Kevin Csolak shares his journey from growing up in his mom's New Jersey dance studio to starring as Tulsa in the Broadway revival of Gypsy. He opens up about performing alongside Audra McDonald and Danny Burstein, the artistic influence of the live orchestra, and how the cast is breathing new life into a classic. Kevin also reflects on what it means to approach each show with intention and curiosity—even months into the run. He takes us behind the scenes of his whirlwind audition for Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, including the surreal moment of dancing in front of the director himself. Plus, he recalls the unexpected overlap between his commercial dance career and Broadway—like performing at the Super Bowl with Justin Timberlake just hours before starting Mean Girls rehearsals. Throughout, Kevin shares insight into how rejection can fuel reinvention, and why staying creatively sharp is non-negotiable. Kevin Csolak is a Broadway, TV, and film actor known for playing Tulsa in Gypsy, Diesel in West Side Story, and Aaron in Mean Girls. His screen work includes roles on Jessica Jones, Boardwalk Empire, Animal Kingdom, and the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room. SECOND SIGHT is directed by Ives and features music by Dan Moses Schreier, musical direction and piano by Alan Johnson, and special guest vocals by Chloe Holgate, Hai-Ting Chinn, Gregory Purnhagen, and Barbara Rearick. The writing of this song led to one of the last fights that Joe and Jen ever had. Joe waited until the last minute to write this song for a concert Jen was producing, Jen needed the song a week in advance, Joe didn't deliver until hours before the show, and Jen was (rightfully) PTFO. But now it's one of her favorite songs! (If the song sucked, would Joe and Jen still be in a fight?!) Please listen to it while standing on 52nd St in NYC for a truly immersive experience. Sung by Danny Burstein, who embodies the connection between generations that this song describes. http://BPN.fm/Album to get the music. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As I'm writing these notes for the podcast, many Broadway shows are not able to come back right now because of the increasing Covid numbers. This podcast was recorded just a couple days ago before "Moulin Rouge!" had to shut down on Thursday and Friday, due to Covid found in the company… Here's to hoping they're back safely by the time you're reading this. The 10-time Tony winning "Moulin Rouge!" stars my guest today – Recent winner of the Tony this past year for his performance as Harold Zidler in "Moulin Rouge!", Danny Burstein. Danny is an amazing human being, in literally every sense of the word. And he just also happens to be one of the best actors you could ever dream of seeing on a Broadway stage. Or anywhere. Danny Burstein has starred in 18 Broadway plays, receiving Tony nominations for "The Drowsy Chaperone" (2006), "South Pacific" (2008), "Follies" (2012), "Golden Boy" (2013), "Cabaret" (2014), and "Fiddler on the Roof" (2016). Burstein has also won two Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, and received three Grammy Award nominations. Burstein's performance in "Moulin Rouge!" also earned him the 2020 Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance. His other Broadway credits include "The Seagull" (1992), "Saint Joan" (1993), and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" (2010). He has also acted in many prominent television shows and movies. I had the great privilege of meeting Danny when I was chosen as the actor to close the part of ‘Man In Chair,' following in the footsteps of the brilliant Bob Martin, amongst other gifted actors. Being on stage at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway, standing next to Danny - and the rest of the amazing cast - was a gift beyond gifts as an actor. I was intimidated by Danny because he was so damn good. And of course this was the part where he played a Latin lover narcissist, Adolfo, a part for which he was nominated for a Tony. it was one of the funniest characters I had ever seen. Danny has overcome so many things— and many of them recent. We discuss all of them in this wonderful conversation with one of my dearest friends. We speak of the loss of his wife to ALS, the amazing musical star, Rebecca Luker. We talk of how Danny had to walk himself to the hospital in March 2020 on the verge of death from Covid—and his journey before and since then both personal and professional. If you'd like to hear a very special open conversation between friends —who love each other —and also get to hear from one of the greatest and most highly respected actors on Broadway, this episode will truly resonate with you. TONY AWARDS ARE BACK!!! #1 Robyn Hurder was robbed. #2 Danny Burstein is perfect. #3 Leslie Odem Jr has a perfect singing voice. #4 we still can't get over that Wheels Of A Dream … Joe and Dan ARE Jesse Tyler Ferguson clutching his pearls and Kerry Butler sobbing while watching Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra. Broadway's back!!… is it back? Kind of? Yes!! Dan and Joe breakdown all the emotional, bizarre, and thrilling moments from this year's (last year's) ceremony. We talk about the controversies surrounding this years Tony Awards as well. There's a lot happening in our business right now and we try to shed light on some things you might be reading on Twitter. We just gotta say… if you felt anything besides joy while watching the awards this year, we're with you. It's a crazy time. It feels weird to celebrate. But at the end of the day, we're still little theater geeks watching Tony's in our living rooms crying while Idina and Kristen sing “For Good”. RIGHT?! Learn more about your ad choices. Hear him talk about what he learned from Harold Rome, how he decides a property should be musicalized, why you should never assume anyone knows who you are, why he made Frank Gilroy forget the ending of his own play, and why he ended up having two months to write a show to be performed in a barge on the Seine! A collection of four uniquely wonderful long stories, including a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestseller THE OUTSIDER. News people have a saying: 'If it bleeds, it leads'. And a bomb at Albert Macready Middle School is guaranteed to lead any bulletin. Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog - and on her own need to be more assertive - when she sees the footage on TV. But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realises there is something not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene. So begins 'If It Bleeds', a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestselling THE OUTSIDER featuring the incomparable Holly on her first solo case - and also the riveting title story in Stephen King's brilliant new collection. Dancing alongside are three more wonderful long stories from this 'formidably versatile author' (The Sunday Times) - 'Mr Harrigan's Phone', 'The Life of Chuck' and 'Rat'. All four display the richness of King's storytelling with grace, humour, horror and breathtaking suspense. A fascinating Author's Note gives us a wonderful insight into the origin of each story and the writer's unparalleled imagination.
