In this episode I discuss deadlines, and the critical difference between the artificial ones we create to manage our lives, and the real ones dictated by nature.I discuss how our manufactured deadlines run counter to the natural rhythm humans use to create, and how we need to somehow reconcile our modern use of manufactured deadlines with the realization that good solutions only exist at nature's deadlines. I spend time describing nature's deadlines as high points in complexity, and put forward what I think is the best way to ensure we build what nature expects while still meeting the deadlines we create.Support the showmedium.com/nontrivial

Causal invariance is one of the most important concepts in the Wolfram model... and one of the most difficult to capture. So I really wanted to hear Jonathan Gorard's take on it.In this excerpt from our conversation, Jonathan addresses the differences between causal invariance and confluence.Causal invariance means that regardless of the order in which a rule is applied to the hypergraph, the same events occur, with the same causal relationships between them.Confluence, on the other hand, is the coming-together of different branches of the multiway graph.Jonathan explores different ways we might determine whether two nodes, two edges or two hypergraphs are the same, and explains that if we identify nodes and edges according to their causal histories, then causal invariance and confluence become the same idea.I've found myself listening to Jonathan's explanation of causal invariance over and over to make sense of it, but it's one of the areas where I'm convinced Jonathan has a unique contribution to make.—Jonathan Gorard • Jonathan Gorard at The Wolfram Physics Project • Jonathan Gorard at Cardiff University • Jonathan Gorard on Twitter • The Centre for Applied Compositionality • The Wolfram Physics ProjectConcepts mentioned by Jonathan • Causal invariance • Multiway system • Causal structure • Causal Set Theory • Directed acyclic graph • Isomorphic • Space-like separation • Simultaneity and simultaneity surfaces in relativity • Lorentz invariance • Poincaré invariance • Conformal invariance • Diffeomorphism invariance • General covariance • Confluence • Church-Rosser Property—I release The Last Theory as a video too! Abstract: A defining characteristic of intelligent systems, whether natural or artificial, is the ability to generalize and infer behaviorally relevant latent causes from high-dimensional sensory input, despite significant variations in the environment. To understand how brains achieve generalization, it is crucial to identify the features to which neurons respond selectively and invariantly. However, the high-dimensional nature of visual inputs, the non-linearity of information processing in the brain, and limited experimental time make it challenging to systematically characterize neuronal tuning and invariances, especially for natural stimuli. Here, we extended "inception loops" -- a paradigm that iterates between large-scale recordings, neural predictive models, and in silico experiments followed by in vivo verification -- to systematically characterize single neuron invariances in the mouse primary visual cortex. Using the predictive model we synthesized Diverse Exciting Inputs (DEIs), a set of inputs that differ substantially from each other while each driving a target neuron strongly, and verified these DEIs' efficacy in vivo. We discovered a novel bipartite invariance: one portion of the receptive field encoded phase-invariant texture-like patterns, while the other portion encoded a fixed spatial pattern. Our analysis revealed that the division between the fixed and invariant portions of the receptive fields aligns with object boundaries defined by spatial frequency differences present in highly activating natural images. These findings suggest that bipartite invariance might play a role in segmentation by detecting texture-defined object boundaries, independent of the phase of the texture. We also replicated these bipartite DEIs in the functional connectomics MICrONs data set, which opens the way towards a circuit-level mechanistic understanding of this novel type of invariance. Our study demonstrates the power of using a data-driven deep learning approach to systematically characterize neuronal invariances. By applying this method across the visual hierarchy, cell types, and sensory modalities, we can decipher how latent variables are robustly extracted from natural scenes, leading to a deeper understanding of generalization. