned after Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park, but we do see some cool city buildings built into the wall of the canyon and in the distance... some sort of floating building? It's very difficult to figure out. But we like it. Laufey and Odin battle on! The epic Asgard-Jotunheim war comes to an end in this dramatic minute. Tune in! from Old Norse Valhöll "hall of the slain")[2] is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Chosen by Odin, half of those who die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr. In Valhalla, the dead warriors join the masses of those who have died in combat (known as the Einherjar) and various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, as they prepare to aid Odin during the events of Ragnarök. Before the hall stands the golden tree Glasir, and the hall's ceiling is thatched with golden shields. Various creatures live around Valhalla, such as the stag Eikþyrnir and the goat Heiðrún, both described as standing atop Valhalla and consuming the foliage of the tree Læraðr. From White Wolf Wiki: From out of the north they come, relics of centuries past but deadlier than anything that has ever sailed the seas. For even in the enlightened year of 1197, when true Vikings are just a bloody rumor of the past, there are still knorrs filled with true sons of Odin and Thor, waiting for a chance to loot, pillage and slaughter.Wolves of the Sea was written by Geoffrey C. The Fire Giants have come to destroy them all. Can Wylie and the others survive the coming battle and bring Ragnarok to an end before all that they fought for is lost? Everything that Wylie has faced since the dead began to rise has brought him to this. Now he must face the wrath of the architect of Ragnarok; the God of Mischief, himself. Mankind's final chapter will be written in blood. The Twilight of the Gods is here. RAGNAROK is NOW. ORIGINAL AIRDATE: January 16th, 1989 --- MacGyver teams up with the local police to track down a brainwashed escaped convict MISSION: MacGyver tries to convince the LAPD to adopt his new invention for busting down doors when he is swept into an investigation tracking down an escaped serial killer who seems to be operating under the control of a fellow prisoner and criminal mastermind. This week's highlights include: Here's that chat with Stephen Downing from the MacGyver Project. Valhalla (Religion) In Norse mythology, Valhalla (from Old Norse Valhöll "hall of the slain") is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Chosen by Odin, half of those who die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr. In Valhalla, the dead join the masses of those who have died in combat known as Einherjar, as well as various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, as they prepare to aid Odin during the events of Ragnarök.