Danny Burstein is a six-time Tony Award nominee who made his Broadway debut in 1992 and now has 18 Broadway credits including Company, Titanic, The Drowsy Chaperone, South Pacific, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Follies, Fiddler on the Roof, and most recently My Fair Lady opposite Laura Benanti. He can be seen all over the small and big screens, currently as D.A. Lewis Cormier on the CBS TV series Evil, and can even be heard lending his voice to video games such as Grand Theft Auto and more. He is now on stage as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge the musical. After deciding at a young age that performing was for him, he attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York, Queens College, and then University of California, San Diego to take an MFA in Acting. Throughout his highly acclaimed career, he almost said no to the offer of what then came The Drowsy Chaperone. While performing 8 times a week, he also makes the time (often at the expense of sleep) to also maintain an active TV, film, and voice over career. On a more serious note, we discuss Rebecca Luker's (his wife) recent diagnosis of ALS, more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He is candid and emotional about the toll it has taken on both of them in addition to the incredible drive and strength Rebecca has to stay well. Please visit http://prosetin2020.org/ to donate to further research and test an ALS drug candidate that Rebecca will be trying. About our Interview with: Alfie Parker Jr. Alfie, a Broadway Bares staple and one of ALADDIN’s newest additions, took time to sit down with us after making his debut in the show, but while also still being in rehearsal for his upcoming put-in for the Genie role. We get to learn about the incredible audition process he went through, and how all of the Disney team gave him the “freedom to fail.” Alfie is an incredibly hard working artist, who is no stranger to set backs and disappointments, but it is his faith in God, and his positive outlook that defines him. He believes God has given him the “gift of hope” that pushes him to keep moving forward. Alfie talks about how the setbacks of not getting accepted into any musical theatre programs, and the layoffs from different shows have actually opened other doors that have made him stronger. Listen in to find out what advice Danny Burstein gave him during his first Broadway show: SOUTH PACIFIC. And also listen in to hear Alfie school us co-hosts in the world of Step Teams. I recently described today's guest, the great Danny Burstein, as a glow worm. On stage, the man, truly, is lit from within. If you've ever seen him in anything, you know what I'm talking about. Whether the role is large or small, passionate or passive, when he's on stage, you can't take your eyes off of him, and you wouldn't want to--he's just magnetic that way. Danny began his career in New York in the early 90s taking a lot of small roles and understudy gigs. Then, a few years on, he made the terrifying decision that actors sometimes do--not to take any work that didn't challenge him artistically and advance him towards a more fulfilling career. Of course, we all know the rest. He went on to earn five Tony Award nominations for his work in such shows as 'The Drowsy Chaperone,' 'South Pacific,' 'Follies,' 'Golden Boy,' and 'Cabaret.' This season he's back on Broadway wowing audiences 8 times a week as Tevye in the stunning Bartlett Sher production of 'Fiddler on the Roof,' currently playing at the Broadway Theater. I know I say this a lot, but it really was an honor to get to sit with this man for forty minutes in his dressing room and talk about his amazing body of work. Enjoy!!!
On this month's special edition of Arts in the City, Pat Collins takes an in-depth look at the hit Broadway revival of @Fiddler on the Roof. Fiddler: Back on Broadway features interviews with Sheldon Harnick, Danny Burstein, Hal Prince, and more.
The beloved 1964 musical "Fiddler on the Roof," with its book by Joseph Stein and score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, is back on Broadway this season. Based on writer Sholem Aleichem's Yiddish tales of Tevye the milkman, this new production of "Fiddler" is the show's fifth return to the Great White Way. The role of Tevye was originated by Zero Mostel, played on stage and film by Chaim Topol, and on Broadway by Herschel Bernardi, Theodore Bikel, Leonard Nimoy and Harvey Fierstein, among others. In this production, five-time Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein has the role, and the director is Bartlett Sher, acclaimed for his Rodgers and Hammerstein revivals on Broadway. But do we really need yet another "Fiddler on the Roof?" New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood explains why we just might. "Fiddler on the Roof" runs through July 3 at the Broadway Theatre.
When Martin Scorsese wanted to audition Danny Burstein for the roll of Lolly Steinman in Boardwalk Empire, rumor has it Scorsese sent Danny a Vine. Well, Danny was joking, and his humor, accessibility and range as an actor is palpable. He's a quintessential character actor, which means most people don't recognize him as Burstein morphs into whatever the role requires. His remarkable range is evident in the breadth of productions he takes on, be it Broadway musicals, indie films, opera at the Met, and if Burstein plays his cards right, a Steven Seagal film. Burstein is such a mensch, as you'll glean from our interview, that it's a trip to see him play darker roles, like his upcoming one in Cabaret. f you enjoyed our interview, please do check out the next two live shows at Joe's Pub, April 10th and May 6th. www.employeeofthemonthshow.com
Our panel of actors -- Danny Burstein, Malcolm Gets, Bill Pullman and John Douglas Thompson -- share the particular moment when they realized they wanted to be actors; how the language of a play influences their portrayal of a character; what it's like to work in a show with just one or two other actors; how they recoup after going "off script"; what kind of pre-show rituals they go through; the most useful - and least useful - director's note they received; how it feels to step into a role made famous by another actor; and what kind of research they do to prepare for a role.
