Happy Chinese New Year! This week, while I'm decompressing from 10 days in the Alps, my friends at the Asia Society of Switzerland have graciously offered to let me share a podcast recorded just after the U.S. presidential election in November at their annual State of Asia event. "The State of China" features three terrific guests: Wang Qing (王卿), the host of the popular Chinese podcast "The Weirdo" (不合时宜), Zichen Wang of the Center for China and Globalization, and Adam Tooze, one of the truly great public intellectuals of our time. It's all skillfully moderated by the South China Morning Post's Europe editor, Finbarr Bermingham, and it covers a lot of ground. I'll be back next week in conversation with my dear friend Jeremy Goldkorn, and we'll be asking (and answering) the big question — Are we in the middle of a narrative shift on China?May the Year of the Snake be prosperous and full of happiness and success for all you Sinica listeners!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A belated and hopefully auspicious Happy Chinese New Year! We're sorry to have been away for so long. This was recorded December 30, but then there were virii and work commitments and Buddy ate our show notes… we're sorry and feel really grateful anyone misses us. In this episode we share yet another brilliant money making idea (MMI™), we discuss how our Christmas celebrations went, and we get to talk about a couple of Tales from the Shuttle (PJ did a month back at the old job over Christmas). RJ has podcast and movie notes and KJ has a Christmas movie. That he's in! Very exciting. And, as you might guess from this episode's art, we sample some doughnuts, which requires us to issue a misophonia alert! (Also known as newjerseydetectivophobia). Simon Alexander Ong grew up often feeling like he didn't fit in. Which is weird when you look at his CV: He graduated from LSE before going to work at Lehman Brothers (until it fell into administration) then a hedge fund as a junior trader. Along the way, he attended a 2-day coaching seminar that transformed the way he saw coaching and kickstarted his journey into becoming a bestselling author, international keynote speaker and business strategist. His work has seen him invited onto Sky News and BBC to be interviewed, while he has been featured in the likes of Forbes and Harvard Business Review. He has also spoken at some of the planet's most successful organisations such as Barclays, Salesforces, Adobe, EY and Microsoft. And his debut book Energize, published by Penguin in 2022 became an instant bestseller, receiving endorsements from the likes of New York Times bestselling authors Simon Sinek, Marie Forleo and Marshall Goldsmith. In 2023, Energize was also awarded Book of the Year within the Wellness & Wellbeing category at The Business Book Awards! But… how did it all begin? ❓ Why does Simon believe that the best leaders are great coaches? ❓ How did he get big names like Simon Sinek and Marie Forleo to endorse his debut book? ❓ How has he built his coaching business?❓ What gave him the confidence to take The Leap? ❓ What's been the real game changer for his business?❓ And why does he advise people to not wait because life has already begun? To find out, you'll just have to listen to Simon's episode on the So This Is My Why podcast.

A math whiz from a young age, Chiang caught the attention of a teacher who encouraged him to apply to prestigious undergrad programs. Computer science was just beginning to take off when Chiang began at MIT, and he eventually migrated from math into computing. He worked at IBM over several summers, researching automatic programming (or early AI), earning both money and MIT credits. Through his work at IBM, he received his master's degree as part of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science's 6-A program. Finishing his studies at the dawn of the personal computer, Chiang resisted the call of Silicon Valley heeded by many of his peers. Instead, he stayed on the East Coast and joined a startup, founded by a fellow MIT alum, that focused on transactional computing in finance, designing systems to be crash resistant. He moved on to working on crash resistance at AT&T Bell Labs before starting a company called Intellimed, an early pioneer in electronic medical records. After selling the company, he worked as an independent consultant on projects in health care and finance.  Chiang had already met his future wife at MIT when she performed for the Chinese Student Club in a dance troupe visiting from Taiwan. (Chen was the troupe's lead dancer; Chiang was the club's president.) The two stayed in touch, and Chen eventually emigrated to the US to attend New York University. They married in 1982, and Chen started her namesake company six years later. By the time Chiang decided to step away from consulting and dedicate himself full time to the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, he had also served on a panel evaluating grants for the NEA and on the board of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.  Find out more https://www.nainichen.org/company Follow on Instagram @nainichendancecompany Please leave us review about our podcast Follow Joanne Carey on Instagram @westfieldschoolofdance And follow  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey wherever you listen to your podcasts. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality Our YouTube Channel was just zapped—15 years of peace, love, bonobos, art, music, history and sex education—erased by Alphabet bots with all the humanity of the letters #AI which might stand for “Artificial Intelligence,” but in reality, it's Artificial Ignorance. So suddenly, without warning, Pr. Maximillian Lobkowicz #Filangieri's & My video memories of a decade and a half were destroyed, our voices silenced, #ballgagged, #muzzled like a dog, banished from the YouTube commons, the public square of modern human discourse. We're in shock but not surprised, as #censorship is on the march throughout social media (YT zapped Abby Martin's wonderful RT videos a few months ago), having long muzzled Mainstream Media, and though we are bloodied by YouTube owner Google's #evil attack, we are unbowed. Yes “evil” - Google's now-discarded “Don't Be Evil” motto was just lipstick on a greedy pig. Is there a chance of resurrection? Not being billionaires or big celebrities, not likely, but we spend a portion of this #podcast trying to properly pronounce YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki's name as we beseech her to take a look at our channel and into her heart and “do the right thing”. Weirdly, the one-word reason given us for our summary execution is #harassment not saying whom or what we allegedly “harassed,” let alone allowing us to face our accuser in any kind of court—but simply dumb-bot droning our 15-year-old channel, condemned without trial to “permanent” death.  Fortunately, WE are not dead, and we vow to keep fighting for #FreeSpeech and all of our sexy, lefty, pro-bonobo causes, wherever and whenever we can, with a song in our hearts, laughter on our lips and a little excitement in our undies. Speaking of life and death, we say RIP to Tortuguita, the peaceful environmental activist shot dead by police in Atlanta's Cop City. We also shout-out Mae West who was often censored in her times help newly single Samantha, aka “Posh Proletariat Spice,” with dating advice, and Wally calls in to sympathize with our #YouTubeCensorship woes, which weigh so heavy we forget to say Happy Chinese New Year. It's the Year of the Rabbit so let's hop on the Motorbunny and do our best to break through the tightening muzzle of censorship in 2023. This is our 2022 Lunar New Year special edition. We hope you enjoy this episode and Happy New Year!Every year around late January or early February, people all over the world celebrate the Lunar New Year according to the traditional lunisolar calendar. As for the United States, in the 1950th, grand celebrations and American style parades in San Francisco Chinatown brought the concept of the Chinese New Year to the general American public, first to fight against racism and to show loyalty to the United States during the Cold War, as well as to boost Chinatown tourism business, although reinforcing the modal minority myth as well as other racial stereotypes , these public displays of Americanness during Chinese New Years celebrations contributed to a unique identity forward for Chinese Americans as well as for Chinatowns all around North America. Then, in the 1970s, American presidents started wishing the public "Happy Chinese New Year". In the 1980s and 90s, we see the transition from "Chinese New Year" to "Lunar New Year", we see an Asian American and AAPI identity emerging. Throughout these historical changes, much like the "War on Christmas", for a Chinese celebrity or an international institution, to say "Happy Chinese New Year" or "Happy Lunar New Year" can be seen as a political stance. Was there really a war on Chinese New Year? Or, should we all fight for the Lunar New Year in observance of solidarity as well as intersectionality in today's America as well as the world?
