Musician and filmmaker Dimitri Coats — guitarist for the punk supergroup OFF! and frontman for Burning Brides — joins host Aaron Sagers to discuss his punk rock sci-fi comedy feature film Free LSD, which he wrote, directed and stars in, as well as his own paradigm shifting experience with potential extraterrestrials. Receiving comparisons to Repo Man, Free LSD also stars OFF! singer Keith Morris (from the bands Black Flag and Circle Jerks) in the lead role, and other musicians David Yow (The Jesus Lizard) Autry Fulbright (And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead), DH Peligro (Dead Kennedys), as well as Jack Black, Dana Gould, Chelsea Debo, Chloe Dykstra, James Duval, Barry Del Sherman, Chris D., E.R. Ruiz, Gill Gayle, Davey Havok, and S.A. Griffin. MORE ABOUT FREE LSD Keith, an elderly sex shop owner, falls for a younger woman who visits his store looking for a gift. When their relationship turns physical, Keith's failure to perform leads him to a strange erectile dysfunction doctor who offers hope in the form of an experimental drug. The experience gives Keith much more than renewed manhood. It also provides a glimpse into a parallel universe where he is not only the singer of the band OFF!, but also the target of an advanced AI species that will stop at nothing to prevent the group from making a new album, which holds the key to an awakening of human consciousness. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture podcast featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as learned experts in all things strange and unexplained. Actor James Duval joins us on the podcast to discuss his career in movies. We talk about his iconic roles in Gregg Araki's Teen Apocalypse Trilogy and his role in the. 1996 blockbuster epic Independence Day
Independent filmmaker Zach Clark joins to discuss the work of punk auteur legend Jon Moritsugu and his 1994 cult favorite Mod Fuck Explosion. A riff on classic Hollywood tales like West Side Story, the film is brash, outrageous, occasionally reprehensible, and is (in Zach's words) less about teen angst so much as it simply *is* teen angst manifested onscreen. We first discuss the singular style of Moritsugu as filmmaker, his movies' no-budget charms, and how their hyper-stylized aesthetic, formalism, and performances turn the film's budgetary limitations into distinctive attributes that call attention to the their own artifice. Then, we discuss Mod Fuck Explosion's brilliance as a totem of 90s teen ennui and an interrogation of Moritsugu's career-long targets such as the prison of domesticity, anti-Asian racism, and gender roles. Finally, we discuss why the film's of Moritsugu transcend basic descriptiors like satire and camp, embracing genuine sincerity and uncovering deep emotional truths with a commendable level of vulnerabiltiy. On the back half of the show, we spend some time discussing Zach's new film The Becomers, a 21st century take on science fiction B-movies about body snatching aliens finding love in the time of COVID. The Becomers is out on VOD today! Eric from Bloody Good Horror joins Caitlin to cover May, a cult classic from 2002. Many of us - for better or worse - have related to May at some point. She's an often-overlooked icon of the monstrous feminine, and we wanted to give her her due. We talk about themes of isolation, identity, and being an outsider, and we look at symbols around dolls and fragmentation. Tangents include: BGH origins, college loneliness, shoveling snow, favorite films, gangster movies, desert island books, songs of the moment, vampire universes, sleep sounds, scenes that made us horror fans, tea, and feet. Be sure to check out Bloody Good Horror and HY-FY! And remember: if you can't find a friend, make one.

Congrats, you found the portal that led you to our bonus episode in which we interview Frank the bunny himself, the wonderful James Duval! Our conversation with Jimmy was so fun and rich, we felt it deserved a bonus episode of its very own! We learn about the first time Jimmy met Drew Barrymore (hint, it was related to an unmade movie we've mentioned several times on the pod!), the bonus cameo his voice has in Donnie Darko, cast jam sessions in Jake Gyllenhaal's trailer, and what he feels is the heart of the movie. He's as much of a fan of this film as we are and it was truly an honor to discuss it with him!
Put on your rattiest bunny suit and good luck avoiding that falling jet engine as we moodily sleepwalk into 2001's Donnie Darko. Could this movie end friendships on this podcast? Is this a unique lucid dreamscape put on film, or just plain pretentious? Is Jake Gyllenhaal creepy or dreamy? And can we get a whole movie about Jolene Purdy's Cherita instead? You might find some answers in the Director's Cut of this super-sized episode.