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.11.528121v1?rss=1 Authors: Nisar, I. Abstract: How is curvature coded in the early human visual system? This question is the essence of basic shape recognition and may explain why humans are so successful in recognizing objects under difficult and varying environment conditions. We use the circle-polygon illusion ~cite{Khuu2002}, to reveal coding mechanisms in the early visual system. The stimulus, constructed by Sakurai's method ~cite{Sakurai2014}, is a static dark outline circle augmented with a 2 Hz pulsed luminance gradient around the inner border. Both the radius and eccentricity of the stimulus were varied in a crossed design over 1-8 deg. Observers reported a circle or the polygon order and the strength of the percept. We test a lower level account that argues for curvature opponency between neurons against a higher level account that codes for whole shapes. This higher level account supports scale invariance, a property through which we recognize objects regardless of the object's rotation (or orientation) and its size on the retina. We show the following: (1) Scale invariance, a property of the higher level visual system feature through which we recognize objects regardless of the object's rotation (or orientation) and its size on the retina, is not obeyed during adaptation. The mean order of the perceived polygon increased with stimulus size and decreased with eccentricity. It did not remain constant for a stimulus size. This demonstrates that the curvature coding occurs in the early visual system. (2) Linear regression analysis reveals that the cortical size of the stimulus is a better predictor of perceived polygon order. We computed the circumference of each stimulus in both retinal and cortical coordinates, taking cortical magnification into account. Copy rights belong to original authors. In 1997, Christopher Miller lucked his way into a meeting with Disney's TV Animation Department - and he turned them down, because he had to study for midterms. But when he finally did go to LA and meet with Disney, he brought along his best friend, Phil Lord. Twenty years later, Lord and Miller were chosen to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story, after a meteoric rise from writers of oft-cancelled sitcoms to one of the most well regarded directing teams in Hollywood. They would not finish the film, but the marks they left on it would be deep, and unexpected, and many of them would involve Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs Miller. Lorentz invariance violation induced threshold anomaly versus very-high energy cosmic photon emission from GRB 221009A by Hao Li et al. on Monday 17 October It is reported that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) observed very high energy photons from GRB 221009A, with the highest energy reaching 18 TeV. We find that observation of such high energy photons is a quite nontrivial fact since extragalactic background light could absorb these photons severely and the flux is too weak to be observed. Therefore we discuss the potential new mechanism for us to observe these photons, and suggest that Lorentz invariance violation induced threshold anomaly of the process (gammagammato e^-e^+) provides a candidate to explain this phenomenon. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.06338v3

Searching Lorentz invariance violation from cosmic photon attenuation by Hao Li et al. on Wednesday 12 October Lorentz invariance violation~(LIV) can change the threshold behavior predicted by special relativity and cause threshold anomalies which affect the propagation of cosmic photons. In this work, we focus on the threshold anomaly effect on cosmic photon attenuations by extragalactic background light~(EBL) and discuss how to identify LIV from observations of very high energy~(VHE) photons propagated from long distance in the universe. We point out that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO), one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays currently operating at TeV and PeV energies, is an ideal facility for performing such LIV searching. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05563v1

Exploring Anisotropic Lorentz Invariance Violation from the Spectral-Lag Transitions of Gamma-Ray Bursts by Jin-Nan Wei et al. on Monday 10 October The observed spectral lags of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been widely used to explore possible violations of Lorentz invariance. However, these studies were generally performed by concentrating on the rough time lag of a single highest-energy photon and ignoring the intrinsic time lag at the source. A new way to test nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating effects has been proposed by analyzing the multi-photon spectral-lag behavior of a GRB that displays a positive-to-negative transition. This method gives both a plausible description of the intrinsic energy-dependent time lag and comparatively robust constraints on Lorentz-violating effects. In this work, we conduct a systematic search for Lorentz-violating photon dispersion from the spectral-lag transition features of 32 GRBs. By fitting the spectral-lag data of these 32 GRBs, we place constraints on a variety of isotropic and anisotropic Lorentz-violating coefficients with mass dimension $d=6$ and $8$. While our dispersion constraints are not competitive with existing bounds, they have the promise to complement the full coefficient space. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03897v1
