On today's episode of Running Through my mind, Hellah is here to talk about accepting where you're at and understanding that someone's 5k race can be someone else's run across America. The hardest thing you ever did doesn't need to compare to the hardest thing someone else has done. They're both hard in their own respects. Don't let anyone make your accomplishments feel unimportant just because they've achieved more or less. A true athlete understands that and shouldn't look down on anyone because we all start somewhere. Go get that run in! Hellah Sidibe is the first black man to run across America (fueled by plants!) and has been running every day since May 15th, 2017. That's officially over 2000 days in a row in every weather condition imaginable! This year, he also completed the iconic Leadville 100 Trail Race in Colorado. And, it all started with a commitment to run just 10 minutes a day. Like many, Hellah hated running but started moving his body to lift himself out of a dark period in his own life. It was his way of taking responsibility for his own happiness. Five years and thousands of miles later, running is now his primary outlet to raise money for charities, help others find inspiration in their daily lives, and demonstrate the endless power of a plant-based diet. On Instagram, he writes, “Using our energy on what we're afraid of is wasteful when it can be used on what we want to accomplish. We don't need everyone to believe in us in order to chase those dreams and goals. Enjoy the process and get after it y'all!” Episode Timestamps and Highlights 6:53 Origins of his name, Hellah, and his upbringing in Mali 10:57 How tragedy brought him to the US 17:28 His dream of becoming a professional soccer player 18:40 Did he always love running and what compelled him to even start a run streak? 29:45 When did he decide to run across the country? 33:15 Adventures of running across the country 36:00 How and why Hellah switched to a plantstrong diet 41:30 His favorite running conditions 43:29 Does he prefer running alone, or with people? 45:00 What about listening to music or podcasts? 48:24 Favorite athletes, or inspiration? 49:30 What in the world do his parents think about this non-traditional career? 53:40 Low points on his Run Across America 57:20 His experience at the Leadville 100 1:02:23 How did he fuel for a 27-hour race in the mountains of Colorado? 1:11:25 For Hellah, what constitutes a run distance to qualify as a “streak?” 1:14:55 What does he eat in a day? 1:17:30 How does he sleep? 1:18:00 How does he keep his feet healthy with all of this running? 1:22:26 What's next for Hellah? It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
We recorded this on Global Running Day, which is perfect because Hellah Sidibe is someone who gets the most joy out of the sport. He just recently celebrated his five-year run streak so we take a trip back to 2017 when and why it all began for the former MLS player. We also discuss his amazing 3061-mile run from Los Angeles to New York, which he accomplished in 84 days and made history as the first Black man to run across America. My co-host for this episode is my good friend, Zac Clark. He is a big fan of Hellah's charitable work and his attitude toward running so I invited him on to kick it on the pod. Hellah Sidibe is a former pro soccer player turned runner who strives to inspire and change lives through sharing his life experiences. Last year he became the first Black man to run across the United States, which he did in a quick 84 days, and he's been running every day since May 15, 2017. His HellahGood YouTube channel has nearly 275 thousand subscribers, of which I am one of, and his energy and enthusiasm for running, life, and tackling big challenges is incredibly infectious. In this conversation, I got to know Hellah a bit better and hear more about his story. He told me about coming to the U.S. from Mali as a kid and what it was like settling into his new country. Hellah told me about playing soccer throughout his life and how running, until just a few years ago, was something that he viewed as a form of punishment. He explained how making the commitment nearly five years ago to run 10 minutes a day for 2 weeks snowballed into something bigger than he could ever imagined, he told me about giving himself permission to quit if he's just not enjoying it anymore, and how he's used YouTube and social media to inspire others through his example and bring awareness to initiatives that are bigger than himself. We also talked about his relationship to pressure and how that's changed over the years, why it's important to be intentional with your running, and a lot more. I have a treat for you today. If you want to get super-motivated, keep listening. As soon as I got done recording this episode with Hellah Sidibe, I headed out the door for a run. Hellah's infectious enthusiasm and positivity might just do that to you, too, so you might want to listen to this just prior to – or during – your workout. Hellah grew up in Mali, a former French colony in West Africa. He moved to the United States to attend the University of Massachusetts, where he played soccer. He played professional soccer for a while before realizing his career wasn't taking off. Trying to find his direction, one day Hellah asked himself what was his biggest fear, and decided it was running. So he went out for a run. He has run every day since for almost five years. Even though he wasn't running long distances, he got the idea one day to run across the country. As it turns out, he became the first Black person to ever do this. But also as a Black man, this epic run wasn't without its share of incidents. Hellah does all that while eating plant-based, too. Hellah's fiancée Belle had begun recording his running streak and posting it on social media, and somewhere out of the blue, people identified with his journey, and he started blowing up in the cyberworld. Hellah now has a gazillion followers, and follow him on Instagram and YouTube if you also want a great daily dose of inspiration. Hellah has demonstrated how to get comfortable in uncomfortable situations and that no one is limited. His story is about taking risks, chasing your dreams, and re-imagining your potential.Hellah SidibeInstagram and Twitter @hellahgood9YouTube HellahGoodhttps://soles4souls.orgBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

