Cohan Entertainer of the Year Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  And in 2020, the American Library of Congress inducted the song “YMCA” into the National Recording Registry, which preserves audio recordings considered to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."   In addition to his work with the Village People, our guest has had a great solo music career, recording singles including “Trail of Tears”, "We're Still Here," “Red Hawk Woman”, "Going Back to My Roots," “Dance Again” - and now, his brand new single, “That's What You Are”.    This single, which was released on June 21, is now available on every major music streaming platform.  Our guest has won 5 Native American Music Awards and in 2008, he was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To learn more about Felipe Rose, go to:https://www.feliperose.com/https://www.facebook.com/FelipeRoseFanClubhttps://www.instagram.com/feliperoseofficial/https://twitter.com/FelipeRoseFanc1https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsFswLfPoVnj3U2IX9ijlAghttps://www.tiktok.com/@feliperoseofficial #FelipeRose    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Book Vs. Movie: La Cage Aux Folles & The BirdcageThe Original Film and Broadway Musical Vs. the 1996 FilmThe “Month of Musicals” continues with the 1996 film The Birdcage, which took its influence from the play turned into Broadway musical La Cage Aux Folles. The original 1973 french play takes place in Saint-Tropez, where a gay couple meets an ultra-conservative family member. It was a huge hit in Paris, playing for over a year in 1973, and was made into a film in 1978. Originally written by Jean Poiret, the original played in Paris for over 1800 performances with Poiret and Michell Serrault as the leads Georges and Albin, aka “Zaza.” The 1978 film had Italian actor Ugo Tognazzi as the lead playing Renato Baldi to Serrault's Albin. It played to art houses across America. Poiret wanted to film the American version of the film, so he refused to sell the rights to the play but had no problem selling it as a musical. Grease producer Allan Carr helped bring the project to Broadway as a musical, with Harvey Fierstein writing the book. Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly & Mame) was a revered lyricist and songwriter who provided the music. Director Arthur Laurents helped to make the 1983 production a massive success, with the song “I Am What I Am” becoming a gay anthem. It's important to remember what the culture was like in 1984, and having a gay married couple running a drag nightclub being the protagonists was a huge deal in the Queer community. The idea that 40 years later, we have to fight ugly stereotypes about gay people and drag culture is dispiriting, but we are allies who will sing the work's praises. AND point out the hypocrisy happening in the news cycles today. The original production won the 1984 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, and in 2004, Best Revival of a Musical. (And in 2010 as well!) No less than comedy powerhouses Elaine May and Mike Nichols wrote and directed the 1996 filmed nonmusical adaptation, which stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as Arman and Albert Goldman. They run the most popular club in Miami and live with their housekeeper Agador (Hank Azaria). Their son Val (ugh--this character is the one bad spot in an otherwise joyous film) wants to marry his college girlfriend. Still, her parents are conservatives who fear his senate run will be badly affected by being associated with “that lifestyle.” (Some of this is dated and distressingly familiar.)Which did we like better between the previous versions of the story and the 1996 film? In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of La Cage Aux FollesThe era of the 80s and how gay people were played in pop cultureThe work of Nichols & MayThe cast of the 1996 Movie: Robin Williams (Armand,) Nathan Lane (Albert,) Gene Hackman (Senator Kevin Keeley,) Dianne Weist (Louise Keeley,) Dan Futterman (Val Goldman,) Calista Flockhart (Barbara Keeley,) Hank Aazaria (Agador Spartacus,) and Christine Baranski as Katharine Archer. The cast of the original Broadway show: George Hearn (Albin,) Gene Barry (Georges,) and John Weiner as Jean Michel.Clips used:Albert rehearses with ArmandThe Birdcage 1996 trailer George Hearn 1984 Tony Awards Awards “I Am What I Am”Albert rehearses with his “love goddess.”