Cosmic searches for Lorentz invariance violation by Carlos Pérez de los Heros et al. on Wednesday 14 September Cosmic messengers (gamma rays, cosmic rays, neutrinos and gravitational waves) provide a powerful complementary way to search for Lorentz invariance violating effects to laboratory-based experiments. The long baselines and high energies involved make Cherenkov telescopes, air-shower arrays, neutrino telescopes and gravitational wave detectors unique tools to probe the expected tiny effects that the breaking of Lorentz invariance would cause in the propagation of these messengers, in comparison with the standard scenario. In this chapter we explain the expected effects that the mentioned detectors can measure and summarize current results of searches for Lorentz violation. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.06531v1
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.08.507096v1?rss=1 Authors: Cheon, J., Baek, S., Paik, S.-B. Abstract: The ability to perceive visual objects with various types of transformations, such as rotation, translation, and scaling, is crucial for consistent object recognition. In machine learning, invariant object detection for a network is often implemented by augmentation with a massive number of training images, but the mechanism of invariant object detection in biological brains - how invariance arises initially and whether it requires visual experience - remains elusive. Here, using a model neural network of the hierarchical visual pathway of the brain, we show that invariance of object detection can emerge spontaneously in the complete absence of learning. First, we found that units selective to a particular object class arise in randomly initialized networks even before visual training. Intriguingly, these units show robust tuning to images of each object class under a wide range of image transformation types, such as viewpoint rotation. We confirmed that this "innate" invariance of object selectivity enables untrained networks to perform an object-detection task robustly, even with images that have been significantly modulated. Our computational model predicts that invariant object tuning originates from combinations of non-invariant units via random feedforward projections, and we confirmed that the predicted profile of feedforward projections is observed in untrained networks. Our results suggest that invariance of object detection is an innate characteristic that can emerge spontaneously in random feedforward networks. Copy rights belong to original authors. One of the great photography myths is to NEVER shoot above 400 ISO. But Lou and Julie see it differently, given the impressive upgrades in technology. Do you know if you camera sensor is ISO invariant? Do you know what ISO invariance means? In this technical episode, Lou breaks down the DXO Mark sensor data for your camera system. Learn what are the optimal settings for your system and how to get every drop of tech out of your camera by understanding the science. Most people don't understand or have never heard of ISO invariance so they stay stuck shooting only at one ISO, fully ignoring the latests developments in technology and post-production software. It's quite possible you can be pushing your ISO's so much higher to gain precious shutter speed when necessary. But are you? Lou and Julie see far too many photographers buying innovative high-end equipment only to keep using the same settings they did with lower quality gear. Why? Because most people don't understand the science behind their system and how to harness that technological power to improve their images. Listen to this episode and never wonder again about how to get the most out of your camera, the sensor and make optimal lens choices. Stop limiting the use of that powerful technology you hold in your hands and start improving your results today.
Noether's theorem is an important theorem that relates invariance of space-time transformations to the laws of conservation: space-translation invariance to the conservation of linear momentum, space-rotation invariance to the conservation of angular momentum, and time-translation invariance to the conservation of energy. The models of physics are point-of-view invariant: physical models cannot depend on any particular position in space or moment in time.