Twist up your white girl dreads (or just don't, actually) and let's ride with Nic Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds. How angry is Jerry Bruckheimer that the Fast and the Furious franchise stole his thunder? Does this movie immediately take you back to the Year 2000 (insert requisite Conan audio cue)? Was there just no room in the budget to give Angelina Jolie even like a hint of character development? And Plot? Who needs a plot? You'll get some answers if you can keep up with our need for speed.
Dennis is joined via Zoom by filmmaker Gregg Araki (The Living End, Nowhere, Mysterious Skin) to discuss the re-release and restoration of his mid-1990s cult classic The Doom Generation, which stars Rose McGowan, James Duval and Johnathan Schaech. Gregg talks about what it's been like to revisit the film, what makes each of his three leads perfect for their roles, how the film got the subtitle “A Heterosexual Movie,” and how and why he cast people like Christopher Knight from The Brady Bunch, Lauren Tewes from The Love Boat and Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss in cameo roles. Gregg also talks about the darker themes of the movie and how young people today seem ever more doomed than they did in the 90's, how he approaches sex scenes, watching the movie again with an audience at this year's Sundance Film Festival and whatever happened to the kick-ass belt buckle Jonathan Schaech wore in the movie. Other topics include: his recent forays into television with his series Now Apocalypse and short-term directing gigs on shows like American Gigolo and Dahmer, why he called his production company Desperate Pictures, the upside of film school, his punk rock roots and that time a fan told him that watching The Doom Generation actually made him gay. www.strandreleasing.com

May (2002) is a 2002 American psychological horror film written and directed by Lucky McKee[3] in his directorial debut. Starring Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, and James Duval, the film follows a lonely young woman (Bettis) traumatized by a difficult childhood, and her increasingly desperate attempts to connect with the people around her. Although May was unsuccessful at the box office, it received favorable reviews from critics, and is now considered a cult film. “The Rabbit And The Butcher” An actor of tremendous range and versatility, the Michigan-born and L.A.-raised James Duval has had quite a career. He tore through the '90s, appearing in movies like The Doom Generation, SLC Punk Independence Day, Nowhere and Go, and by 2000, his resume was packed. He appeared as the rabbit Frank in Donnie Darko in 2001 and since then, he's added over forty films to his CV, including Kaboom, Blue Dream, Chasing Ghosts and Comic Book Villains. The preservation society around Donnie Darko has kept Frank the Rabbit very much alive in the public consciousness. And speaking of preservation societies, it turns out that James and I have been a part of the same one for many years. We're both massive Jazz Butcher fans and the Butcher Facebook group, which counted the Butcher himself, Pat Fish, as one of its active participants until his death last year, is a very special thing. it's a tight group made up people who really care about each other and who understand the magic of the music and how its informed their lives. The Jazz Butcher is for sure a band that existed below the radar of the mainstream, but to us, they were the biggest band in the world. And still are. In many ways, the Jazz Butcher are like Frank the Rabbit—eternal and unique and unforgettable to those who know about them. So James and I were at the same JBC show in 1997 and we talk about that and so much more. Great chat, great, great guy. www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com

Andy and actor James Duval talk about his work on Donnie Darko, filming and independent film and Independence Day at the same time, and life lessons learned from Godzilla. Intro music is "String Anticipation" by Cory Gray.
Welcome back Backstory fans! In this great episode we ring up actor James Duval. He has been in a ton of movies, with some favorites of ours being “Donnie Darko”,“Independence Day” and “Gone in 60 Seconds”. James sits down with us and talks about these roles and more in this wide ranging episode where we get to know more about him. We discuss his backstory to getting into acting, what it was like being on the set of some of the larger budget movies he has been in, as well as some of the indie films he has enjoyed doing just as much. We discuss his love of music, and we were a bit surprised to find out his favorite genre. We also discuss his new film, “I, Challenger”, in which he plays a slacker who wants to change his life, and comes up with the idea of live-streaming a self-burial stunt. What could go wrong? James was funny, charismatic, humble, and very kind during our chat, and we really enjoyed talking with him. It's an interview you don't want to miss!