“Mrs. Coleman” shows upMusic: The Goldman Girls We Are Family Book Vs. "Working online is not the future; it's today."These words from John Monks, the co-founder of facilitation and coaching practice Curve, will resonate powerfully with many listeners of episode #39 of The Coach's Journey Podcast who, like John, have been bringing people together in an era of change.John, who along with Lizzie Shupak wrote Closer Apart, the definitive guide to running online workshops, wants the world to understand the problem-solving power of online facilitation, and to believe anything is possible in that setting.John's career has been driven by one question: how do people work together? That question led to the foundation of Curve, and an ambition to work with the most senior people in the largest organisations in the world. In our conversation, he describes how he and his co-founders achieved that ambition while still showing up as themselves, in order to truly connect with the people they encounter in their workshops. In this episode, we talk about:How to read the room when you're working onlineThe energy journey that workshop participants make, and how to manage itHow to ensure equal share of voice and unlock successful outcomes in workshopsThe power of team coaching to unlock blockages in communicationHow leaders can generate the feelings they need in order to lead effectivelyWe also talk about how to bring unusual ideas into large-scale organisations with confidence and clarity. To learn more about John, visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnmonkscurve/ For information about my wider work, my writing or to buy my books, visit www.robbieswale.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. As children of the Sexual Revolution most of us were weaned on Ms. Magazine, La Cage Au Folle, (I Am What I AM), Gertrude Stein, and the understanding of Lord Douglas' poem ending with the words, "I am the love that dare not speak its name." And though the poem was written in 1892 Hollywood still seems to struggle with sex and sexuality. Is Hollywood more concerned with eroticizing and exoticizing sexuality? Are there films and TV shows that get it right?. Join us to discuss the ones who get it right and those who get it wrong.

Party Favorz has quite possibly the most extensive series of mixes dating back to the 70s till the present day of any podcast out there and I'm always surprised at how well various sets perform. This series has outperformed even my wildest expectations. I've been hitting on these classics of varying genres and different time periods for quite some time, each new rollout is like a new discovery for many of you. I cannot recommend enough that if you're new to Party Favorz that you spend some time exploring what this site has to offer beyond just going chronologically through the posts. The site is fairly easy to navigate through the categories and sub-categories. There are over 800 podcasts in total that are still available on the site (not through the streaming services). I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what's underneath the hood once you spend some time looking around. That being said, volume 4 continues with the re-energized mixes from the 80s and 90s gay anthem Hi-NRG Classics. You'll notice I went with the Hannah Jones version of "I Am What I Am" as the Gloria Gaynor version felt dated. Jennifer Holliday's "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" re-sung the vocals for the Almighty mix but it still stands up quite well. There are three different versions by Almighty, but I went with the one that could easily be dropped in the middle of the set. The fabulous Katherine Ellis, who has been MIA for a while is making a comeback relatively soon (yes, I've already got the promos), delivers a searing rendition of the Gwen Guthrie 80s classic "Ain't Nothin Going On but the Rent," turning it into an explosive dance floor stomper with 7th Heaven's signature all over it. You'll also notice that the 1981 Lime NRG classic is a rare re-worked version that is one of the earliest Almighty mixes they ever laid down. It has the signature early 90's house sound that updated the original for that period. Frankly, I think it still holds together quite nicely. I want to thank Marshall for helping me track this down as the quality of the version I had was sub-par. I also went with Sarah Washington's searing rendition of "I Will Always Love You," which was released well before Clive Davis commissioned Hex Hector to rework Whitney's massive hit several years after its original release. Sarah went on to have a massive hit with the Hex Hector produced "Heaven" by the end of the decade that's a staple in DJ circles to this day. Due to the fact that I've been hitting on these classics of varying genres and different time periods for quite some time, each new rollout is like a new discovery for many of you. I cannot recommend enough that if you're new to Party Favorz that you spend some time exploring what all this site has to offer beyond just going chronologically through the posts. The site is fairly easy to navigate through the categories and sub-categories. There are over 800 podcasts in total that are still available on the site (not through the streaming services). I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what's underneath the