Creativity through the lens of a screen writer, Emmy nominated producer and podcaster"Creativity is just creating something that wasn't there."Adam “Tex” Davis graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1993. A scant three years later he'd achieved great success -- as the night manager of Shaun's Bagels in Manhattan. But soon after, "Tex" sold his first screenplay, Sunburned, to Miramax and his second screenplay Just Friends to New Line Cinema. Just Friends went on to become a cult, rom-com classic starring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Farris. Other produced credits soon followed including Spring Break Lawyer, a made-for-cable comedy for MTV; and Gardener of Eden, a dark indie-comedy produced by Leonardo Dicaprio's Appian Way and directed by Entourage's Kevin Connolly. For nearly 20 years, Adam has written, rewritten, or punched-up over 25 feature film scripts for every major studio in Hollywood... and Bachelor Party 2. In addition, Adam has sold original comedy television series to the WB Network, CBS, and Comedy Central.Adam served as Co-Executive Producer and Head Writer for the Emmy nominated, genre-defining, global hit series Brain Games, for the National Geographic Channel. The success of Brain Games led Adam to co-form Atomic Entertainment, a full-service film & TV production company, for which Adam oversees creative content. Along with long-time friend, fellow NYU graduate, and collaborator Jerry Kolber, Atomic created the darkly-comic docu-series, The Internet Ruined My Life (SyFy) and Brainchild, a high-concept, kids' science/variety show, co-produced by Pharrell Williams for Netflix. Adam has also produced/ directed branded projects for Google, GE, IBM, Drone Racing League, Top Golf, Headspace & Conde Nast. With dozens of original projects airing or in the works, including What's Your Problem? and Making Magic -- Atomic continues its quest for global dominance. In his spare time, Adam continues to write original screenplays and create series ideas. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, daughter, dog, cat, and fish.https://www.linkedin.com/company/atomic-entertainment-group/https://www.instagram.com/atomicent/https://www.atomicentertainment.com/Send us a text

Eric from Bloody Good Horror joins Caitlin to cover May, a cult classic from 2002. Many of us - for better or worse - have related to May at some point. She's an often-overlooked icon of the monstrous feminine, and we wanted to give her her due. We talk about themes of isolation, identity, and being an outsider, and we look at symbols around dolls and fragmentation. Tangents include: BGH origins, college loneliness, shoveling snow, favorite films, gangster movies, desert island books, songs of the moment, vampire universes, sleep sounds, scenes that made us horror fans, tea, and feet. Be sure to check out Bloody Good Horror and HY-FY! And remember: if you can't find a friend, make one.

It's the 80's, there's a stolen car, sick synth beats, and a large bag of cocaine! It's time to party! This week the Mikes are looking at 2011's Take Me Home Tonight starring Topher Grace, Anna Farris, and Chris Pratt.Mike Field and Mike Butler discuss what makes this 80's themed movie work. Mainly all the drugs if they're honest. This is because of Dan Fogler's character, who's story revolves around a never-ending bag of cocaine. Though the movie might be par for the course in terms of college party gone wrong antics and young adults trying to find their way, the movie is a pretty fun ride, worth a watch. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. 00:00 - Introduction01:58 - Film Summary02:49 - Film Facts13:10 - Film Discussion47:15 - Critic Reviews54:51 - Why It's Forgotten1:00:57 - Where to Find Us
In today's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo puts on his tin foil hat to sit down and talk sci-fi with one of the genre's most beloved figures, David Duchovny (“The X-Files,” “Californication,” “Twin Peaks”). The actor/writer/director is currently out promoting a couple of projects dropping around the same time. First, his film, “The Estate,” in which two sisters, played by Toni Collette and Anna Farris, attempt to win over their terminally ill aunt in hopes of becoming the beneficiaries of large estate. Duchovny plays a seedy, perverted cousin, Dick, who also shows up with similar motives. The film also stars Dean Craig (“Death at a Funeral”), Kathleen Turner, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, and and more. During the chat, Duchovny shared that he requested a certain true story from his life be added to the film to really emphasize who his character truly is. He also spoke about potentially returning to the "X-Files" (it really depends) and talked about his new graphic novel, 'Kepler.' --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/support

