The devil took the hindmost with this confusing sorta-sequel to everyone's favorite "opera." Join Alex and Daisha as they strap into this carnival ride of a musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies." The Broadway Babies are up to their usual shenanigans with the additional tasks of detangling this confusing plot, comparing the sequel to "Phantom of the Opera," and giving their final verdict on the 2012 Australian production. Is this musical a dud, or does it need one more new production team in the mix? Cast recording: Amazon | Spotify | Apple Music Video recording: BroadwayHD | Amazon Songs: "Til I Hear You Sing," performed by Ben Lewis "Beneath a Moonless Sky," by Ben Lewis and Anna O'Byrne "Dear Old Friend," by Anna O'Byrne, Simon Gleeson, Sharon Millerchip and Maria Mercedes "Love Never Dies," by Anna O'Byrne Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Glenn Slater and Charles Hart Produced by The Really Useful Group Ltd., under exclusive license to Polydor Limited to release. Show Notes: A story of the show for NPR from before it debuted in London. Could "Love Never Dies" come to Broadway? Because the tour did well? Let's guess! ALW and The Wizard of Oz ... as he talks to the New York Times about why he thinks the show didn't go well and what he planned next in 2012 (aka a puff piece). The show's 'World Tour' website seems pretty dry...but you can get on the waitlist! "Like the Phantom himself, this new show lives in anguish, yearning to reveal itself and be loved." Oh boy... ALW loves having popular singers do singles of his big songs. Barbra, this ain't. Who is your fave Christine? Sierra and ALW performing the title song! Broadway Bullet: Theatre from Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond.
With two shows running on Broadway, Glenn Slater is excited that the sequel to Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies is finally hitting America on a national tour. The current go-to lyricist for two heavy-hitting composers stops by to tell us all about it. Aedin Moloney is in The Irish Rep's production of James Joyce's The Dead 1904. She stops by to talk about the show, her company Fallen Angel, and why Irish playwrights are so popular. This One's for the Girls, a reworking of Respect, is a hit running off-Broadway. Creater and bookwriter Dr. Dorothy Marcic talks about how this musical emerged from a sociology project about how women have been represented in popular music.

This week, we discuss a song that Al didn't write, but he performed. Why? Because it's going to be on the Medium Rarities album. Also, David's real-life brother is back to lend a hand with his vast background in music! Also, to quote Andrew: "If Weird Al had a cult, we're, like, the priests." Glenn Slater is a lyricist who collaborates with Alan Menken and other musical theatre composers. He was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Original Score for the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid at the Tony Awards in 2008, and another Tony nomination for Sister Act at the 65th Tony Awards in 2011. His first work with Alan Menken was writing the lyrics for the film Home on the Range and the stage production Sister Act the Musical. He wrote the lyrics for the stage adaptation of Disney's The Little Mermaid. He also worked with Menken on the new musical version of Leap of Faith. He has also composed the lyrics and co-wrote the book for the major Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Love Never Dies. In 2015 he worked again with Andrew Lloyd Webber for the Broadway musical School of Rock. Adding to his career as a lyricist, Slater wrote the lyrics for the songs in Disney's Tangled. I got to sit down with the lyricist of School of Rock, Little Mermaid, A Bronx Tale and more to learn how he built his career as well as . . . Why he stopped trying to compose for the theater and started writing lyrics instead (a great lesson for anyone trying to figure out what they want to do in this biz). How working in advertising made him a better writer. Just how he got in a room with Alan Menken, before he was anyone. Why he never listens to the cast recordings of his shows. How he adjusts his style depending on the composer he’s working with, and how he likes to work Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices.
