Vroom! I'm here on another solo adventure to talk about one of my foundational films, Gone in 60 Seconds. For me this movie had it all. An incredible cast, LA streets, and the CARS!For this episode I talk about my own history with loving cars, Angelina Jolie as Sway being the blueprint, and why Nic Cage will always reign supreme.Off-topic rants: my thoughts on the recent Crow trailer, comparisons to The Fast and The Furious, nu-metal and the importance of a driving soundtrack
Alex & Brayden got sent to the preview screening of Madame Web when we normally record the show last week. It has taken a full week of recovery time and now they share their thoughts on Sony's latest Morb-sterpiece. My holiday gift to you is the early upload of what is easily one of the five funniest episodes of Watch With Jen that I've released so far. Joining me for another chat-a-thon is one of my wisest & wittiest besties, Priscilla Page, who tackles the legendary, iconoclastic 20th-century filmmaker John Frankenheimer with me in her rollicking, rowdy, & incredibly articulate return. Needing to check that explicit language box almost immediately, as one does with Frankenheimer, we celebrate the man, the mythos, & the master of automotive action in the films GRAND PRIX & RONIN. Going on a few memorable tangents about Steve McQueen, James Garner, zen & the art of racecar driving, David Mamet, Robert De Niro, & how obsession with continuity is stupid, this episode serves up plenty of laughter & stories, though none are greater than the ones shared in the last section of the podcast by two of my other awesome friends. My wonderful honorary kid brother from Oz - Mr. Blake Howard - hooked me up with some amazing audio he recorded in 2021 with incredible actor & dear friend Donal Logue where Donal shared some heartfelt & hilarious memories of working with Frankenheimer on the holiday actioner REINDEER GAMES. (I'd heard a couple of these from Donal in the past & they're the best!) Originally released by Blake Howard in his One Heat Minute Productions pod spinoff "Rum & Rant" which has since been dubbed "Roast & Rant," I'm thrilled to include these stories with you at the tail end of the episode as a way to honor the late great John Frankenheimer's legacy. The best way to de-stress as you prep for the holidays, cinephiles will adore this one. It's a true pleasure to highlight gifted pals on the podcast, particularly as we begin to wrap up 2023, & Watch With Jen will return once more in December with a final S4 episode featuring the awesome Sean Burns on Robert Altman. Additionally, our spinoff pod MIDNIGHT RUN-THROUGH, co-hosted by Blake Howard, is premiering shortly & you'll also find it here, so get psyched!Priscilla's Bio: One of the brightest & most popular lights of Film Twitter, Priscilla Page writes about cars, movies, and cars in movies, focusing mostly on your dad's favorites: actioners, thrillers, westerns, etc. Her bylines include Hagerty, Autoweek, Empire Magazine, The Guardian, Polygon, Birth.Movies.Death., and Bright Wall/Dark Room. This week, I was honored to bring one of my dearest friends & fellow "Brunette Dad with Bangs" aboard Watch With Jen for her first-ever podcast appearance. A long-in-the-works collaboration that Priscilla Page & I began planning in the summer of '22, the very first time we hung out as we cruised around to chat & see the lights of L.A. on a summer night, it's only fitting that we made her debut a hangout episode about cars.More leisurely paced than your typical release, at the start of our discussion, I ask Priscilla about her background as a writer & the date in her twenties that made her first fall in love with cars. Soon, however, we shift our focus to two films & chase scenes starring Tom Cruise that she's written about & adores in writer-director Christopher McQuarrie's JACK REACHER & MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING.Part 1 of a two-part episode focusing on two filmmakers who've crafted some of the most delightful car sequences in American film, you'll hear us tackle director John Frankenheimer's GRAND PRIX & RONIN next. The perfect accompaniment to your holiday travel & a terrific way to begin to close out this season of the podcast, I'm so delighted to introduce you to one of my favorite people beyond the staggeringly great film essays that she's penned over the years in this wonderful conversation. (Note: You won't have to wait very long for Part 2; it will be dropping earlier than usual as my holiday gift to you.)Bio: One of the brightest & most popular lights of Film Twitter, Priscilla Page writes about cars, movies, and cars in movies, focusing mostly on your dad's favorites: actioners, thrillers, westerns, etc. Her bylines include Hagerty, Autoweek, Empire Magazine, The Guardian, Polygon, Birth.Movies.Death., and Bright Wall/Dark Room. Jill shared a number of ice-driving tips, as reinforced for her by a visit to the Jaguar and Land Rover Ice Academy. Presented with Holley! Christmas is over and it's time to look forward to spring break. How about April 28-30 in Las Vegas at Holley LS Fest West?? If an LS based (or current generation LT V8) engine is powering your ride or if you are considering a swap to LS power, this is your event! Race cars, street rods, muscle cars, trucks, late models, drift cars, prerunners, Ultra 4 buggies – you name it, if it is powered by an LS/LT there will be something here for you! Just visit Holley.com to peruse and view for yourself and be SURE to tell them that we sent you! Tom Wopat is here! With our man Corndog gone this