Kritika H. Rao, Shveta Thakrar, Roshani Chokshi, and Ram V are helping to create a new genre. They use elements of their Hindu backgrounds to write fantasy books primarily aimed at a Western marketplace. I talked with them about the challenge of drawing on a diverse religion of beliefs and gods that many Western readers and publishers might be unfamiliar with. Our panel discussion also turned out to be an opportunity for the authors to bond over their favorite deities, the Hindu comics they grew up reading, and the questions they've faced about who gets to tell their stories.  Roshani Chokshi writes the middle-grade series, Aru Shah, and she's the author of The Star-Touched Queen trilogy of YA novels. Kritika H. Rao is the author of The Surviving Sky, which will be part of The Rages Trilogy. Shveta Thakrar is the author of Star Daughter and The Dream Runners.  Ram V is a comic book writer, and the author of the graphic novel, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including various upcoming releases like Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem, as well as Chalice of the Gods. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 21, which is our first introduction to Aunt Kitty. Hey, she looks kinda familiar!? New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:00) Don't forget to check out Karen on Seaweed Brain Podcast! Are you going to one of the Chalice of the Gods book tour stops? Read Riordan wants you to meet Flordeliza from The Spirit Glass. You can also read an exclusive excerpt from Roshani Chokshi's latest novel. Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem releases on September 12. Chalice of the Gods also releases on September 26, and we give you an update on our plans for discussing the book. Kristen also gives us an update on the strikes and…Taylor Swift!? The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi (00:13:24) What is this book about? What did we think about the writing, and how does it compare to Aru Shah (the series)? You should definitely pick up The Last Tale of the Flower Bride if you liked this book. There are a lot of relatable themes in this book that we'll be discussing throughout this episode. We love a book with Graci Kim vibes! Okay, let's talk about Corazon Lopez, our hero for this adventure. Althea is awesome, but Emilio? He's the best dad EVER. How does Corazon compare to Aru Shah (the character)? Saso is undoubtedly the standout character in this book. Aunt Tina is super powerful and super suspicious. The Midnight Bridge market sounds like a spooky and amazing place to visit. You could say that Librarian Bulosan is a bit entian in nature. And then there's Leo (not that Leo!), who is super cute but definitely has some secrets of his own. Lastly, we have Flordeliza, who we'll have to talk more about later. Oh, and how could we forget to talk about the House!? The spoiler section starts at 00:38:57. Let's kick off this part by talking about the Library of Mirrors. Did you catch that Aru Shah reference? So we can blame mirrors for stealing our socks!? We get a proper quest for this adventure, and all seems right with the world. First stop? Visiting Mushu Tamatoa Bakunawa. We really loved how Corazon decided what was a fair trade for his blessing. Um, the manananggal is terrifying but also kind of cool? Next up, we visit the diwata and meet the Marias. The mystery around Leo deepens! Did the Marias purposefully send Corazon into danger, and were their intentions nefarious? Kristen totally knew that Corazon's dress was a clue to what was going on. We backtrack a little bit to talk about Flordeliza's backstory. Padre Francisco was, hands down, the worst person in this book. Did you guess the Leo reveal!? Okay, let's talk about the end of this book now. Aunt Tina is WHO!? The House ended up being so much more important than we thought. Ohhhhh, that's how the soul key was formed. This book really is about grief and acceptance. Saso just needs something to fight against! Would we like a sequel to this story? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:20:14) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 21. You do NOT want to mess with the Set animal. How does Carter's falcon eyesight work and what does it mean? Is there something to the fact that Carter's abilities are more physical? What do we think about Set and Set's animal being described as evil? Cats always land on their feet, and so do cat goddesses! It's kind of cool there are consequences to turning into birds too often. We love seeing the growth between Carter and Sadie! There's lots of aunts in this week's discussion! Being able to store stuff in the Duat seems highly convenient! Did you remember the bit about the locker from the beginning of the book? This was a well-balanced chapter! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 99, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapter 22 before doing some predictions for the rest of the book! Prophecy Radio episode #56 talks about the Lotus Hotel & Casino, and all of the references and Easter eggs we might see in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show. The hosts tackle all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the Crown of Wishes adaptation, the Freedom Fire imprint, and yet another blog post from Rick Riordan, as well as a reread and discussion of Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 10. This book is really heating up, and we're only halfway through! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:03:53) Read Riordan lets us know how we can win a wilderness survival competition with the Hunters of Artemis. Make sure you go follow Tehlor Kay Mejia on Instagram, as she is no longer on Twitter. Roshani Chokshi's A Crown of of Wishes is getting an adaptation on Disney+! It's pretty cool that the show's lead, Avantika, has ties to both Aryan Simhadri (Grover) and Charles Bushnell (Luke). This might even help pave the way for an Aru Shah adaptation! Kwame Mbalia gives everyone a pep talk for NaNoWriMo. Did you also hear the Kwame is heading up a new imprint for Disney Books, called Freedom Fire? Yeah, we're super excited about this. Lotus Hotel & Casino references and Easter eggs (00:12:04) Obviously a Nico and Bianca Easter egg is at the top of everyone's lists, but there's A LOT more Percy Jackson and the Olympians can do with this scene/episode. Obviously Karen's first choice is to put a Disney Hercules reference in the show somehow. Maybe the kids could be playing the Hercules Playstation game that came out way back in 1997? You can currently buy this game on Steam. Is anyone a fan? Kristen also had some ideas for what kind of Disney Easter eggs could end up in the show. We gotta get Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid in there somehow. But what about Doctor Who!? That could actually make for a GREAT crossover/reference. And, of course, there's always Wreck-It-Ralph. Karen is definitely on board for the water theme—but she had an idea for what their rooms at the hotel could look like. Where would Grover and Annabeth stay? And how could we fit Oliver and Company into this world? We really couldn't pass up this opportunity to drop some movie references. Wouldn't it be cool if Logan Lerman or Alexandra Daddario showed up in the background as one of the adult characters in the hotel? It totally makes sense if the Lotus Hotel was hosting a convention that week! Really, though, Disney needs to hire us. We're so good at this. Poor Grover needs a Lotus Hotel & Casino redemption arc after what he went through in the movie. Some famous missing person HAS to show up at the hotel. It just makes so much sense! Book canon and show canon don't have to match exactly. Do we want the show to break the fourth wall at all? How cool would it be if this scene foreshadowed what would happen in Sea of Monsters aka Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. How many classic videogames can they fit into this one scene!? What's more likely, a Kingdom Hearts or Dreamlight Valley reference? Just please, for the love of the gods, don't turn this into Ready Player One. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:38:37) This week, we're talking The Last Olympian chapter 10. Thank goodness Mrs. O'Leary didn't get put to sleep! Do we ever see the video shield again in the series? Where's the line between science and magic within this universe? What is Grover up to right now? Is he back at CBH? Should Annabeth have been the one to direct all the troops, considering she's a daughter of Athena? This is, like, a REAL war, you guys. Karen NEEDS that Death to Barbie t-shirt. Please give us a Thalia spinoff series!! Percy and Annabeth are such good people. How could you not love them!? These automatons are awesome and SCARY. The scene with the two rivers was pretty cool, but… Can someone please explain how the heck Percy knew what to do with the sand dollar? Percy's got a lot of baggage when it comes to the Minotaur, and we can't wait to see what happens next! Does it make sense that the demigods would be fighting for Olympus, specifically? Feedback (01:17:03) Shout-out to Phoebe for also thinking a Hercules reference would be perfect to see in the Lotus Hotel & Casino scenes. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 57, where we'll do a Deep Dive on Hermes (seriously, it's perfect timing). This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. They also tackle all the latest news in the Rick Riordan universe, including the latest blog post from the author of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:34) Dior Goodjohn's Are You Afraid of the Dark season 3 is airing right now on Nickelodeon! For a moment, Karen forgets how to watch real TV. It looks like Percy Jackson and the Olympians is filming the Capture the Flag scene. Make sure you check out the cover reveal for the Maze of Bones graphic novel. Roseanne A. Brown wants to remind you that she did NOT write Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting under the patronage of an eccentric professor. We discuss Rick's August 6 blog post. There are a lot of books coming out from Rick Riordan Presents! We get an update on the Solangelo book—including possible tour plans and Rick's reaction to the cover. Mark Oshiro's book with the cool mushroom cover is called Into the Light. What's this other book project Rick is working on?? Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows is officially out in the world! We're super excited for the Paola Santiago adaptation! Tehlor wrote a really beautiful letter saying goodbye to the series. Abuela has some tips and tricks if you happen to find yourself in possession of an arma del alma. But more importantly…which Paola Santiago character are you? Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia (00:25:10) It's time to talk about the first book in the Paola Santiago series! By the way, the narrator for these books (Frankie Corzo) is REALLY good. How did Kristen feel about reading River of Tears for the first time? We definitely know how to pronounce the Gila River. Paola reminds us a little of Aru Shah, tbh. Science girls for the win! This book really nails the boy/girl middle school dynamic. Paola's mom really doesn't serve much of a role in this book except to cause some friction for the main character. Abuela might not have a huge role, but she's a pretty important character. We included Emma, even though she doesn't feature too prominently in this book. Look, it's been a while since Karen read this one. Give her a break. WE DEFINITELY TALK ABOUT BRUTO. Is Riptide…an arma del alma? Would you like to live in Limbo for your whole life? Which of the monsters did we like most? Put us down as not fans of the mano pachona. Karen scars Kristen with images of the the lechuza. The SPOILER SECTION starts at 00:58:40 La Llorona's castle was pretty amazing. Kristen was personally attacked by Marisa. Okay, we know La Llorona has a reputation, but why is she so MEAN? Abuela is a total badass, and we are HERE for it. There's not too much to say about Los Niños de la Luz…for now. Interview with Tehlor Kay Mejia (01:11:05) Following on the heels of the Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows release, we spoke with Tehlor Kay Mejia about the series as a whole. If you've read Paola Santiago, you won't be too surprised by her choice of go-to snacks. Is there an editing critique that she has the most trouble with? Tehlor talks a bit about reconnecting with her culture's folklore and how different families connect to different ones in a variety of ways. When did Tehlor come up with the idea for Paola Santiago? Are any of the characters in these books based on people she knows? How did Tehlor make sure the books weren't too scary for her audience? Which scenes hit the cutting room floor? Are there any monsters she wishes could've been included? And, more importantly, would she ever write more stories in this vein so she could include them? After getting Naomi on her character quiz, we ask what similarities and differences she has with her. Is it TOO personal to ask what kind of nightmares El Cucuy would show someone? Out of all three books, which scene is the MOST Paola Santiago? We find out the answer to one of our favorite questions to ask—who would be Tehlor's godly Greek parent? What's the best book she's read lately? And, of course, we have to ask how it feels now that Paola Santiago is getting its own adaptation! Does Tehlor have any upcoming projects she can talk about? What else is on that author bucket list of hers? Feedback (01:29:53) We get another email from Caoimhe, who tells us about tír na nóg and Setanta (sorry for butchering the pronunciation!!). We're definitely going to do future episodes about more than Greek myths. How did Kristen and Karen first meet? Caoimhe's friend Eimear also did a little drawing for us, and it's so good! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 45, in which we'll celebrate Percy Jackson's birthday and discuss “Percy Jackson and the Bronze Dragon” and “Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades.” This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. It began with the lighting of a lamp. One day three of Aru Shah's schoolmates show up at her doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, then she can get herself out of this mess with her school friends. But lighting the lamp unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon also known as the Lord of Destruction, who's determined to end the world unless the youth can stop him. The novel brings to play the largely untapped world of Hindu mythology and its figures who are deployed to help the young heroine on a journey replete with contemporary pop culture references and an exploration of karma and reincarnation. In THE NECTAR OF IMMORTALITY, ARU SHAH has only until the next full moon to stop the Sleeper from gaining infinite power. But how can Aru, Mini, and Brynne hope to defeat him without their celestial weapons? The Sleeper and his army are already plundering the labyrinth, and the sisters can't even enter. Their quest to get in will have them calling on old friends, meeting new allies, and facing fearsome trials, like...performing in a rock concert? When the moment of confrontation finally arrives, it's up to Aru to decide who deserves immortality, the devas or the asuras. The most unexpected answer will come from a most unexpected place. More surprises and delights, gods, and demons, and laughs and tears await in this immensely satisfying conclusion to the wild ride that began with the lighting of a lamp.

Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then do a deep dive on the god of war himself, Ares (plus fancast him for Percy Jackson and the Olympians), as well as read Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapters 17 and 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:47) Did anyone enjoy #TitansCurseWeek? Oh well, hope you're prepared for #BattleOfTheLabyrinthWeek! If you've read Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, then you already know who Rudy Rocks is. With Ballad and Dagger coming out this week, it's time to meet Mateo Matisse and Chela Hidalgo. We also got some great book news this week! First up, Pahua and the Soul Stealer by Lori M. Lee is getting TWO sequels. We also have an official title for City of the Plague God book 2. Plus, Sarwat Chadda is designing his own cover! Then Kristen surprises Karen with even more news—Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee is getting a sequel. Everyone is highly anticipating Percy Jackson and the Olympians casting, especially because we just found out our Grover is headed to Vancouver. And don't worry! There WILL be more updates soon. By the way, Rick doesn't mind if the cast of the musical (or probably the show) signs your books! How do we get our hands on some blue candy? Becky and the kids helped Rick with research for Sea of Monsters! Isn't that nice? Say hello to the Koningsdam. Walker Scobell did an interview with Rolling Stone in which he talked about reading Percy Jackson for the first time. Deep Dive: Ares (00:17:29) Ares was a fun god to do, especially after the craziness that was Zeus. What does Ares look like according to Greek mythology? Why does Ares have so many sacred animals? We debate poisonous versus venomous. We also learn the differences between Ares and Athena, as deities of war. Ares is so much more than just the god of war. Is Ares a coward? Ares' fortress in Thrace sounds kind of awesome, to be honest. What would YOU be the god of? You won't be too surprised when you learn who worshiped Ares. We don't want to know how Ares wound up with dragon sons. Now we know who to blame for those skeleton warriors, and it isn't Ares!! It should come as no surprise that Ares was put on trial for murder. What is Ares like in the Percy Jackson books? It's always interesting how we envision characters in a book differently than they're described. A baseball bat is the perfect weapon for his spear to turn into. Wait, how big is his motorcycle!? Never forget the seat made of Caucasian human skin. Ares is definitely an iconic character. Karen's first pick would be perfect based on looks alone, but he's a little too old. Meanwhile, Kristen's least likely pick would be awesome but he doesn't usually play outright villains. Karen's next pick is a Sons of Anarchy alum, but maybe not the one you're thinking. Kristen's next choice is definitely a pretty boy, but she's very certain he could pull off being Ares. The first person Karen thought of is someone we all know, and he's played good guys and bad guys alike. We take a break and play a little bit of word association. Kristen's next pick is used to playing big, intimidating characters. Karen's top choice will come as no surprise to anyone who knows her. Kristen's final choice has played an extremely evil character in the past. We had a listener write in with her own pick for Ares! Never Doubt Rick Riordan. Chapter Reviews (01:03:52) We're getting close to the end of the book! Starting off, let's get into Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapter 17. Thalia seems a lot more herself in this chapter. “The sky still yearns to embrace the earth.” We discuss the importance of that grey streak in Annabeth's hair. Why did Percy's sword fail him? Percy is so brave! He's such a fantastic character. Thank goodness for Mr. Chase. Thalia versus Luke was a pretty awesome scene. How would we have felt if Luke had died at the end of this chapter? Is that REALLY where the story of Santa Clause came from? It's so amazing to see how far Percy has come with Thalia and Zoë. Now it's time for Titan's Curse chapter 18. This one was pretty rough. But once again we have to shout-out Mr. Chase trying his best. How does one monster-proof a house? Asking for a friend. Annabeth ran away for the first time when she was seven. Is her dad really the same person he was back then? The fact that their relationship is messy is actually quite realistic, and it's good for kids to see in media. Zoë's death scene was brutal. How long did she know she was the one from the prophecy? We get to meet some new pegasi. Annabeth and Percy should've hugged!! So, Luke is totally not dead. What now!? And why was Annabeth so certain about that? Would Percy have felt Luke deserved to die if he hadn't just lost Bianca and Zoë? Karen's up to her usual terrible jokes. Feedback (01:45:40) Jessica asks us how long Annabeth held up the sky, and we try our best to figure it out. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 31, where we'll do a deep dive on the god Hades and discuss our fancasting for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:12) #SeaOfMonstersWeek is coming to a close, but we're primed and ready for #TitansCurseWeek! April 19 seemed to be a pretty big day for book releases. First up, we've got the Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel. Oh, and don't miss the Jambavan article on Read Riordan. Then we've got Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse (book 2 in the Between Earth and Sky series). Lastly, don't forget about Flirting with Fate by J.C. Cervantes. This week, we also got the announcement of Roshani Chokshi's new book, The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. Rick thanks the fans for putting Daughter of the Deep on the NYT bestsellers list for 25 weeks, and gives us an update on the screenplay. We also get a little update on the Kane Chronicles movie, as well as the Solaneglo book. Did you catch the chat between Rick Riordan and Daniel José Older? Do you know what well-known author helped him come up with the title Ballad & Dagger? We've also got a brand new Rick blog post to discuss! First up, a reminder that Rick is no longer on social media and that Ashlee Latimer posts from his accounts. Annabeth and Grover casting will be soon! Will Walker dye his hair black? Does Rick care if Annabeth is blonde? And we get some more reassurance that this adaptation is going to be awesome. The Adam Project starring Walker Scobell (00:21:27) How did we feel about The Adam Project the first time we watched it? What about the second? Surprising no one, we both really loved this one. Ryan Reynolds is always funny, but Walker really held his own. We talk about our favorite scenes and lines from the movie—ones that really remind us of Percy Jackson. There are even some shots from the movie that look like they could be from the show. Walker is going to be such a sassy Percy, and we are ready for it! Can't you just imagine him going toe-to-toe with Ares? Walker is a great physical actor, and that's going to come in handy for this show. Adam and his mom's relationship is a little snarkier than Percy and Sally's, but we can't wait to see it play out on screen. Speaking of moms, did you recognize Catherine Keener? The Maya/Adam standoff is not wholly unlike the Ares/Percy standoff. We're still curious how that scene at the end is going to play out. It's totally a lightsaber. There are so many scenes from Lightning Thief that will be awesome to see on screen, especially now that we know Walker is playing Percy. The Adam Project proves Walker Scobell has the capacity to do all sorts of roles. We're so excited for this!!! Chapter Reviews (00:41:43) Kristen's really working on those brief recaps. It's time to discuss Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapter 15! Hank and Chuck were pretty fantastic. But what does it look like back at the dam with the statues missing? It's cool that Sally can see through the Mist. There is so much more Rachel Elizabeth Dare to come. Nereus is basically a fish leprechaun. Karen stands by her love of Bessie. Did you know the origins of the manticore? Was Dr. Thorn or Kronos weaving some sort of magic over Thalia, or was she simply thinking the whole situation through? After all, she has valid reasons to be mad at Zeus and the Olympians. Maybe Mr. D does care about Peter Johnson? This whole scene was pretty spectacular. Now it's time for Titan's Curse chapter 16! We finally know for sure who Zoë's hero was. Can you believe Percy sacrificed the Nimean lion skin? Is no one worried about Grover!? The Chases are kind of…great? It was so interesting meeting Annabeth's dad for the first time. We don't blame her for not always getting along with him, but there's also no malice on his end, so it's easy to forgive him. You can definitely tell why Athena fell in love with him. Zeus made the wrong move trying to get rid of Thalia. And what about Percy and Zoë!? Atlas is not the nicest guy. Percy and Annabeth's reunion was supercharged, and we're here for it.. Feedback (01:20:22) Laura agrees with us—Tyson is the best! Huge thanks to Nicolaas for being impressed by our varied casting choices for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 30, where we'll talk about the god Ares and discuss our fancasting for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (01:58:00) Have you been participating in #LightningThiefWeek? Don't forget this week is #SeaOfMonstersWeek. This is all leading up to