Old Testament: Proverbs 4: 20-23 New Testament: Revelation 3:7-11 Speaker: Pastor Classy Podcast Summary: One could make a strong case that the letters to Smyrna and Philadelphia are the most important ones of the seven churches, for in neither of them do we find one word of complaint. They both receive unqualified praise and approval. These, then, are truly churches of which Christ heartily approves. In this text, we find a four-fold description of Jesus, again taken from the visionary portrait of him. First, Jesus is called The Holy One – An unmistakable title for Yahweh in the OT (Isa. 40:25) here applied to Jesus. Second, Jesus is called The True One – To the Greek mind this would mean “genuine,” that which is real and thus corresponds to reality. To the Hebrew mind it means “faithful” and “trustworthy,” deserving of our confidence, dependable, reliable, consistent and steadfast. Third, Jesus is The One who has the Key of David – He has the undisputed authority to admit or exclude from the New Jerusalem. The idea is that Jesus has the key to the Davidic or messianic kingdom. Fourth, Jesus is The One who opens and no one else can shut – When he opens to his followers the door of the kingdom, no one can shut them out; and when he shuts the door on those who oppose his cause, no one can reverse the decision. OUR FOCUS IS ON THE LETTER TO THE CHURCH AT PHILADELPHIA (REVELATION 3:7-13)

In the second episode of our Creative Nonfiction Film podcast season, Sophie Fiennes discusses The Four Quartets and how she approaches documenting live performance on screen. In The Four Quartets, she captures the stage play of the same name, directed by and starring her brother, actor Ralph Fiennes. For the production, Ralph Fiennes adapted the T.S. Eliot poem for the stage — which was never originally intended to be performed that way — and then toured this production around the UK in 2021. Sophie Fiennes's film of The Four Quartets is neither live capture nor a full adaptation of the play. Instead, Fiennes remarkably documents the theatre production on screen, maintaining all the original lighting and blocking. Her choices of framing and camera movement really puts us in the black box theatre with Ralph Fiennes. Unlike most recorded theatre, where there is a constant sense of information loss, Sophie Fiennes gives us a sense of the theatrical space so we get a better sense of what we're missing when we're missing it. It's built into Sophie Fiennes's direction. Sophie Fiennes discusses Ralph Fiennes's production, the challenges of documenting the play on screen, and how working with Declan Donnellan of Cheek by Jowl just before she shot The Four Quartets changed how she thinks about acting and theatre. This summer marks the tenth anniversary of a landmark production for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Their 2012 Julius Caesar was Britain's first ever high-profile production of a Shakespeare play with an all-Black cast—a milestone that came 76 years after it was first done in the US and 15 years after it was first done in Canada. The production featured Paterson Joseph as Brutus, and he was so impressed by the experience that he wrote Julius Caesar and Me: Exploring Shakespeare's African Play. The book takes an unflinching look at Joseph's time at the RSC, both while working on Caesar and in the 1990s, when the son of St. Lucian parents found himself one of only four Black people in the building. He also writes about his early work, performing sharp and boldly reimagined Shakespeare with the Cheek by Jowl company; his thoughts about race in the British theater; the proper way to play Brutus; Received Pronunciation, and much more. In 2018, Joseph was at the National Black Theater in Harlem, performing his one-man show, Sancho: An Act of Remembrance, about the first Black man in England to cast a vote. We invited him into the studio to talk about the book, Brutus, and more, and we bring that conversation to you again now. Paterson Joseph is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. Paterson Joseph is an acclaimed British actor who has performed major roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, including the title role in Othello; and the leads in The Royal Hunt of the Sun and The Emperor Jones. He has also worked extensively in film, and in television, including recently The Leftovers and Timeless. In 2015, he wrote and performed his one-man play Sancho: An Act of Remembrance on tour. Julius Caesar and Me: Exploring Shakespeare's African Play was published in the US by Methuen Drama, a division of Bloomsbury Books, in 2018. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. That’s right - the Trainer to the Trainers® himself, the one and only, Mr. Tom Purvis is on the line and hanging out with the boys this week! Tom drops some serious intellectual weight on Dan, Dave and Mark (don’t worry, momentum was not a factor) and can’t resist taking them through a full circuit to build their bodies of knowledge. TTTT exercises some patience with the boys and fills them in on a few behind-the-scenes flexes and spots them for a few reps around the world of fitness informercials at large. As a special bonus, Tom sends the boys on an Easter egg hunt and plays a quick game of “Fair or Jowl.” So take the Call Now Challenge!