week (to do "parenting" stuff) we knew we had to do something big....so we replaced him with Dukes of Hazzard legend Tom Wopat! Well....actually, we after last week's show we realized that, like Corndog, Tom's favorite seasons of the Dukes dated back to Season 1 as well for most of the same reasons. So, it seemed only fitting to replay his one and only appearance on our show from 2019 (Episode 102). Tom went from being a farm-kid in Wisconsin dreaming of playing for the Green Bay Packers, to being a lead on Broadway, becoming Luke Duke, and back to Broadway. There's something for everyone in here – and plenty of Dukes insight as well! National Parts Depot Presents: Bernie on the News: Also in this episode....the good people at National Parts Depot have to decided 2023 is the year to present the Award Winning Newsman Bernie McPartland in his (self-proclaimed) award winning news segment, Bernie On the News. As most of you know, NPD is the title sponsor of The MuscleCar Place Podcast and has been since 2011. Their immense support of TMCP as a show (and as a company) can't be overshadowed. And now, the fact that they are presenting Bern in the drivers seat for the world to hear....is somewhat humbling. And by humbling, we mean frightening, terrifying, sickening, etc. Welcome, NPD (and Bern, don't screw this up)! Patreon Peeps, the year 20232 will be an important one for Patreon specifically, and if you'd consider jumping up to the $5 level it would sure help. The $10 level will remain and we now have a brand new $20 level as well! All members who join at that level will receive a sticker swag pack in the mail, you'll be IMMEDIATELY entered in the monthly prize grab, and you'll receive a phone call from one (or all) of us to chat up whatever you want for 30 minutes! Honda released more information on the Civic Type R, including horsepower. Dodge announced its second "Last Call" model as the Charger Super Bee. Ford is planning a special event for Mustang owners leading up to the big next-gen debut in Detroit. And we talk about cool car movies to watch over Labor Day weekend.
NSFW: Crude jokes and language (except one of Mike's F-bombs are bleeped out for some reason. Why? Because I am mediocre.) This episode is so chrome. Its so shiny. Actually, it ain't shiny at all. Vito is under the weather, Jesse is sick as well, Dan's library ran out of wifi, and Mike read the word "Imperator" wrong. Its a strange episode and I love it. We have an amazing discussion about this insane action movie that is one of the most entertaining movies of all time. We hope you enjoy the finale to the Cars Series! Is this a dad movie though? Or is it just mediocre? Also, please check out Sirr's Furniture! He produces some amazing pieces of woodworking and we can personally vouch for the quality of his work. The third and perhaps most surprising installment in our CARS series (as in movies WITH cars, not the Cars movies) is Speed Racer! If you have seen this movie then you will understand when we warn you this episode is fast, exciting, and a little all over the place. We grapple with our opinions - is this art for art's sake? Who was the intended audience for this movie? Was there an intended audience for this movie? And that is just during lap one. Please buckle up and join us for this fun and exciting conversation. We promise if things crash and burn, the worst that can happen is you will bounce away in a soft cushy bubble. GO SPEED GO!!!! Also, please check out Sirr's Furniture! Next up for our CAR MOVIES that absolute unequivocal category of dad movies we have the carsiest one of them all, CARS! If you've seen this movie, you know what it's about. If you haven't (weird) I'll give you three guesses. Jesse and Mike were BOTH out this week as they apparently don't have what it takes but fortunately we are rejoined this week by our very own Mr. Speed himself: Sirr! from Sirr's Furniture and My Movie Fix Podcast. Is there anything more "dad" than a car? Or a bus? Or Freeways? No there is not. We are tackling some of our favorite tire-squealin' movies. The rubber really meets the asphalt in this series! (heh) Today we are talkin' Speed! The Keanu Reeves classic of not trying to hit everything on the road. We get into some arguments in this one. Namely about freeways. (seriously though, how does NO-ONE know that the freeway isn't finished?) We talk about the good ol' 90s movie days, back when you could sit your butt down and just enjoy bad guys bein' bad and good guys bein' good. This is a really fun episodes and we hope you enjoy it! Fifty years ago, automotive journalist Brock Yates and Car and Driver editor Steve Smith conceived the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, a timed race from East Coast to West Coast of America. The first “Cannonball Run” from New York City to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, California, was covered in a widely-read article, and the race was run four more times throughout the ‘70s. By the end of the decade, a movie was in the works, to be written by Yates and helmed by stuntdriver-turned-director Hal Needham. Two 1976 films - Cannonball and The Gumball Rally - beat Yates' and Needham's film to the screen, but their 1981 film - which boasted Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Farrah Fawcett leading a stacked cast - became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year and remains an enduring classic. Now, forty years later, we're putting pedal to metal and checking out The Cannonball Run! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''.
