I have been in California - Riverside, LA and Palm Springs - for the last month, helping out with a family issue over there. I wanted to share a couple of thoughts I had about the golden state, where, as wealth and poverty collide, there are two very different realities. My first wake up call was in the supermarket - Stater Bros. Just how expensive has the US has become, especially for a European with weak currency. I used to think America was cheap. You think food prices in the UK are bad. I'd say they are twice as expensive in California, if not more. $4.99 for four large onions and they weren't even organic onions. Fruit, veg, fish, meat. Name your staple. The US ain't cheap any more. Obviously, exchange rates are a factor and the pound, at $1.27, is not exactly strong, if one thinks back to the heady days north o f two bucks. But currency aside, ordinary living is getting very expensive for our transatlantic cousins. (Houses are no longer cheap either, for what it's worth).Fuel, on the other hand, is around $4.80/gallon, which works out around £1/litre, compared to £1.45-50/litre over here. Americans are still complaining about it though. For them that's expensive. Guess it is when you factor in how big their cars are.(Gosh, I enjoyed living under US weights and measures, or as they call them English weights and measures. They are so much more intuitive than metric. More on that here, if you want to see my lecture on the subject). Second hand cars also seemed cheap, by the way, though my finger is not really on the pulse. I was just strolling round the classic car shops in Palm Springs, where you can pick up a Rolls Royce Corniche in attractive beige (I didn't realise there was such a thing) for $50k. That felt to me like less than you would pay here. Also, in Palm Springs people will tell you how nice your car is. Here they'll just nick it.The roads, by the way, are very crowded indeed, and boy are freeways manic. Palm Springs was like a dreamland. Sheltered from the cruel realities that are inflicting the rest of the world, the news feels a long way away. But there was a very different story in LA, 90 minutes up the road. My kids wanted to see Skid Row (where many drug addicts and homeless have taken root), so we drove around there for a bit. Even in a car with the locks on, I did not feel comfortable at all halted at traffic lights. I once had a run-in with a group of homeless people on a freezing winter's day in Hillbrow, Johannesburg - an experience I will never forget, and a story for another day. This reminded me of that. (Later, a Lyft driver told us Skid Row is by no means as bad as it gets. Places like Watts and Compton are too dangerous to even drive through). Skid Row borders on Downtown LA and, at the turn of a corner, you suddenly see all kempt streets and offices. The juxtaposition is stark. From there we went to the Walk of Fame for a stroll, where, within a few minutes of getting out of the car, we were almost knocked over by a huge (and I mean heavy weight world champion, 6 foot 8 basketball player huge) homeless black man with a very loud voice, running down the street, screaming platitudes at a much smaller, richly dressed and armed black man, who was chasing him, yelling at him to never be seen round here again. This was all in the first hour. My younger daughter (aged 19) turned to me and said she had never felt so unsafe in any city ever. She had a point. The drug addicted homeless seemed to be everywhere. Surely the sheer weight of numbers means something. In Venice, we watched a Latino man with a t-shirt stolen from TJ Max spend 10 minutes attempting to scan the bar code from the label of the stolen shirt onto the button at a pedestrian crossing, while the machine repeatedly told him to “wait”. Finally, exasperated, he threw his hands in the air and walked straight into the road to be hit by a passing car (fortunately not injured). The following day we visited Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. It is so wealthy, clean and curated, it is verging on the make believe. There, you are abnormal if you haven't had cosmetic surgery of some kind. Was ever there such a fairy land of a place. I don't think I've ever seen such extreme poverty and wealth so immediately juxtaposed as in LA. Something ain't right, as the saying goes, and, I dare say, something's going to give. It was probably my imagination, projecting fears and biases, but at times it felt like we were just a couple of short steps away from breakdown: a city on the brink. My general theory, or rather Alex McCarron's theory which I've adopted, of the South Africanisation of everything applies here too.The following day we hung out in West Hollywood and Silvertown, where, I should say, things felt more normal, whatever that means. I really liked the vibe. Best of all, I liked the canals around Venice. They are just glorious. Almost as nice as the River Thames upstream. As for LA's future, well… The city was built on the movie industry. Who watches movies any more? I have been to the cinema once since Covid. I used to go all the time. My kids don't go either. Most of their viewing time is on their phones, and of that the moving picture allocation goes on YouTube and Tictoc. (I know, I know). Films are for boomers, but even my mum hardly watches any now. Perhaps, then, LA goes the way of another city that lost