This Hip Deep edition, based on field work in Ghana, tells the story of how highlife turned into Afro-funk. Guitarist/composer/bandleader Ebo Taylor, is our principle guide, taking us to his hometown Saltpond to explore the roots of his complex sound, and recounting his highlife years, and his deep study of American jazz in London in the early 60s—all part of a remarkable mix. We also hear from Ghanaian Afro-funk pioneer Gyedu Blay Ambolley and other observers and veterans of this history. Among the figures that interweave this story are James Brown, his most successful African successor Geraldo Pino, and, of course, the creator of Nigerian Afrobeat (a variety of Afro-funk), Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Music and conversation with two African jazz musicians Mackinlay Mutsembi (Kenya) and Ghanaian jazz and highlife musician Gyedu Blay Ambolley from 2022 highlight the global impact of jazz. International Jazz Day celebrated at the end of April charts the course for Heather's curated playlist. Guest reporters include Prince Benjamin and Bill Odidi.

I crammed twenty tracks into the first hour of this episode, swinging wildly around the BPMs as usual with some promos, some oldies and a bit of hip hop. In hour 2 I was pleased to welcome Burnout Sumner from Berlin for a beautifully eclectic guest mix… For the past ten years Norman (DJ alias Burnout Sumner, a nod to one of his all-time heroes) has been a vital part of Berlin's music scene, mainly as a blogger, music journalist, via a communication agency focussed on artists and also as a passionate attendee of clubs and gigs. Over the course of this time he got himself a huge collection of tunes and records and his alter ego Burnout Sumner is his attempt to share it with the world and celebrate the life-affirming communal power of the dancefloor. His mixes are always up for surprises and notoriously take genre-hopping detours where oldschool tracks can exist right next to brand new ones as well as underground goodies are officially allowed to hold hands with all-time classic hits. For Burnout Sumner, a good DJ set always calls for a few proper pop moments to resonate with the audience. As a curator he's open to all sorts of genres, as DJ he's mostly focussing on soulful house music and retro-driven 90s rave vibes, he also shares a deep love for other grooving genres from funk to hi-energy. El Highlife es una de las músicas más importantes de la historia de la Música Africana, y en especial de la música de los años 70 y 80 de Ghana y Nigeria. En esta sesión de DJ Tubabu recogemos un montón de temas actuales, la mayoría grabados en los últimos años, que muestran que el Highlife sigue vivo. Por una lado reunimos a algunos de los genios de los años 70 que han grabado en los últimos años (Ebo Taylor, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Pat Thomas, Orlando Julius, Alhaji K. Frimpong). Músicos que actualizan el estilo siendo fieles a la música de los años 70 (Santrofi, Oliver Nayoka, Sollo7 and the Senku Band, Kodjovi Kush). Músicos nigerianos que se acercan al highlife desde el afrobeat (Bantu, Muyiwa Kunnuji, Wura Samba), y bandas que lo hacen desde el afrofunk ( Yaaba Funk, Konkoma, Vaudou Game, Jembaa Groove). También. bandas y músicos que fusionan distintas músicas africanas de baile, entre las que está el highlife, con electrónica y músicas urbanas (Pat Kalla, ONIPA, Nubiyan Twist, Kweku of Ghana, Koichi Sakai, Super Yamba Band). This Hip Deep edition, based on field work in Ghana, tells the story of how highlife turned into Afro-funk. Guitarist/composer/bandleader Ebo Taylor, at 77, is our principle guide, taking us to his hometown Saltpond to explore the roots of his complex sound, and recounting his highlife years, and his deep study of American jazz in London in the early 60s—all part of a remarkable mix. We also hear from Ghanaian Afro-funk pioneer Gyedu Blay Ambolley and other observers and veterans of this history. Among the figures that interweave this story are James Brown, his most successful African successor Geraldo Pino, and, of course, the creator of Nigerian Afrobeat (a variety of Afro-funk), Fela Anikulapo Kuti. James Brown fue un músico muy querido en toda África en los años 70, cuando el funk y el soul llegaron al continente, y esta admiración se tradujo en una gran influencia en muchos de los músicos que en aquel momento se atrevían a incorporar estos sonidos a los ritmos más tradicionales africanos, y sobre todo, a los sonidos urbanos que se estaban creando en toda África, sonidos vibrantes que iban enfocados a la gente más joven y a la pista de baile. En el AfroClub de hoy hacemos un especial dedicado a recorrer la música africana de los años 70 en busca del “James Brown Africano”, y es que leyendo libros y artículos de música africana relacionados con el funk, muchas veces vemos como a algunos de los músicos africanos de esta época les colocaban esta etiqueta, lo que si se piensa bien es todo un honor para los elegidos. Nuestra selección no solo es una recopilación de temas enérgicos de afrofunk, sino que nos hemos enfocado en elegir aquellos temas donde la forma de cantar de estos músicos imitaba al padrino del funk y del soul, con esa manera tan característica de incitar al público al baile y al desenfreno.Nuestro recorrido tendrá parada en Benín (Roger Damawuzan, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, El Rego et ses Commandos), Camerún (Jo Tongo), Burkina Fasso (Amadou Balake), Nigeria (Bala Miller, Segun Bucknor), Costa de Marfil (Prince Dgibs), Kenia (Matata), Malí (Moussa Doumbia), Ghana (Apagya Show Band, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Marijata), una gran variedad