This is a recording of the launch of our report Beyond Social Partnership? Devolved Levers to Support Trade Unions in Wales, which took place on Thursday 16 February 2023. This event was chaired by the IWA's Policy and External Affairs Manager Joe Rossiter and included a presentation and Q&A delivered by Harry Thompson, the IWA's Economic Policy Lead and author of the report. As part of our work towards a fair economy for Wales, we have undertaken a short study into the trade union movement in Wales, and its potential to structurally re-balance Wales' economy in favour of low and middle earners. We want to ensure that any growth in overall prosperity is distributed across society and across the economy, rather than being disproportionately absorbed by those at the top. We find that there is a high scope for empowered trade unions to help restructure Wales' economy in favour of those on low and middle incomes, additionally ensuring that any new attempts to grow and rebuild Wales' economy are systematically more evenly distributed. Empowered trade unions are likely to increase the share of national income that goes towards remunerating labour, and to ensure that the ‘wage share' has a flatter distribution. They can also increase the quality of working life for many people at the bottom of income distribution, and contribute towards economic growth by increasing demand. Despite some patches of best practice from the Welsh Government with regards to the trade union movement, there is still far more that can be done to support trade unions in creating a more equal economy. On today's episode I'm talking to Eliza Fricker about PDA or pathological demand avoidance – and in fact I know many people interpret PDA as persistent desire for autonomy. I've done a few episodes on PDA before but never from a parent's perspective so after reading Eliza's book, The Family Experience of PDA, I knew I wanted to share her perspective with the Tilt community. During this episode, we talked about how demand avoidance is more extreme in a child with a PDA profile vs. the inflexibility and rigidity we might see in other neurodivergent kids, what Eliza has learned about herself parenting a child with PDA, and what her resistance was to the changes needed to her parenting style. Eliza also gave out some great tips for teachers who have a PDA student in their classroom and for parents who are struggling with family, friends, or people close to them who aren't willing to understand what PDA is and what that means for their family.Eliza Fricker is the illustrator behind “Missing the Mark” a deeply personal and all too human exploration of a mother's journey navigating the education system and everyday life with a child who can't go to school. This event was dedicated to the launch of our latest report, Our Land: Communities and Land Use. The project is funded by the Friends Provident Charitable Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Our report tells a story of Wales severely lagging behind in giving communities a right to access land and other assets, with an arduous and demoralising process that seems almost designed to keep assets out of community control, at a time when we emerge from a period of austerity that has driven a sell-off of community land and assets. We share the viewpoint of farmers, who are not merely defined by their work but are also active citizens of rural Wales, underpinning not just the economy of these areas but also much of its cultural life, too. This launch event provided attendees with an opportunity to hear the findings of the report, as well as our recommendations for policy-makers in Wales. We believe they will empower communities to have a real say in what happens in their area, underpinning vibrant and successful local businesses and services that can become new lodestones of often-struggling communities. This was an hour-long seminar on Zoom, delivered by Harry Thompson, Economic Policy Lead at the IWA and author of the report, and Auriol Miller, Director of the IWA. Follow and support the IWA.

