Zach Pogrob and I ran our first marathon on December 2, 2023 (St. Jude's Memphis Marathon). This was a real conversation we'd have if the mics were off. We spoke about the entire week we spent together, the run club, pre-race, during-race, and post-race. We also were lucky to be randomly joined by Hunter Weiss (https://www.instagram.com/hunter_weiss), for about 1 hour of this podcast, who filled us in on marathon training tips, his preparation for his next race, and what it was like to track our performances in Memphis. Read more about planning your next marathon breakthrough Thank you Lagoon! Our newest sponsor is Lagoon, maker of the most comfortable pillow I've ever used. And that's no hyperbole. I'm pleasantly surprised every night I lie down because this pillow is just perfect for me. Since I know that sleep is the #1 recovery tool at my disposal, I'm taking it a lot more seriously. I took their sleep quiz to find the right pillow for my body size and sleeping position at. It only takes 2 minutes and you'll find the type of pillow that will work best for you. I'm using the Fox and absolutely loving it. A big reason why is because it's adjustable. Since you can add or remove fill to get your alignment right, it's a great way to optimize the most important way you can become a better runner that isn't training: sleep. We all know how important sleep is. It's the best recovery tool that you have at your disposal - better than compression, ice, heat, massage, or anything else you can think of. Sleep is when the magic happens and your sleep quality matters. Take your rest and recovery to the next level with Lagoon and get 15% off your purchase with code strengthrunning here. Thank you DrinkLMNT! A big thanks to DrinkLMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at DrinkLMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. DrinkLMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. My favorite flavor is watermelon salt, but citrus salt is also a banger. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out DrinkLMNT to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.
This week, we heard about George's experience at the Austin Marathon, which came five weeks after the Houston Marathon and three weeks after the Mountain Mist 50K! We discussed the hills--including one particular hill--the vibe of the race, and perhaps most importantly, how he felt doing his third big race in just over a month. Before we got to it, we also discussed the Atlanta Marathon and Half-Marathon, we talked a little about Erik and Michelle's upcoming 10x5K, and we discussed whether we'd be watching "All Quiet on the Western Front," which features a screenplay by World Champion Triathlete Lesley Paterson.
In this episode, Run Breiter discusses the experience of running two full marathons in just three weeks apart, specifically the Miami and Austin marathons. He first shares the recap of these races, and than jumps into his personal experience and provides insights and tips for runners who may be considering taking on a similar challenge. Regardless if your a marathon runner, or run shorter distances, the same lessons can be applied. The episode also covers the potential benefits and drawbacks of running two races in close succession and how to properly recover between races. Run Breiter is confident running races is the best way for beginners to learn as runners, and to keep inconsistent runners consistent, but of course he wants all runners to be running for life so this episode should help give some great prospective.
In this episode, Run Breiter does a solo episode, where he gives a lot of updates to the Podcast Listeners. He goes through the NYC Marathon recap, and discusses his thoughts on this being a fit for others runners journeys. He also discusses, his upcoming races and whether or not a sub 3 hour marathon will be attempted in those races. Additionally, Run Breiter discusses some recent investments in the brand, which he believes will help build stronger quality content to help build a larger running community through Run Breiter. Last off, he discusses some updates on the free running plans, and how coaching these runners has gone.Enjoy this awesome episode, and "Don't Forget to Run Breiter".

