For this episode of the Mo’ Money Podcast, I’ve got my friend Kara Perez on the show. She is the founder of Bravely Go, a feminist financial education company. Her company focuses on bringing actionable and accessible financial education to people through pop up events and an online community. Kara is also the co-host of the award-winning The Fairer Cents podcast and if that wasn’t enough she’s also a money coach! In this episode, we talk about why there is such a need to hear diverse voices in the personal finance world so we can all learn from each other, what it means to be a financial feminist, and Kara shares her tips on how to negotiate like a pro so you can level up your money (a skill I sure wish I had back in my 20s). Kara also shares her story of graduating soon after the recession with an English degree, and living on a low income for many years while struggling to pay off her debt. By taking the time to educate herself about money and being disciplined with living below her means, she was able to crush her debt and now works full-time running her own company teaching others how to empower themselves through personal finance. Although she doesn’t like to say if she can do it so can you, hopefully her story will serve as some inspiration that no matter where you’re at in life, there’s always a path to a better financial life. Early retirement is one of those things that many people dream about and some do. My guest today is Tanja Hester. Tanja and her husband Mark Bunge were able to retire from formal employment when she was 38, and he was 41. Tanja is now able to devote her life to fun and purpose. She is the author of Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny-Pinching Way. Tanja and Mark have an award-winning financial independence blog called Our Next Life. Tanja also podcasts on The Fairer Cents Podcast with her friend Kara Perez where they explore marginalized and tricky financial topics. Her new found freedom also allows her to focus on interests like gathering women together to talk about financial independence at Cents Positive retreats and volunteering in her community. She’s also able to indulge her love of traveling the world, and enjoy sports like skiing, hiking, biking, paddling, and climbing around her home in North Lake Tahoe, California. She is basically living the dream. On today’s show, we talk about how she and her husband tracked their progress and timed their leaving work and how they downsized their lifestyle to retire early. Tanja has researched and explored every aspect of early retirement from the best strategies for saving to redefining your identity without a career. She applies those lessons every day in her work-optional life. She has a regular column on MarketWatch. She’s spoken at Google, Tesla and at conferences around the U.S. She has been featured in the New York Times, TIME, MONEY Magazine, Vice Media, Yahoo! Finance, Forbes, LifeHacker, Bloomberg, Buzzfeed, and media outlets around the world. If you want to learn how Tanja was able to retire early and make it work, this episode is for you. Highlights from Episode 18 [02:11] Tanja retired early at 38. [02:20] Tanja's definition of retired probably most closely matches the military definition of retired. [02:40] She feels that things like being able to podcast and write are a privilege, because they don't feel like work. [03:01] When approached with projects, she's more concerned with the fun aspect as opposed to how much it may pay. [05:01] Every six month period of Tanja's retirement has been different. [05:31] Tanja was 38, and her husband was 41 when they both retired. Looking back, they would probably have gone a little slower and not been so aggressive with their savings goals and said yes to more things. [06:18] If they could do it over again, they would have taken more vacation and rested more. [06:58] They both started out at entry level pay, but they were making six figures before retirement. At the end, they were saving quickly. [08:01] A micro retirement is more of a career intermission where you take a year or two off. You could also use it as a bridge to a new career. [09:40] Tanja saw her dad retire with a genetic disability when he was 42. She didn’t want to be powerless and forced into retirement. She wanted to travel, hike and have fun. [12:01] She developed her love of travel as a kid. [14:44] Tanja and her husband were die hard index fund investors. They have tax advantaged funds that they can't access until later and then regular investment accounts that they can access. [18:04] Solid investors have to think about downturns. Good investors need to be mentally tough or not look at things and get emotions involved. [20:04] The worst thing would be to retire and not have a cushion. [22:35] They have insurance on the exchange and pay $1000.00 a month. [24:58] If you want to look into retiring early, track three months of spending and see where your money is going. Then get very clear about what you want to spend. Set up automated saving and investing. [29:43] When you are watching your savings grow, it's a lot easier to