In this weeks episode Vonia covers the dark and twisty thanksgiving Rom Com(ish) film House of Yes. This 1997 gem stars an absolutely fabulous Parker Posey as Jackie O, the mentally unstable twin sister of Marty who is bringing his fiancée, Leslie (Tori Spelling), home for thanksgiving to meet his family. A raging storm cuts the power and as the night goes on this families dark secrets slowly start to reveal themselves to Leslie. Let's just say the movie ends with Leslie running screaming from the family home.   Then Averyn shares the true story of Alex Murdaugh and his family. The Murdaugh's were a wealthy, powerful family in Hampton County, South Carolina. For nearly a century the Murdaugh men were the law in their town, seemingly feared and respected by the community, until a shocking double murder in the summer of 2021. On June 7th 2021 Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, wife and son of Alex Murdaugh were found executed in the family's hunting lodge. Then, incredibly, just a few months later Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head while changing a flat tire. Who out there is targeting the Murdaughs? Strap in Rom Criminals because this one's a Doozy! We had the pleasure of interviewing Ariana and the Rose over Zoom video! Ariana and the Rose returns with “Every Body”, her first new music since pre-lockdown and the first glimmer of a sonic evolution steeped in personal perseverance and unbridled joy. In the past, Billboard has called Ariana and the Rose a “musical project specializing in lyrically sincere, sonically enveloping synth-pop”, and with “Every Body” she is fortifying her place in a pop world that desperately needs to dance again.Written and produced alongside longtime collaborator Andy Highmore (his credits include AlunaGeorge & The Knocks), “Every Body” uses its unrelenting beat and hypnotic soundscape to deliver a message of unity & inclusivity to the dance floor. The video (filmed at House of Yes in Brooklyn and directed by the Emmy-winning Jason Sherwood) conjures up pre-COVID memories of dancefloors, late night clubs, and freedom, finding Ariana and the Rose dancing amidst a crowd of nightlife & NYC/LA art world legends, in alphabetical order: Amanda Lepore, Bex, Cakes Da Killa, CT Hedden, The Dragon Sisters, Kandy Muse, Laith Ashley, Love Bailey, Madison Rose, Marizol, Merlot, Rhea Litre, Rify Royalty, Ryan Burke, Spencer Ludwig, Zero Waste DanielIn early spring 2020, Ariana had a whole album of songs ready to release throughout the summer - effervescent, hopeful and carefree. But when COVID-19 shook the world and sent us all inside, she found herself disconnected from the material and ended up scrapping all of it, not thinking it appropriate to celebrate amongst the pandemic and social unrest of the country. As quarantine continued, she started from scratch, writing, composing and recording the music she wanted to hear once the world opened up again and we could once again unite on the dancefloor. “Every Body” is the first taste. The release of “Every Body” follows recent skyrocketing success on TikTok, when a video of a piano-assisted spoken word piece she posted earned an astounding 8 million views on the social media platform in less than a week. The video gained extra exposure when it was shared by the likes of Betches (via Instagram), NYT best-selling author Meena Harris & Tony-nominated actress Laura Benanti. She will also hit the road with Torres this September & October, as well as take the stage at the Treefort Music Festival & Austin City Limits Live (full dates below & here). In the past, Ariana and the Rose has been called “a refreshing burst of authenticity” by LadyGunn, and she has earned acclaim from Consequence of Sound, Paper Magazine, Vice, Time Magazine, Refinery 29, LOGO, and more. She is also the curator of the immersive music and art party “light + space” which has had numerous events across Manhattan & Brooklyn (including a residency at House Of Yes), as well as one-off performances in LA and London. We want to hear from you! Some films are big bets for studios...they put a lot of money, time and talent behind them, and then SOMETHING goes wrong and the film just FAILS. No rhyme or reason. THAT IS NOT THE CASE for the first film in our IT'S A DISASTER theme -- 1997's Sundance black comedy darling, The House of Yes. This BONKERS film has very. clear. reasons. for not succeeding -- even with Miramax and the great Aaron Spelling behind it. Starring Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton, Freddie Prinze Jr., and the unofficial mascot of our podcast, Ms. Tori Spelling, this film is very much a play on screen -- and our wonderful special guest Ryan Davis (an actual Yale School of Drama Graduate!) introduces Graham and Katie to this taboo box-office flop, which holds a special place in his heart as a pinnacle of "women on the edge" films. You'll be shocked and yet CANNOT LOOK AWAY from the punchy, pithy, ping-pong dialogue and subversive comedic cues...so join us as we dive into this Jackie Kennedy-themed (sort of?) hurricane! Is it worse to do incest with your twin than a different member of your family? Is Parker Posey tired from running circles around her co-stars? In our Lunchtime Poll, we reminisce about the era-defining news stories that shaped us, and try very hard to think of a positive news story from the last twenty years.