de músicos y de países en los que el afrofunk fue un movimiento fundamental de la escena musical de estos años 70. Se acaba el 2017 y ha sido un año inmenso para la música africana, un montón de grabaciones que han llegado desde todas partes de África, y que nos demuestran el buen momento de creatividad por el que pasan los músicos africanos. Desde AfroClub, nos sumamos gustosos a esta moda de las listas, que a nosotros nos encanta, aunque queremos aclarar que la nuestra es solo una selección muy personal que incluye algunos de los discos de este año que más nos han gustado.Escuchamos a músicos muy conocidos y populares, que después de muchos años en lo más alto, siguen manteniendo su nivel creativo, como Oumou Sangaré, que en su último trabajo incorpora algunos elementos de electrónica a su música, pero sigue manteniendo la esencia de la música Wassoulou; Amadou & Mariam, con su sonido fresco y pegadizo basado en la música bambara; y también está Tony Allen, el maestro de la batería del afrobeat, que este año se ha salido de su registro habitual, firmando una obra maestra de jazz, un mundo musical en el que se siente especialmente cómodo.También ha sido un buen año para que viejos conocidos de los años 70 sigan grabando y demostrando que el talento se mantiene intacto a lo largo del tiempo. El maravilloso sonido de la Orchestra Baobab con su fusión única entre música africana y música latina, sigue vigente después de tantas décadas; y Gyedu Blay Ambolley, uno de los músicos de highlife de Ghana, que con más descaro se ha acercado al afrofunk.Y es curioso que este año ha sido el año en el que muchos músicos y bandas han grabado su segundo trabajo, un disco siempre difícil, en el que tienes que tratar de mantener o superar el nivel del debut, y si no sale bien, puedes defraudar las expectativas creadas y tardar un tiempo en levantar la cabeza. Pero nosotros hemos tenido mucha suerte porque todos han pasado la prueba sobradamente. Entre ellos, Moh Kouyaté que sigue con su pop malinké dando más protagonismo a su guitarra. Songhoy Blues que continúan explorando las músicas del desierto con una actitud más rockera, perceptible en el sonido de sus guitarras eléctricas. Mookomba que han vuelto a sus raíces explorando la música tradicional del pueblo shona, de donde proceden. También, Elida Almeida que se alza como una de las grandes voces de Cabo Verde y Jupiter con su cocktelera de músicas tribales congoleña junto a la rumba y ritmos occidentales como el funk y el rock, creando una de las propuestas más arriesgadas que nos viene del continente. Y también ha habido debuts interesantes, el de Kondi Band, fusionando el sonido tradicional de la mbira de Sierra Leona con electrónica, y ese proyecto maravilloso que ha sido el de Les Amazones d’Afrique que ha reunido a conocidas cantantes africanas en un proyecto con un importante mensaje político, reivindicando los derechos de las mujeres en África.Y en esta lista del 2017 se nos cuela el último disco del rapero ghanés Blitz The Ambassador, que en realidad es de finales del 2016, pero como tardamos un poco en escucharlo, ha entrado este año en nuestra selección, y lo hace porque es una de las obras más originales del rap africano de los últimos años, ya que incorpora a su propuesta el sonido de las guitarras y vientos del afrofunk de Ghana de los años 70. Esperemos que te guste esta selección. Por nuestra parte, ya estamos con las antenas puestas buscando la música africana del 2018 y pendientes de las cositas del 2017 que se nos han escapado.

En el AfroClub siempre nos gusta cuando alguna de las grandes leyendas de la música africana de los años 70 vuelve a un estudio de grabación y nos demuestra que a pesar del tiempo, sigue manteniendo intacta toda su capacidad interpretativa y su talento para la composición de nuevas canciones. Hoy dedicamos parte del programa a algunas de estas leyendas que han vuelto a relanzar su carrera en los últimos años. Empezamos con Ketan, el disco que acaba de editar Gyedu Blay Ambolley, un gran músico de Ghana de highlife, que siempre tuvo influencia del jazz, aunque es famoso por Booniay, uno de los mejores discos que se grabó en los años 70 de afrofunk. Su retorno con una banda de músicos de Ghana vuelve a darnos la oportunidad de escuchar un highlife moderno con sabor clásico. Otros dos grandes músicos que volvieron en los últimos años, grabando con el sello Strut, fueron Orlando Julius y Mulatu Astatqé, y ambos lo hicieron acompañados por los Heliocentrics, una banda de jazz experimental que adaptan fácilmente su sonido a los ritmos africanos, tanto al afrobeat y highlife de Orlando Julius, como al ethio-jazz de Mulatu Astatqé, esa genial fusión de jazz y música de Etiopía que se creó en los años 70.Otra de las novedades que escuchamos hoy, y que también procede del sello Strut, es la Kondi Band, pura experimentación entre el sonido tradicional de Sory Kondi, un virtuoso de la mbira, y la electrónica aportada por el otro miembro de la banda, el productor DJ Chief Boima. También repasamos parte de la carrera discográfica de Verckys, uno de los saxofonistas más influyentes de la rumba congoleña. Escuchamos primero un tema de los años 60, cuando formaba parte de la gran escuela de la rumba, la OK Jazz junto al cantante y guitarrista Franco; y también escuchamos otro tema de los años 70, cuando Verckys formó su propio proyecto musical, la Orchestra Veve, donde daba protagonismo a su magnífica sección de vientos.Para completar este programa nos vamos con la alegría que transmite la música de Tabanka Djaz de Guinea Bissau, y con el sonido tradicional de Malí de Kasse Mady Diabaté, uno de los mejores y más respetados griots de toda África.