This week, in Washington, North Carolina, a very strange scene unfolds, when a man who doesn't seem to have much going for him, except a vampire name, has many women at his disposal, including a wife, and a pair of identical twins. While he lives in a trailer with his wife, and a school bus, with his twins, this odd arrangement doesn't end up working for everyone, and it sends him into a rage. But who will be on who's side? And how does any of this result in bound, gagged people, and "skull plates" resting nearby. A twisted story, leading to a bloody mess, and an odd game of death penalty chicken!Along the way, we find out that breakfast is an important meal in the south, that having a vampire name doesn't make you an actual vampire, and when a pair of twins want blood, no one is stopping them!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! What made the internet angry this week?Chris Pratt made a schmaltzy post to his wife and everyone read way too deeply into it and extrapolated that it was a dig at his ex wife Anna Farris. Growing up in church makes you bitter. Mulaney's ex wife was a B-Word. Big bird got the jab and the right thinks it's tasteless propaganda. Politics are just a culture war now. “OH MY GOD! WE HIT A BOOT!“On this episode of Retro Grade Podcast, we take a look at a movie that meant a lot to the theater-going audiences of 2000. A movie that also meant a lot to Jorge's childhood. A movie that revived the spoof genre itself. We are talking about none other than, Scary Movie, directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans. This movie was one of the highest grossing films of 2000, earning more than ten times it's humble budget of 19 million dollars. The movie was so successful, a sequel was rushed out within the next year, and similarly themed spoof movies to follow suit until the genre eventually wore out its welcome with audiences, long after it did with critics. Not only was this important for the genre, but also, at the time of it's release, the highest grossing movie from a black director. It turned relatively unknown actors Anna Farris and Regina Hall, into movie stars. On the other side, re-watching this film in 2021, the film definitely doesn't hit the same. In fact, it might be the one movie that's aged the most, despite only being 21 years old. We talk about how the film relies on shortcuts by poking fun at marginalized groups (Doofy, Miss Man, and Ray) in an unsophisticated, almost mean-spirited way that just makes the film very hard to watch at times. We also talk about how some of the classic spoof gags work, but so many of them just seem to fall flat. How can a movie that has made people laugh so hard, and served as a launching point for people that Hollywood is definitely better for having, leave us feeling so icky? Give us a listen and find out!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

In particular, movies that are seen by critics and/or fans as flops/failures/average that we enjoyed or simply movies that we don't think have gotten the notoriety or praise that they deserve. Each week we will pick a different movie to discuss and talk about things we love about the movie, the actors, favourite scenes, quotes, behind the scenes trivia and even parts of the movies that didn't make sense or could have been done better. Maybe we find listeners that agree with us and maybe even change people's minds on some movies or think we are crazy for loving these movies.