Hellah Sidibe is the first black man to run across America (fueled by plants!) and has been running every day since May 15th, 2017. That's officially over 2000 days in a row in every weather condition imaginable! This year, he also completed the iconic Leadville 100 Trail Race in Colorado. And, it all started with a commitment to run just 10 minutes a day. Like many, Hellah hated running but started moving his body to lift himself out of a dark period in his own life. It was his way of taking responsibility for his own happiness. Five years and thousands of miles later, running is now his primary outlet to raise money for charities, help others find inspiration in their daily lives, and demonstrate the endless power of a plant-based diet. On Instagram, he writes, “Using our energy on what we're afraid of is wasteful when it can be used on what we want to accomplish. We don't need everyone to believe in us in order to chase those dreams and goals. Enjoy the process and get after it y'all!” Episode Timestamps and Highlights 6:53 Origins of his name, Hellah, and his upbringing in Mali 10:57 How tragedy brought him to the US 17:28 His dream of becoming a professional soccer player 18:40 Did he always love running and what compelled him to even start a run streak? 29:45 When did he decide to run across the country? 33:15 Adventures of running across the country 36:00 How and why Hellah switched to a plantstrong diet 41:30 His favorite running conditions 43:29 Does he prefer running alone, or with people? 45:00 What about listening to music or podcasts? 48:24 Favorite athletes, or inspiration? 49:30 What in the world do his parents think about this non-traditional career? 53:40 Low points on his Run Across America 57:20 His experience at the Leadville 100 1:02:23 How did he fuel for a 27-hour race in the mountains of Colorado? 1:11:25 For Hellah, what constitutes a run distance to qualify as a “streak?” 1:14:55 What does he eat in a day? 1:17:30 How does he sleep? 1:18:00 How does he keep his feet healthy with all of this running? 1:22:26 What's next for Hellah? A few weeks ago, we hosted a Facebook live event with Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn to discuss the importance of green leafy vegetables in preventing and reversing heart disease. During the broadcast, Essy shared the science behind chewing vs. drinking your leafy greens and he also spent time answering viewer questions. It was packed with so much information and action, that we've decided to share the playback in podcast format. Ann even got in on the action because she was so darn jazzed about it! And you know her, when she's excited, she just can't sit still! Essy answers: What do we need to know about endothelial function? What is nitric oxide and what functions does it perform? What is so magical about green leafy vegetables? Why we should chew our greens, as opposed to drinking them? What is the science behind this recommendation? Why do greens have to be steamed? Is raw ok? Can I use apple cider vinegar on my greens, or is it only balsamic vinegar? What does caffeine do to your artery cells? If I chew my green leafy ands still have a smoothie, is that ok? Should I limit spinach, or should I mix up my greens? How long should I chew my greens? Is there an optimum amount of time? What effect does wine have on the endothelium? What is the best way to store greens? Ann and Essy's thoughts on microgreens or baby greens? Can we eat the stems from our greens? Is insulin resistance the core cause of cardiovascular disease? Is hyperthyroidism improved with a whole food plant-based diet? If I have a problem with tooth decay, is it ok to use toothpaste with fluoride? What are some of Ann's favorite ways to get greens into her meals? Does Menirges Disease have any correlation with heart disease? Where does exercise come into play? How important is it to our health? I'm wfpb and my cholesterol is still high. Anything I can do? What can I do to raise my heart ejection fraction rate? It's been a while since I've broken down the course for the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon, and I haven't done so since the course changed in 2018. Well, the race is coming up on February 20th so I give you the audio from an Instagram Live session I did on the @roguerunning page doing just that. My themes for this year are courage and precision, and for those racing, I encourage you to bring those characteristics to bear on race day. Then, I break the half marathon course down into 4 sections and the marathon course down into 6 sections, talking about approach and pacing recommendations for each. If you are racing Austin, best of luck to you. And if you aren't racing Austin, then I believe there are still lessons in this episode for any rolling course. It's very fashionable these days to hear people speak of “influencers” - people who work with brands to promote their products and services to a niche audience in which they have a strong following. Well, our industry has had that for a while. They're called race ambassadors and they can be your race's special influencers, going out into the community and spreading the word for your event in their running club, weekly group run, or the next race or expo they attend.Today I have the pleasure of talking with William Dyson, Communications Manager for High Five Events. William manages the race ambassador programs for such prestigious events as the Austin Marathon, 3M Half Marathon, CapTex Tri and Kerrville Triathlon, and he'll be sharing his thoughts with us on how you can launch, grow and manage your own race ambassador program, including tips on using incentives, keeping track of your ambassadors' performance and ways to come up with unique ideas to make the most of your ambassadors' community reach. In this episode:What a race ambassador program is about and how it worksThe benefits of running a race ambassador program: expand your brand reach in your target communityInventivizing race ambassadors: comp codes, event gear, networking opportunities, and other perksBuilding a race ambassador program that effectively represents the local running communityDeciding how many ambassadors you should have, based on your budget and human resourcesSharing content/ social media posting schedules with your ambassadorsRecruiting non-local race ambassadors to expand your race reach in neighboring marketsBringing your team together: social meet-ups, happy hoursOver-communicating!What makes for a good race ambassador and how to pick a good mix of race ambassadors for your programMaking the most of celebrity race ambassadorsPros and cons of basing ambassador perks and comp codes on performanceOffering prizes for your best-performing ambassadorsMixing up returning and new ambassadorsAdvertizing your race ambassador program in the communityRace ambassador program ROI: what return/results you should expect from your race ambassador programThanks to GiveSignup|RunSignup for supporting quality content for race directors by sponsoring this episode. Robbie Balengar is a dedicated athlete in the running community and has ran several ultra marathons including Bandera 100k, Caballo Blanco 50, and Austin Marathon to prepare for his run across the United States of America. He ran 3175 miles from Huntington Beach California to Tavern On The Green in New York City in 75 days. Robbie did this all on a Whole Foods plant based diet with the help from his crew and the ice cream company Nadamoo who sponsored him for this event. He believes becoming vegan will make a huge impact , not just in the running community but around the world. As a 100% whole food plant based athlete , Robbie has been able to reduce inflammation in his muscles , and joints much more efficiently then an athlete who is not vegan. He would burn up to 10,000 calories in a single run everyday. Robbies meal plan consisted of 11 meals throughout the day with shakes that provided him enough calories.
