My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DR Shores, author of the book Shallow Stock. Raised on the Yorkshire coastline in the United Kingdom, D R Shores studied engineering prior to a twenty-five year career in business. Literature has always been a passion, with a taste ranging from Sigrid Nunez and Thomas Harris to established twentieth-century classics from Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ayn Rand and Milan Kundera. Now living with his family and introverted dog in the east midlands area of England, his other interests include music, current affairs, volunteering and keeping fit. In my book review, I stated Shallow Stock is a suspense thriller that will keep you reading well into the wee hours of the morning! I loved the story and the intricate plotlines. As an author, I was also intrigued by how all the threads came together in the end. The story has a Hatfield and McCoy vibe. Two families are at 'war' and have been for several generations. They each own a competing corporation and work tirelessly to out do one another. Wynter McGlynn is the CEO of one. Julian Dayton is the CEO of the other. Both currently have issues holding onto their positions of power and see the other as their biggest obstacle. The competition is fierce, but is it fair? And what happens when the finger pointing starts? From black tie balls to crooked politicians to a city-wide triathlon to human trafficking to board meetings to interesting family dynamics, this book will lead you down a road you won't want to miss. And even when you think you've gotten the very last surprise, Shores finds a way to offer you a tidbit more. It's a great read! My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is D Werkmeister, author of the book Volk. Born and raised in Nebraska, Darin Werkmeister now lives outside of Philadelphia PA, where he was an FBI street agent for 21 years. During that time, he investigated White Collar Crime, Organized Crime, Money Laundering, and Domestic Terrorism. While in Philadelphia, he was an eight-year member of the FBI SWAT team. Prior to the FBI he was a Marine Corps officer. VOLK is his first novel. In my book review, I stated Volk is an FBI thriller with a shapeshifter. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure what I would think about this novel and told Darin that I might not be his audience - werewolves are just not my thing. However, his characters are so strong and engaging, and the storyline so realistic (despite the werewolves), that I couldn't put it down. Terri Watson is the main FBI agent. She is working the case of her career when she sees the beast. But who can she tell? Imagine seeing a werewolf and trying to explain that to your boss. Instead, Terri takes matters into her own hands, and the result is ... let's just say a great twist to the normal FBI thriller story! I enjoyed that we see things from Terri's point of view as well as the wolf's. And Darin made it easy by making all of the wolf's thoughts in first person, present tense. It was rather spooky to be in the head of a werewolf, but this change in POV and tense really added to the story. If you love a good thriller/suspense, even if you don't normally go for shapeshifters, I think you'll love this book. I know I did! Rob interviews author, Deborah Lambert, about her high fantasy book series, "Son of No Man". About Deborah Lambert: At a young age, Deborah's rampant imagination kept her up, lending great detail to all the terrible things lurking in the night. In desperation one night, her mother suggested she invent her own stories to distract her brain. How about a YA Fantasy adventure that combines travel (especially in eastern countries and other worlds) with superpowers! Put out through Tyndale's Wander imprint, the Beacon Hill Series by D. J. The Beacon Hill series (or at least the school/friend group) was inspired by D. J. Williams' own youth living in Hong Kong. Add to that extensive travel throughout the world (don't miss his elephant story while on location in Zambia!) and you've got a background that can offer a thrilling ride! I can't wait to read these books and they're on their way to my house as I type, so eeep! One thing I noticed when I read the synopsis of Secrets of the Highlands (book two--available and book 3 comes out later this year) is that it reads a bit like a tabletop role-playing game come to life! The whole quest and trying to find a healer thing really caught my eye (having attempted to play said games and failing miserably! LOL). But D. J. Williams has written more than just the Beacon Hill series. He also has his adult thrillers and a new series he just started working on, so I think we're in for a long, literary ride with this guy. I can't wait to get started. Hunt for Eden's Star by D. J. Williams Discover the story of an intrepid, globe-trotting teen and a motley group of friends in a world where choices have epic consequences. In this new coming-of-age YA fantasy novel full of action-packed adventure, Williams tells the tale of a teen who is thrown into a world of ancient secrets when he discovers a supernatural artifact that protects a weapon of mass destruction. With the help of a diverse group of friends, he embarks on a global adventure, seeking the truth about his sister's death. He uncovers two clandestine, supernatural societies waging an epic, hidden war that threatens the future of civilization. As Jack races to collect ancient artifacts critical to the survival of the world, readers are transported to incredible international locales across Asia, including the lush jungles of the Philippines and the high-energy streets of Hong Kong. Themes of addiction, revenge, faith, and friendship emerge as Jack battles literal and psychological demons, and even his own friends and family members, on his quest to thwart the forces of evil. In this novel, you will find: Relatable characters Clean and compelling YA fantasy The first in a series—more exciting material to come! D. J. Williams's suspenseful, page-turning style whisks readers into a wildly exciting, supernatural adventure that grabs hold of the imagination and never lets go. “Fast-paced action and a rich setting boost the beginning of a promising paranormal saga.” - Kirkus Reviews on Hunt for Eden's Star “A blistering, high-stakes, fast-paced supernatural thriller that's impossible to put down.” - Ryan Steck, author of Fields of Fire Learn more about D. Author D.P. Behling discusses his new series, Josh & Sen Save the Multiverse. In the first book, The Path of One, two unlikely friends, one human and the other immortal, are thrown together to try to accomplish the impossible—rescue Josh's four-year-old daughter, stop a genocidal soul-harvester, and save the multiverse. Dave's inspirations include video games, sci fi fandoms, mythology, the difficult job of parenting, and the recent pandemic. Despite the sweeping and sometimes serious nature of this series, Dave's favorite aspect of writing it was working humor into the stories.

