My guest today is Henri Stern, CEO of Privy. Privy is an authentication and embedded wallet SDK. With Privy, dapp developers can allow their users to sign in with their existing wallet, or generate an embedded wallet associated with an email, SMS, or SSO provider such as AppleID or Gmail. Privy's embedded wallet powers friend.tech, the breakout social dapp launched in August 2023. With Privy, friend.tech generates a new embedded wallet for each user that signs in, allowing the PWA dapp to sign transactions at the click of an HTML button element — no WalletConnect back-and-forth required. Privy's 2/3 Shamir wallet option allows dapp developers to create self-custody wallets for their users, while Privy provides a password-protected recovery services in case users should lose access to their account or device. On this episode we discuss Henri's experience studying under Dan Boneh, working on Filecoin at Protocol Labs with Juan Benet, and building Privy. We explore the ins-and-outs of Privy's embedded wallet architecture and discuss what's next in wallets. It was a pleasure diving into the emerging embedded wallet and account abstraction smart wallet stack with Henri, who is a clear thinker and humble decentralization minded builder. This week on The Defiant Podcast, we speak with Juan Benet, the founder of Protocol Labs and the inventor of the InterPlanetary File System. Juan is also the creator of Filecoin, a storage network incentivized by crypto. Both of Juan's ventures are hugely ambitious as they are in direct competition with the basic rails of the internet, with protocols such as HTTP and data giants like AWS. We begin our conversation with Juan explaining what led him to start IPFS and Filecoin. Juan points out that all of the layers of the internet that run below the application layer, rely on trust. He believes that the promise of web3 is to be able to upgrade the whole stack with trust-minimized public verifiability primitives. One of the key innovations of IPFS is in data addressing, which increases the efficiency of data fetching. But there's more to IPFS than just this, and we talk about some of the other features of IPFS. Juan says universities would be a good next step to expand the user base of Filecoin since they deal with large amounts of data and run intensive computations. We go on to discuss Filecoin's plans to encourage the adoption of its technology beyond web3 users.

Conviene leerla, pues.

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a fully decentralized distributed system for storing and accessing files, websites, applications, and data. Released just over 5 years ago by Protocol Labs, it has had a tremendous impact in the Web3 space as the standard for how blockchain projects store data. Filecoin is a complementary protocol to IPFS and was recently launched on the mainnet. Filecoin is the economic layer which powers IPFS's decentralized file storage network. It enables users to store their files at hypercompetitive prices and verify that their files are being stored and replicated correctly. And it allows storage providers to sell their storage on an open market.Juan Benet is the Founder & CEO of Protocol Labs, which has had a huge impact in the blockchain ecosystem, as organisation behind IPFS and Filecoin. Juan returns to the show after 5 years to give us an important update on the long-term vision to fund innovative technologies, IPFS since it was created, and Filecoin as a foundation to a new decentralized cloud. This is a 2-part series and in the next episode we deep dive in to the technical aspects of Filecoin.Topics covered in this episode:An update on Protocol Labs and how it has grown on the Bell Labs modelHow they bridge the gap between a research foundation (Bell Labs) and a company (Protocol Labs)The intersection between computer science and cryptoHow the Protocol Labs organisation is setup and how Juan has led it as a solo founderAn overview of IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) and how it has evolved since our last interviewAn introduction to the Filecoin blockchain and its unique designHow Filecoin is fundamentally different from other layer-1 blockchainsHow hash rates and storage fees affect the Filecoin blockchain consensus systemThe potential impacts of Filecoin on a global levelEpisode links: Filecoin websiteProtocol Labs websiteIPFS websiteEpisode #100 with Juan BenetFilecoin on TwitterJuan on TwitterSponsors: cPanel: cPanel's WordPress Toolkit is the all in one solution that makes hosting your website easier than it's ever been - https://epicenter.rocks/cpanelAlgorand: Learn more about Algorand and how it’s unique design makes it easy for developers to build sophisticated applications - https://algorand.com/epicenterThis episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain & Friederike Ernst. Bitcoin, Blockchain, and the Technologies of Our Future

