Guided by respected journalistic standards, the principle of fairness, the quest for truth, a commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, and an abiding admiration for the independent spirit of the Berkshires, The Berkshire Edge offers in-depth local news reports and features, perspectives on the arts, wide-ranging commentary, and a comprehensive calendar of events – all written, illustrated, and, in some cases performed, with wit, intelligence, insight and humor. Here are a few stories from the Edge this week: 1. Today we started Part One of aa six part series called The Developer. It's written by our in-depth/investigative reporter Bill Shein who has already done a multi-part series on housing in the Berkshires. The developer Ian Rasch emerged as a major player in that first series, and now Shein is looking at all the projects Ian Rasch is doing in the Great Barrington area, as a way to look into larger questions of development. 2. The Housatonic Water Works story continues. Our managing editor Shaw Izikson reported yesterday that the Great Barrington select board is now considering two options, each with its own pros and cons. The board has invited the Aquarian Water Company, which owns the water company in nearby Sheffield, to bid on buying HWW. The other option is to merge HWW with the Great Barrington Fire District which means, essentially that the town takes over the company. 3. It's election season, and we have two long-time incumbents running for re-election. We had a profile of Incumbent Congressman Richie Neal who has served in the House since 1989, even though the districts have changed, and he is now Chair of the House Ways & Means Committee. Neil is being challenged by Republican Dean Martilli from West Springfield who is accusing Neal of being a do-nothing follower of Nancy Pelosi. We expect soon to have a profile of Dean Martilli, whom we have interviewed. The other incumbent is State Representative Smitty Pignatelli, and we have received several letters of support for him that praise him for his dedication and omnipresence. We have not yet had any letters in support of his opponent Michael Lavery of Becket, who is running on the Green Party ticket. 4. For those of us old enough to remember, this week is the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and we have a very nice remembrance by a local contributor named Steve White who reflects on how seriously the country took that experience, White reminds us that we may be facing the same kind of crisis today. 5. In our Business Monday line-up, we had a profile of an extraordinary young woman named Madison Quinn who, at the age of 13, started a non-profit called Strong Little Souls to provide support and experience to children with pediatric cancer. Now in her early 20's, she has kept the organization going and growing for eight years now.