Host James Lott Jr read Number ONE Bestseller 2442 Steps to Crazy: The Beginning and was left speechless. He chats with the Author and survivor D Paul Fleming. The GREATEST survival story you'll ever read. One young boy must stand up to the evil force that has found its way into their home. At the age of five, the boy learns to hold his breath while he's tucked away in the dark, listening as Crazy paces through the farmhouse like an unholy predator, searching, just steps away from his hiding place. But even being very good at hiding doesn't always keep you safe. Amidst brutal beatings, violent screaming, and cruelly imaginative abuse, the boy discovers that he has a special connection with the spiritual realm. He sees beings of light and dark that his brother can't see—beings that bring waves of comfort, beings that he knows are there to protect him and his siblings. And, yet, no one comes to rescue the boy and his siblings. The cops come and go, leaving them in the grips of the unholy terror. Even his mother, strong as her love is for her children, remains unable to vanquish the villain. It's up to the boy, then, not only to survive, but to find a way to overcome fear every single day. Only through faith can this boy triumph over fear and make it out alive. Mr Fleming is a Retired 100% Disabled Navy Veteran. Jude: Contending for the Faith For those of you who like to read ahead and prepare for Sunday worship, this week we will begin a new series in the book of Jude. Author D.J. Rowston once wrote that Jude is the “most neglected book in the New Testament.” The little book of Jude is often neglected because of several factors. The book of Jude is relatively short. In America, we are tempted to equate worth and importance with size. Since the book is short, many assume (wrongly) the book is unimportant. The book is tucked away in the latter part of the Bible and easy to miss. People do not stumble into studying the book of Jude. They must go looking for it. The message of the book is perceived as “negative.” Jude spends the majority of his time warning against false teachers and their impending destruction. The message of judgment and condemnation drives many readers away. For these reasons, Jude often gets overlooked by Christians and pastors alike. We are convinced that the neglect of Jude is a serious mistake for our spiritual lives and the health of our church. Jude warns against false teachers, a reminder that is just as necessary now as it was when Jude originally penned his letter. Furthermore, Jude encourages Christians to remain in God's love by building themselves up, praying in the Holy Spirit, and waiting for the mercy of the Lord Jesus. Jude's message of warning and encouragement is needed in the church today. We must pick up the book of Jude, study it, and live out it's truths for the glory of God! Week 1 – “A Call to Fight” (v. 1-4) Contextual Questions on Jude v. 1-4: Jude, along with the apostle James, was Jesus's half-brother. How does he introduce himself in v.1? Why do you think he chose to introduce himself in this way? What customary information is lacking about the recipients of Jude's letter? How does he identify them instead? (v. 1) What was Jude's purpose in writing the letter? (v. 3) Why was it so urgent for Jude to write on this subject rather than on “our common salvation” as he had originally planned? (v. 3) What is meant by “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints”? (v. 3) Was the threat to the integrity of the faith coming from inside or outside the church? (v. 4) How were these “ungodly people” undermining the faith? What important tenets/aspects were they subverting? (v. 4) Application Questions: 1. Just like the un-named Christians of Jude's day, we too are being called to contend for the faith. This call to contend (meaning “to strenuously fight to defend”) implies that i) we are in a battle, and ii) the faith is being attacked. • In what ways do you think that the faith is being attacked today? How do you think the true Christian faith is under attack or being undermined in some church movements or teachers in the world today? • What weapons are at our disposal as we contend for the faith? What are some of the things in life that you are willing to fight for? Why? Why is it important that we be willing to fight for the faith with the same (indeed, greater) passion and commitment as for these other things?
