After spending nearly a month in Rome, Bishop Barron has just returned from the concluding session of the Synod on Synodality. However, numerous basic questions remain among the faithful: What challenges were discussed during this synod and what solutions, if any, did the attendees reach? What impact, if any, does either the structure or content of the synod have on the Church's ability to evangelize effectively both in the US and abroad? A listener asks how parishes should adapt to today's needs. 00:00 | Intro 01:27 | A visit to the Czech Republic 03:10 | What is synodality? 06:58 | The Instrumentum Laboris and its role in the synod 07:56 | Who attended the synod? 09:14 | Relating 2023's synodal gathering to 2024's 11:09 | Bishop Barron's daily routine in Rome 16:20 | Communio theology as represented at the synod 19:27 | The teaching status of the recent synodal document 21:01 | Assessing the synod's benefit to the Church 22:35 | Limitations of synodality as a ruling principle 25:23 | The question of women's ordination 28:00 | Concerns for the authority of the local bishops' conferences 29:41 | Has this synod perennially changed the Church? 31:15 | The possibility of future synods 32:01 | Listener question 34:004 | Join the Word on Fire Institute Link: EWTN article: https://www.ewtnvatican.com/articles/synod-on-synodalitys-final-document-what-you-need-to-know-3645 E&C Online article: https://www.wordonfire.org/articles/barron/some-thoughts-upon-returning-from-the-second-session-of-the-synod/ Word on Fire Institute: https://institute.wordonfire.org/ NOTE: Do you like this podcast? Become a Word on Fire IGNITE member! Let Me Be Frank | Bishop Frank Caggiano's Podcast | Diocese of Bridgeport, CT

There is a lot going on in the midst of this summer – with the National Eucharistic Congress, the US elections, and more. It's almost easy to forget that the Synod on Synodality is moving forward in Rome, but it is… and the Instrumentum Laboris was just published, setting the table for the sessions ahead. On Let Me Be Frank, Bishop Caggiano offers a timely and important discussion on the Synod on Synodality… within the context of the history of synods, what synods are and what they are not, and how they fit into the structure of the Church.

The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls. Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. Together in this 53rd episode they consider the contents of the document and the extent to which it might be described as authentically Catholic. They also address concerns about whether the working document is in fact an exercise in political modernity which is starkly at odds with the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church.

A vivid definition of the Catholic Church is attributed to the literary giant James Joyce: Catholic means “here comes everybody.” Never in recent history has that felt more accurate than during the current Synod on Synodality. Lots of AMDG listeners have been active in the synod, participating in this global process of spiritual conversation and consultation. The synod comprises several stages, from the listening sessions in local churches all the way to the upcoming gatherings of the Synod of Bishops in Rome in October 2023 and 2024. For the first time ever, about 20% of the voting members of the synod will be made up of lay women and men. And last week, the General Secretariat of the Synod in Rome published a 60-page document called the “Instrumentum Laboris,” which will be the basis of the work of the Synod fathers and mothers when they gather. Unlike previous Synods, this Instrumentum Laboris is not a document to be amended and approved, but a series of questions on key topics related to communion, mission and participation in the church. The document itself is an incarnation of synodality, which makes space for all participants to be heard. One of the Synod team members who collaborated on this working document is Professor Anna Rowlands, today's guest. Anna holds the St. Hilda Chair in Catholic Social Thought and Practice at Durham University in the United Kingdom. She is a political theologian who works at the intersection of political and social theory and Christian theology. Anna is the author of an acclaimed book on Catholic Social Teaching titled “Towards a Politics of Communion: Catholic Social Teaching in Dark Times,” which was published in 2021. Anna is one of the few people on Earth who have read pretty much every word submitted to Rome from the church all over the world, so she brings an incredible wealth of experience and a truly global perspective to the conversation. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked her how the working document was shaped and for her take on the key themes that animate it. It is fascinating to hear what most surprised her as she took in such a enormous volume of testimony from every continent. We hope Anna's reflections will be a useful introduction for you and that you'll have the chance to read and pray with the working document, maybe even in spiritual conversation with people in your own local community. Aprirà a pincopallino purché ecologico? Perché i preti pure?

Francis Watch

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2014 157:32

On this month's episode of Francis Watch, we return to a full cast and have to cover an immense amount of material dating back to June. So the listener has fair warning that we go into extra innings on this episode simply trying to cover the copious amount of news stories that have arisen over the summer. This episode is broken into two halves: in the first half we go through various news stories revolving around the new and false gospel of Francis, and in the second half, we cover the preparations for the October Synod (properly spelled SIN-od) which is due to begin October 5, 2014. We begin the show by giving a reflection of where we are 18 months into Bergoglio's so-called Pontificate, then we move on to the news stories. In the first half we talk about: The appointment of Blase Cupich at the new Novus Ordo Archbishop of Chicago and what that appointment says, more "reform of the Papacy" in conformity with the ecumenical directives of Vatican II at the behest of lay monk Enzo Bianchi, more Francis denouncement of "law and order Christianity," Francis' admonition to the Bishops to stop "defending their own borders" and make no effort to convert people, Francis once again telling people "not to be slave to little laws" (like adultery), the Dr. Robert de Mattei article which lambasts Vatican II as a de-dogmatization of Catholicism and a substantial change of Catholic doctrine, more tripe about not judging, Francis doubling-down to once again boldly and objectively deny the miracle of Our Lord feeding the five-thousand, Francis' new (and false) gospel telling the masses that we encounter Our Lord Jesus Christ in our sins, Francis telling Evangelicals that he does not want them to convert to the Novus Ordo religion, Francis' demotion Novus Ordo Cardinal Raymond Burke - the traditionally-minded nuisance who has been given his walking papers as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura for a patronship of the Order of the Knights of Malta, and much more in this segment. In the second half, we focus on the upcoming Synod in which has everyone braced for a formal defection from Catholic doctrine. We will discuss the preparatory document Instrumenum Laborisand the four key issues that this Synod is going to address and how in all likelihood, it is going to produce a formal break from Catholic doctrine relating to the Catholic understanding of marriage, the rules on reception of the Sacraments for the divorced and re-married, "same-sex" couples, as well as issues revolving around the sixth and ninth commandments. We will hear Bishop Sanborn's & Father Cekada's predictions for what they think we will see on the other side of this event. Join us as His Excellency Bishop Donald Sanborn, rector of Most Holy Trinity Seminaryin Brooksville, Florida and Father Anthony Cekada, assistant pastor of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio are accompanied by host Justin Soeder as they comment on these and other topics another jam-packed installment of Francis Watch.