“L.A is like… nowhere. Everyone who lives here is lost.” We put some gas in the VCR this week to talk about the Gregg Araki film Nowhere with guest Seth Shubin @jerkofalltrades. Described in the marketing as “90210 was on Acid” this cast is a who's who of up and coming Hollywood. With early appearances by Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, Scott Caan, Mena Suvari, Denise Richards, as well as Araki staple James Duval, Nowhere is one of the hidden gems of the 90s. We talk about the once again genius castings of his films (Christina Applegate, Guillermo Diaz, Kathleen Robertson), the more insane celebrity cameos, and terrific soundtrack that's still a staple of our car CD player. Get your date to Jujyfrui's party, (I thought YOU were going with Tomas?), and take the ride with us to Araki's teenage apocalypse. We made it to episode 150, and we finally got to the long awaited “Heterosexual Movie by Gregg Araki”, The Doom Generation with our friend Rudy Bleu. The anti-Clueless, this movie was every alternative young person's bible. Following two troubled teen lovers (James Duval and Rose McGowan) who pick up a mysterious drifter named Xavier (Jonathan Schaech) and run wild through the slums of the San Fernando Valley. The Doom Generation is quintessential 90s viewings. We talk about the sexual charge of Jonathan Schaech's eyebrows, James Duval's puppy dog delivery, the wild celebrity cameos by the likes of Eve Plumb, Amanda Bearse, Heidi Fleiss, and how iconic Rose McGowan is in that black bob. Grab some Doritos, and queue of your favorite industral track. It's the Doom Generation! Here's my interview with "Without Ward" director/writer Cory Cataldo and actor James Duval ("The Doom Generation," "Donnie Darko"). I really dug the film which stars Alexis Dziena, Marguerite Moreau, Harold Perrineau, Carole Ruggier and Martin Landau. The interview focuses on how Cataldo and Duval approached the narrative - plus there are some great recollections about Martin Landau.Timestamps:0:00 - Long winded intro by Greg Srisavasdi7:50 - "Without Ward" interview with filmmaker Cory Cataldo and actor James DuvalWithout Ward is now available on Digital (which includes iTunes).Check out Anderson's weekly movie reviews on his CCP YouTube Channel. For exclusive movie interviews, check out Greg Srisavasdi's Deepest Dream YouTube Channel Check out extra video content with Anderson, Me, Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes on the CinemAddicts/FYF Channel! Thanks again for your support, please rate and review CinemAddicts on Apple Podcasts! For our Patreon subscribers, our bonus episode of will have us each picking a movie from 1945.Anderson's Video Review of THE LOST CITYHAVE A CHAT WITH ANDY HERELinks to the promised CCP shorts are below.THE COLD COCKLE SHORTSRULES OF REDUCTIONMORMOANTHE CULT OF CARANOSubscribe to my Youtube Channel HereGROUPERS TRAILERPlease Give Groupers a Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score HerePlease Rate It on IMDB HereThe Blu-ray, USGroupers is now available on these platforms:The Blu-ray, InternationalOn AmazonOn Google Play On iTunesOn YoutubeOn Tubi On VuduSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/cinemaddicts)
On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards rip it up with venerable character actor and musician James Duval who has had one helluva career. His career starts with what would become a lifelong cinematic relationship. His work with filmmaker Gregg Araki has spawned four feature films, one MTV pilot and one television series including TOTALLY F***ED UP, THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE, KABOOM, "This Is How the World Ends" and "Now Apocalypse". Jimmy would go on to a career that spans over 30 years and over 175 credits. Some of his other most known films include early trangressive masterwork MOD FUCK EXPLOSION, INDEPENDENCE DAY (as Randy Quaid's son), Doug Liman's GO, the GONE IN 60 SECONDS remake (with Nic Cage and Angelina Jolie), SLC PUNK and it's sequel PUNK'S DEAD: SLC PUNK 2, the Sundance horror film MAY, he won an award for the film THE DOE BOY, SUSHI GIRL, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and, most recently, I, CHALLENGER (see episode 302!). There is one movie that he can never quite shake. It was a small Sundance film that rolled out to deathly box office numbers but over time has steadily become one of the most well-known cult films of all time. That, of course, is DONNIE DARKO where he plays Frank the Rabbit. Then there is the music side of Jimmy. As a guitarist he led a band called Antoneus Maximus & The Nuthouze Band and played in another called Gene Wilder with fellow filmmakers Brian McGuire and Bret Roberts. He associated strongly with jangle pop band The Jazz Butcher and worked with David J from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets. So get out your yoga mat, light some incense, drink some herbal tea as we venture into the career, loves and passions, and overall positive and energetic state of mind of one James Duval on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. Please remember to hit "like" and "subscribe" on our YouTube Channel, Spotify and iTunes. Tell your friends. If you have any comments, questions, ideas for topics or guests please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com. We'll get back to ya as soon as we ask Frank the Rabbit about this nuclear warhead that just rose up in our fucking living room