D. Watkins is tired of the lies. Lies about being tough, about not feeling pain or loss or rejection. In his latest book, ‘Black Boy Smile: A Memoir in Moments,' Watkins shows how he learned to face those lies and push through to the truth. He hopes everyone, especially young Black men and boys, find that strength from his stories On April 12th, D. Watkins will be in conversation with author Shanita Hubbard at Enoch Pratt Free Library. They will be discussing Hubbard's debut book, “Ride or Die: A Feminist Manifesto for the Well-Being of Black Women.” This interview originally aired on August 1, 2023.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
To any outsider, D. Neil Elliott was highly educated, owned a profitable consulting firm, and had a successful career and an amazing wife and family. But things were not all they seemed to be … Neil was facing a lot of challenges. In a phrase, he was in a dark place. Quite by accident, he discovered a Higher Road. As he traveled that road, he found the key to transforming his life. Over the course of the following year, Neil lifted himself to an inner state of love, peace, joy, and abundance. His perspectives on life changed entirely. His troubles and tribulations were his impetus to find the key that enabled him to revolutionize his life. He learned that the search for a better life does not entail positive thinking, saying affirmations, chanting mantras, or traveling to India to sit at the feet of a guru—or any other popularized method of “finding yourself.” …The key? To ascend in both spiritual perception and truth, you need to use the right process to break through your entrenched, human-ego barriers. For nearly three decades, Neil read hundreds of self-help and spiritual books and took self-development courses. All of them offered hope for change and improvement, but nothing fulfilled his needs or genuinely delivered on its promises. Neil's desire—and his new mission in life—is to share the knowledge he gained and the process he used on his journey to self-awareness, together with the blueprint document he discovered that was instrumental in transforming his life. He wants to give you, regardless of your station in life, the tools and opportunity to empower yourself, transform your life, and draw peace, joy, love, and prosperity into your personal situation and environment. Neil believes that as more and more people follow this Higher Road to true spiritual perfection, a New Era of Love and Peace will dawn for everyone throughout the world. Some say humans learns best through story, and when you look at the history of dogs in folklore, you see plenty of evidence. One story about one single dog can influence the way humans feel about dogs – or that type of dog – for years, decades, centuries, even millenia. For thousands of years, seeing seeing a black dog was a good sign, a helpful warning from the spiritual world … or something quite sinister. Author D.S. Nelson calls forth some ancient stories so we moderns can see just how far we've come. Or have we? Dr. Stanley Coren pitches in with a thoroughly contemporary tale of a vicar's wife who saw a ghostly dog figure and attributed a death to it. New folklore tales like this have impact on the daily life of millions of black dogs. Superstitious human folk are not lost to the mists of time, as folklorist Mark Norman reminds us. Of course, some folklore is positive, like the guardian dogs you find in tales throughout the centuries, and even in contemporary literature. Why, even Disney's eternally popular Lady & The Tramp is based on a folk tale about a loyal Welsh hound. Folklorist Ceallaigh MacCath-Moran weighs in with insight about how folklore is created every day in unusual ways. For example, every episode of Dog Edition creates lore … so listen today, and every week, to find out what tall tails future humans will tell. RISE FROM STUCK -- Get Unstuck, Christian Author, Take Consistent Action, Be More Productive
Rise from Stuck Warrior, I've got author DK Drake here with me today. It's really easy to have her on the show because, well, she is me. D.K. Drake is my pen name, and the short story I'm about to share is the origin of that pen name. Why do I use a pen name? Several reasons. One, to humble my pride. I don't want to be obsessed with seeing my name on the cover of a book. And two, DK Drake is a lot easier to say and spell than Bonnie Jean Schaefer, plus it sounds more like a fantasy author than my given name. So what does DK stand for? Darcy Kimberly. So why Darcy Kimberly? Well, I needed to come up with the name of the main character for the story I'm sharing today. My older, bolder sister's name is Marcy, and I wanted my character to be bold like my sister, so I replaced the M with the D and named her Darcy. As for the K, my boss at the time was also a graphic designer, and she designed the first cover of the first fantasy novel I wrote. Her name is Kimberly, and I threw the K in there to honor her part in the genesis of my fantasy writing career. Then I threw Drake in the mix to bring out the alliteration of the D and the K. And at the time I wrote the story, I had only published one novel that was a complete flop. I thus wanted to get into the head of a successful novelist, so I made the main character a bestselling author in search of an idea for her next book. Notice in the story that she doesn't have a last name. All I knew at the time was that her name was Darcy. After readers enjoyed the story, I decided to write a fantasy series based on the dragon stalker concept I created for the story, and that's when I added the K and Drake. I wanted to let her be the author of the series. Now I wrote the story at the prompting of friends who kept harassing me to write a story about cops and a story about dragons. To make both of those friends happy, I wrote Cops, Robbers…and Dragons? If you want to read along as I read, you can snag a copy as part of the DK Drake starter library at AuthorDKDrake.com. We all want to protect our kids from dangerous things, but too much protection can leave our children feeling unsure of themselves and afraid in the world. In this episode, Dr. Jeffrey Olrick and Amy Olrick talk about new ways to consider the real dangers kids face and how opportunities to overcome manageable amounts of trouble can help kids grow strong and reduce anxiety in the long run. Author D.L. Mayfield and her husband, therapist and author Krispin Mayfield, join the conversation to discuss how they balance the desire for safety with Christ's call to love and engage with our neighbors. Exposing their kids to new things while keeping communication open has helped build their whole family's confidence and resilience.