LegendsI'm absolutely thrilled to bring you all today's episode with Hellah Sidibe! Hellah is one of the most positive, inspiring, and hard working people I have ever had the privilege to talk to. Hellah has been running every day, consecutively, for the last four years. In total, he has currently run over 1500 days straight! He grew up in Mali, Africa, in a place where some people don't even make a dollar a day. Recently, Hellah completed his first transcontinental run. He ran from LA to NYC in 84 days, totaling 3061 miles across the nation. In doing so, Hellah became the first Black person to ever complete a transcontinental in the US, and through partnering with Soles4Soles, was able to provide thousands of kids back in Mali with a new pair of shoes. Hellah is someone who genuinely makes this world a better place, his energy is unmatched and his commitment to living a healthy and happy life is truly motivating. This man is truly unique. In this episode we specifically discuss: The origin of Hellah's gratitude and happiness Hellah's story, growing up in Mali and becoming a semi-pro soccer player, to becoming a transcontinental ultra runner How Hellah mentally prepares to run every day no matter the conditions and how he pushed past the mental block he experienced before starting to run during the transcontinental We discuss how Hellah stopped making excuses and instead focuses on controlling the controllable Why Hellah went plant based and how he fuels his body and recovery with plants And how he became a creator and we discuss his love for the creative process This man is truly a legend in every sense of the word. Hellah Sidibe is the first black man to run across America. Covering 3,061 miles in 84 days, Hellah has spent many years cultivating a mindset of growth, perseverance and positivity that has kept him committed to reaching all of the goals and dreams he has for his life. Today, Hellah shares how fitness first became a part of his life and the methods and techniques he used throughout his transcontinental run to allow him to combat illness, injury and self doubt. Born in Mali, Africa, Hellah moved to the United States during his teenage years and describes what the initial transition was like for him and his family. Playing soccer throughout his school years and well into college, Hellah reveals to Nick how he initially disliked running as it was often used as a means of discipline during practices. The conversation then shifts to how Hellah deals with common mental blocks that often come up for athletes who embark on great physical feats. Hellah shares how he has worked to strengthen his mindset and how he uses his lowest moments as a source of motivation. Nick then dives into the day-to-day details of a transcontinental runner's life. Hellah reveals how running started out as a personal goal, with the desire to run every day for two weeks. Two weeks turned into one year, which then turned into two years averaging anywhere from 5-7 miles a day. Ready to do something bigger than himself, Hellah used the quarantine period of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic to train. With the desire to make it from Los Angeles to New York in 85 days or less, Hellah describes what those first few days were like starting out and how he learned to deal with injuries, the unique challenges of the terrain, and how to coordinate breaks throughout the day. He very quickly developed consistent routines around nutrition, sleep habits, and physical recovery techniques. Even after the completion of his run across America, Hellah still got up the very next day and went for a run. The episode concludes with Nick and Hellah sharing their everyday habits and morning routines that allow them to get centered for the day ahead. When it comes to running, they advocate that the key to success is to not give yourself the choice as to whether or not you will run that day. If you have something you're passionate about, find your reason for doing, and when you consistently show up, both Nick and Hellah believe that great things will undoubtedly happen. How do you stay committed to your goals when sh*t gets hard? There's an entire industry built on answering this question—and a litany of #lifehacks meant to assuage intolerance for hard work and discipline. But if you ask today's guest, he'll tell you the answer is found in consistently doing what you feel called to do—and doing it for something greater than yourself. It's about making friendships along the way. And seeing the process of pursuing your dreams as a privilege—not just a self-serving opportunity.Meet Hellah Sidibe.Born in Mali, Hellah emigrated from to the States from West Africa when he was a teen, becoming a professional soccer player and now, a U.S. citizen and the first Black person to ever run 3,000 miles across America. It's a truly extraordinary feat eclipsed only by his incredibly inspirational positive vibe and another noteworthy accomplishment: a 4+ year run streak.Hellah has run every single day, without missing one single day, for over 1500+ days in a row.I first came across Hellah's story when my friend Robbie Balenger joined Hellah for a segment of his transcontinental run through the Navajo Nation. Captivated by Robbie's Instagram Stories documenting the experience, I was immediately taken by Hellah's energy. I followed his journey through the conclusion of his run in New York City, and immediately got to work trying to book him here as soon as I could. And so, here we are.We talk running of course, but this conversation is about so much more. It's about reimagining your own personal potential. It's about chasing dreams, taking risks, putting yourself out there, and of course, what it takes to accomplish seemingly outlandish goals. We also discuss Hellah's decision to go plant-based. The impact this lifestyle has had on his running and, beyond that, his broader awareness. In addition, we talk about his work with Soles4Souls, a non-profit that provides repurposed shoes to empower the developing world. We discuss his relationship with social media, his growing YouTube presence, and the impact Casey Neistat has had on how he shares his personal perspective online. But mostly, this is about mindset. It's about living with intention—and the beauty of sharing the journey to self-actualization unfiltered, in real-time.To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. We've been extremely lucky to work with Hellah on our first season of the podcast. Each week Hellah would lay out the program for aspiring run streakers that listen to our podcast all while maintaining his own streak and social media content. He is a busy guy, but he still said yes to us. We are grateful. This first season we focused on Achilles International. We heard many great stories from athletes and guides who all LOVE running. Now we focus on Hellah and how he started his journey in running and what really motivates him to run. Spoiler alert! He is a selfless, kind, and unique person that we can all learn from whether it is in running, or just in his outlook on life. Thank you Hellah Sidibe for being uniquely you. Thank you for gracing us with your presence as a trainer and guest on our first season of I Run BeCause. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/irunbecause/support

Over the years she has been involved in a few other groups and organizations like Jersey Women Strong, Girls on the Run, and of course, Achilles International. "It makes me so happy. It brings me such joy and I, you know, really the running is just the means of being connected to so many different people, which is really, when you think that the question for this podcast is, why do I run? I run because I love being connected to so many other people."