the release of the new Victo Ngai Percy Jackson and the Olympians covers on May 3. Karen also has a correction for Ballad & Dagger‘s release date from last week's episode. Congratulations to Roshani Chokshi for Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality becoming a NYT bestseller. Have you met Tumburu? If you're new here, make sure you go back and listen to our Roshani Chokshi interview. Remember, you can pre-order Tehlor Kay Meji'a Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows, the final book in the series. But don't be sad about it ending because we're gonna get a Disney+ show! The Percy Jackson and the Olympians writer's room has been talking about Procrustes. Yes, it's finally time to talk about it: Percy Jackson and the Olympians has cast Walker Scobell in the titular role. We read Rick's April 11 blog post to celebrate. Here's the infamous Kraft mac & cheese commercial. Make sure you're following Walker's real Twitter and Instagram accounts. Karen's going to keep an article on the show's casting up to date, so make sure you hold her accountable! In case it needs to be said, #PJOCastDeservesRespect. And on that note, let's talk about Annabeth's casting for a minute. Make sure you're not bugging Rick, Becky, or Ashlee about details they don't know or can't share yet! Prophecy Radio is a safe space. Click here if you'd like to listen to Karen's guest spot on #Millennial. Deep Dive: Zeus (00:29:50) Now it's time to talk about the many crimes of Zeus. In case you need a reminder, Zeus doesn't need a bigger ego and Percy is a sass king. Zeus has had multiple wives, but the way he tricked Hera was particularly awful. Can the gods just not eat each other, please? Which of Zeus' many forms is your favorite? Oddly enough, Zeus was also in charge of punishing people because he stood for justice. To be fair, though, no one wants to get zapped by Zeus, so it was a good threat. Too bad he hated mankind. Kristen is offended we might be considered the stone race. But even Zeus isn't above doing time for his crimes. Zeus DID get schooled one time and one time only. But it's not a pretty picture. What was Zeus like in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles? Who doesn't love a good dramatic exit? Did we remember how Zeus was described in the books? Karen doesn't want Arnold schwarzenegger to be Zeus but he's got the look. Kristen actually does want Tom Felton to be Zeus, even though he's on the younger side. Winston Duke has proven as M'Baku that he can play a mercurial character. Should the show have blind casting for the gods? Kristen's next pick is also a Black Panther alum: Michael B. Jordan. You know who else looks good in a suit? Henry Cavill. Have you heard of Wyatt Russell? If you want another old guy for Zeus, why not Jeff Bridges? Is he TOO old? How would this casting affect the rest of the gods' appearances? Would Dev Patel be better as Zeus or Hades? You know who else gives good beard? Oscar Isaac. The first person who came to Kristen's mind when she heard Zeus' description in the books was Adam Driver. Chapter Reviews (01:12:31) It's time to talk about Titan's Curse chapter 13! Isn't it weird they didn't find Bianca's body? Was Bianca stealing the figurine stupid or sweet? Bianca and Nico spent SO LONG in the Lotus Hotel. Would they have noticed how much things had changed since being in the hotel? How did we feel about Aphrodite's introduction? We're so excited to see how they'll cast her in the show. Has Pan's presence supercharged Grover? We're kind of obsessed with the idea of this junkyard of the gods. Kristen reads her “brief” recap for Titan's Curse chapter 14. What's making Grover so emotional? Percy is a good kid, but it's too bad he has to be the strong one in this situation. We finally find out who Zoe really is and what she's done. Gurgle, gurgle. We all miss Annabeth so much. Who wouldn't want to go to the dam snack bar? Rachel. Elizabeth. Dare. Thank goodness Thalia said please! Feedback (01:41:41) Henry writes in again to ask us a bunch of useful questions! Visit Subjectify Media's Spotify profile for the Prophecy Radio playlists. Yes, we will be discussing each episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and we may even pause our rereads so we have plenty of time for the show. We still have high hopes for interviewing a lot of people related to the show and the RRP imprint. Would Rick ever make a Stan Lee-style cameo in Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Would we want him to be a teacher or a party pony? New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (01:19:00) Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality by Roshani Chokshi is out in the world! Read our full review. Did you listen to our interview with Roshani Chokshi? Be sure to check out the accompanying article, too! Oh, and the Trials of Apollo series is in paperback now. And the Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel is out on April 19. Are you ready for #LightningThiefWeek? We're putting together playlists for the podcast, so if you haven't already, go listen to all of our Lightning Thief episodes. Don't forget about Daniel José Older's Ballad & Dagger tour! (Correction: The book comes out May 3!) Now it's time to break down Rick's latest blog post. Rick and Becky have been setting up their place in Vancouver, and we're jealous. Karen and Kristen get nerdy about props and costume design. Did you ever think about how the orange Camp Half-Blood shirts would show up on screen? The higher-ups are still happy, which is great and all, but we really want to see those monster mock-ups. We're all very excited about casting, and it's coming! We need to be patient and make sure we're not bugging Becky and Ashlee for information they can't give us yet! We have plans to do fancasting for some of the other big characters (like we did with Poseidon), but we're working against the clock! Oh, and here's our confirmation that Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1's episode count is eight. Plus, we get a little update on the Daughter of the Deep film, as well as the Solangelo book. Aru Shah and the End of Time (00:23:15) It's time to get into the first book in the Pandava series (spoiler-free until the end). What's it about, exactly? Kristen has a very accurate summary. This is the first time she's read one of Roshani's books, so…what did she think? Aru Shah is such a great character and has such an interesting relationship with the truth. And then there's Mini, who Kristen definitely relates to. Yes, she was that girl. We love Boo, even though he's a complex character. Karen is sure to avoid spoilers, but it's tough! Boo is totally in a Mushu situation, and we can't help but quote Mulan. Oh, and Boo has…taken pigeon form. Except we both picture him a little differently. The Sleeper is a pretty cool name for a villain. But he's also downright terrifying. There are a ton of other interesting characters from Hindu mythology that show up, too. Glory to Hanuman! Who doesn't love a good rhyming sage? Motion to make pre-winter a thing all around the world. Roshani's chapter titles rival Rick's for sure. A lot of stuff from End of Time comes full circle in Nectar of Immortality. Shout-out to both the weapons and the Night Bazaar. Our spoiler discussion starts at 1:02:57. If you want to avoid spoilers, jump to the timestamp for the Titan's Curse chapter reviews. We discuss the Sleeper's true identity. Did we guess who he was? Does the Sleeper have a point? Does he have a good argument? Karen asks what Kristen thought of the ending. Did we like the cliffhanger? We want to talk about Song of Death soon, but it'll probably have to wait a couple of months. There are just so many things we want to talk about right now! Chapter Reviews (01:10:53) It's time for Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapter 11. It's pretty neat that Zoë was there when Riptide was created. Prophecy Count: 15 Apollo gave us our new tagline. Something is definitely up with Bianca and Nico, but we're saving it for the next chapter. Why did Thalia make it sound like it was Percy's fault Annabeth was thinking about joining the Hunters? Do we know WHY Annabeth might want to join the Hunters? Who could've been the person with Zoë in the dream?? Apollo got super deep in this chapter, and Karen is into it. It's time to go snowboarding with a pig in Titan's Curse chapter 12. We get an explanation from Bianca about why she wanted to join the Hunters, but we don't really like it. Who really deserves the blame here?? What's going on with Nico and Bianca? Do we know who's responsible for all of this? Percy discovers Thalia's secret, and she's not too happy about it. There are cold areas in New Mexico. Who knew? We love that Grover's search for Pan is still a part of the series. When was the last time Zoë felt Pan's presence? Has Grover ever felt his presence as strong as this? We will single-handedly make sure Percy Jackson and the Olympians gets five seasons if we have to. Feedback (01:45:26) Becky loved our interview with Roshani Chokshi. Daniel also thought of another role Logan Lerman could take on in the show! Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then conduct an interview with none other than Roshani Chokshi ahead of the release of Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, as well as read Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapters 9 and 10. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:14) Kristen wonders, “What IS news?” but Karen is too tired to think about it. Roshani Chokshi is doing promo for Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, including a video where she answers questions in 11 seconds or less as well as a quiz based on the Pandava series. Did you know it was also Grover Underwood Appreciation Week? It's 2022. Would Grover be vegan? By complete coincidence, they were also talking about Grover in the writer's room. This is your weekly reminder to be patient about casting news. Thanks to Rebecca Kuss, we'll be getting new YA Rick Riordan Presents books soon! Read Riordan published an article for Women's History Month between J.C. Cervantes and Tehlor Kay Mejia. Plus, there's an article about Baby Boo from Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality. Did you tell Becky what kind of behind-the-scenes content you want to see? We've probably got a blog post incoming! Roshani Chokshi interview (00:18:45) Today, we have a very special guest in Roshani Chokshi, who is here to promote the fifth and final book in the Pandava series, Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality. Our first question is whether Rosh has any quirky habits when it comes time to sit down and write. And what about special snacks? You'll NEVER guess her answer. Is there an editing critique that Rosh hates seeing in her drafts? Just like Greek mythology, Hindu mythology isn't always appropriate for the children. Rosh tells us what it's been like to kick off the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. What kind of doors populate Roshani's subconscious? Is there any chance Roshani will ever return to the world of Aru Shah? Plus, Rosh gives us an update on the Aru Shah adaptation. Can you guess what her Greek godly parent would be? And what Rick Riordan Presents series would Rosh want to visit? Wanda Maximoff: Misunderstood heroine or villain in the making? And we get to hear about her cursed dream project. (For real, though, it sounds awesome.) What other projects does Roshani have coming up? Buy Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality by Roshani Chokshi from Disney Books, Bookshop.org, Book Depository, or Amazon. You can also add it to your Goodreads list. Chapter Reviews (00:51:48) Let's get back to Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse, shall we? Shockingly, we're going to start with chapter 9. It's realistic that Mr. D caught Percy, but how DARE he act high and mighty! Does Mr. D actually want to care about Percy and Annabeth and the others? What's going on with Zoë and this mysterious hero who broke her heart? Where in the world is Annabeth? Do we remember who the General is? Can we have a saber-tooth kitty? Please? Now it's onto chapter 10, and we're halfway through the book. Zoë would be a better leader if she just listened to people. Have you ever eaten astronaut food? Percy is a smart cookie! Should we do an episode on the spoils of war? Proud of you, Zoë. Kronos is a four-course meal of evil. Feedback (01:20:23) Nicolaas really loves Troy, and Karen once again admits she needs to rewatch it. And Mr. Pink is reading the series for the first time in English. How exciting! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 27, where we'll discuss Aru Shah and the End of Time. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. You may already know of Roshani Chokshi, author of the Pandava Quintet, a 5-book series and part of the “Rick Riordan Presents” publishing imprint. According to Entertainment Weekly, she “puts girl power and diverse protagonists front and center,” and “spins a modern-day fairy tale that adults and children will love,” according to Bustle. Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, the fifth and final book, is, according to Kirkus, “[the] thrilling closing adventure shines with the strength of sisterhood, South Asian representation and Chokshi's trademark humor and wit. A deeply satisfying conclusion to a superb, groundbreaking series. The quintet was inspired by the stories her grandmother told her as well as Roshani's consuming love for Sailor Moon. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then talk about their favorite movies and television shows based on Greek mythology, as well as read Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapters 7 and 8. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:31) We're having a quarter-life crisis. But also: am baby. Not a ton of news this week, but that's okay because a lot has been happening recently! Becky told us where Rick first learned to scuba dive and what project he was working at the time. A lovely listener also sent us this article from 2001 detailing the experience. Then we debate the merits of snorkeling and whether sharks and puppies are the same thing. Did you read the Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality sneak peek? Next, we take some time to do the Nine Worlds quiz on air. Be sure to tell us what you got, too! Movies and TV based on Greek mythology (00:22:12) We had to expand this section to include television, AND THAT'S OKAY. Karen kicks us off with Hercules, even though she forgot it existed. Kristen is full of fun facts today, including a heartwarming story about Danny DeVito. We really love the songs in Hercules, and Hades is just so charismatic. Kristen switches tones with her first pick: Immortals. We might be in disagreement about how we feel about this movie, but we definitely agree the cast is stellar. Kristen is still mad Luke Evans wasn't nominated for Beauty and the Beast. We just HAD to include Xena: Warrior Princess. And Karen found out this show has some significant connections to a few other properties she loves. Most of this episode is just us convincing each other to watch things. Sorry, Karl Urban. At least you're a very handsome man. Next up: 300. Kristen has strong feelings about Zack Snyder. We take a little time to do some Gerard Butler appreciation. Karen wants everyone to know about Blood of Zeus, especially if you're a Percy Jackson fan. This one also has an interesting connection to Immortals! Animation for the win! Kristen picks Troy for her last movie, and Karen shares her viewing experience of the film. Shout-out to Air Force One. That Troy cast, though. Kristen sends Karen a very unsubtle message. Kristen's got some runners-up, but they're not all winners. There is room for some modern adaptations of Greek mythology, so let's go, Hollywood! Chapter Reviews (01:14:10) Okay, let's get ready for Titan's Curse chapter 7. Would Grover choose Artemis or Pan? Zoë is very intense. Does Mr. D actually care about the campers? Don't be embarrassed, Percy! Is Zoë a good leader? Why do all these sage older mentors never share pertinent information!? Not going on this quest is…kind of a good thing? Is Sally's support of Percy's journey realistic? Does she have ulterior motives? Prophecy Count: 14 Luke will definitely make more bad choices. What does Blackjack sound like, and who could voice him? Let's talk about Titan's Curse chapter 8 and all of Percy's bad decisions. Is Bessie cute even though she has a snake butt? We super do not trust Zoë just yet. Trying to manipulate a prophecy is not going to end in your favor. Making dangerous promises probably will not also end in your favor. We're so glad Blackjack is an active part of this story now. Feedback (01:47:22) What is your preferred episode length? Henry linked us to the Production Weekly page about Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ start and end dates. Who'd be the best god at editing podcasts? Thank you for the lovely email, Caoimhe! Should we do a Harry Potter/Percy Jackson crossover episode? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 26, where we'll have some fun Aru Shah things for you. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then do a deep dive on the god Poseidon and wonder who they'd like to see portray him in the show, as well as read Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapters 5 and 6. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:12) We are perfect and have no flaws. No mistakes! Don't grow up, kids. Jen Cervantes has started writing The Lords of Night 2, but blank pages are hard. Are you going to attend Roshani Chokshi's Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality book tour? We've seen some information floating around the internet about Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+, but take everything with a grain of salt until it's been confirmed. First up is a PJOTV cast breakdown for each episode. @updatespercy is a very helpful news source. Go follow them! Next, we have a production end date. We wonder how the show will be shot and when we might start seeing episodes. Then we talk about working titles and other information. Could they be shooting in NYC at all? Karen needs to work on her transitions. Deep Dive: Poseidon (00:18:50) We have an ulterior motive for doing this episode now. Reminder that Melissa Ponzio would make a perfect Sally Jackson. Isn't it a little weird that Poseidon made horses? Oh yeah, Poseidon does have a thing about bulls. His golden chariot sounds pretty cool, too. We're not going to go through ALL the myths, just the ones that are more relevant. Like most gods, he has a complicated family tree and definitely has some issues with his dad. Rick had his work cut out for him talking about some of these nastier myths. Sometimes we don't know things, and that's okay. You might love your siblings, but you probably don't want to live with them. Why do telkhines sound so familiar!? Amphitrite just wanted to be her own person, but Poseidon wasn't too bad of a husband. If Poseidon had his own city, what would it be called? Poseidon is the patron god of never getting the city he wants. The Trojan Horse makes a lot more sense now that we know more about Poseidon. Poor Demeter. She really got the short end of the stick here. At least Hestia got off okay? Let's get into the Poseidon we know and love from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Who holds the record for the most demigod children? Now that we're refreshed on Poseidon's physical attributes and his personality, let's discuss who we want to portray Percy's dad in the television show. Karen's first pick is none other than the Winter Soldier himself, Sebastian Stan. Let's be real, a defining characteristic is whether the person can rock long hair. Kristen's next pick might be a little out of left field, but Zac Efron would be a GET. Shame on Karen for never having seen A High School Musical. We're stuck on the age thing a little bit—how old should the gods appear to be? If Momoa wants to play Poseidon, we're not going to complain, but it's low-hanging fruit. Karen tried to avoid picking her go-to actor, but he'd be such a good catch that she couldn't do it. Because who doesn't love Idris Elba and want him in everything!? What would Poisedon's godly outfit look like? Okay, next up is another major player who's also been in Game of Thrones, and that's none other than…Kit Harrington! Plus, he's done some Greek-inspired movies before. Again, long hair is very important. Which means we have to include Keanu Reeves on this list. And we already know he'd be down to do a movie or show for kids! Karen and Kristen both feel pretty strongly about this last choice for Poseidon. Chris Hemsworth has already played a god, after all! Let. Him. Keep. His. Accent. One of our listeners also had a great suggestion! Chapter Reviews (00:59:39) It's time for Titan's Curse chapter 5. There's a lot going on in BOTH of these chapters. Strap in. We're super glad Percy stood up to Mr. D, even though that was a dangerous gamble. Why is Mr. D so awful sometimes?? Nico is turning into a rebellious teenager before our very eyes. Shouldn't Nico be having a larger reaction to the news that Bianca is a Hunter now? There are a lot of conversations we wish we'd been privy to. Is Nico fully aware of what it means for Bianca to be a Hunter now? At least Percy and Thalia had that heart-to-heart. We really appreciate that Rick isn't afraid to explore some difficult family dynamics. Your mother is definitely worried about you, Percy. What's this secret quest Clarisse is on? Prophecy Count: 12 We're getting Atlas vibes here. We love Tyson AND peanut butter. Kristen is a professional. Now it's time for Titan's Curse chapter 6! If Artemis were truly lost, what would happen to the Hunters? What do we think about Annabeth contemplating an oath to Artemis? Did the Oracle actually grin at Percy? And what's going on with that scarf? We can't remember. How do official CBH-sanctioned quests actually work? We're learning all kinds of things today. Would the Campers have won capture the flag if Annabeth was there? Isn't Pinecone Face a little…low? Prophecy Count: 13 Who's the goddess in chains? We have a ton of feedback this week! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 25, where we'll discuss our favorite Greek mythology-inspired movies. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:34) Have you heard about the Rainbow Book List? Mark Oshiro got two top 10 designations for his books! Reyna gives us some fun facts about Pegasus and it got kind of…dark. Roshani Chokshi did a wonderful interview with Joe Caramagna and Anu Chouhan for the Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel. Did you figure out the puzzle on the new Battle of the Labyrinth cover? You can read Ballad and Dagger chapter 1. What If...? season 2: Sea of Monsters (00:06:15) Did you listen to Prophecy Radio episode 9, where we did our first What If… scenarios? In case you aren't familiar, we explain what we mean by What If… We tried really hard to stick with Sea of Monsters scenarios! Karen wants to know…what if Grover had never created the empathy link? Is Grover a Hufflepuff? How else could Percy have known Grover was missing? Would they have even known about the Golden Fleece? If you changed Tyson's introduction, it could all still work. Next, Kristen wants to know…what if the sea of monsters was actually in Poseidon's domain? How does Poseidon's domain actually work? Would this quest have been a lot easier? Percy might've gotten more credit for the quest, at least. How exactly do you kill a god? Asking for a friend. Karen wants to know…what if Clarisse and Percy didn't hate each other? Would she have to pretend to hate him in order to get intel from Ares? Clarisse might also make better decisions if she and Percy weren't so competitive. You wouldn't even have to change Clarisse's personality to pull this off. Anyone have some good platonic Percy/Clarisse fic to read? Kristen wants to know…what if Tyson had never prayed to Poseidon for help? Percy would lose a lot of character growth, at least at this point in his story. Where would Tyson have ended up and how would he have changed? Would Percy have died without Tyson by his side? This would definitely change Annabeth, too. Now, Karen wants to know…what if Luke had convinced Annabeth to join his side? More campers definitely would've joined Luke's side if she had switched. Would Annabeth have softened Luke at all? How far would she have let things go? Annabeth would've been a much darker character throughout the rest of the series. Lastly, Kristen wants to know…what if using the Golden Fleece to heal Annabeth drained it too much to heal Thalia? At the very least, Camp Half-Blood would've been a lot weaker. What kind of tree would you be, if you could choose? Percy definitely would've had plenty more things to worry about. And poor, poor Annabeth. She would've felt so guilty. Would more people have joined Luke if Camp was so weak? We got some feedback from Henry. What ONE thing would you consider changing in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles? Chapter Reviews (00:53:12) Let's get started on Titan's Curse chapter 3! Did Percy make the right call going after Dr. Thorn on his own? What do we think about the goddess Artemis? The Hunters are awesome but they might need to take it down a notch. Zoë Nightshade isn't making a good first impression. Did Zoë manipulate Bianca into joining the Hunters? What's the point of being immortal EXCEPT in battle? Is Bianca being irresponsible by joining the Hunters? Is this version of Nico different from the one we're used to seeing? Would Riptide be a separate card from the Percy Jackson card? Should we give all the Percy Jackson characters Pokésonas? Onto Titan's Curse chapter 4! We were so ready for Apollo to show up. It's so interesting to see how Rick explains science in relation to the mythological stories. How old is Thalia, exactly? It must be tough for Thalia to find her role at Camp and with the team. We might have an explanation for all these recent fluctuating temperatures. At least Thalia hit the water, right? Who wants fish dinner? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 24, where we'll do a deep dive into Poseidon and who we'd like to see portray him in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:00:53) Karen owns up to her mistakes. Happy birthday, Daniel José Older! Go pre-order Ballad and Dagger. J.C. Cervantes has seen the final cover for The Lords of Night. Rick posted a blog on January 22. First and foremost, go pre-order Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, which comes out on April 5! Pre-ordering books really helps authors (and it might help us, too)! City of the Plague God is now in paperback. Rick recommends The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton and The Door of No Return by Kwame Alexander. Karen is also throwing Shattered Midnight into the ring, as it's also by Dhonielle Clayton. We get another lovely Solangelo book update! Also, Kristen totally gets how awesome and interesting LEGOs can be. Be sure to enter our Tiger Honor giveaway! Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee (00:20:59) Read Karen's Tiger Honor book review. What are our general thoughts on Tiger Honor compared to Dragon Pearl? Sebin is a very different main character from Min. Did we like them? Are YOU a rule follower, or do you like to cause trouble like Min? A huge theme of this book is duty and loyalty, both to family and the Space Forces. The Juhwang tiger clan is intense. Like, really intense. Did we like anyone from the tiger clan?? It was nice to see Min and Jun again! Let's meet the new side characters. Which were our favorites? Okay, it's time to talk about Captain Hwan. Have our thoughts changed on him since we last saw him in Dragon Pearl? He's brought in some reinforcements. How did YOU picture Shield, Sena's sapsali? Is there room for more books in the Thousand World series? Chapter Reviews (01:00:15) It's time to talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 9. Okay, is it cool or creepy that Tyson can imitate voices? Do we think Thalia would've been on Luke's side? We totally see where Luke is coming from, but he's going about it the wrong way. Who are Luke's friends at Camp Half-Blood? Is Luke angrier at his dad or at the other gods? We kind of feel bad for Hermes! Tyson is the true MVP. Are you ready for chapter 10? Thank the gods (or one god in particular) for that thermos! But there's a bigger question here—how exactly do Iris messages work? You'll never have to be afraid if you're lost at sea with Percy Jackson! It makes a lot of sense that chain stores are evil. We get a little confused, but Percy has definitely never seen a hydra before. At least book Percy is smarter than movie Percy. Thank goodness for…Clarisse? We love that Percy recognized his own jealousy. You can take the demigod out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the demigod. Who doesn't love a good Monster Donut? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 17, where we'll discuss “The Diary of Luke Castellan” from The Demigod Diaries. Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then list out all the companion books, short stories, and illustrated editions we have so far, as well as analyze chapters 5 and 6 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:15) Karen and Kristen are throwing responsibility out the window forever! Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel debuted at #1 on Amazon! Daughter of the Deep jumped to #1 on the NYT bestsellers list. Sarwat Chadda is working on the next draft of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. We get a fantastic update about the Solangelo book. We're really excited to check in with other characters too. Kristen and Karen think they're hilarious. The Percy Jackson Disney+ show's writers room is back at it again! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting sounds great. We take a quick moment to shout out In Every Generation by Kendare Blake. Companion books, short stories, illustrated editions, oh my! (00:07:43) The Demigod Files includes three short stories, all of which sound great! We've read most of these, but it's been a while, so we don't remember them as well as we'd like. But Clarisse and Percy together is bound to be a lot of fun. (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) Oh, hey there, Charles Beckendorf! We get a wild Festus sighting, and we're so happy. How much did the Lightning Thief movie pull from “Sword of Hades” for Persephone's character? Don't forget, you can check these out at your local library! The Ultimate Guide is so much fun and a great collector's item. It's also very practical and incredibly useful! There is a cursed picture of Karen dressed as a daughter of Hephaestus for Halloween. We go off on a Beanie Baby tangent. “Percy Jackson and the Singer Apollo” is full of chaos, and we love it. Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods and Greek Heroes are SO PRETTY. Who HASN'T read Percy Jackson? Camp Half-Blood Confidential is another good pocket guide to keep on hand. Plus, there's the coloring book, with art by Keith Robinson. We only have the Lightning Thief illustrated edition and it's a TRAVESTY. John Rocco says there are no current plans to do more. Nobody would complain about more John Rocco art. Not to get ahead of ourselves, but we need a Percy Jackson Land at Disney World. We might have to do a whole episode on that idea. Let's dive into the Heroes of Olympus series now! We kick off with The Demigod Diaries, and “The Diary of Luke Castellan.” We'll be talking about this one in-depth soon! Hera is always messing things up. Ever heard of the bacchanalia? “The Son of Magic” was written by Rick's son! It's a fan-favorite. The Demigods of Olympus app might be long-gone. Time for the Kane Chronicles books! The Survival Guide is another awesome book to have on hand. Justice for Magnus Chase! Kristen will have to read the Kane Chronicles soon! The crossover short stories were a VERY BIG DEAL back in the day. But where's our crossover SERIES? Where's the Riordan Literary Universe (RLU)? And then Karen brings us all down. MOVING ON. We love Magnus Chase so much, and luckily there are some great guides for it. Einherjar is a very difficult word to say. There's always time for new books down the line! Did we…do a good job!? Let's talk graphic novels and why WE NEED MORE. Shhh, we're not allowed to have other interests! Chapter Reviews (00:38:13) Let's talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 5! Karen's living for Kristen's recaps. Everyone knows that feeling when your mom cleans your room against your will. Camp Half-Blood isn't a safe space anymore. Goodbye FOR NOW. Despite being “immortal,” it's so interesting how gods must rely on mortal worship to keep them going. We are not fans of Tantalus. Is Mr. D trying to comfort Tantalus, or is he giving him false hope? Can everyone please stop being mean to Tyson!? Are the other campers jealous of Tyson? We shouldn't be so cavalier about death. We are very happy to meet Charles Beckendorf again. We go on a Sponge-Bob tangent but Karen had to prove she has a brain. Time for chapter 6! BRAIN WORKS. Karen is very mad at Percy. BUT this is a good lesson for kids to learn. Karen was the annoying little brother. Lowercase pegasus versus capital letter Pegasus. Team Percabeth breaks up very quickly. Tyson gets a stick! Karen does not want to talk about the birdnado. Rick did Dean Martin dirty. Prophecy Count: 7 A lot has already happened in these first six chapters. We were feeling a lot of emotions today. And we have some feedback to go through! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 15, in which we'll discuss Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee and “The Initiative” from Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz come together to update you on the latest Rick Riordan news (including some new Daughter of the Deep information), discuss the Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities anthology, talk about the Rick Riordan Presents imprint and all its authors, and analyze chapters three and four of The Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates There's SO MUCH news! The U.S. Daughter of the Deep release date has changed. This means Prophecy Radio episode 3 will cover Rick Riordan Presents instead of our DotD review! Please, no spoilers. Check out the new cover reveals for The Last Fallen Moon, Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows, and the Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky graphic novel. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda is getting a sequel! Tower of Nero is now in paperback! Daughter of the Deep and Cursed Carnival are number one on Amazon! Be sure to check out the profile on Thandiwe from Tristan Strong. Carlos Hernandez did an awesome interview with Nerd Daily. Ashlee Latimer has been doing Rick's social media for a whole year! Karen watched the Cursed Carnival live video and has some fun facts from the event! Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Who wrote Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities? Some of these stories are a bit hefty! Read Karen's full Cursed Carnival review. Welcome to the Multiverse Mansion! Do the Rick Riordan Presents books exist in the Percy Jackson universe? Karen is still gunning for a crossover series from Rick. Kristen has no prior knowledge of any of the RRP stories. Mythology overload! What's up with this whole Gum Baby thing? Kristen had a little bit of an easier time with Rebecca Roanhorse's story. Sawat's story was full of sarcasm and dry wit. What's not to love? J.C. Cervantes' story really hits you with the mythology super fast! Now it's Karen's turn! She's read the books from the authors of the stories covered here. Read “Calamity Juice” first! Suffice it to say there are some Doctor Strange implications here. Not to play favorites, but Aru Shah is really awesome. Yoon Ha Lee's story was exciting because we're gonna get another book in this series. We find out why Kristen has trust issues. “The Initiation” has a lot of positive, subtle, natural representation. How could you not love Bruto!? Graci Kim, please give us enchanted baked goods. Last but not least, let's talk about Rick Riodan's new story. Will “My Life as a Child Outlaw” be related to anything else? Is this kid-friendly? Do we like the main character? There's a spinoff here that we'd love to read. Learning how to pronounce all the words was really fun! Chapter Reviews It's time to talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 3 and 4. We are now a Grover appreciation podcast. Favorite quotes and moments for chapter 3! Long live blue foods! Gabe is the worst. We're getting some Hagrid vibes here. Grover has no pants. Prophetic dreams are so fun to analyze. Prophecy Count: 1 On to chapter 4. How could you resist reading a book with chapter titles like this?? There's a reason why we made a Percy Jackson podcast. Kristen stole Karen's favorite moment, but it's okay, she found another one. We're SO CLOSE to Camp Half-Blood. Sally Jackson spinoff??? Percy must be just a little overwhelmed. Rick Riordan really is a phenomenal writer. We're having so much fun, and we hope you are, too! Please reach out to us if you have any questions or comments. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 3, which will discuss Rick Riordan Presents in more detail. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Hey it’s Arroe. This is Play It Forward. A look at the unexpected changes endured by entertainers, writers, camera people and all others affected but not infected by the global invasion of the Coronavirus. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 74: Tayler Green was recently part of season 18 on NBC’s The Voice. She doesn’t just vocalize the poetry she creates the moment with the tip of her writing instrument. War between the devas and the demons is imminent, and the Otherworld is on high alert. Fourteen-year-old Aru Shah and her friends are sent on a mission to rescue two "targets," one of whom is about to utter a prophecy that could mean the difference between victory and defeat. Turns out the targets, a pair of twins, are the newest Pandava sisters, though the prophecy says that one sister is not true. When the Pandavas fail to prevent the prophecy from reaching the Sleeper's ears, the heavenly attendants ask them to step aside. Aru believes that the only way to put the shine back on their brand is to find the Kalpavriksha, the wish-granting tree that came out of the Ocean of Milk when it was churned. We chat about how her Aru Shah story became the first book in Rick Riordan's new imprint, and all about the series, which is based in hindu mythology. She gives her insight into the differences in writing young adult vs middle grade, and we delve deep into the ways middle grade challenged her as a writer. Lots of really good stuff if you're a writer and want some insight into how to differentiate between the two age ranges. We also spend a good chunk of time talking generally about art and creating, what it's like to prove yourself as a woman, how the things that make us weird kids make us awesome adults, and so much more. I had an absolute blast chatting with her, and I think anyone with a creative streak will get something out of her thoughts and words. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher.   Feedback For horror westerns: In the Valley of the Sun by Andy Davidson, Hunger by Alma Katsu (rec'd by Emily)   Questions 1. Hello to the good people at Get Booked! My beautiful wife Amy is turning 40 next week (May 8th) and one thing she has asked for is a book recommendation from your podcast! Amy is a mindful and devoted mother of two who puts honesty, integrity, and her children's well-being above all else. She's a writer and a dancer, a lover and a dreamer, an artist and a baker. She's also a reader. An avid reader who's love of prose has skyrocketed in the last few years. Amy has recently discovered a love for YA novels. To quote Amy, "I like how they capture specific sentiments and feelings that are unique to young people. The characters don't always have adult reactions and it's interesting to see how they will express themselves. The writing doesn't need to be overly literary because that's not how to best represent the stories. I am interested in the unique space that YA occupies and all the YA books I've read recently have been excellent. Eleanor and Park, and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and Social Intercourse by Greg Howard are recent stand outs." But Amy loves more than YA. She also enjoys grown up and intelligent "literary" books that feel like works of art. Again, to quote: "I remember a moment reading The Goldfinch when I felt the plot slowed down and then I felt really excited thinking 'what if the rest of the book only explores this one little moment in time' - it became more about appreciating the beautiful writing." Amy is currently reading On the Come Up by Angie Thomas and The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman on audio (because she loves the movie Practical Magic and this book is about the aunt characters). She would also like you to know that when she hears the phrase “historical fiction” her eyes glaze over Any recommendations you could make to Amy would be greatly appreciated by herself and me and would certainly make this already monumental birthday even more special. Thank you very much! We look forward to your recommendation! -Dylan   2. Hi guys, I'm going on a ten hours train ride this friday, and then the next monday as well. (going to Toronto for the Comics Festival). I'd like something to read on my kobo during the train ride, something that would be light and fun. I enjoy queer fantasy and sci-fi in which no one dies and fairytale retellings with a (non dark) twist! -Marie   3. I have a background in archaeology and art history, and am a huge fan of stories related to art theft or crimes in museums, etc. One of my favorite movies of all time is The Thomas Crown Affair. I was wondering if you could recommend any novels of this type? Thank you so much! -B   4. I'm on a quest to find some appropriate audiobooks for a 14 hour road trip with my nieces (8 and 11) at the end of June. I want something exciting/engaging for both of them. The older one loves fantasy (she's making her way through HP atm), but the younger of the 2 can be sensitive with monsters, ghosts, etc.  Ideally, I'd like to find something with diverse characters, a little magic, and a great narration. Bonus points if it's a first of a series, so they can continue on if they love it. -The Cool Bookish Auntie   5. Hi all, I’m going to Spain in JUNE! I was looking for some books that I could go to the places in them. I'll be hitting up the major cities, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville. I am going to try to fit in Morocco and Portugal as well, so Lisbon and Porto, Rabat and Tangier... But Spain. Preferably fiction that will just take place in these places. My favorite author is VE Schwab, and I loved loved loved The Rook/Stiletto. -Rianna 6. My grandmother is in her nineties and still enjoys a great mystery. She dislikes books with explicit language or graphic sex and violence, but is also not particularly into "cozy" mysteries or faith-based fiction. She especially enjoys the "curmudgeonly detective in the country" genre. She is a fan of the Bruno series by Martin Walker, and is particularly fond of Agatha Christie's Poirot books. Please help me find some great new authors for her! -Beth   7. I've only recently discovered the podcast but have absolutely fallen in love with it in that time! Thank you for all the work you guys put into making it great. Growing up I used to love fiction, especially fantasy and sci-fi, but as an adult I've found myself struggling to get into most fiction and instead find myself, as an avid history fan, gravitating towards non-fiction. However, I desperately want to broaden my horizons and recapture some of the magic which I found in fantasy novels as a child. I'm looking for a fantasy novel where the focus is on the political intrigue and manoeuvring, like Game of Thrones, and less on the more fantastical elements of the world, such as other fantasy races etc, though of course some amount of that is okay. Looking forward to hearing your recs and thanks for the help!    -Andrew   Books Discussed The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner (TW gun violence) The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Intro Hi everyone and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who wants to connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love.  I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a teacher, a mom, and battling a cold this afternoon! So if I sound a little...off - that is why! This is episode #68 and Today I’m answering some questions about trends in middle grade and sharing with you some fabulous 2019 titles to look forward to this year! Q&A - Trends in Middle Grade Fiction Last month, my husband asked me some questions about trends in middle grade fiction. He teaches a class at Seton Hall all about trends in genre fiction and wanted some input on middle grade. So I thought I would share my responses with you. And I would be very curious about what YOU would answer. What genres or subgenres do you believe are the hottest right now? Well, it’s a format and not a genre but graphic novel memoirs like Hey Kiddo, Real Friends, and Be Prepared are still really popular. And also graphic novel adaptations of classics (like Anne of Green Gables) and popular novels (like Wings of Fire or Percy Jackson).  And again, not genre, but I see more books that are based on the core experiences of the writer. Those novels that draw on the real-life backgrounds of the authors like Kelly Yang’s Front Desk, Tami Charles’ Like Vanessa, and Supriya Kellar’s Ahimsa.  They’re not memoirs but they are books rooted in a very personal experience. To authors, I’d say - take those things that make you unique, that make you a bit quirky, that set you apart from most other people - and write THAT story. Like Kelly Yang taking the experiences of her family coming from China and running motels to write Front Desk. Jarrett Krosoczka writing the critically acclaimed graphic novel memoir Hey Kiddo about his life living with his grandparents after his mom lost custody of him due to drug addiction. Crack that door open and invite us inside. What genres or subgenres do you believe are passé or overexposed? I don’t know…. I do wonder how long the unicorn and narwhal craze will last but that seems to live more in picture books than middle grade. Magical realism - or rather realistic fiction with a magical twist - doesn’t seem to be slowing down. You know - anything can be new and fresh with the right spin.  And also, authors from marginalized backgrounds are still underrepresented in just about every genre so those are stories that will likely have new points of view. I thought I was totally over zombie stories but Dread Nation popped up and whoa!!  I’ve never read a zombie story like THAT before!   If you had to predict, what genre or subgenre do you think is primed to be the next Big Thing in the next year or so? I would say stories about immigrants, refugees, and the unique experiences of marginalized groups (especially by #ownvoices authors) will continue to be popular. Over the last couple of years we’ve seen an explosion of critically acclaimed middle grade stories like Alan Gratz’s Refugee, Jacqueline Woodson’s Harbor Me, and Escape from Aleppo by N.H. Senzai among many more. We also have more and more books coming out that tell stories of police violence in developmentally appropriate ways like Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes and Blended by Sharon Draper.  I’m also really excited about a new crop of middle grade #MeToo stories on the horizon like So Done by Paula Chase and the upcoming Barbara Dee novel Maybe He Just Likes You.   Any comments about where you see genre fiction heading? In middle grade, like everywhere else,  #ownvoices books are still underrepresented  - everyone has a unique story to tell or a unique POV to offer.  EVERYONE. So my advice to authors, take the spark of your unique life experiences and let that burn throughout your story.  My advice to educators - scour those shelves to find a wider variety of books. Also - if you write for a YA/MG audience, librarians and educators are more and more eager to the ditch the old canon and form partnerships with authors. Look for opportunities like #KidsNeedMentors or reach out to your local schools and libraries.   Book Talk - Most Anticipated Middle Grade Books of 2019   The last couple of episodes were all about looking back on some of the best that middle grade had to offer in 2018. (If you missed those, go check out episodes #66 and #67.)  But today is all about looking forward into the new year. Last year, when I did our Most Anticipated MG of 2018, I went chronologically by month. But this year I’m going about it a little differently and discussing the new releases by category.     First, we’ll chat about the new graphic novels coming up in 2019. And then we’ll talk about new releases from authors who debuted in 2018 and 2017 and see what they’re up to now. After that, I’ll give you a peek at some of the 2019 debut middle grade authors.  Then we’ll see what new books are coming out in favorite series and what sequels we have to look forward to. And finally, we’ll finish up with the 2019 releases from more established authors.   So, buckle up and get ready to add to your wish list. And remember - no need to go hunting for a pen and paper. You can find every book mentioned AND a picture of the available covers AND a link to pre-order them right on the Books Between post for this episode, #69, at MGBookVillage.com.  