avoid that impulse buy. [30:43] If you know you're going to retire, think about what you want to do in advance and where you get your identity and community. [33:28] She’s found ways to do public speaking without having to have a job. [33:51] Tanja has learned that podcasting takes more time than anyone thinks. She also found that writing her book was more enjoyable than she thought it would be. [35:35] She's a Top Gun fan! This is the 100th episode of The Personal Finance Show! My special guests today are Tanja Hester and Kara Perez, the hosts of my favourite podcast, The Fairer Cents, and James Mwombela, who is a CFP and Associate Planner at Grid 202 Partners. Episode 100 isn't about someone's personal finance story. It's about an important personal finance topic. Today's topic is financial privilege. My goal with this episode was to encourage you to think about privilege and how it affects your life and your finances. Most people understand obvious financial privilege. If you come from a wealthy family, you have an easier time than someone who doesn't come from money. Having to work as a teenager to pay bills is very different than choosing to work as a teenager to buy the things your parents won't buy you. Graduating with student loans puts you in a very different financial starting position from someone who's parents saved up and paid for their schooling. Working to save for retirement is very different from working to pay your bills and make the minimum payments on your credit cards. But as we discussed in the episode, there are also less obvious layers of privilege, like your gender, the colour of your skin, or whether you are an immigrant, which may affect your ability to make money. Like Darryl Brown from episode 93 of the show who didn't think that anyone would want him to be their financial advisor because he's black. Or Nico Barawid from episode 67 who's parents were both doctors, but were discriminated against financially because they had immigrated from the Phillipines. There is still a lot of work to be done to increase Indigenous people's access to culturally relevant financial education resources, as Bettina Schneider and I discussed in episode 95. Women are 80% more likely to live in poverty in retirement than men, as Saijal Patel mentioned in episode 77. This is not surprising if you consider that women only gained the right to open a bank account in the 1960s. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act was only enacted in 1974, which made it unlawful for a creditor to discriminate against any applicant on the basis of race, gender, religion, national origin, marital status, or age. Think about that for a second - 45 years ago, it was so normal to financially discriminate against anyone who wasn't a white male, that they actually had to make a law to tell financial institutions to stop being racist and sexist. On the other hand, white men have been able to open bank accounts and get credit since banks were invented hundreds of years ago. And it's not like everyone stopped being racist and sexist on the day the law came out. As we discussed in the episode, this discrimination still exists, though it's not as explicit as it once was. I've never met anyone who doesn't think this is a problem. There isn't anyone I know who would explicitly say that they don't believe everyone should have equal opportunity to make money and build wealth. So let's do something about it. Let's talk about it on podcasts like this. If you have the opportunity to use your privilege for good, to help someone who might have less advantages than you, do that. Remember that privilege is just perception. There's no logical reason why gender or race or all of the other differences we mentioned should impact your ability to make money. It's all in our heads and to stop it we need to change our thinking and our actions. So that's my 100th episode. I'll be back soon with new episodes so if you haven't subscribed to the podcast, please do that now, so you know when the new episodes are up. Beth MacMillan wants you to prioritize travel. In 2011, Beth and her husband, Mark, decided to use their saved up money and take a 6 month honeymoon around the world. You don't have to save $20,000 and buy round-the-world tickets like Beth did, but if you're interested in travel at all, you can pick up a lot of tips by listening to Beth's story. To be able to travel, you need 2 things, time and money. Maybe you have the time, but not the money, so you feel like you can't afford to go anywhere. Maybe you have the money, but not the time, so you can just fly somewhere for a weekend or a week and it doesn't seem worth the effort. There will always be barriers to travel, and if you have disposable income, there are a million things you can spend your money on instead of travelling. However, if you have the desire to travel, there are ways to make it a priority in your life. Every time you have extra money, you make a choice to use that money for something that is important to you. It doesn't have to be a lot of money, as Beth and I discuss in the episode. For Beth, travel