Stacey Conley and her her husband owned and operated the Austin Marathon for many years. Stacey is a founding member of AIMS Women's commission whose charter is to increase women's running participation worldwide.

After last week's bye, the guys return this week with an all-banter episode! Tony lets us all know he has leaned that races' customer service teams must be absolute saints, after dealing with virtual event customer service himself over the past few weeks. And Eli shares the story of how an Austin Marathon customer service interaction is actually how he and his wife first met...although they didn't realize it until well into their courtship.Eli also shamelessly plugs the reason the pod took its bye last week, which is that he was busy last week putting on a different kind of virtual event: a virtual summer camp! Eli volunteers every summer as a Program Director for Experience Camps, a free week-long overnight camp for children who have experienced a death-loss, so he spent every evening last week on a camp activity Zoom call. Like races, virtual is an okay bridge, but he thinks in-person camp is way better. (Volunteer applications for 2021 will open this fall, and since this is a shameless plug Eli wants you to know that events people would absolutely love camp.)The guys talk about some recently-canceled or altered events, including the Richmond Runfest, directed by former ECT pod guest Tom Bedford, which had to postpone its marathon and half marathon but is still planning to put on its 10k, and also Spartan Race, which after its headline-grabbing Jacksonville event in June has since canceled its entire US season (although many of its international events are moving forward). (Warning: Frustrated with American's response to the pandemic, Eli drops a single F-bomb in this segment.)But the guys are heartened that some organizations are beginning to pilot new models and environmental safety procedures at small-scale in-person events, like the Atlanta Track Club with its Publix Summer Series. Tony notes the lack of a unified set of industry standards may make it very hard to take the next steps toward larger events, but the guys agree that those standards are needed even though, as Eli is fond of saying, every race is a snowflake. And they're also happy to see events continue to innovate, with ideas like OYO Portland (which they agree they need to have one of the event organizers on to discuss, since they don't know enough about it) emerging as new alternatives for major urban marathons.Eli and Tony wrap up talking about how excited they are for the elite-only London Marathon, how London's TV deal likely makes it more lucrative for them to put on an elite-only event than fully cancel, and also how they would be interested in doing a logistics and operations focused "B" broadcast for this unique edition of London (or really any race--if your event needs broadcasters who will talk way too much about what type of ballast they see in the background, hit us up!).If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, and don't forget to subscribe. Going from a 3 year starter at a Division I Football player as a defensive tackle, to completing a marathon can be one hell of a transformation for some; but just another day at the office for Mr. Ryan Boutwell. Coach Boutwell is now a practicing High School Strength & Conditioning Coach that spends his free time experimenting with training protocols and testing his body's extreme limits. He has transformed his body and his most recent feat has been completing the Austin Marathon. We dive into his journey through that process, the trials & tribulations, as well as how one can apply long distance running to their life. We also dive into how he develops himself mentally and spiritually, through literature and other experiences. Coach boutwell truly displays how various experiences (good and bad) can shape your perspective, and habits each and every day.
