Anna & The Apocalypse is a hybrid Christmas/zombie/musical/comedy film released in 2017, directed by John McPhail, and the final screenplay posthumously released by Ryan McHenry. Set in a small town in Scotland, it follows several impending graduating students who find themselves embroiled in an unfolding zombie apocalypse on the cusp of Christmas break. The titular Anna finds herself at an emotional crossroads in her life as the events of zombie infestation unfurl around her and her friends. Heavily featuring themes of emotional growth and smalltown languishing, the film starred Ella Hunt in the titular role, as well as Mark Benton, Paul Kaye, Marli Siu, and various others, with a soundtrack provided by Scottish songwriters Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly. On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome HIAM all-star Christopher Brown back to the guest chair as they discuss zombie tropes, UK confections, and Lilz misses her goddamn cue on a recurring bit. (She had one freaking job.)...with Lilz and Scott!
We're tired of pretending that there's no such thing as a Rom Com Zom Musical! The time has finally come to discuss John McPhail's Anna and the Apocalypse (2017), which has charming Scottish actors, a Canadian choreographer, and three (?!) different versions. It's directed by John McPhail and it stars Ella Hunt, Malcolm Cumming, Christopher Leveaux, Marli Siu, Mark Benton, Paul Kaye, and the podcast's new girlfriend Sarah Swire and new boyfriend Ben Wiggins. This movie has us co-sleeping in ballpits, fantasizing about power throuples, and examining the effects of toxic masculinity on how we deal with apocalypses and friendships. We also talk extensively about Sarah Swire's portrayal of Steph North and how rare it is to have a non-sexualized queer woman with social anxiety, a warm winter wardrobe, and a hatchback in a horror movie, despite the fact that that describes a quarter of our friend group. Award winning director John McPhail is building his dream James Bond film this week. With plenty of experience making films himself, John is the perfect guest to talk us through his picks for Bond, the co-star, the villain, who directs the film and who performs the theme song. As someone who has recently directed a Christmas-zombie-musical-drama-comedy its difficult to guess which direction John will take his film, and there are certainly plenty of surprises as he builds his Bond… We also hear loads of behind-the-scenes stories from the making of Anna and the Apocalypse, including a brilliant 007 reference within the film that unfortunately didn't make the final cut. Put on your finest Christmas duds and warm up those pipes of yours because we’ve got a comedy horror… musical in store for you? Wait wait. This one is a comedy and a horror and a musical? All in one movie? You bet your butt it is! For our latest B-movie bonus episode, we watched the gruesome and hilarious John McPhail film, Anna and the Apocalypse. So it’s Christmas time in the U.K. and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a zombie apocalypse on. Just everyone’s luck, right? You’re about to finish up high school, you’ve got big plans to travel the world, and then everyone starts turning up dead! Or rather, undead. This is exactly the predicament Anna Shepherd finds herself in. Dang it, she just wants to start living the life she wants to live already! She wants it so bad that she’s singing it out loud. In fact, everyone’s singing in this one. It is a musical after all. But what’s to be done when zombies start taking over and eating everyone? Well, as the age-old wisdom goes, you start bashing in some zombie brains if you want to make it out alive. If you’ve still got a song in your heart, well then you’d better belt it out, as well. You never know how many of those opportunities you’ll have before you end up dead. Damn! I mean undead. Undead! Sheesh. You’d think I’d never seen a comedy horror musical about a zombie apocalypse before now or something. When it comes to our monthly B-movie episodes, there’s only one question we’re trying to answer by the end: is this movie brilliant or a blunder? We’ll leave it to you to listen to the episode to find out. NHE host Scott Murphy chats to director John McPhail about his latest film, the cult smash “Anna and the Apocalypse.” A zom-rom-com-Xmas-musical that is already establishing itself as a seasonal favourite since it was released back in 2018. In the interview (the interview begins at 2:02), we talk to John about the film’s ever-growing success, […]
Our next film in the high school genre is the 1996 horror/comedy/supernatural drama THE CRAFT. After some largely positive reviews, we talk about how this is ultimately a film about knowing your place, while also being a feminist revenge fantasy, and also discuss the way in which this film exists at the confluence of supernatural battles and teenage toxicity. ‘Twas the season 10 finale of Gobbledygeek, when all through the podcast, Zombies were shuffling, Scottish dancers aghast. John McPhail’s Anna and the Apocalypse was the topic du jour, In hopes that Paul and Arlo would discuss the songs, the jokes, and maybe some more. The movie does not foster too much discussion, alas; While instead, talking about Christmas plans and getting high, our hosts have a blast. Join us as we talk about the making of ANNA, our favorite holiday horror films, and John's movie pick, 1979's THE VISITOR. You know, standard Christmas stuff. This is the last episode of the year, so come join the Podforsaken one last time this decade. Happy Holidays and we'll see you again in January 2020!!! It took Brás de Oliva Domingos so long to find out, and he found out. What, if anything, he found out is the central question of Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá’s 2010 Vertigo series Daytripper, subject of our final Four-Color Flashback for 2019. You see, Brás writes obituaries for a São Paulo newspaper--and at the end of most chapters in this book, he dies. Twin writers/artists Moon and Bá pave the way for an existential journey along the many turning points of a life, from the imperceptible to the unmistakable. Paul and Arlo discuss Daytripper’s hint of magical realism; the coherent, airtight structure that grounds the book’s absurdity; how the series’ hopeful attitude brushes up against horrific tragedy; Moon and Bá’s distinctive (though not so distinctive we know who is penciling and/or inking what!) art style, accentuated by master colorist Dave Stewart; and more. Next: on the Gobbledygeek season 10 finale, Christmas gets twisted with John McPhail’s 2018 horror-comedy-musical Anna and the Apocalypse. Christmas is almost upon us so Kneel Before Pod decided to commemorate the festive season by discussing a newcomer to the Christmas movie market. John McPhail's Anna and the Apocalypse is unique in that it's a Christmas film that also features a Zombie Apocalypse as well as a fair amount of singing. Sufficed to say, the team absolutely loved it so got together to talk about it in the usual detail. They praise the characterisation of Anna, Ella Hunt's performance and how well all the elements blend together to make for what amounts to a wholly satisfying experience. Bringing an end to our Halloween mini-series which began with Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (or with Halloween: H20, maybe?) we are joined IN PERSON for Episode 28 by the director of the festival-crushing Christmas zombie musical, Anna and the Apocalypse, John McPhail, as we discuss the oft maligned black sheep of the Halloween franchise... His chosen film? Halloween III: Season of the Witch! With Michael Myers dead at the end of Halloween 2, John Carpenter felt that the Myers/Strode storyline had run its course. However, the franchise was believed to still have some steam in it and the decision was reached to press ahead with the third instalment with a view to making a yearly Halloween film, each with a different story. How did this work out? Not well. The film tanked. It was a commercial and critical failure and the decision was reversed. The fans wanted Michael Myers and that's what they got going forward. That said, there's an awful lot to love in Halloween III: Season of the Witch... The synopsis is as follows: Hospital emergency room Dr. Daniel "Dan" Challis and Ellie Grimbridge, the daughter of a murder victim, uncover a terrible plot by small-town mask maker Conal Cochran, a madman who's planning a Halloween mass murder utilizing an ancient Celtic ritual. The ritual involves a boulder stolen from Stonehenge, the use of Silver Shamrock masks and a triggering device contained in a television commercial -- all designed to kill millions of children.