its main industry: Detroit. It's not impossible, I suppose. On the other hand, there is so much capital in LA, it seems unlikely. South Africanisation, as I say, is the most likely. In any case, LA is a city that is not working for a lot of people, even if it is for a few.I would not be in a rush to invest capital there - unless it's in some kind of security company. On a happier note, here for your entertainment is a photo of the kids and me on a hike in the mountains around Palm Springs. I don't normally post pics of the fam, but I liked this one. Stella Horgan, beloved UK Hoffman Process teacher and so much more, shares with us this wide-arching, panoramic view of her singular life. Stella calls upon us to heal and find our full glorious potential as human beings, reminding us we are valid and that we are in the driver's seat of our lives. Content warning: This episode contains explicit material and may not be suitable for all listeners. Stella takes us across time, lands, cultures, and the many lives she has lived all in this one lifetime. She begins in South Africa, her beloved homeland in the painful years of apartheid and the way those years shaped her. Stella travels to Australia and shares with us a bit about her ten years living there. While there, Stella found the Hoffman Process. She came to the Process in the early '00s with a desire to heal. Stella shares with us the powerful, transformational apex of her Process when she experienced knowing she is loved and valid exactly as she is. She left the Process knowing she wanted to become a Hoffman teacher, which she did there in Australia, beginning her journey to be a part of the healing of this world. We then journey with Stella back to her beloved South Africa and the majestic white lions, women's healing and empowerment, and permaculture education. Since becoming a teacher, Stella has taught the Process in Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US. Stella shares stories about the era of apartheid in South Africa and how it affected her and her future life trajectory. She has dedicated her life, personally and professionally, to healing trauma and shame. You will be deeply moved by Stella's stories and words of hard-won wisdom about the inherent worth and validity of every human being. More about Stella Horgan: Stella Horgan is an artist, Director of South African impact NPO Zingela Ulwazi Trust (ZUT), a Senior Supervising Facilitator of the Hoffman Process (UK), a board member of the Australian wildlife advocacy group For the Love of Wildlife, and a coach, facilitator of groups, and workshops. She lives between the UK and South Africa. In 2022, Stella and the ZUT team created the first Centre for Women's Independence in Acornhoek, Mpumalanga, South Africa, offering learning experiences to rural women in Food Security (permaculture/regenerative practice), Livelihood Security (small enterprise development), Personal Security (self-defense skills to respond to and prevent harassment and assault), all woven through with Stress Reduction techniques. They formed a thrilling partnership in 2022 with American Zach Bush and his Farmer's Footprint addressing food security, nutritional diversity, and regenerative practice, through permaculture and planting a food and medicine forest of 2000 trees in a denuded local village. Stella has worked with dozens of Civil Society organizations in urban and rural contexts addressing environmental and human rights issues. She is fuelled by her love of nature and guided and enriched by her work with the Hoffman Process. Her main mission is to find ways to rebalance human life with nature to create regenerative, happy ways of living where all may thrive. The latest Household Affordability Index shows that the average cost of the Household Food Basket increased once more. Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group ‘s latest Household Affordability Index states that families are now paying an average of almost R200 extra per basket since it first began tracking the data five months ago. “The average cost of the Household Food Basket in January 2021 is now at its highest level since the start of the expanded collection in September 2020,” says Mervyn Abrahams, Programme Coordinator at PMBEJD. Guests: Mervyn Abrahams About the Household Affordability Index The Household Food Basket in the Household Affordability Index is a new basket and has been designed together with women living on low incomes in Johannesburg (Soweto, Alexandra, Tembisa and Hillbrow), Cape Town (Gugulethu, Philippi, Khayelitsha, Delft, Dunoon), Durban (KwaMashu, Umlazi, Isipingo, Durban CBD, and Mtubatuba), and Springbok (in the Northern Cape), and Pietermaritzburg. It includes the foods and the volumes of these foods which women living in a family of seven members (an average low-income household size) tell us they typically try and secure each month. The basket was designed through a pilot project which ran from April 2020 to August 2020. It cannot however be considered the basket for every family living on a low income in each area and for all areas covered. It is however considered a reasonable proxy for a food basket which women identified as including the most important typical foods which most households try and buy each month, given affordability constraints. The Household Food Basket is not nutritionally complete.