In this episode recorded earlier this spring Tony and Eli interview one of the behind-the-scenes giants of the industry, David Grice, owner and founder of RaceWorks Incorporated. David is a good friend who worked with and showed both Eli and Tony the ropes in their early days in the industry and, despite his substantially better running pedigree, is also a member of the "I've only run one marathon" club.David's career has taken him from his days as a college runner at the University of Texas, to becoming an intern at the Austin Marathon (which Eli also did... quite the launching pad, clearly!), to working in race operations at the local running store for a year before leaving on vacation and finding out that the store was no longer in the business of putting on races when he got back. That led to him launching his event logistics and operations business, and having to convince local events that were used to receiving those services for free to start paying him to provide them. From those humble beginnings he has become the "secret weapon" behind the scenes working ops on some of the biggest races in America, including the Chicago Marathon, Houston Marathon, Philadelphia Marathon, 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials and many more.David gets grilled about being a "portalet prima donna" and his personal hi-viz tailor, and despite us making fun of him for that he graciously regales us with great stories about putting on a 10k for Willy Nelson, having a man threaten to shoot him while certifying a half marathon on a rural county road (here's a link to the voicemail Tony refers to during this story), and climbing inside the finish truss to pull up a clock that was beginning to fall while the race was going on.We ask David to share his thoughts and insights on everyone in the industry's topic--COVID-19--but rather then get bogged down in that we "pivot" (but in a different way) to talking about what he's doing with his free time since he's not working right now, which includes a detour of a discussion into the Austin brewing and bar scene (Draughthouse for life!) and also Eli trying to get away with saying the phrase "mods on your whip" (don't worry, they let him know he can't pull it off).We agree that we need to have David back on some time to discuss his work on international races like the Singapore Marathon. And lastly, Eli asks (and Tony begs) for our listeners to come up with a better nickname (that sounds less like a certain male bodily function) than what Eli has taken to calling them, "Early Risers." We're looking for something #betterthanearlyrisers (and yes, this is Eli trying to get another hashtag to take off).If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, and don't forget to subscribe. Welcome, and Thank you for listening!. This episode is a recap of the Austin Marathon. One of my facinations about running long distance is it's correlation to life. You prepare and plan, but you really do not know what is coming until you actually begin to experience it. We can control control for some variables, but often the context changes making that preparation less than adequate. Life, like a marathon can throw you some curve balls. But, we have a choice as to how we respond, and we get to use that information in the future. Spoiler alert, I finished the marathon in 4 hours and 34 minutes, smiling. Taking a look at your current health status and invoking a change requires daily practice and mindfulness. It is quite easy to fall back into familiar ways. Sometimes we have to be patient and allow our bodies to adjust. Other times, we need to get our head out of the way and just push through. That sounds a lot like training and racing a marathon. It is all pretty simple on paper, but the implementation can be quite tricky. When you run a marathon with thousands of people running and cheering on the sidelines, you are pulled by the energy of the crowd. You want to push hard to compete with those running and push hard not to disappoint the spectators cheering with all their hearts. It makes running 26.2 a lot easier than running by yourself. The same can be said for changing your health status and nutrition. It is a lot easier when you have support and guidance. I would like to invite you to a marathon of health education. If you want a week long training session with us, sign up for our immersion vacation beginning March 23, 2020. Each day will be filled with exercise, nutrition education, cooking education and health evaluation and planning. The goal is to give you the tools to continue your health training program when you get home. The event culminates in our Fifth Annual Charlotte County Plant Based Nutrition Conference, March 28, 2020. It is an all day event of speakers, education and networking. You will leave motivated, energetic, and full of ideas on how to continue to improve your health. Go to doctordulaney.com and click the link to sign up. This episode starts with a recap of a brutally tough day at the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. Then, Steve and Chris continue their series on mental training, delving further into the first component of their mental framework - the battle plan. With this installment, they help you think about what motivates you to run and then walk you through the steps to create a statement of purpose for your running. If you can't answer the fundamental question - "why do you run?" - then it will be difficult to set big goals and achieve them down the road.
In this episode, Steve and Chris start by breaking down the Austin Marathon elite fields. We tell you who the favorites are and make our picks for both the men's and women's races. Serena Marie, RD: Carbs Serena Marie, RD answers a Periscope viewer question, “When is the ideal time to eat carbs?” Keep in mind that every body is different. Carbs get a bad rap at times, so remember that Serena defers that we get carbs from non-starchy foods. Carbs create a spike in insulin that acts as the “annoying neighbor” to get your cells to open up and let sugar in. Carbs are best utilized before your workout. Post-workout (40+ minutes of cardio), you can eat carbs to replenish sugar for your muscles. For people who have trouble sleeping, having a serving of carbs an hour before bed might be helpful (like milk or fruit). Sometimes diabetics find that their blood sugar is elevated in the morning, so they might benefit from a lower-carb breakfast.