A Murder, or Hunting Accident?Deep in the Colorado wilderness, on the second day of hunting season in 1995, veteran police officer Doug Kyle came across what appeared to be a terrible tragedy. It would actually turn out to be much more complicated — and bone-chilling.Lying on the ground bleeding was Bruce Dodson, 48, with an orange hunting vest at his side. His wife of three months, Janice, was screaming for help. "I picked up the orange vest and was just screaming at him: 'Why didn't you have your vest on?' " Janice said."She's crying and carrying on," said Kyle. "I said, 'Is this your husband?' And she said, 'Yes, that's Bruce. Help — you've got to help him.' "Bruce was beyond help. He seemed destined to be yet another victim of a hunting accident, mistaken for game — a mistake that would repeat itself more than 100 times that year. But the day after, an autopsy revealed Bruce hadn't taken just a single bullet, but three. Bill Booth, an investigator for the district attorney's office, said he started to believe this was homicide. Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. To help support the show, find us on Patreon: patreon.com HWW is now on Discord: https://discord.gg/F9cMyf7JFJTo our amazing listeners. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaOn October 26, 2001, 25-year-old nursing assistant Chante Jawan Mallard struck 37-year-old Gregory Glenn Biggs, a homeless man, with her automobile, in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S. The force of the crash lodged Biggs into the windshield. Mallard then drove home and left the man lodged in the windshield of her car, parked in her garage. He died a day or two later. Mallard was convicted and sentenced to 50 years' imprisonment for her role in his death.Gregory Glenn Biggs, born August 16, 1964, was homeless and mentally ill. He was married, with one son, and worked in construction as a mason.Chante Jawan Mallard (born June 22, 1976) is a woman from Fort Worth, Texas. On October 26, 2001, Mallard's Chevrolet Cavalier struck the homeless pedestrian Gregory Glenn Biggs; at the time Mallard was believed to have been driving while intoxicated by a combination of marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol. The force of the impact sent Biggs flying through the windshield, lodging him there.Mallard then drove home, leaving the injured Biggs stuck in her windshield, and parked her car in her garage. After the accident, Mallard did not notify the police nor did she get Biggs any medical attention, even though she was a nursing assistant at the time. Occasionally, she would return to the garage to check on his status. When Biggs died a day or two later, still in the windshield of her car in her garage, she called a male friend, Clete Jackson, for assistance. Mallard, Jackson, and Jackson's cousin Herbert Tyrone Cleveland took the body to a park and left it there, even going so far as to set fire to part of the car in an attempt to disguise the evidence. The three were each convicted on charges of tampering with evidence for this action.Mallard became a suspect after she was reported talking and laughing about the incident at a party some four months after the events. "I hit this white man", Mallard allegedly told acquaintance Maranda Daniel, while laughingMallard's trial commenced on June 23, 2003. During the trial, Tarrant County medical examiner Nizam Peerwani testified that, had Mallard taken Biggs to a hospital, he would have recovered from his injuries. Other experts testified that they agreed that Biggs would have survived. "There's not a member of the Fort Worth Fire Department that could not have saved Mr. Biggs's life", testified Capt. Jim Sowder. Mallard was convicted of murder in June 2003, with the 50-year murder sentence and 10-year tampering sentence to run concurrently. She will be eligible for parole in 2027.Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. To help support the show, find us on Patreon: patreon.com HWW is now on Discord: https://discord.gg/F9cMyf7JFJTo our amazing listeners. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaEdward Theodore Gein (August 27, 1906 – July 26, 1984), also known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, was an American killer and body snatcher. Gein's crimes, committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety in 1957 after authorities discovered he had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. Gein also confessed to killing two women: tavern owner Mary Hogan in 1954 and hardware store owner Bernice Worden in 1957.Gein was initially found unfit to stand trial and confined to a mental health facility. By 1968, he was judged competent to stand trial; he was found guilty of the murder of Worden, but he was found legally insane and was remanded to a psychiatric institution. He died at Mendota Mental Health Institute of respiratory failure, on July 26, 1984, aged 77. He is buried next to his family in the Plainfield Cemetery, in a now-unmarked grave. Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. To help support the show, find us on Patreon: patreon.com HWW is now on Discord: https://discord.gg/F9cMyf7JFJTo our amazing listeners.     One of the things I get most stoked about when I look at the leaderless yet unstoppable growth of Bitcoin is the organic unity of minds that coalesce to bring new and exciting things into our reality. Unapologetically devoid of any central organising committee, but instead bound by the forcefield of Bitcoin's core principles of value, freedom and decentralisation, I am repeatedly left in wonderment watching waves of new initiatives breaking all over the world, promising new and exciting capabilities that have never existed nor even been possible before. Like SeedSigner (the nym – who we will now refer to as “SS” for the purpose of this brief article) and his creation of the SeedSigner (the project) – an open-source Bitcoin signing device developed to reduce the cost and complexity of executing multisig Bitcoin transactions. Driven by the proverbial mother of all invention, SS had been considering for some time how he could improve the security of his long-term Bitcoin holdings. Unhappy with his solution at the time – based on using Bitaddress.org to create wallets & private keys and then Shamir sharing/key sharding to add an additional layer of security – he was searching for something better.   "You start to wonder – as the gains happen – about your security setup. I wanted to get my security setup right, and multi sig was getting to the point where it was starting to be accessible to people”   When he became aware of the concept of multisig, I suspect he probably didn't realise what a rabbit hole he'd stumbled upon. Tuning into an episode of the Stephan Livera Podcast with Michael Flaxman, he heard Flaxman describe a means to “10x your Bitcoin security” using new multisig via tools like Specter Desktop. The legions of Specter fans out there (and those of you who peeped our previous feature with key contributor Ben Kaufman) will already be aware that their excellent open-source repo not only contains the blueprints for its multisig wallet software, but a DIY hardware wallet build too. With his natural inclinations towards techie tinkering and 3D printing sufficiently piqued, SS figured he'd take a shot at putting a unit together to try out for himself. The experience, in short, blew his mind.   "The first time I signed a transaction with multisig, I can only compare it to the first time I sent a Bitcoin transaction or the first time I ever sent a lightning transaction; it was this magical lightbulb moment" SS   It was the start of something. When Flaxman subsequently tweeted about how cool it would be to have a neat enclosure to tidy up the loose parts and wires of his self-assembled Specter device, SS responded in the best way he knew and knocked-up a prototype for him. With Specter's innards now neatly stuffed inside a perfectly formed 3D-printed case, Flaxman described the experience of using it as a game changer: “You go from dangling loose wires to a securely mounted professional (enough) device with NO SOLDERING”.   "For me, it was kind of a game to see how low I can drive the price down to get this basic signing functionality; where people can use the device to create private keys and then set up a wallet and actually transact with the Bitcoin network" SS   Buoyed by the experience, the pair started talking about using a much cheaper, stripped-down Pi ‘Zero' and small Waveshare LCD which could be used as an air-gapped device for calculating the 24th (checksum) word in a seed. SS then decided to add a camera to the unit which would allow users to scan QR codes and sign transactions, turning it into a fully-functional transaction signing device that fundamentally does the same job as the Specter HWW but with some of its more high-end bells & whistles stripped out. In doing so, the price point (and physical size) could be reduced, allowing far more people to access the unit's seed-generation, seed-import and transaction signing capabilities. And with that, the SeedSigner was born. With cheap and widely available off-the-shelf components, SeedSigner now provides a naturally inexpensive, open-source, air-gapped signing system which carries a higher degree of security assurance than some of the more high-end, network-attachable devices. But why would anyone want an inexpensive signing device that you can assemble yourself using innocuous doodads sourced from any major electronics store, I hear you ask? Well, for starters, go and speak to any Ledger customer. A hack of Ledger's customer records database sadly compromised tens of thousands of customers' private data, including names, physical addresses and emails, reportedly causing a great deal of stress and countless threats and scam attempts being made on many of them. The whole episode, and the fallout since, has served as an important reminder that privacy is a one-way street, that private data has value, and that once your info is out there it is hard (if not impossible) to claw back. Thus being able to get your hands on a secure, fully-functional Bitcoin signing device without having to disclose any personal contact information is a great thing.   Secondly, when generating or entering your seed on a regular network-connectable HWW/signing device, you are placing some level of trust in the firmware developer that they have not introduced an exploitable backdoor. It might not be a worry shared by everyone, but if you are like me and have little capability to meaningfully audit code yourself, having a fully air-gapped solution like SeedSigner that has no network-attachability and which solely references visible QR codes is a welcome assurance that backdoors are unlikely.   "Something we've explored is having either a setting or a default mode where, when you first turn the device on, it brings up a snake or a Pac Man-type game" SS   "I personally have a bunch of multisig setups, but I'm pretty sure one SeedSigner is going to replace all my current hardware wallets. Especially for my backup cosigners – no need to keep buying those backup hardware devices" Keith Mukai   Then there's the fun stuff. The fresh perspectives and problem solving skills that SS and project contributor Keith Mukai and Newtonick bring to the mix in their development of SeedSigner are leading to some really cool micro-innovations and UX approaches.   A favourite of mine which they came up with recently is their introduction of a QR code transcription template & workflow. You see, with there being no retained storage capability on the device, each time users boot up the Seed Signer, they are forced to enter their seed anew. But with most seeds comprising 24 words, it can take a few minutes to enter them using the joystick and button controls as users scroll through the words on the device's small screen.   So they came up with an ingenious way to firstly give users the ability to generate a QR-version of their chosen seed words on the device itself, and secondly to then walk them through the transcription of the code onto a piece of paper using a felt-tip pen (analog FTW!). What this compellingly low-tech workflow gifts to users is the ability to scan the hand-drawn (and therefore air-gapped) QR-code back into the device via the camera instead of manual entry whenever the user wants to sign a transaction. Now who wouldn't want to give that a spin?! Not me, is who!   "A big turn around for the project was when Nick and Keith came in. Nick forked the original repo and then rewrote the whole code base to lay the groundwork for where we are today. Keith is hugely creative, especially on the UI side, and has brought some awesome new feature ideas to the project. They collaborate really well – there's a bit of ying & yang between them" SS   When experimenting with the concept, they found that QR codes are remarkably resilient and very forgiving in how neatly the codes need to be when hand-drawn – a boon for anyone with messy handwriting. Who knew? And if you're worried about your QR code paper copy falling into the wrong hands accidentally, then the solution to that is the same as you would use to protect your seed words properly – robust, secure physical storage and employment of a passphrase. Boom. Risk mitigated. And last but not least, there's the price point. $50 for an air-gapped multisig transaction signing device that allows you to create or import your own seed, export an xpub, sign your transactions in a safe and secure manner and essentially kickstart your sat stacking journey without any 3rd parties knowing about it? As Keith Mukai explained to me, you now have the ability to use one piece of cheap hardware to sign for basically infinite keys – which is a big deal for anyone who might not want to drop hundreds of dollars for several name-brand HWWs. This opens up the option for a family or even, say, a small El Salvadoran village to be able to share one device amongst themselves. Cypherpunk af!   "[At first] I just kind of tinkered with it – you're kind of scratching your own itch, and just trying to bring something that you want to see into existence" SS   So if you've been flirting with the idea of trying multisig quorum set-ups for yourself but have hesitated because of cost concerns or complexity worries with more established hardware wallet vendors, I suggest you try these bad boys out. And if you're way ahead of me on this and keen to contribute some help to this awesome project, the team would love to hear from you. Now that the overall code structure has been established, they are iterating and making improvements where they see the need and also seeking contributors to create walkthroughs/tutorials on building and using SeedSigner and technical users who can help to test new features and upcoming releases. Monday Motivation - Some Changes for How Writers Write

