In our first ever guest episode of Bean to Barstool, New Zealand beer and chocolate journalist Luke Owen Smith interviews Phoebe Preuss of Living Koko. They talk about Living Koko's relationship with Samoan cacao farmers and Savai'i Koko. They also discuss Penina, Living Koko's non-alcoholic beer brewed brewed in collaboration with Brewicolo and made with cacao and hopped with Citra, Amarillo, and Ekuanot hops. I interviewed Luke back in Episode 37 to talk about beer and chocolate in New Zealand, and he's also shown up on the last couple year end episodes to share his favorite beers and chocolates of 2022 and 2023. In the latter, one of his favorite beers of last year was Penina. I knew I wanted Living Koko on the show, and Luke seemed like the perfect person to make that happen. It's always fun to try the house beer. Danish brewery Dry & Bitter has released a West Coast IPA called Chrome Chrysalis. Dry hopped with Columbus, Ekuanot, Motueka and Wai-iti hops, it's got some tropical notes with a bit of maltiness.  #beer #craftbeer #drinks #ipa #amberlager #lager #westcoastipa

“The forest is not a resource for us, it is life itself. It is the only place for us to live.” –Evaristo Nugkuag Ikanan Welcome back to HomeBrew RockStars Episode 66. Unlike our last episode (#65) where we recorded from Kent’s porch we are back in the Batcave… Home Sweet Home! This is part one of a two part episode where we revisit (has been almost 2 years?!) with the creators of Urban Forest Craft Brewing, but unlike last time, we’ll be discussing their long anticipated grand opening, AND...in thick of a pandemic. You just can’t make this stuff up. We sampled a VERY appropriate commercial beer from Ale Asylum of Madison WI called FVCK COVID 2.0. They get a wink of approval on this on as they incorporated the ‘V’ in COVID instead of a ‘U’ to get this through the federal label review process. A pleasant and sessionable (5% ABV) hazy IPA featuring Idaho 7, Ekuanot, and Trident hops. The brewery refers to it as a “Hazy American Pale Ale” and the flavor profile is described as being soft and bright. Brent shared with us his home brew Pale Ale creation featuring Amarillo hops as flavoring and aroma, a tasty treat as always. Alex and Heath brewers/owners of Urban Forest brought some crowlers of various beers for us to try, the first being a real nice pilsner named Glass Slipper at a very reasonable 4.8% ABV. This is a beer you can enjoy all afternoon or evening without getting blasted. We also played a game trying to guess which COVID beer names are ‘real’ or ‘fake’, as usual Sears did horrible (LOL!) Big thanks to our program sponsors Pig Minds Brewing, Artale & Co, and 815 Gardens and Brewing for all their suds and support, we love you guys! In this episode of the Hop And Brew School® Podcast, Justin Crossley and Nick Zeigler are joined by the infamous Jason Perrault from Yakima Chief Ranches. Jason and his team at their family farm are responsible for helping to bring many of the most famous and popular hops to market over the years, including brands such as Simcoe®, Mosaic®, Warrior®, Ekuanot®, and more! To help us learn about the life cycle of hops, Jason walks us through what factors hop breeders must take into account and grapple with when developing new hop strains. Things like yield, pest resistance, and even the varying harvest windows of select strains, only begin to scratch the surface during the long life cycle of a new hop being brought to market. Jason dives further into some of the specific varieties that have passed through his program throughout the years, and even gives us a glimpse of what we might expect to see in the future. This episode is a brewers dream if you're looking to understand more about the agricultural lifecycle of your brewing ingredients and how much science, creativity and sheer effort goes into getting them to you. What? You haven’t heard of HR1 For the People Act? You know, the first major piece of legislation being put forward by the new Democratic House majority focused on anti-corruption and voting rights? Hmmm. I wonder why? Oh, that’s right, House Democrats decided to devote this week to going after Ilhan Omar for what some claimed to be anti-semitic comments. But, as both Sam Seder from the Majority Report and Ben Ehrenreich writing in the New Republic argued this week, there is quite a gap between what people are accusing Omar of saying and what she actually said. After sparking internal party chaos, Pelosi and House Democrats decide on a resolution condemning all anti-semitism and hate, not directly censuring Omar. [resolution here] HR1 voted on today (and passed!), but don’t expect to see much about it in the corporate media. Paul Manafort doesn’t get 19-24 years in prison as called for in federal sentencing guidelines; he gets a slap on the wrist instead. Judge says Manafort has lived an “otherwise blameless life.”  AOC says the light sentence for Manafort only underscores what most Americans already suspect, that "In our current broken system, 'justice' isn't blind, it's bought." Trump seems to be relishing in the idea of discrediting the 2020 elections well before the campaign shifts into high gear. And Brad DeLong, a Clinton-era neoliberal centrist, says it’s time to turn over the reins of the part to democratic socialists. How about that. PA GOP turns to Facebook to use the dust up over Ilhan Omar’s comments to attack Summer Lee. How far left is too left?  Old white Pennsylvania Democrats are concerned that Trump may win 2020 if the party goes too far to the left. Russ Diamond wants to end daylight savings as we know it. That will focus on the Lunar Gateway, AI, and deep-space robotics.  And, China set to build the world's first solar power station in space. Free Will set to release the first in its new “brewers series” on Saturday. This week it’s a Cream Ale, highlighting a favorite recipe designed and brewed by Free Will’s own Hannah Gohde.
