Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Jennifer Dulski, CEO & Founder of Rising Team, a team performance platform that has raised $11 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Early Career at Yahoo and Facebook: Jennifer's early roles at Yahoo and Facebook gave her first-hand experience in high-growth tech environments. She highlighted the importance of building strong professional networks and working with passionate, talented teams that don't require external motivation to maintain a sense of urgency. Rising Team's Platform for Team Performance: Rising Team is a platform designed to help leaders build more connected, high-performing teams. It provides a combination of DIY interactive workshops and AI-powered personalized coaching, allowing teams to run sessions without the need for expensive external facilitators. Founded During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Although Jennifer conceived the idea for Rising Team before COVID-19, the pandemic accelerated the demand for tools that foster team connection in remote work settings. The platform's value became even more apparent as companies struggled to maintain engagement with dispersed teams. Evolution from 1:1 Manager Tools to Team Workshops: The original version of Rising Team was designed for one-on-one coaching between managers and employees, but the product evolved to focus on team-wide workshops. This shift helped managers save time and meet the growing demand for deeper team connections, especially in remote and hybrid environments. Defining a New Market Category: Rising Team is positioned in a new category called "team performance platform," blending elements from learning management, team building, and engagement tools. This strategic positioning allows the company to stand out from competitors in more established categories. Importance of Data-Driven Pilots for Growth: Jennifer stressed the value of well-structured pilots that involve enough users and run for a long enough period to generate meaningful data. This approach helps demonstrate clear ROI to clients and supports long-term relationships with larger companies.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co

While AI excels in various tasks, leaders must focus on what AI can't do: foster empathy, deep trust, and connection with their teams. Leaders don't need to be tech-savvy to leverage AI; they just need to be trained on prompting. AI's ability to suggest alternatives by considering a vast amount of data can be invaluable in decision-making.  While AI may replace some jobs, it will also create new opportunities in the workplace.  Leaders must embrace AI now to stay competitive in a rapidly changing business landscape.   A QUICK GLIMPSE INTO OUR PODCAST

Thought leaders are often torn between scale and depth.Scale allows you to reach a large audience, while depth allows you to have massive impact. So, where's the happy medium? Today's guest is Jennifer Dulski, the CEO and founder at Rising Team which blends experience and science to help leaders ensure people on their teams feel valued, motivated, and connected.  In addition, she is the bestselling author of “Purposeful: Are You A Manager or A Movement Starter?” The book provides invaluable resources for leaders who want to step up and make a difference. Jennifer has had a number of roles in her career from entrepreneur for a non-profit start-up, high school teacher, and executive leadership roles at Facebook, Google, and Yahoo.  We learn how all of these roles have given her the experience to take her passion for creating a happy and successful high-performing team to scale using technology. Often thought leaders believe they have to stick to a single domain, but Jennifer shares how her varied career has allowed her to adjust, grow, and change her domain expertise over time as her own experience has developed through both success and mistakes in the field. Our conversation wraps up by discussing putting content into various modalities and how using LinkedIn, being an educator, and writing a book all play together.  Jennifer explains how the book and book talks helped to tighten up her content and give her credibility while bite-sized portions of that content go out on LinkedIn to have larger engagements with her audience. Jennifer shares useful information on taking ideas to scale and leveraging a book to create a deep impact on your audience. Three Key Takeaways: ·         You don't have to be a thought leader in only one domain.  You can grow your thought leadership in multiple domains as your experience grows. ·         Having successes and mistakes are both part of the thought leadership journey. ·         A book can help you solidify your ideas and present them in the clearest way, which you can then build additional product offerings.