You might be mistaken for thinking that Hillbrow in Johannesburg is only known for its high level of population density, unemployment, poverty, prostitution and crime. It’s also where former accountant Sibongile Cele started a hydroponic farm on a rooftop (https://www.foodformzansi.co.za/urban-rooftop-farmer-making-a-difference-in-the-sky/) – embracing a new agricultural trend in which she farms fresh produce hydroponically. In this edition of Farmer’s Inside Track she speaks about the moment in which she decided to exchange her life in the corporate world to literally make a difference in the sky. Every morning on the top of  The Outreach Foundation (https://outreachfoundation.co.za/wp/)  building, you will find Sibongile Cele working on one of just a handful of urban rooftop farms in Gauteng. Woman alone, tending her crops, which includes spinach, lettuce, basil, parsley and an assortment of other herbs. Her hands bring to harvest organically grown produce of the highest quality and, in the process, debunk the malignant stereotypes that beset the national view of Hillbrow as a slum beyond repair and rescue. The interviewers are Dawn Noemdoe and Ivor Price from Food For Mzansi. Farmer’s Inside Track (http://www.farmersinsidetrack.co.za/) is a platform for South Africa’s up-and-coming farmers and new entrants into agri-businesses who need information and inspiration to help them start up and get up to sprinting speed as commercial producers and/or agri-processors. This platform is a resource of exclusive content and an online community that aims to support up-and-coming commercial farmers through that tricky phase of their businesses that comes between the starter pistol and finding their stride in the sprint towards the finish line. At the centre of it is a free weekly Farmer’s Inside Track e-mailer containing a mix of exclusive content from agricultural thought leaders, business and entrepreneurship experts and leading farmers as well as a comprehensive rundown of need-to-know news from the past week. Guests : Tebogo Mabye Tebogo Mabye was dreaming of success, even while living on the streets. His hometown, Hillbrow, is synonymous with poverty, crime, and constant police sirens – but also a community who refuses to give up.Though he wasn’t ashamed of being raised in shelters, Mabye wanted more out of life. After finishing matric, Mabye interned at Mould Empower Serve, an NGO that assists impoverished people. At work, Mabye developed a penchant for the caffeine culture that fuelled his co-workers. Whether chatting with each other or engaging in meetings, people in the office always had a cup of freshly-pressed java in hand. With the heartbeat of Hillbrow pounding inside him, Mabye envisioned starting a café. Exactly two years after announcing his goal, he opened the doors of Hillbrewed Coffee Co – named in homage to the place that inspired him. Grace Grace, a Brown Swiss cow, was in tremendous pain. She was just shy of five months old when she fell off the back of a truck. Immediately after, another stroke of bad luck hit her – a car collision. Her injuries, which included a dislocated hip, were critical. Fortunately, Grace received a second chance at life. In the process, she made history. At the site of the accident, Grace was extremely vocal. It was obvious that she needed medical help. Grace was transported to Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute, where she became the very first cow to receive a hip transplant. After surgery, Grace arrived at Asher’s Farm Sanctuary with a new skip in her step, moo’ing profusely as if to thank her helpers. If the accident didn’t happen, it’s likely that Grace would have been auctioned. Her breed of cow is the second largest used for dairy farming. Once they stop producing milk, they’re sold to become meat at the young age of four, only a fifth of their average lifespan. Cows never forget this suffering. Now, Grace can live a long and loving life under the care of those who value her welfare. Animals are sentient beings. They deserve our respect. Jesse Breytenbach Jesse Breytenbach had too many friends lose the battle against breast cancer. The disease is unrelenting and information about it is scarce, making each attack a strike from the shadows. When people are diagnosed, they don’t always understand what warfare their body is about to face. So Breytenbach is shedding light on the fear and myths with something stronger – laughter. In collaboration with PinkDrive, an NGO that raises awareness to ensure early detection, Breytenbach created Girl Talk. The weekly comic strip is a humorous weapon addressing questions, interjecting stigmas, and spreading messages of hope. The primary characters of the comic, Thuli and Jo, represent the everyday lives of South Africans as they steer conversations towards breast cancer. The intimations braided into the colourful illustrations encourage those who aren't ill to attend regular check-ups, all while helping patients deal with their reality. Chanene van As Children are our future leaders, but are we doing enough to prepare them? The youth have the right to schooling. They also deserve additional resources that will open doors later on in life. Yet unlike bustling cities, many smaller areas only have access to the basics of education. Jamestown, a settlement on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, used to be one of them. Until Chanene van As saw an opportunity to do what she does best – facilitate the growth of young minds. Van As founded the Green Door Project, an after-school initiative to assist primary school girls who are at risk academically. With 18 years of teaching experience under her belt, Van As helps children discover and develop their talents. Between four and five in the afternoon, they learn to use their time constructively by choosing from a range of creative classes and participating in environmental exercises such as recycling and gardening. Tony Miyambo How do you express your truth? Tony Miyambo uses theatre to channel authenticity. Each of his globally-renowned shows displays the power of performance when it comes from an honest place. But keeping intentions pure can be tricky in an industry where acts are shaped to fit what society wants to see. In the harmony of poetry and acting, he found his calling. His father’s encouragement was the catalyst to Miyambo’s future as a performer. When he passed away, Miyambo created The Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri. The one-man act recreates his unabated grief and pulls at the audience’s heartstrings. By writing, directing, and acting in his own productions, Miyambo fully inhabits his characters. The stage becomes a foundation of purpose and a space to work through issues of racism, suffering, and transformation. Aaniyah Omardien Talking about marine conservation isn’t enough. The shocking state of our beaches demands immediate action. At coastal rock pools across the world, octopus, starfish, and anemone compete for space with cooldrink bottles, sweet wrappers, and fishing gut. These plastic items absorb harmful chemicals and pollutants. Over time, they break down and are ingested by sea creatures, bringing toxins into the food chain. A crisis of this magnitude warrants a collective movement. Aaniyah Omardien is gathering the masses to clean up this mess. In 2015, Omardien founded The Beach Co-op, a non-profit organisation committed to keeping South Africa’s seas healthy and plastic-free. The all-female team meet with volunteers every new moon to remove pollution from Surfer’s Corner on Muizenberg Beach. As an environmental scientist, Omardien also hosts events to track the ‘Dirty Dozen’, a selection of marine refuse that repeatedly washes up. This includes items such as earbuds, lighters, and lollipop sticks. Collecting and recording the debris allows Omardien’s team to observe the levels of trash in the water. With data, they can substantiate the urgency for a response.