How Writers Write

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2020 8:29

Hello and Welcome! This isn't going to be a Monday Motivation per se, more of a general catch up episode. There are so many changes happening in my life and for HWW that I wanted to take a week to just communicate them all at once.So first, some personal news. In about three weeks my family and I will be relocating to Denver, Colorado. Even before COVID hit, we had eyed moving back to sunny-ol Colorado. While we will miss our Brooklyn life and friends, it feels like we are stepping into a beautiful new chapter of life with a little older kids. We all want to play hard in the mountains. We have a great apartment that is still being built and I've secured an office. So, that brings me to How Writers Write. The month of July is going to be really insane with the move AND with the fact that I am finishing off the content for a brand-new program called HappyWriter.I kicked around a lot of ideas, but ultimately, I wanted to deliver a program that was TRANSFORMATIONAL. Traditional writing programs like MFAs, undergrad degrees, books, online courses on teach the "what" of the writing life. So, things like and character, plot and character. And while those things are critical, we super under develop how to get those to get those things onto the page. The how is routine, rituals, discipline... the building blocks of producing results. You can be the best writer in the world and know exactly what to write, but if you don't know how to consistently put words on the page, what does it matter? This is the secret I've learned from interview 50+ authors. They aren't always the best writers, but they are the best at consistently working to get the results they want. The promise of HappyWriter is to turn any writer into lean, mean writing machine. No more struggling to get words on the page. No bouts of crippling doubt. I'm still ironing out the last details, but expect HappyWriter to be eight weeks of live classes and content, a HUGE community component, and lots of accountability both in the course and tools to build lifetime accountability to your goals. This program is truly the best I can offer. It is for the hardcore. The ones with big dreams. The ones who have to write and when they are really honest with themselves, the ones who want to write for a living. So, with the move AND launching a new premium program, I'm going to have about a month hiatus from doing new Monday Motivations. Instead, I'm going to post the audio from my favorite writing speeches. Luckily, author interviews are already recorded so you'll have fresh episodes, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up.Okay, so, last point... in the new HWW future, we are going to pull back in some areas and overinvest in others. What does that practically mean? In August, I'll be launching a YouTube channel with weekly videos on both the how and what of the writing life. Stay tuned for how you can check out that new content. Also, starting sometime in August, all author interviews will also be recorded in video, so you can check them out on YouTube and Instagram as well. I'm also adding new content to YouTube that I am so so so so excited about. This is a really exciting time for me and How Writers Write. I'm excited to step into this new season and truly live my dream by inspiring and empowering writers to tell their story.Support the show (http://www.howwriterswrite.com)