I’ve got your back, I know you’re busy, so it’s all right there for you. And as I’ve said before, I’ve come to really love pre-ordering - it helps out favorite authors and it’s like a little surprise to your future self.   Before we jump in, just remember that this is just a sampling of all the incredible books coming out this year. I’ll add some links to some other great resources in the show notes and on the website where you can find more complete listings of titles to browse through and the MGBookVillage website has a great release calendar so that’s one to bookmark for sure.   https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/111975.Middle_Grade_Novels_of_2019 http://novelnineteens.com/books/middle-grade-books https://mgbookvillage.org/2018releasedates/ http://www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com/2018/12/19-2019-middle-grade-books-to-have-on-your-radar/ https://www.readbrightly.com/middle-grade-books-2019/ https://www.bookish.com/articles/must-read-childrens-books-winter-2019/ http://www.popgoesthereader.com/target-audience-middle-grade/70-middle-grade-novels-i-cant-wait-to-read-in-2019/   Also - publication dates do occasionally change, so just be aware of that.   Alright, get your Goodreads tab open, or your library website pulled up, or your Amazon/Indiebound shopping cart ready, or ….. print out the show notes and bring it to your favorite local bookstore!   Alright - let’s get to it! The 2019 Graphic Novels This January, Lincoln Peirce, the author of Big Nate, has a new graphic/illustrated novel series set in the middle ages called Max and the Midknights that looks really, really cute. Also out on January 8th is Click by Kayla Miller - the story of 5th grader Olive who is having some trouble finding where she “clicks” in middle school. The sequel, called Camp, is being released this April so fans won’t have to wait long for the next one. A fantasy graphic novel that Mel Schuit recommended that I check out is The Chancellor and the Citadel by Maria Capelle Frantz so that’s on my radar now - and yours! Thank you, Mel! On January 29th another Hilo is coming our way! Hilo 5: Then Everything Went Wrong. And on that same day the 5th Bird & Squirrel is coming out called All Tangled Up. One graphic novel adaptation that has really piqued my interest is Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy: A Modern Retelling of Little Women by Rey Tercerio and illustrator Bre Indigo. The classic is reimagined as a blended family living in modern-day New York City. I don’t think I’ve ever hit “pre-order” faster and will be eagerly stalking my delivery person on February 5th for that one! My mailbox is going to be brimming on February 5th because I also HAD to preorder New Kid by Jerry Craft!  It’s about seventh grader Jordan Banks who loves drawing cartoons and dreams of going to art school. But his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school instead, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. Looks amazing!!  90-Second Newbery was singing its praises on Twitter last night and said this about it: “The amazing graphic novel New Kid by @JerryCraft should definitely be on everyone's tbr list and it has a full-cast (and all-star cast) audiobook released at the same time….perfect for rich, nuanced convos abt race, class, identity, school systems, how we share books, code switching, starting new school, just so much!”   So, yeah… I’ll just wait here for a bit while you hit pause and go order that! We also get  the second Wings of Fire graphic novel, The Lost Heir, on February 26th AND the second Mr. Wolf’s Class book called Mystery Club. And a heads up that the graphic novel of The Hidden Kingdom (Wings of Fire Book 3) is out in October 2019. For those Minecraft fans in your life, this March we get another Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior graphic novel - Forging Destiny. And for older middle grade kids - maybe 11 or 12 and up -  look for the new graphic novel adaptations of The Iliad and The Odyssey this March as well. And fans of Terri Libenson’s Invisible Emmie and Positively Izzie will want to get their hands on Just Jaime - coming out May7th. There were lots of smiles among my students today when I told them that news! Bad Guys #9 - The Bad Guys in the Big Bad Wolf is out June 25th.  Perfect launch for a fun summer read. This August brings us Best Friends, the sequel to Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham’s Real Friends -  out on August 27th. And have you seen the cover? It’s Shannon at the top of a rollercoaster with this vibrant purple background. Love it, love it, love it! And Dog Man fans (like my daughter) will be psyched this August because we are getting Dog Man #7: For Whom the Ball Rolls! The seventh graphic novel adaptation of the Baby-sitters Club, Boy Crazy Stacey, illustrated by Gale Carrigan, will be out September 3rd. That’s one of those no-brainer preorders for my classroom library. Also - I was interested to hear that R.J. Palacio is publishing her first graphic novel Wonder story this fall called White Bird. This one is Julian’s grandmother’s story about her life as a young Jewish girl hidden away by a family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. So be on the lookout for that one September 3rd as well. You want another don’t-even-have-to-think-about-it-just-preorder-it graphic novel? Guts - the long-awaited new Raina Telgemeier graphic memoir is out September 17th!! September also brings the latest from Tillie Walden - Are You Listening.  The peeks I’ve seen of that online look incredible, so that one is definitely on my radar this fall. And then….….. Drumroll please…… Mighty Jack and Zita the Spacegirl!! Ahhhh!!  I knew it! That last page in Mighty Jack and the Goblin King was just too good not to be followed up with a joint adventure. Yay! Jen Wang -  author of last year’s hit, The Prince & the Dressmaker, has a new graphic novel coming out in September called  Stargazing. This one draws on her personal experiences and is the story of two friends - Moon and Christine. And this November we’ll get The Midwinter Witch - the third and final book in the trilogy that includes The Witch Boy and The Hidden Witch. And - wow, I’m just going to start saving up now for September because the graphic novel adaptation of Kwame Alexander’s The Crossover is also coming out on September 24th!  It’s going to be a pancakes and ramen noodles for dinner kind of a month if I want to keep up with all these awesome books coming out!  (And I haven’t even gotten past the graphic novels!) And…. I think, maybe, possibly.. that Amulet #9 (the final one of the series) will be released late this year. But I can’t find much info on it. No title, no date, no synopsis - nada! So, I’m cautiously optimistic that it will arrive in 2019. Finally - another graphic novel to be on the lookout for later in 2019 is Twins by author Varian Johnson who you may know from The Parker Inheritance and illustrator Shannon Wright. The publication date isn’t yet announced, but apparently it’s about twin sisters struggling to figure out individual identities in middle school and it’s based on Johnson’s own childhood experiences as a twin. New Releases from 2017 / 2018 Debut Authors   Early February brings us the second in Anna Meriano’s Love, Sugar, Magic series called A Sprinkle of Spirits and oh is that cover gorgeous! And definitely snag a copy of the sequel to Jarrett Lerner’s EngiNerds - Revenge of the EngiNerds out on February 19th. It is EVEN FUNNIER than the first one. And that’s saying something! Another book I’m looking forward to is Jen Petro-Roy’s Good Enough - about a young girl with an eating disorder. Game of Stars by Sayantani DasGupta - the follow up to The Serpent’s Secret is out on February 26th. And the end of February also brings us Bone Hollow  by Skeleton Tree author Kim Ventrella. Also be on the lookout for The Hunt for the Mad Wolf’s Daughter by Diane Magras on March 5th. That sequel is getting rave reviews so it’s definitely one to add to your library. Alyson Gerber, author of Braced, will have a new novel out called Focused. It’s about a middle school girl who loves chess and has been recently diagnosed with ADHD. Definitely a book a lot of my students will be able to connect with! In the last week of April we get the sequel to Roshani Chokshi’s Aru Shah and the End of Time called Aru Shah and Song of Death This April brings us the second novel from Rebecca Donnelly called The Friendship Lie. One book I’m excited to dip into this spring is Up for Air by Laurie Morrison. You might know her from last year’s Every Shiny Thing. From the author of 2017’s The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora and 2018’s Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish comes Each Tiny Spark. This is Pablo Cartaya’s third MG novel and this one features a young girl, a father recently returned from deployment, and… welding. So look for that one in August. And The Cryptid Keeper, the sequel to Lija Fisher’s 2018 The Cryptid Catcher is out this August as is Melissa Sarno’s A Swirl of Ocean. In September comes the sequel to Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. It’s called Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus and follows Aven’s adventures as she heads into high school. At first I thought that might put it in the YA category, but from what I can tell, it’s still middle grade. This fall we’ll also be treated to Abby Cooper’s third novel - Friend or Fiction. Just like Sticks and Stones and Bubbles, this one is also magical realism. It’s about a girl named Jade. In the pages of her notebook, she writes all about Zoe--the most amazing best friend anyone could dream of. But when pretend Zoe appears in real life thanks to a magical experiment gone right, Jade isn't so sure if she likes sharing her imaginary friend with the real world.   Another treat in store for you this fall is the third novel by Elly Swartz - Give and Take. This book is about 12 year-old Maggie whose grandmother’s recent death has triggered her to start hoarding things under her bed. 2019 Debut Authors   So - I’ll just say right now that I could have had an ENTIRE show just dedicated to the amazing middle grade debuts coming our way this year but at some point, I had to cut myself off.  So - I’ll include a link to the Novel19s website where you find many more middle grade debuts and discover some of your new favorite authors.   The Whisperers is Greg Howard’s middle grade debut and one that has really caught my eye. Just listen to this description: “Eleven-year-old Riley believes in the whispers, magical fairies that will grant you wishes if you leave them tributes. Riley has a lot of wishes. He wishes bullies at school would stop picking on him. He wishes Dylan, his 8th grade crush, liked him, and Riley wishes he would stop wetting the bed. But most of all, Riley wishes for his mom to come back home.” Oooo…. This one is out January 15th. If you are looking for a new book for younger middle grade readers - something along the lines of Ramona Quimby or Stella Diaz - check out Meena Meets Her Match by Karla Manternatch. One book that keeps popping up into my radar is the middle grade debut of Padma Venkatraman called The Bridge Home about four children who discover strength and grit and family while dealing with homelessness. That one comes out Feb 5th so be on the lookout for that one. Another debut that I have been dying to read is The Simple Art of Flying by Cory Leonardo!  Let me just read you the teaser: “Born in a dismal room in a pet store, Alastair the African grey parrot dreams of escape to bluer skies. He’d like nothing more than to fly away to a palm tree with his beloved sister, Aggie. But when Aggie is purchased by twelve-year-old Fritz, and Alastair is adopted by elderly dance-enthusiast and pie-baker Albertina Plopky, the future looks ready to crash-land.”  