video: https://youtu.be/TyG3PP6WERQ LBRY: https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/ethereum-filecoin-partnership-exclusive:7?r=JBjAdauAdeysMGVDbHMJpNSQzbcMyqYg Today, ConsenSys, a large blockchain software technology company focused on the Ethereum network, announced a partnership with Protocol Labs (the creator of Filecoin) and an integration with Filecoin. You can think of Filecoin like a decentralized Airbnb for data storage. They launched on their mainnet last week, and it was one of the most anticipated launches from the 2017 ICO era. The aim of the ConsenSys/Protocol Labs collaboration is to develop the decentralized storage ecosystem and community, integrating with Ethereum at every layer of the decentralized technology stack. Joseph Lubin, Founder and CEO of ConsenSys, and Juan Benet, Founder and CEO of Protocol Labs, joined me on a panel with me to talk about the partnership. Benet describes how Filecoin’s open network will foster a more sustainable and globally accessible web infrastructure. The IPFS system he built promises both faster and cheaper retrieval of data, eliminating the need to rely on centralized servers. Filecoin now provides an economic incentive for that system. Lubin explains how the ConsenSys Product Suit hopes to provide the best view of the Filecoin storage marketplace, and make price discovery for storage on the Filecoin network simple and transparent. He also discussed the Filecoin DeFi Bridge that will enable conversion of the Filecoin (FIL) cryptocurrency to ERC-20 tokenized FIL. Once on Ethereum, FIL holders and miners can deposit their tokenized FIL as collateral in a DeFi lending market to earn interest, or borrow more FIL to stake on storage mining operations. Many Ethereum and ConsenSys apps have used IPFS for years, because decentralized storage is a critical part of the Web 3.0 architecture. This partnership is an exciting step forward for a decentralized internet. "We live in a spectacular time,” says Juan Benet. "We're a century into our computing phase transition. The latest stages have created astonishing powers for individuals, groups, and our species as a whole. We are also faced with accumulating dangers -- the capabilities to end the whole humanity experiment are growing and are ever more accessible. In light of the promethean fire that is computing, we must prevent bad outcomes and lock in good ones to build robust foundations for our knowledge, and a safe future. There is much we can do in the short-term to secure the long-term." "I come from the front lines of computing platform design to share a number of new super-powers at our disposal, some old challenges that are now soluble, and some new open problems. In this next decade, we’ll need to leverage peer-to-peer networks, crypto-economics, blockchains, Open Source, Open Services, decentralization, incentive-structure engineering, and so much more to ensure short-term safety and the long-term flourishing of humanity.” Juan Benet is the inventor of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS)---a new protocol which uses content-addressing to make the web faster, safer, and more open—and the creator of Filecoin, a cryptocurrency-incentivized storage market.

with Juan Benet and Chris Dixon The story of how innovation happens is a long one — from government funding early basic research, to the heyday of corporate R&D like Bell Labs, to startups as experiments before product-market fit. Through all that, we've ended up with “unprecedented superpowers” distributed through the internet, and people building on top of it. Yet there's still a huge lag in going from brilliant ideas in the form of research papers to an application that's actually working and in people's hands, observes computer scientist, engineer, and entrepreneur (founder and CEO of Protocol Labs) Juan Benet. Benet initially designed the peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol IPFS or “InterPlanetary File System” to help build a more robust, distributed, open web. But those ideas were around for a while — they just weren't implemented in a way that people could easily use. The same was true for early computing revolutions as well… until Apple came along and vertically integrated from research to production, bringing together different groups of people (design, hardware, etc.) to make something amazing that everyone could use, wanted to use. What if open source, online networks — enabled by blockchain and cryptocurrencies — could do something similar? [Full disclosure: we're investors in the ‘Filecoin SAFT' security mentioned in this podcast, but are not otherwise affiliated with Protocol Labs or Filecoin.] This episode of the a16z Podcast, hosted by general partner Chris Dixon, explores all of the above and more with Benet, going beyond the buzz around just “ICOs”. What's the big picture?