How Writers Write
Monday Motivation - The Willful Disregard of Rationality

How Writers Write

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2020 5:05

Now, that is a really fancy title for a simple yet profound decision. It is a cornerstone of being a writer. Not just writing a book or working a project, but becoming someone who is a writer from the inside out. The willful disregard of rationality is the way in which, as a writer, you look at a project that by all measurements should be impossible for you to complete, and yet… you decide to do it anyway. As writers, we feel this impossibility at the onset of each new project. When you first start writing, the idea of taking a short story or novel seems irrational. There is a mountain of things you don’t know how to do. There is a technique you don’t have. Later, taking on complex plots and dynamic characters, you might feel as if you aren’t smart enough or capable. At each new step, there is a perfectly rational reason why you shouldn’t be able to work on a project. And yet, as writers, we must find a way to willfully disregard the rationality of what we do. We must stop asking, “is it probable,” and instead ask a new, insanely powerful question, “is it possible?” I’ve yet to coach a single person who after a long, heartfelt monologue about the logical reasons of why I will not complete a project are more or less ground to a pulp when I ask, “yes, those are all true, but is it possible?” The two most common responses are a long pause, and I mean sometimes 20-30 seconds of silence. Or, a deep sigh, as if I’ve voiced exactly what the person already knows. Because spoiler, I’m just reminding here of you of what you already know. Here is my own flow of thoughts to pivot from rationality to possibility:1. Is the project that I want to take on possible? Yes.2. Am I capable today of writing it today? No. 3. Am I capable of learning how to become the writer who can write it? Yes.4. Who is the writer who can write it? That’s the answer of who I must become. You’ll find when you leave out the question of whether something makes sense, and instead turn your focus the story you want to tell, the entire world opens up to you. Thank you for listening, and I hope you have a wonderful week of writing. Before we go, I want to share my gratitude for this amazing community. You know, when I launched How Writers Write last year, I had so many questions that I knew I could only answer by actually doing this thing. I had no idea if anyone would listen to this podcast. I had no idea if the message would resonate. I am so honored and floored that I get to do this each week and share what is on my heart with you. So, I just want to say thank you. A lot you I don’t know, but by engaging with HWW, you’ve given my life new purpose, in that I now serve a community I love. Thank you again for listening, and I hope you have a wonderful week of writing.Support the show (http://www.howwriterswrite.com)

Keep on going. Hard work works, always!! #buildinghealthybodies

#hardworkworks Team BHB!

Also! Does Ben need a new lawyer? How hard is it to keep the One Armed Man from escaping? And where does one go in a town like Twin Peaks for good, quality showtunes? (Apparently, all you need is a car and a set of golf clubs...) We may as well call this The Jerry Show since so many of our clips selected for this week's episode feature his classic deadpan humour, but after the darkness of last week's episodes, we were just so glad for Jerry Horne we couldn't resist!