My step-mother had parrots when I was growing up, so this one in particular I really am interested in reading! So I’ll be checking my mailbox for that one on February 12th. Another debut I am excited to read this year is Joshua Levy’s Seventh Grade vs. the Galaxy! Since one of my goals this year is to introduce my students to more science fiction, a story about a school on a spaceship orbiting Jupiter would be perfect! On March 12 we get Lisa Moore Ramée’s debut A Good Kind of Trouble about a girl who just wants to follow the rules. And sometime this spring we get rather the opposite in Bernice Buttman, Model Citizen by Niki Lenz. This one is about a “bully” who ends up living with her aunt who is a nun and tries to turn over a new leaf. This March is the debut of Julia Nobel with The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane about a girl who gets shipped off to a British boarding school and finds a box of medallions that might just be connected to the disappearance of her father. A graphic novel debut coming in March that looks fabulous is Red Panda & Moon Bear by Jarod Roselló. It’s about two Latinx kids who defend their neighborhood from threats both natural and supernatural. And in late April is the first book in a new MG detective series called Kazu Jones and the Denver Dognappers by Shauna Holyoak and a time-traveling action adventure that will transport readers to ancient Egypt called Jagger Jones & the Mummy’s Ankh by Malayna Evans. Hurricane Season by debut author Nicole Melleby comes out May 7th and oh how do I want to read this novel!  On a recent #MGLitChat focused on the 2019 debut authors, the moderator asked, “What do you hope young readers take away from your book?”  And Nicole Melleby said the following, “ I want them to take away that they’re not alone, that they’re seen, that mental illness is hard but manageable, and that love may have its limits, but help comes in all shapes and sizes. Also that Van Gogh was a brilliant man.”  After reading Vincent & Theo last summer - uhhh…. gimme that book!! Another great middle grade debut to look for on May 7th is Just South of Home by Karen Stong which is described as Blackish meets Goosebumps. The story follows a rule-abiding girl who must team up with her trouble making cousin, goofy younger brother, and his best friend to unravel a mysterious haunting in their tiny Southern town. Also coming this spring is a book that I immediately knew I wanted to read. It’s called Planet Earth is Blue by Nicole Panteleakos. (So, I was pretty much ALREADY sold by the Bowie reference.) The book follows Nova, an autistic, nonverbal, space-obsessed 12-year-old who is awaiting the Challenger shuttle launch and the return of her big sister, Bridget, as she struggles to be understood by her new foster family.  I was a 4th grader when The Challenger Disaster happened and vividly remember watching it happen live on tv, so I am really interested to see how that plays out in this book. Another debut to look for early this summer is All of Me by Chris Baron - a novel in verse about a 13 year old boy who is dealing with a big move, struggles in his parents’ marriage, and his own body image issues. So… if you are a close listener, you have probably figured out that I’m a sucker for books involving baking or cooking.  Maybe that’s why Midsummer’s Mayhem by Rajani LaRocca just leapt out at me when I stumbled across it last month. This is a contemporary-fantasy retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream about an 11 year old Indian American girl whose father is a food writer and whose mother is a successful businesswoman. But when she adds some rather…. unusual (and maybe magical?) ingredients to her baking, things get out of hand. So look for that one on June 4th. And if your kids are looking for a fun spooky read this summer, Ollie Oxley and the Ghost comes out on June 18th and looks really cute. It’s about a boy who moves to California and ends up becoming friends with a ghost from the Gold Rush era. Ghost Squad by Claribel Ortega is another paranormal middle grade coming this September and it’s described as Coco meets Stranger Things. So, uh… yeah...gimme that for sure! Also coming out this September is The Light in the Lake by Sarah Baughman - a book about a young girl who finds herself caught between her love of science and her late twin brother's belief in magic. Sequels and Favorite Series This January 29th we’re getting two awesome books: a 4th in the Crime Biters series - Fangs for Everything AND I Survived the Battle of D-Day, 1944 by Lauren Tarshis.  And watching out for another I Survived book in September called I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, 1919. Also in 2019 we are getting not one but TWO new Babysitting Nightmares books! The Phantom Hour this January 29th and The Twilight Curse on August 20th. February 5th brings another Stick Dog book - Stick Dog Gets the Tacos AND the third Frazzled book by Booki Vivat! This one is called Minor Incidents and Absolute Uncertainties. I just love her titles! In late February kids will be getting book 4 in the DC Comics Secret Hero Society - Science Fair Crisis! Lion Down by Stuart Gibb is out on February 26th. The second in his FunJungle series and the follow up to Panda-monium.) In March comes book five in The School for Good & Evil series: A Crystal of Time , a new Emily Windsnap novel called Emily Windsnap and The Pirate Prince, and another in the Fairy Tale Reform School series called Wished. In March we also get a seventh Jedi Academy Book called Revenge of the Sis. This one starts a new storyline and is written by Amy Ignatow with Jarret Krosoczka illustrating. And an as yet untitled 8th Jedi Academy novel is scheduled for September 2019. AND I’m really excited for the third BAT book: Bat and the End of Everything by Elana K. Arnold.  My daughter’s 4th grade class read the first book and they - of course! - fell hard for this series! Jeff Kinney fans will be excited about Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid - a book told from Rowley’s point of view that is out this April. And that month also brings us another Unicorn Rescue Society novel - The Chupacabras of the Rio Grande. And my 9 year old is going to be thrilled when I tell her that Katherine Applegate’s sequel to The Endling is coming out May 7th. It’s called Endling: The First and is already in my cart. The second book in Laura Ruby’s York series - The Clockwork Ghost is also headed our way this May and so is Another Fenway & Hattie book - In the Wild! Natalie Lloyd’s sequel to The Problim Children - Carnival Catastrophe is due to be out June 25th. And not quite a sequel but more of a spin-off, is Dough Boys by Paula Chase - author of 2018’s So Done. Characters Simp and Rollie are the leads in this novel told in two voices. Also - Karina Yan Glaser’s third Vanderbeekers novel is coming this September - The Vanderbeekers to the Rescue! And finally - just announced this morning - is Kate DiCamillo’s new novel coming September 24th - Beverly, Right Here. And if you guessed that this is the Beverly from Raymie Nightingale - then you are correct!  So now each of the three girls will have their own novel. By the way - if you haven’t seen it yet, the cover by Amy June Bates is stunning!!     2019 New Releases from Established Authors   First up here is the book I am devouring right now - The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart which just came out on January 8th. And oh…. does this book live up to its hype! Brace yourself to hear lots more about this one later! Also out this January is a book my friend Sandy has been raving about - The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, U.S.A by Coretta Scott King honor nominee Brenda Woods. So I definitely need to add that one to my TBR list. This January readers will get a new Gordon Korman novel - Unteachables AND a new Andrew Clements novel - The Friendship War. January also brings us the first book in the really incredible Rick Riordan Presents Imprint - Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee. This is a space opera about thirteen-year-old Min, who comes from a long line of fox spirits. (By the way - if you have kids who love Rick Riordan’s novels or who love adventure books with a dash of humor and myth - then check out his Imprint site. I’ll include a link in the show notes so you can check them all out. From those lucky enough to read advanced copies, I haven’t heard anything but praise.) Pink Hair and Other Terrible Ideas by Andrea Pyros is one to watch out for this February. And another upper middle grade February release that caught my attention is a joint novel told in letters by Counting by 7s author Holly Goldberg Sloan and The Interestings author Meg Wolitzer. It’s called To Night Owl from Dogfish and it’s about two very different 12 year-old girls named Averie and Bett who are sent off to the same sleepaway camp in order to bond after their single dads fall in love with each other. February also bring us another novel by Anne Urso (author of the critically acclaimed The Real Boy) This novel, The Lost Girl, is about identical twins Lark and Iris.   On March 5th we get another Lisa Graff novel called Far Away about a girl, CJ, whose aunt is a psychic medium who claims that she carries messages from the dead. And I’m really psyched for We’re Not From Here by Tapper Twins author Geoff Rodkey. This novel is also out March 5th and is about refugees from planet Earth who need to find a new home on a faraway planet. I had the opportunity to read an ARC of this one and it’s quirky and hilarious… and timely. Definitely add this one to your pre orders. March also brings us another Rick Riordan Present’s book called Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez. I’ve been hearing lots of great buzz about this one, so I’ll definitely need to pre-order a copy. On March 19th we get a new Kevin Henkes novel called Sweeping Up the Heart and this one is the story of the spring break that changes seventh-grader Amelia Albright’s life forever. In late March Natalie Lloyd fans will be treated to Over the Moon - a story about twelve-year-old Mallie who lives in a mining town where boys leave school at 12 to work in the mines, and girls leave to work as servants for the wealthy. But of course with that quintessentially Lloyd magic interwoven. And another Cynthia Lord book is coming out this March! She is the author of Rules and A Handful of Stars. This one is titled Because of the Rabbit and is about a young girl who starts public school for the first time after being homeschooled. Where the Heart Is by Jo Knowles is coming out April 2nd and a really interesting looking book called Summer of a Thousand Pies by Margaret Dilloway will be released April 16th. It’s about a girl who has to save her aunt’s pie shop. I think this one would be  a winner for kids who enjoy shows like The Great British Baking Show. In early May, we get to read Lynda Mullaly Hunt’s next novel, Shouting at the Rain about a girl named Delsie who lives with her grandmother, loves tracking weather, and who starts to wish for a more “regular” family and life. You can’t go wrong with the author of Fish in a Tree and One for the Murphys so… just pop this one in your cart now! And another novel that is getting all kinds of early buzz is the latest from K.A. Reynolds called Spinner of Dreams. It’s being called “inventive, empathetic, and strange in all the best ways.”  Plus - it has a really otherworldly cover that I just want to stare at... And finally - I know you all have heard me rave about this one before - but Barbara Dee’s Maybe He Just Likes You is going to be AMAZING!  My students and I got the chance to read the first chapter and we were all already hooked. But let me give you a little taste from the teaser: “For seventh grader Mila, it starts with an unwanted hug on the school blacktop. The next day, it’s another hug. A smirk. Comments. It all feels…weird. According to her friend Zara, Mila is being immature, overreacting. Doesn’t she know what flirting looks like? They don’t understand why Mila is making such a big deal about the boys’ attention. When Mila is finally pushed too far, she realizes she can’t battle this on her own–and finds help in some unexpected places.” I can’t WAIT!!   Phew!!  Alright - I am both energized and - I gotta be honest - a little daunted! But - I am reminding myself and I hope you’ll remember too that it’s not about a mad dash to read all of these books. But to give you a taste of what’s to come so you can match readers with books they might like and get them excited about new releases.   I hope you have a wonderful year reading and I would love to know - what are the books that you and your students are most looking forward to in 2019?   You can email me at booksbetween@gmail.com or jump into the conversation on Twitter/Instagram at the handle @Books_Between.      Closing   Thank you so much for joining me this week.  You can find an outline of interviews and a full transcript of all the other parts of our show at MGBookVillage.org.   And, if you have an extra minute this week, reviews on iTunes or Stitcher are much appreciated.   Books Between is a proud member of the Lady Pod Squad and the Education Podcast Network.