hood once you spend some time looking around. That being said, volume 4 continues with the re-energized mixes of 80's and 90's gay anthem  Hi-NRG Classics. The fabulous Katherine Ellis, who has been MIA for a while is making a comeback relatively soon (yes, I've already got the promos), delivers a searing rendition of the Gwen Guthrie 80's classic "Ain't Nothin Going On but the Rent," turning it into an explosive dance floor stomper with 7th Heaven's signature all over it. You'll also notice that the 1981 Lime NRG classic is a rare re-worked version that is actually one of the earliest Almighty mixes they ever laid down. Finally, I close out the set with the early 80's re-work of the Ashford & Simpson penned tune "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," which was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell but turned into a massive hit in the early 70's for Diana Ross' debut solo album. In this case, Inner Life did the honors featuring the uncredited vocals of Jocelyn Brown, who happens to be one of our Diva Hall of Fame entrants. I want to thank Darren H. for his generous donation. Just please keep in mind, I really need the money starting in April when the hosting comes up for renewal. I plan on going back to Siteground as they are hands-down the best provider I've ever worked with. Finally, I want to thank everyone that has made Party Favorz a continued success. I cannot believe I'm in my 12th year doing what I enjoy and being able to share my love for dance music to likeminded people. You really are the people that keep me motivated and plowing through. I'll likely be back by the end of the week or next with a couple of re-entries into the Diva Hall of Fame. Until then...ENJOY! Album: Hi-NRG Gay Anthems volume 4 Genre: Hi-NRG, Dance, Gay Anthems Year: 2019 Total Time: 02:27:41 1. Olivia Newton-John - Xanadu (Almighty Definitive Mix) 2. In this episode of Adapt or Perish, we discuss the films La Cage aux Folles and The Birdcage! For this episode, we watched and discussed: La Cage aux Folles, the original 1973 play, written by Jean Poiret. The 1978 French/Italian movie La Cage aux Folles, directed by Édouard Molinaro, and starring Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault. Watch on Amazon or iTunes. The 1983 Broadway musical, written by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman. The Birdcage, the 1996 American remake, directed by Mike Nichols, written by Elaine May, and starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Weist, and Hank Azaria. Watch on Amazon or iTunes. Footnotes: Kowtow, verb: act in an excessively subservient manner; kneel and touch the ground with the forehead in worship or submission as part of Chinese custom. Yep, not cool. We discuss different special features (e.g. footage of the original play) available on the fantastic Criterion Collection edition of La Cage aux Folles. Harvey Fierstein and his distinctive voice. Kevin Smith telling the story of working with Jon Peters on Superman Lives (watch the entire clip, it’s worth it). George Hearn performs “Epiphany” from Sweeney Tood. Judge for yourself. “I Am What I Am,” from La Cage aux Folles, performed by George Hearn, Harvey Fierstein, and John Barrowman. (Bonus version performed by Dame Shirley Bassey.) Frank Rich’s original review of La Cage aux Folles on Broadway, published in the New York Times in 1983. Nichols and May perform “Mother and Son.” A photo of the duo. It’s been thirty-five years since La Cage aux Folles took Broadway by storm. What began in 1973 as a French stage farce followed by a series of films, the Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman musical was considered daring for its time with its portrayal of a happily domesticated male couple thrown for a loop by a request from their son. With marriage equality the law of the land and RuPaul’s Drag Race a crossover hit, it seems less daring today but its message of self-acceptance still packs a punch. Anthony Martinez plays Geirges, the proprietor of La Cage aux Folles, a French Riviera nightclub that features drag entertainment. The headliner is “Zaza”, otherwise known as Albin, Georges’s partner of twenty years as played by Michael Conte. Together they have raised their a son who’s come home to announce his engagement to a girl whose politician father happens to be the leader of the right-wing “Tradition, Family, and Morality” Party. He wants his fiancé’s father and mother to have dinner with his father and mother - that is, his biological mother. Albin is not to be included. It’s going to be quite some dinner party. Herman’s Tony Award-winning score runs from the romantic (his “Song on the Sand”) to the comedic (the funny “Masculinity”) to the joyous (the popular “The Best of Times”) and hits its apex with “I Am What I Am”, a defiant ode to individuality. Musical conductor Ginger Beavers and a six-piece band handle