We talk about the source of her power and inspiration (her strong parents and the people and stories that she witnessed while growing up) and her take on how leadership has evolved in our current times.   Time stamps: 00:46- Introducing Jennifer Dulski;01:45- Growing up in San Francisco in the 80s and getting exposure to different people and experiences have impacted her view of the world and became the inspiration for her later work;07:55- College life, becoming National Champion as a Coxswain on the Women's Crew Team, and the start and motivation behind her career;12:28- Her time at Yahoo, building her startup and after failing three times, managing to sell it to Google;19:49- Making a difference- getting involved in the Change.org Foundation;23:59- Creating Rising Team (a company that empowers managers to build more engaged, connected and successful teams) and her take on how “leadership” has evolved in current times;30:01- Factors that lead to high-performing teams and high engaging employees (psychological safety, guiding people to understand and work towards their natural talents and making them feel appreciated);36:28- Learning how to be a movement starter and transform your work relations- her book “Purposeful”.  Quotes “I feel like growing up in San Francisco gave me what I call exposure privilege, you know being able to see and experience a lot of different things and backgrounds, and people. I also grew up in the 80s, in the AIDS crisis in San Francisco, which was really a pretty big part of my childhood (...).” “ I have this mantra I use in my life, which is “Every person is a teacher, every experience is a lesson.” You can look all around you and just see those lessons everywhere, and in fact,(...) the most popular piece that I wrote on Linkedin is a piece I wrote about my dad. It's called “Don't Work With Jerks- Five lessons I learned from my dad.” “ My mom was a multi-time cancer survivor and in her late 20s, she had surgery that ended up paralyzing half of her face. Imagine a woman in the 70s whose not even quite 5 feet tall with half her face paralyzed, trying to get into a new career, and she did it, after like 50 interviews she ended up getting a job as a  compensation consultant and had a super successful career after that (...). As a female founder in tech, there are days that feel like that for me too.” “ The reason why I got into tech was because I loved making an impact, I could see it in the kids that were coming through this program that we were making an impact and at the same time, the scale was going to be very linear, I could raise twice as much money and we could serve just about twice the students and at this time it was the dawning of the internet and I just saw it and I thought, this is where the scale of impact is, I have to get into tech cause this is how you reach more people.” “Just so people don't only hear like the pretty, fancy side of selling a startup, that company probably failed at least three times before we succeeded. I sometimes call myself too stubborn to fail because I think a lot of people would have just gone home.” ______________________________ Get in contact with Jennifer: Rising Team WebsiteLinkedinTwitterFacebookHer book- Purposeful ______________________________  Mentions: AIDS crisisTop Gun: MaverickYahooFacebookGoogle Change.org a worldwide petition website, based in California, US, operated by the San Francisco-based company of the same name, which has over 400 million usersand offers the public the ability to promote the petitions they care about to potential signers, including 196 countries which are "creating change" in their communities. More info on Change.org: WebsiteTwitterFacebookWikipedia __________________________  Follow Jake: WebsiteInstagramLinkedInTwitter

She shared how Virgin America enlisted the help of their customers to petition for a new runway for them! The morale of the story is to listen to your customers and learn how to engage them in a way that serves you brand and your customers. She also shared the unusual community Starbucks has called “The Leaf Rakers Society”, a group of people who are enthusiastic about fall. Jen showed it's a great example of a company just supports and isn't overbearing which allows people to build a surprisingly deep connection. If you're building a community, you can consider using this to create a community associated with your brand that will create a richer connection than a help forum.During her time at Facebook they conducted a survey and found that communities with a true, deep connection usually contain 3 things. The first was intentional time in that group, actively engaging with posts (not just lurking) and being connected with one another. If you're able to build a community the specifically goes to your group and not only engages but become friends with others in the group chances you will have a very dedicated community!

Karen Finocchio Karen Finocchio: My name is Karen and I am here for you. In fact, the whole OTM Army is here for you. Directly out of high school at age 19, I married a military man and by age 28, I had four children and a toxic marriage. At 30, I decided to leave my extremely unhealthy marriage to become a single mother. With no education, I took any job I could get, as a waitress, a bartender, a mail delivery person, a bank, to eventually sell and voice radio commercials. Denied food stamps and struggling financially to provide for my children, I met an earth angel who told me about a government program for single mothers. The program allowed low-income women to buy a house, with no money down and no interest. So, against negative opinions, disbelievers, all self-doubt, and fear of failure; I did it, by myself, as a single mother, we bought our home. While my children grew, I focused on my career. I learned everything I could, especially about advertising and marketing. Within years, I opened my own in-house agency, allowing me to work with the WWF/WWE, NASCAR, The Grammys, Sharon and Ozzy Osborn, as well as cast members from The Sopranos and the Jersey Shore show. Learning from others, I wrote and produced national radio and tv commercials which aired on NBC, CBS, FOX and every network in-between. However, as my career and column flourished, I faced some very tough times. Two failed marriages and a devastating suicide by someone I loved, left me questioning my purpose in life. In 2012, on the advice of my children, I started the One Tough Muther (#OTM) advice column. A web critic critiqued me as “Dear Abby on steroids” due to my tough love answers and my column skyrocketed. To date, I’ve been published in magazines, interviewed on radio shows, on podcasts and TV shows. In August of this year, The One Tough Muther Show hit the market. Premiering on CBS Radio with co-hosts, Tough Muther and Tough Brother Seth, we aim to inspire women at any stage in life, to believe in themselves with self-confidence, building self-esteem and courage. Our goal is to help women realize, that the only person that must truly believe in you, is YOU. able guests include: Gloria Allred, Kara Goldin, Melinda Wittstock, Joy Altimare, Erin Cole, Dr. Lillian Glass, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Tracy “JackieO” Latourette, Polo Tate, Taylor Daynes, Dr. Anna Lee Fisher, and Jennifer Dulski. Compellingly honest, inspiring, educational, emotional, and at times edgy, One Tough Muther, Tough Brother Seth, and their guests will stop at nothing to help guide and empower women. Remember, you don’t have to be a Mother, to be One Tough Mother. It’s all about U!