Mona May is a costume designer for movies and television who travels the world for her career while her costumes have become iconic. I was fortunate to reach her on a short break between two film projects happening on different continents. While getting her start as a costume designer in the film “Clueless” as her first major project she was able to secure her future work by creating iconic outfits that are still copied two decades later. She has a storied career working with celebrities like Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Mendez, Nicolas Cage, Eddie Murphy, Demi Moore, Anna Farris, Will Ferrell and many more.It was a great talking about what it takes to make it as a costume designer in the entertainment business and interesting to find out that it's not all glamour and red carpet events. We talked about her mentoring people looking to get in to her field and how many of them find out that it can be more work than glamour. She uses her own experiences to help make sure others don't make the same mistakes she did.Like I said to Mona in the interview…..you know you “made it” when they take your design ideas and turn them in to Halloween costumes. She has definitely “made it” and I can't wait to see her latest work.About Mona MayMona May exploded onto the scene with the release of CLUELESS, a film that raised the status of fashion in film. The New York Times, Vogue Magazine, and Women's Wear Daily proclaimed CLUELESS & "the fashion movie of the year” and introduced a bold new Costume Designer to the world Capturing the rich-girl prep style with plaid skirts, knee-high socks, platform Mary Janes and feather-trim coats, Cher's (Alicia Silverstone) more than 60 costume changes were fresh, new and unusual, and created a vibrant style to emulate for a generation of girls learning how to dress.May's trademark joie de vivre is clearly evident in her work, and it injects bold, sexy confidence into her designs. She is a master at designing costumes that flatter her actors' body types, while simultaneously hitting pitch-perfect visual notes for the character they are portraying. May's dedication to the art of creating characters with fabric, textures, and color goes far beyond simply dressing the actors. It is an art that spans genres, time periods, and even media - ranging from live-action to CGI to classic cel animation - and creating a costume that moves believably from the real world to a virtual world is an intricate process. For STUART LITTLE 2, designing an entire wardrobe for a 4" digital mouse meant working closely with the visual effects team at Sony Imageworks to balance May's creative vision with that of director Rob Minkoff. The process starts with a sketch, before going to a virtual tailor, followed by a texture mapper and finally the lighting designer. Every detail, from the textures and patterns on the fabrics to the scale and placement of trims and buttons, are executed to May's exact specifications. There are times, however, when a director must rely on a designer's ingenuity for a character's technical effects. While filming THE HAUNTED MANSION, Mona created a "glow" that could be photographed in both live-action and CG. She experimented with a paint process using Scotchlite powder applied to fabric, allowing the ghost costumes to glow as if the actors were lit from within, and saving the production from using expensive CG effects. The film also allowed her to demonstrate her exquisite tailoring and eye for detail, evidenced by the extraordinary costumes for stars Eddie Murphy, Terrance Stamp, and Wally Shawn. In the film ENCHANTED, Susan Sarandon's evil Queen Narissa required a technically-challenging costume requiring a seamless transition from 2D-animation (cartoon character) to live-action (human actor) to a computer-generated rendering that morphs into a CGI dragon while retaining remnants of the original costume. For the costume, May designed a reptilian leather corset and skirt with a cape fashioned to look like wings, and during Narissa's dragon metamorphosis, the skirt's layers wrapped around like a tail and the crown transformed into horns.Aside from movie work, May is always inspired to share her passion, originality and technical experience with the future designers at OTIS Parsons, FIDM and Pasadena Art Center, where she is a frequent lecturer.Born in India to European parents, May was raised in Warsaw, and later Berlin. She studied fashion in Europe, New York and Los Angeles, experiencing a global education that gave her the unique point of view she brings to her work.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#monamay #costumes #designer