Dick (with particular empahsis on him as a neoplatonist). She spends much of her time reading and walking parks and meadows and by the sea (sometimes at the same time because audiobooks exist). She is fascinated by tarot, and by signs and symbols in general - metaphors are moreish! She is in a (very protozoan) band called Venn. Websites are a faff but she has a tumblr that performs the same function: https://carrie-the-scrivener.tumblr.com/ The daily practice I find most nourishing is nidra yoga. I have struggled with anxiety since I was little, and a couple years ago at a writing retreat I discovered nidra yoga and it's been really transformative. While knowing that there is a way to soothe my mind and sink into a perfectly peaceful featherbed of calm is a relief, it's also increasingly deepening the sense of peace there is in other sources (sitting in the garden meditating listening to classical music, for instance), and in ... tuning into to Source (is the best way I can think of putting it). So that's an unexpected bonus! There are lots of nidra yoga videos online, and I'd recommend Tanis Fishman's videos. I'm *always* reading 'The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick' (the 2011 edition predominantly). It's tantamount to being my bible. It got me much more deeply into philosophical questions than any book ever had before, and continues to be a book I have an ongoing dialogue with. Do I agree with everything Dick writes in there? No, and neither does he. But the core concepts are sound. This is basically neoplatonism in the 1970s, a (hefty) footnote to Plato, and as good a lamp as any to lead the way out of the cave. 'Cromwell and Communism: Socialism and Democracy in the Great English Revolution' by Eduard Bernsein (1930) is both really interesting in terms of how Britain could theoretically have become a very early uptaker of (neo)communism à la Gerrard Winstanley, and just historically fascinating because it includes sizeable quotes from the seventeenth century from people who were considering (when it come down to it) the same political questions that we're considering today. It's all surprisingly relatebale. 'The PDA Paradox: The Highs and Lows of My Life on a Little-Known Part of the Autism Spectrum' by Harry Thompson (2019) is about something that I ... I wouldn't say have so much as am. The whole autism discourse, however well-intentioned (and it isn't always), usually annoys the life out of me. It's a very important subject, particularly at a time when there is a lot of debate, even within "the autistic community", around whether autism is a disability/pathology, or whether pathologisation can itself be a form of disablement/discrimination. For one thing, the statistics are that in the UK 22% of ("diagnosed") autistic adults are employed. The vast majority of the rest have to subsist on a benefits (welfare) system that the UN has said violates human rights obligations. So clearly there's a lot to be addressed and written about in terms of autistic rights (and maybe I should write something). But this is just a memoir by someone who is quite a lot like me, talking about a way of being that is very like my own, and that's really refreshing. There are lots of books about autism, but not very many specifically about PDA. And last but by no means least The Red Boo

A memoir by an adult with PDA, reflecting back on his early childhood through to present day. Diagnosed with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) in his teenage years, Harry Thompson looks back with wit and humour at the ups and downs of family and romantic relationships, school, work and mental health, as well as his teenage struggle with drugs and alcohol. By embracing neurodiversity and emphasising that autistic people are not flawed human beings, Thompson demonstrates that some merely need to take the "scenic route" in order to flourish and reach their full potential. The memoir brings to life Harry's past experiences and feelings, from his torrid time at school to the peaceful and meaningful moments when he is alone with a book, writing or creating YouTube videos. Eloquent and insightful, The PDA Paradox will bring readers to shock, laughter and tears through its overwhelming honesty. It is a turbulent memoir, but it ends with hope and a positive outlook to the future.

The group pick up the conversation around socialising and NT expectations as opposed to 'the right way to socialise,' the value of silence and being comfortable with awkwardness. They then discuss value of the Autistic experience over Autism research and how this should shape all support and services for Autistic people, as well as the mistake people make in not asking Autistic people for their perspective first. We explore the double empathy problem and the myth of Autistic 'lack of empathy,' and look more at a difference in empathy. Sam even asks if someone such as himself, who gives training in Autism but isn't Autistic, should basically 'f**k off out the way and get a milk-round' and leave Autism training to Autistic people.... fortunately, the answer was pretty positive. More discussion on empathy leads on to more examples of the differences within the spectrum, how and why Chloe, Mollie and Harry approach eye contact, communicating in analogies and the challenge of looking and listening at the same time. Finally, Sam gets diagnosed as a green and yellow circle......and then a little bit on stimming [tools or toys....or blu-tac]. In this episode, host Sam Harris talks with Harry on the ever shifting roles an Autistic person with a PDA profile might give themselves, the automatic nature of a demand avoidance response and how backing off can sometimes be enough to allow the demand avoidance to reduce, priming virtues rather then demanding help-fullness for the sake of it. The need for a more in-depth understanding of some general ideas around PDA such as 'doesn't respond well to praise' and perhaps different terminology for certain approaches such as 'disguising demands.' Harry discusses Neuro-typicals that 'get-it' and those that don't. Freddie Mercury and splat pig make and appearance and it does get a little sweary at times so apologies for that.
