Atomic HabitsAtomic Habits Full chapter Introduction Why do so many of us fail to lose weight? Why can't we go to bed early and wake up early? Is it because of a lack of determination? Not at all. The thing is, we are doing it the wrong way. More specifically, it's because we haven't built an effective behavioral system. James Clear finds that it takes four steps to form a habit. Cue, craving, response, and reward are the pillars of every habit. This book summarizes the four laws that correspond to the four steps to help you quickly build good habits or, counterintuitively, break bad ones. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we'll unlock the book Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones. Imagine you're sitting in a plane, flying from Los Angeles to New York City. Due to a mysterious and undetectable turbulence, your aircraft's nose shifts more than 7 feet, 3.5 degrees to the south. After five hours of flying, before you know it, the plane is landing. However, it's not landing in New York City, but in Washington Dulles International Airport, which is 225 miles from your destination! A minimal change over time can make a significant difference, and the direction of an airplane is a straightforward example. In the same way, a slight change in your daily habits can steer your path to a completely different destination. That's the incredible power of habits. Everyone wants to control their lives and not be led by the nose by bad habits. We'll make New Year's plans, vow to lose weight or quit smoking, keep reading or running, but these resolutions will often come to naught. Is it because of a lack of determination? No, we are doing it the wrong way. More specifically, it's because we haven't built an effective behavioral system. James Clear finds that it takes four steps to form a habit. Cue, craving, response, and reward are the pillars of every habit. This book summarizes the four laws that correspond to the four steps to help you quickly build good habits or break bad ones. There isn't just one way to develop good habits, but this book presents an ideal path the author knows. It's suitable for everyone who is seeking a step-by-step approach. The author of this book is James Clear, a habit researcher and author of the New York Times bestseller. Over 500,000 people subscribe to his email newsletter, and his website receives millions of visitors each month. Clear is the founder of the famous The Habits Academy, which is the leading platform for individuals and organizations that are interested in developing better habits in life and work. More than 10,000 leaders, managers, teachers, and coaches have graduated from The Habits Academy. Next, we'll go through this bookey with you in three parts: Part one: The fundamentals of behavior change; Part two: The four laws of behavior change; Part three: Inversions of the four laws.

NUGGET CONTEXT James speaks about how he got injured as a player and had to focus on small wins that eventually put him on a path of recovery and regaining of fitness. He goes on to talk about how he got curious about habits from a consumer behavior stand-point in the context of the business he had started. He speaks about how those two came together and led to him becoming a bridge between academic research and practical application. GUEST James Clear is the Author of the book - Atomic Habits that has sold more than 1 Million Copies globally. He is the creator of The Habits Academy and runs the website jamesclear.com where he writes about habits and human potential. The central question he is trying to answer through his work is “How can we live better”. He has a weekly newsletter where he shares some of his ideas and this goes out to more than Half a Million subscribers who benefit from his thinking. To subscribe to his newsletter, you could just got to Jamesclear.com. In our conversation we spoke about several elements that he has covered in the book. We first spoke about his journey and how he came to studying and researching habits. We then spoke about how we should think about building habits in the right areas. James says that we need to work hard on the things that come easily to us! We explore that in the context of transitions and relate that to the notion of keeping the identity small. We then dive into the notion of the plateau of latent potential which we all are likely to encounter when we get into a new domain. We also discuss how we can ensure that we don’t become slaves of habits and try to cultivate habits with awareness (something that we can learn from the Japanese train conductors!). We then go on to speak about the role of the environment in building habits and wrap up by talking about the notion of the gateway habit. These ideas might help you convert your 2020 resolutions into habits that create the system for you to achieve your goals. Best wishes for the year ahead. Published in Jan 2020. He speaks about how we can increase the friction in the negative habits that we want to get rid of and decrease the resistance in the positive habits we are trying to create. NUGGET CONTEXT A lot of our habits are often sub-conscious. How do we ensure that we don’t become a slave of our habits but really perform our habits with awareness. In one of my earlier conversations, Devdutt Pattanaik contrasted the Indian emphasis on awareness with the western emphasis on habits. James speaks about the Japanese system of pointing and calling and uses that example to talk about how we can perform our habits with awareness. NUGGET CONTEXT James speaks about the shape of the compounding curve and speaks about how we should think about motivating ourselves to persist despite no visible progress in the lower parts of the curve where the outcomes are not apparent. He specifically talks about the notion of the plateau of latent potential where suddenly the cumulative efforts bear fruit in a dramatic fashion. He speaks about the kind of feedback loops we need to set for ourselves and the markers that will help us chip away at foothills of the compounding curve. Every man knows that building effective and productive habits and systems is a crucial part of teeing him up for success. But, knowing and doing are two different things. And, it seems to me that most men fail to bridge the gap between the two because they don’t know how to build those habits into their lives. That’s why I’m stoked to bring you into the conversation that James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, and I had about the subject. Today we discuss why you should focus more about systems and processes rather than goals, the power of changing your identity over changing your habits, an interesting take on discipline, will-power, and self-control you probably haven’t heard of, and focusing on the fundamental unit of progress and ultimate success. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Creating powerful results Working in harmony Eliminating failure A margin of safety The ultimate outcome Associating pain with progress Identity-based habits Your habits are the pathway Behaviors will lead the belief The 2-minute rule Mastering the art of “showing up” The four laws of behavior change Designing your own environment Preparing for battles Adjusting your systems JAMES CLEAR Gents, I’m stoked to introduce you to my guest today, Mr. James Clear. James has been covering the topic of habits, systems, goals, and processes for a very long time and, last year, he wrote a book titled Atomic Habits. Many of you have probably read it. At the time, we weren’t able to schedule a podcast but I’m honored that we were able to have him on now. He’s the creator of the Habits Academy, a weightlifter, photographer, and a New York Times Best Selling Author and he’s been focusing on biology, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy to help men become more successful on their own individual paths. I know you’re really going to enjoy this one and get a ton of value from it. IRON COUNCIL Gent’s, I just need to interrupt very quickly because I want to let you know that inside our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, we’re doing a deep-dive into the subject of this conversation – habits. The 500+ men are uncovering the habits that are working for and against them, creating the systems to ensure they stick with the good habits and eliminate the bad, and holding each other accountable to staying on the path. In fact, many of the practices that James and I have been discussing in this podcast are the very practices and strategies we’re employing inside the Iron Council. Why is it so hard to incorporate new, healthy habits into our lives? Why is it even more difficult to eliminate bad ones? The problem is, we are wired to make decisions based on immediate reward. Bad habits provide this instant gratification, while the reward of good habits is based in the future. Is there a way to shift the balance and give ourselves an immediate reward for doing the right thing? Or build in a cost to making a poor choice? James Clear is the author of New York Times bestseller Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones and the creator of The Habits Academy, an elite training platform for building better habits in your business and personal life. His work has been featured in Entrepreneur, TIME and on CBS This Morning, among many other national media outlets. James also happens to be a talented travel photographer and accomplished weightlifter. Today, James joins us to explain how results serve as a lagging indicator of the habits that preceded them. He walks us through the four stages of the Habit Loop, describing the crucial role craving plays in appreciating the individual response to a particular cue. “True behavior change is really identity change.”James ClearWhat stands in the way of becoming the person you aspire to be?Maybe it's circumstances. Access or opportunity. For many its bad habits, exacerbated by the unsuccessful war waged to replace them with good habits — a rinse and repeat process that generally leads to failure and discouragement. Why is it so hard to overcome negative patterns?Today's guest contends the problem isn’t you. The problem is your system.Evolving from stuck and unsatisfied into the person you wish to become is equal parts art and science. Science helps explain the root causes of our behaviors and how to modify them. But the application of said principles into practice is very much an art.Today we explore the often misunderstood terrain of behavior change with author James Clear, a man who has spent the better part of his career attempting to understand and master the art and science of human habit formation and decision-making,A regular speaker at Fortune 500 companies, James’ work is used by teams in the NFL, NBA, and MLB. He has been featured in the New York Times, Entrepreneur, Time, and on CBS This Morning. His website jamesclear.com receives millions of visitors each month. Hundreds of thousands subscribe to his popular e-mail newsletter. And over 10,000 leaders, managers, coaches, and teachers have built better habits in life and work via his Habits Academy online program.James recently penned Atomic Habits, a New York Times bestselling deep dive into evidence-based self-improvement. A comprehensive primer on what actually works when it comes to behavior change, it zeroes in on the transformative power of making small changes. Packed with implementable takeaways (including many strategies I have myself employed with great success), it's a must read for anyone looking to take their life to the next level. This is a highly practical conversation that explores the psychology and neuroscience behind behavior change.Specific topics include the problem with goals. We discuss the relationship between overly ambitious goals and failure — why most people make the mistake of optimizing for the finish line when we should instead focus on getting to the starting line.James explains why establishing systems are critical; and why focus should be placed on practice over performance. We also cover why it's important to move beyond temporal, emotional drivers like motivation into practical action. Why you're more likely to act yourself into feeling rather than feel yourself into action.Or, as I like to say, mood follows action. My biggest takeaway from this exchange is James’ compelling dissertation on why we are best served by concentrating on identity. In other words, long-term results are best derived not from achieving the goals we set for ourselves, but instead by slowly adopting and inhabiting the daily practices and characteristics of the person we aspire to become.Powerful and potentially game-changing, this conversation will reframe how you contemplate and act upon your ambitions. James Clear’s life was forever changed when he faced a devastating injury to his brain in his junior year of high school. After months of hard work and determination, he fought his way back to success in sports, school, and his life. He credits these astounding successes to his “atomic habits.” This concept is something that he wishes to share with the world. James wants to educate people about a new revolutionizing system for change that has the potential to alter the way we pursue goals. He explains that “Atomic Habits” are the small habits that we implement in our lives that compound to give us the results we are seeking. We often get discouraged because we expect change to be linear, when in actuality, we experience a “Plateau of Latent Potential”. By realizing that we can get 1% better everyday, and understanding that this improvement compounds, we are more motivated to put in the work that gets us to that breakthrough moment. By focusing on identity based habits and on who we want to become, we are much more likely to succeed in our level of achievement. James emphasizes the important of analyzing and being open to altering our beliefs in order to allow ourselves to grow. The real power in this process is that it can actually lead to us evolving our beliefs in ourselves. The habit feedback loop involves the cue, the craving, the response, and the reward. By understanding the steps of habit formation, we can better create and break good and bad habits, respectively. Read all about how you can start this transformative new system with James Clear’s book, “Atomic Habits.” What you’ll get out of tuning in: How to create persisting good habits How to break bad habits Why habits are essential to success Links Mentioned in the Episode: Qualify yourself for a spot in Awake Living Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones James's website Body Thrive Book Show Highlights: Habits can work for you or against you in life. By understanding how we can design them in our favor, habits can help us achieve our goals. It is important to be patient in developing good habits. The effects often remain unnoticeable until we break out of the “Plateau of Latent Potential.” By focusing on our systems in place, rather than on our goals, we can better initiate change in ourselves. The most effective way to achieve change is to focus on what we want to become. By learning the “Four Laws of Behavioral Change” we can effectively build better habits.