It's the holiday season, which means it's time for the annual Stars Hollow Holiday pageant, and Emily's famous apple tarts. However, an urgent voicemail from Rory have Luke and Lorelai rushing to the hospital where Richard is being treated for a minor heart-related scare and Emily is rolling her eyes at Luke and Lorelai's obvious attraction for one another between bouts of yelling at defenseless nurses (shout-out to Coach Sue!). Welcome to the 15th podcast episode of this side series, the Podcast Spotlight. In this episode, we talk with Gary Tan, local comedian and host of the podcast Not Again Podcast. DISCLAIMER: This is not your typical Podcast Spotlight interview. Not Again Podcast Gary is... quite a character. Not in the sense of someone who is overtly eccentric or bizarre, but more so that he comes off as vulnerable. Too vulnerable. Almost uncomfortably so. It is a trait that he has adopted as part of his comedy routine, baring himself on stage - failures and disappointments in abundance - all in a bid to make it in the industry. And unsurprisingly, his podcast is also presented in much the same vein. Primarily, it is a conversational podcast. One where Gary brings on a guest for each episode, from musicians, comedians, to authors, and gets them to open up about their lives. In this sense, this is not your typical interview show. More than just light-hearted filler and self-promotion, the topics often delve to hard hitting areas like dealing with failure, struggling for success, and basically just trying to survive in a world that is often harsh and difficult. Often times listeners will find this style uncomfortable, if only because it forces self-reflection and honest admission. But rarely will you find Gary putting on a f ront or diverging from this convention. And in his own way he stands out by being vulnerable and being himself, as himself as he possibly muster. Personally speaking, I cannot stand for this sort of style, being a strong advocate for how the story is being conveyed as much as the what. Listening to Gary however, I will admit that I have had second thoughts about this. All things considered in the big ocean of podcasting, this may be a bold strategy, but I doubt that Gary would have it any other way. The Breakdown In this podcast spotlight, Gary introduces us to The Breakdown, an interview podcast hosted by British comedian Jamali Maddix. Truthfully speaking, there is nothing inspiring about the podcast. In terms of style and structure it is similar to any number of interview/conversational style podcasts from other comedians such as BertCast with Bert Kreischer, Unqualified by Anna Farris, or WTF by Marc Maron. The one saving feature about this particular podcast perhaps, is that it specializes within the UK comedy scene. Therefore, if you are interested in learning more about the lives and careers of British comedians such as Mo Gilligan, Tom Davis, or Stewart Lee, which we discussed for this episode, then this could be the show for you. Perhaps because of the ubiquity of shows like The Breakdown, the conversation with Gary rarely stayed on the actual podcast itself. Rather, as Gary himself is privy to from his own show, we dove into the deeper tangents: the struggles of the working world, dealing with competition and jealousy within the industry, and so on. As I've warned at the top of the page, this is not your typical podcast spotlight interview. You have been warned. Music by Pandrezz: Takin' you for a ride Special thanks to Gary Tan for taking the time to do this interview. It was quite an experience trying out the conversational style for a change and opening up more during the interview. Also, fun fact, this interview was recorded back in March, and some of the topics discussed around work foreshadows more recent episodes of the Economical Rice Podcast such as In the Pursuit of Happiness and Meaning, Purpose, and the Singapore Dream. Yeah... Just some context in case you were wondering where those episodes came from. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/economicalricepodcast/message

This sequel is a drag. Literally. Miss Congeniality II: Armed and Fabulous stars Sandra Bullock, Regina King, William Shatner, Ernie Hudson and a whole bunch of drag queens. Picking up a mere two weeks after the tumultuous events that took place at the close of Miss Congeniality, Sandra Bullock finds that returning to work at the FBI is turning out to effin' be AY-yi-YI! Her reputation and celebrity preceeds her, causing her cover to be blown which gets her partner shot. (Bullock is a fantastic moving target). After her boyfriend dumps her, Bullock's boss, (Winston from Ghostbusters), shacks her up with a gay make-up bag whisperer and she becomes the new face of the FBI. Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation shows up and kidnaps William Shatner and the Queen of Miss United States, holding them for ransom. Bullock wants back in on the investigation side of the Federal Bureau, but she has public relations, and, more tragically, a sassy black body guard to contend with before she can save her pageant pals from the evil Ron Swanson. This movie is a lazy susan of intrigue, wacky disguises and the ghastly cashing in of cred. If you want your living room to feel more like the waiting area of an intensive care unit, then put this movie on! Dave reckons this movie is worse than Smiley Face, an Anna Farris picture that we reviewed back in November of 2011. It used to be our worst pick ever, but now Dave is willing to let it go with love. Noah wears his crying bra.

After that its an interview with Garry Chalk, the voice of He-Man, talking about all his years in the business as a voice actor! Finally we close out the show with a look at Dragonball.a href="http://www.movieset.com/observe-and-report">First off we check out Observe and Report starring Seth Rogen. At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist, combating skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun. His delusions of grandeur are put to the test when the mall is struck by a flasher. Driven to protect and serve the mall and its patrons, Ronnie seizes the opportunity to showcase his under-appreciated law enforcement talents on a grand scale, hoping his solution of this crime will earn a coveted spot at the police academy and the heart of his elusive dream girl Brandi.