How do you want your world to look? If there’s something you could change about your world–less homelessness, more gay rights, more organic food options in your neighborhood–whatever it may be, are you willing to do the hard work it takes to change it? REALLY change it? Jennifer Dulski, head of groups and community at Facebook, shares her experienced insight and incredible stories to becoming a movement starter. Jennifer leads Facebook Groups, a product central to the new Facebook mission to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. As an accomplished leader and entrepreneur, Jennifer has more than 18 years of experience in both successful startups and big brand internet companies, including even being the former head of change.org. She has a deep passion for making the world a better place, and her new book Purposeful: Are You a Manager or a Movement Starter? is a rousing guide combining her own experience with stories of other inspiring leaders to show how we all have the power to start movements that matter. Get ready to start a revolution and move a bigger purpose forward, today! Key takeaways: Meeting on the road. You’re just on the brink of change--making leaps, taking risks--and in the midst of everything happening you’re meeting those who want to join your cause and others who want to dole out advice. Who do you listen to and whom do you trust? Listen to THIS advice to weed out your internal suspicions…[11:40]. Starting a revolution. There’s something you want to see change, you want to help grow and make better, but there’s this wave of self-doubt that says this is a role for bigger people who are more connected. False! This is YOUR role, YOUR mission. The ONE question you need to ask yourself before you start is this…[15:33]. Expanding the team. It’s easy to gain support from your closest friends. They listen to your troubles, cheer your accomplishments, lend a helping hand when needed, but what about a stranger? How can you enlist an outsider to follow your cause and embark on the journey? Follow these THREE tactics to grow your team…[22:32]. Fueling the mission. You’ve got the team, you know the mission inside and out, and time goes on and on without any real achievement. It’s far too easy to feel defeated and get derailed. How do you keep your fiery force alive over time? Remember THIS…[28:48]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality.

Managers accept the world as it is; movement starters push the boundaries to make it more just, compassionate, and even joyful. We all need to decide: Are we managers or movement starters? When Mark Zuckerberg changed the mission of Facebook this summer to be focused on community, he hired Jennifer Dulski to lead Groups, at the center of their new strategy, and used by more than one billion people to build meaningful communities around the world. With a career as a tech executive at Yahoo! and Google, a startup founder and CEO, and a social change leader as president of Change.org, Dulski is now combining her own experience with stories of other inspiring leaders to show how we all have the power to start movements that matter. In her new book, PURPOSEFUL, she walks through the steps to go from idea to impact and shares specific tips and stories from real movement starters -- from students to retirees -- whose movements have created everything from new laws to new companies. Jennifer Dulski will discuss: Movements and social change: From the Women’s March to the #MeToo movement to the recent resurgence in the fight for gun control in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, people are rallying others around common purpose to achieve their goals. Women in leadership: Jennifer has long been a leading woman in tech, she led one of the six business units at Yahoo!, she co-founded and served as CEO at The Dealmap, a location-based deals service, which she sold to Google in 2011, making her the first female entrepreneur to sell a company to Google. Over 75% of the individuals featured in the book are women, including: Amanda Nguyen, the founder and president of Rise, a national civil rights nonprofit dedicated to fighting for the rights of sexual assault victims; and Kara Goldin, founder of Hint Water. Facebook movements taken offline: Surviving Hijab is a community for women to support each other around the decision to wear the hijab. The group was initially just for friends. But just two weeks after creator Manal Rostom started it, there were 40,000 members in the group and it has now grown to nearly 500,000. The group's members encourage each other to be active and proud of their hijab. The group has influenced Nike to create its first Pro Hijab, which TIME recently named as one of the best inventions of 2017. Business practices: The most effective leaders are those that see themselves as movement starters, not only activists, but also entrepreneurs and business people. Jennifer shares tips for leaders in business on how to respond to pressure from changemakers -- whether it be your consumers or public sentiment. In a time when our world needs change more than ever, Dulski shows how each of us can learn the leadership skills necessary to rally people around common propose, whether we are activists or entrepreneurs. About the author: Jennifer Dulski is the head of Facebook Groups and Community. She also has more than 15 years' experience in successful startups and big-brand internet companies, including Yahoo! and The Dealmap, which was acquired by Google in 2011, and was most recently president and COO of Change.org. Dulski writes about leadership, management and entrepreneurship for LinkedIn Influencers, Fortune, Huffington Post and other media outlets.