Juan Benet and Jesse Clayburgh of Protocol Labs, and Ryan Zurrer of Polychain Capital, discuss the Simple Agreement for Future Tokens (SAFT). Inspired by Y Combinator's “Simple Agreement for Future Equity”, the SAFT standardizes the legal framework surrounding token issuance and governs the nature of the transactions involved (i.e. the deployment of capital and distribution of tokens). The complex legal environment surrounding tokens, especially in the US, has led many entrepreneurs to choose to leave Silicon Valley because they can develop the technology better elsewhere. Those who remain in the US have had to compromise on the optimization of their models in order to comply with legacy regulatory frameworks. Recognising these limitations, and seeking to mature the ecosystem beyond such models, several interested parties (including Protocol Labs, AngelList and CoinCenter) have worked together to create standard legal agreements for this novel asset class. Essentially, a SAFT represents a promise for future tokens at a fixed price. The agreement can be structured so that investors receive these tokens when the network launches, or with inbuilt vesting to incentivise continued support by investors. The development of the SAFT model involved consultations with the SEC and CFTC, as well as the foremost legal experts at the intersection of cryptocurrencies, securities law and regulatory compliance. By simplifying token issuance and the requisite compliance concerns, it provides an essential bridging of the gap between current technological progress and future regulation. protocol.ai twitter.com/protocollabs twitter.com/juanbenet twitter.com/jesseclayburgh polychain.capital angel.co/polychain-capital twitter.com/ryanzurrer consensys.net consensysmedia.net https://itunes.apple.com//podcast/the-ether-review/id899090462?mt=2

Juan Benet and Jesse Clayburgh of Protocol Labs, and Ryan Zurrer of Polychain Capital, discuss CoinList, a platform for token-backed networks to raise money through pre-launch token sales. While planning the Filecoin token sale, the team at Protocol Labs developed a method of accreditation for US investors in order to comply with securities law. Realising the importance of such a system for the whole ecosystem, they partnered with AngelList to develop this into a platform on which other projects can host their token pre-sales. The end result, CoinList, streamlines the complicated token launch process for developers and investors alike. By supporting a wide variety of sale mechanics, contracts, and pricing schemes within a standard set of requirements, the platform allows developers to focus on optimising their projects instead of spending time on convoluted compliance processes. Its focus on simplifying due diligence reduces complications for developers while “filtering out the signal from the noise”. With the ability to clear transactions simultaneously across fiat and cryptocurrencies, and the aim of hosting high-quality and high-integrity projects, CoinList opens up the token ecosystem to an influx of capital from a range of new investors. It gives these investors visibility into the progress of a sale, a clear quality checklist for each token, and a record of their previous investments and the requisite legal agreements. The significant institutional capital still pushing into the cryptocurrency space highlights the demand for such a versatile yet user-friendly platform at this time. With its solutions to regulatory uncertainty, costly compliance and the current knowledge barrier to investing, CoinList is well-placed to bring in the era of Web 3.0 coinlist.co twitter.com/coinlist angel.co twitter.com/angellist protocol.ai twitter.com/protocollabs twitter.com/juanbenet twitter.com/jesseclayburgh polychain.capital angel.co/polychain-capital twitter.com/ryanzurrer consensys.net consensysmedia.net etherreview.info https://itunes.apple.com//podcast/the-ether-review/id899090462?mt=2

We’ve made it to episode 100! Our guest for our celebratory episode is Juan Benet, inventor of the Inter-Planetary File System and founder of Protocol Labs. IPFS is a distributed file system that seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files. The possibilities for IPFS could range from distributed cloud hosting to websites without central servers to even replacing HTTP. It’s a project as audacious as any we’ve had on the podcast and Juan did an outstanding job explaining the technology and vision. Topics covered in this episode: Why HTTP is broken and how IPFS could complement and ultimately replace it The different technologies IPFS is based on including DHT, Git, Bittorrent and SFS How IPFS could enable the ‘permanent web’ by distributing file storage Content-addressing and how hosting works on IPFS Mutable content and the Interplanetary Naming System (IPNS) Filecoin and incentivizing hosting on IPFS Why IPFS is a great fit for smart contracts How he wants to build and monetize core internet protocols with his company Protocol Labs Episode links: IPFS website IPFS whitepaper (PDF) Replication on IPFS Neocities blog post Filecoin Protocol Labs This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture.