the jaunty Herman score well. There are two terrific lead performances in this Russell Kaltschmidt-directed production, both delivered by Michael Conte. As bombastic as he is as diva-deluxe Zaza, he’s even better as Albin. Conte brings real emotional depth to his character as he deals with his son’s rejection. It’s a depth that’s lacking from Martinez’s rather bland Georges. Nice comedic support is provided by Joseph Favalora as their butler/maid Jacob and Michael Fontaine as the stuffed-shirt politician. His twelve-syllable delivery of a five-syllable word had me laughing out loud. Lorenzo Alviso also does well as the turncoat son who soon sees the error of his ways. The design budget must have gone almost entirely to the costumes as there’s almost no set to speak of, but Zaza’s and Les Cagelles’ couture almost makes up for it. Social progress may have dimmed some of the ‘novelty’ from La Cage, but it still has plenty of heart. 'La Cage aux Folles' runs Friday through Sunday through May 20 at the 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30pm, there are Saturday and Sunday matiness at 2pm. There’s also a Thursday, May 3rd performance at 7:30pm. This week as we enter the book of Exodus. In hebrew we call this book Shemot the book of names. The Torah portion starts out with the names of the Israelites who came down to Egypt. Then later we learn the name of Moses and when Moses encounters God for the first time he says to God tell me your name. As I write this I can't help but remember the gay anthem of my youth the Gloria Gaynor song I Am What I Am https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj8C43r4zm0

I can't of no better way to wind this site down than with a new addition to the Pride Classics series.  It's been a long while since I originally posted the 5-set podcast, which I performed some minor updating to last year but it still needed more.  Bigger, better, faster ...HARDER! Things start off with Linda Eder's version of "I Am What I Am" from La Cage Aux Folles.  This song was/is a rallying cry for the gay community originally made famous by Gloria Gaynor in 1983.  Though I didn't use Gloria's version, a 2013 re-work of her other gay anthem "I Will Survive" does appear here and fits nicely with the late 90s early millennium vibe of this set. While the majority of these songs have appeared at one time or another in past sets, the one song I could never get worked in is the closing number.  The original Bruce Roberts, Elton John and Kristine W version of "When the Money's Gone" is one of my ALL-TIME favorites.  The only version of this song that exists is in a continuous mix; one for the Junior Vasquez "White Party Album" and the other from some obnoxious "Gay Anthems" mix album.  I was finally able to mix it in with the cold ending of "I'm Outta Love" and just added a blast sound effect for the cold-ending of the song that was about to mix into another song from which it was taken.  Not to go on and on about this but I'm tickled I finally got it to work. Some of you have sent me a note indicating you tried to make a donation from the site but for some reason it wouldn't allow you.  Usually, you have to turn off your pop-up blocker in your browser for it to work.  If you prefer, you can send your donation via PayPal to info@partyfavorz.com.  I need to raise $60 (I already got $10) by the 17th to keep the site up.  Otherwise, I'll just keep the name and drop everything else.  I'm freaking dirt poor at the moment and this is the only way to keep things moving.  If it doesn't happen, then it doesn't happen.  It's been a good ride and frankly I'm pleased with what I have achieved, so no regrets. I want to wish everyone a very happy Pride, this IS our year! Peace Out and as always ...ENJOY! -K Album : Unspeakable Joy | Pride Classics Artists : Various Genre : Circuit, House Length : 1:52:41 Linda Eder - I Am What I Am (Lenny B's Too Much Drama Club) Suzanne Palmer - Muscles (Club 69 Future Mix) Jennifer Lopez - Alive (Thunderpuss Club Mix) Lamya - Empires (Illicit Siren Mix) Kim English - Unspeakable Joy (Razor 'n' Guido Vocal Mix) Celine Dion - I Drove All Night (Hex Hector Extended) Lara Fabian - I Will Love Again (Thunderpuss Club Mix) Laura Pausini - I Surrender (Mike Rizzo Global Club Mixshow Edit) Destiny's Child - Independent Women Part I (Victor Calderone Club Mix) Kristine W - Feel What You Want (Junior's NY Xtended Vocal) Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's Ok (Thunderpuss 2000 Mixshow) Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive 2013 (Pink Ribbon Club Mix) Deborah Cox - Nobody's Supposed to be Here (Hex Hector's Club Mix) Debby Holiday - Dive (Chis Cox Club Anthem) Christina Aguilera - Beautiful (Peter Rauhofer Mixshow) Angie Stone - Wish I Didn't Miss You (Hex Hector & Mac Quayle Club Mix) Anastacia - I'm Outta Love (Hex Hector Main Club Mix) Bruce Roberts feat.