The "What is Money?" Show ✓ Claim Podcast Notes Key Takeaways In essence, Gauge theory is a fancy way to say differential calculus where rise over run is measured from a reference level that is set internally within the theoryIn ordinary calculus, you have one reference level, in Gauge theory, you scale both the function and the derivative. The ruler of prices is goods, the ruler of goods is prices, both rulers are moving around and we call the measurement devices price and quantity indexes (CPI, GDP, etc.)The Marginal Revolution in economics mistakenly uses ordinary calculus. However, all of economic theory is a naturally occurring Gauge theory that has not been recognized. An important problem with Keynesian economics is trying to describe a physical system where human interference heavily impacts how the system behavesIn that sense, all analysis and equations are just guesses and modeling of how central bankers behaveKeynesian or not, a monetary system isolated from competition invites the least competent and most corrupt to control an economySatoshi effectively moved the physical world into the logical world by creating locally enforced conservation laws. However, the problem is having a blockchain recording everything permanently.Consider this, who would want a new form of gold that is constantly recording and announcing its transaction history?Beyond money, imagine porting rules of the physical world into the logical world. For instance, storing genes in a cell or on a hard drive, and creating one from the otherRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgEric Weinstein joins me for a multi-episode conversation covering mathematics, physics, history, politics, economics, and money.Be sure to check out NYDIG, one of the most important companies in Bitcoin: https://nydig.com/GUESTEric's twitter: https://twitter.com/EricRWeinsteinEric's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/ericweinsteinphdEric's Podcast: https://ericweinstein.org/PODCASTPodcast Website: https://whatismoneypodcast.com/Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-what-is-money-show/id1541404400Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/25LPvm8EewBGyfQQ1abIsE?si=wgVuY16XR0io4NLNo0A11A&nd=1RSS Feed: https://feeds.simplecast.com/MLdpYXYITranscript:OUTLINE00:00:00 “What is Money?” Intro00:00:08 Introduction to Gauge Theory00:06:06 Wittgenstein's Ruler, Invariance, and Co-Variance00:08:36 General Relativity, Prices, and Inflation00:10:58 Gauge Theory Says There is No “Universal Level”00:13:27 Marginal Revolution Using the Wrong Differential Calculus?00:16:48 Utility Theory: Ordinal vs. Cardinal00:19:37 The St. Petersburg Paradox00:23:06 Cardinal Utility Exhibits the Structure of a Principal Bundle00:24:41 NYDIG00:25:48 Economics as the Geometry of Markets00:28:54 Competition is Critical for Scientific Progression00:32:51 How Framing Changes What We See00:37:26 Exploring Gold as a Gauge Theory00:41:01 Transactional Anonymity as a Consequence of Gauge Theory00:42:50 Conservation Laws and the Double-Spend Problem00:44:42 Satoshi as the Originator of “Logical Physics”00:46:07 The Big Problem of Bitcoin?SOCIALBreedlove Twitter: https://twitter.com/Breedlove22WiM? In healthcare conversations, the "popular" topic of predictive analytics is often discussed, but infrequently is it understood. Without doubt, significant value can be realized using predictive analytics, but only if all the essential components are present. One of these critical components is measurement. Creating a measure that is calibrated to measure what you say it measures (it is accurate) requires three types of psychometric testing. Dr. John Nelson explains this in layman's terms, explaining how testing your measure for validity ensures it measures what you say it does; for reliability to ensure all who are responding to the survey understand the measure the same way; and invariance testing to compare demographics to ensure there is no bias from one group to another. Many of the "solutions" promoted by vendors today are based on measurements that are insufficient or irrelevant to an organization's or unit's context. In this episode, Dr. Nelson shares how you can approach measurement in a manner that will truly benefit you and your organization.

The Family's journey toward the stone giant city of Thancheim continues! Helpful Goat plays an experimental 1-shot RPG (and improvised sequel!) inspired by the 1989 Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher movie, The 'Burbs! Designed and GMed by Adam (Burbage Kemp in The Fates of Ryn, Silvyr Norran in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, GM of Big Gay Orcs) and streamed on Twitch on Thursday, October 24, 2019 as part of our Special Spooktober Stream Series! Warning: There's some potentially offensive/triggering content in this episode, including violent imagery, darkly comedic references to 9/11 and drug abuse, and jokes about Canada that only came about because one of the players rolled for their motivation to be "To get even with the dirty immigrants." Speaking of which, thank you to Jason Morningstar for the list of needs/motivations that we used (from the "Tales From Suburbia" Fiasco playset)! The premise: Mayfield Place. A cul-de-sac located in Hinkley Hills, a neighborhood of Des Moines, Iowa. 30 years ago, on this very street, Tom Hanks began suspecting that his new next-door neighbors were killers. While investigating with his man-child friends, he inadvertently blew up his neighbors’ house—and went down in history in the process.