was always top of the list. Maybe you're the same. Maybe you don't even realize it yet because you haven't been anywhere. Personally I believe every dollar spent on travelling is totally worth it. The “return on investment” of travel isn't dollars but it's a higher quality of life. But that's just me. And Beth, of course. P.S. If you want to ask Beth any questions about travel or concussions, you can email her here. Our guest today discovered her love of money, courtesy of her quarter-life crisis. Kara Perez is the founder of Bravely, which she started in 2017. At that time, she was in the midst of what she calls a quarter-life crisis. She was broke, saddled with student loan debt, she had no career direction. Today, her online site Bravely shares hopeful financial steps. Kara also speaks across the country about personal finance. Kara and I discuss some of the steps that women and men and society need to take in order to achieve things like gender wage equality, financial literacy for all and how she herself managed to work her way to financial freedom. The Scars of the Great Recession Many of those that graduated into the Great Recession of 2008 have been forever scarred, financially speaking. Many of us experienced the pain of that era, but in case you avoided it, take a moment to consider what it must have felt like. Think about the fear, anxiety and uneasiness that would come from facing a mountain of debt in one direction, and a jobless desert in the other. Who Is Kara Perez? The first time I saw Kara Perez in action, she was supporting another person in figuring out a financial question in a Facebook group. At the time I didn’t realize that she was the co-host of the Fairer Cents Podcast - a series based podcast that focuses on the sociological and economic aspects of money and how women on average are affected by these external systems. As I learned more about her, I realized that Kara Perez is also founder of the financial education company Bravely. Through Bravely, Kara has created a community that gives self-identified women the financial tools needed to bridge the gaps between their dreams and their realities. So, a single woman without children - how does this tie into our mission as a Financial Independence Podcast for Families? Wendy and I thought a lot about this, and these are the reasons we were so interested in exploring Kara’s views on the show. Kara Perez brings the Millennial perspective on money - one that neither Wendy nor I can give. Alright, yes, technically I am a Millennial. However, Kara is able to share a Millennial experience that I did not experience. Her fascinating money story includes graduating directly into the thick of the recession, being unable to find work for months, taking to side hustling, and eventually stepping out of a place of self pity and into a place of self affirmation. Her story is unmistakably inspiring. Kara has studied the dismal statistics that highlight the gap between gender and money. House of FI Family, it’s so important to know the potential obstacles in your path before you are faced with them. By knowing what others are facing in terms of gender inequality, you have the opportunity to avoid the same pitfalls. We hope these concepts help you to prepare yourselves, or your daughters, wives and loved ones for potential obstacles. Kara has created tools to master money - something Wendy and I hope to do someday. These tools can be helpful to some of you as you try to figure your financial situation out. By creating the tools Kara offers support to her followers as they navigate this money journey. “We’re all for cheering each other on, but we want to go deeper and look behind those happy epithets at what really makes money such a complicated subject, especially for women.” -Bravely Kara’s Money Story: A Millennial Perspective Kara (1 of 3 kids) revealed through her money story that she grew up a New England native. Kara spent all of her younger years in a single parent household, supported by food stamps. When she finished college she was unemployable, given it was the start of the Great Recession. Armed with an English degree, a desire to work and a ton of student loan debt, Kara tried her hardest to find a position. Nothing salaried panned out, and Kara's resolve was tested as she often panicked under the weight of the stress, and the negative cycle of her scarcity mindset. After reaching rock bottom, she realized she needed to create positive momentum in order to escape her negative money script. So she got to work. She paid off $25,302 in student loan debt while never making more than $32,000 per year and only using gig economy jobs! No full time salaried positions. She HUSTLED! What is BravelyGo.Co? Bringing in as much income as possible in order to reach your financial goals is key but that doesn't mean you can't get ahead if you don't make a lot of money. Kara Perez, the creator of Bravely Go, is living proof that is living proof that as long as you're willing to put the work in, achieving your financial goals with a low income is completely possible. After taking on more than $25,000 in student loan debt, Kara, extremely unhappy with her situation, started to research ways to quickly pay off her debt. After becoming inspired by personal finance blogs such as Frugalwoods, Kara paid off $25,302 in loans on a salary of less than $30,000, the final $18,000 in just ten months. After becoming debt free in June 2015, Kara created Bravely to help other women take control of their financial lives. In this episode we discuss: How a simple Google search inspired her to pay off $18,000 in student loan debt in 10 months How paying off her debt deepened her relationship with others How her personal finance blog, Bravely Go, came to fruition Why women have become her target audience Kara’s 10 financial commandments for women The significance of value-based spending and spending on the things that you love Kara’s next financial and life goals At the end of the podcast, I also talk about the waitlist to the soft launch of my monthly membership program. A Story NOT Being Told About Financial Literacy In the past year and a half, Kara Perez founded her own company [Bravely] and has been featured in magazines like Glamour, Forbes and Austin Woman. She’s established herself as a paid contributor to numerous websites in the ‘financial blogosphere’ and recently started her own podcast, The Fairer Cents, where she and her co-host Tanja, untack sticky financial conversations. And to truly comprehend how impressive all of that is, you first have to understand that just three short years ago, on the regular, Perez confesses to having spent an unhealthy amount of time openly sobbing in her car. In her own words: “I like to refer to summer 2014 as ‘crying-in-cars-2014,’ because I did, indeed, spend June through August of that year crying almost every time I got into my car. Once I was tucked into my little sedan, all my anxiety and stress bubbled to the surface. I was making $900 a month, carrying $18,000 in debt, and had no idea how to break the cycle. I felt trapped by my low income, and was scared witless that this would be the rest of my life.” You see, like many, Kara graduated college in the middle of the recession, with limited job prospects and mounds of student loan debt. “Back in 2011, no one was hiring and certainly no one wanted me, with my English degree,” she explained in our interview. “So I picked up a job catering and another gig as a part time receptionist, making $9 per hour … At this point I’m three years out of college and I’m freaked out … I’m doing everything I can to kind of exist. But I’m not thriving and I’m not growing.” So, what transpired next would likely baffle even the boldest of optimists. Somewhere deep inside, Perez found the courage to change her story. When the pain of a future of financial mediocrity became too much to bear, she cinched up her big girl pants, put her head down and went to work. Literally. By the time she came up for air, she’d eliminated a 10-year debt in just 10 months. And get this … In 2015 alone, Kara managed to sock away $23,000 on an income of 32 grand. Let that sink in for a moment. Kara’s story highlights the freedom that can only come by way of tapping into the twin super-powers of discipline and grit. Today, as the leader of the Bravely community, her’s is a fresh voice in a somewhat stale world of personal finance conversations. Her’s is a mission to help her generation and the next establish a healthier relationship to money. In this episode of Voices of Impact, Kara and I discuss the importance of having healthy conversations of money. We identify the lessons that are not being taught at home about financial literacy. And we talk about how her company, Bravely, provides a supportive environment for women to tackle their biggest financial challenges. More women are graduating from college, becoming the primary breadwinners in their home and reaching new levels of career success than ever before. In fact, according to BMO Financial Group (Women of Wealth. Ettinger, H. and O’Connor, E. Family Wealth Advisors Council, 2012. http://familywealthadvisorscouncil.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf/FWAC_ WomenOfWealth_12pp.pdf) “women are now the primary breadwinners in over 40% of U.S. households. This represents an almost four-fold increase from 196012. Women also own 30% of all private businesses in the United States, employing over 7.8 million Americans13, and control 51% ($14 trillion) of U.S. personal wealth. The wealth that women control is expected to grow to $22 trillion by 2020”. So why is all this important in my own financial freedom story? Kara Perez founded Bravely this January to start a community of self-identified women using the financial tools to bridge the gap between their dreams and their realities. Kara discovered her love of finances courtesy of her quarter-life crisis. Broke, underemployed and saddled with student loan debt, she realized that her lack of financial education was crippling her adulthood. http://www.bravelygo.co/

If you're game to get real about money while taking down the patriarchy, then this is the podcast for you. Subscribe now!
